... PYGMALION A ROMANCE IN FIVE ACTS [caption title]

New York: Everybody's Magazine, November 1914.. New York: Everybody's Magazine, November 1914.. Small quarto. Publisher's violet cloth. Illustrated. Pencil note on front endsheet, light rubbing at tips, otherwise near fine in a split, chipped (but 80% complete) example of the uncommon printed dust jacket. Cloth slipcase and chemise. First separate American issue (unauthorized) and first separate issue in English, comprised of sheets from the periodical publication, specially bound up and distributed by Putnam. When advised by Shaw's agent that they had acquired serial rights only, distribution in this format was halted. Some copies were also bound in limp leather. Formal book publication in English finally took place in 1916. An early pencil note on the endsheet promulgates an extraordinary fiction, asserting this is one of fifty copies given to Shaw by the publisher. LAURENCE A124d.

Kriegs Album: 22[-26] Sonderheft der "Woche". Five Volumes

Berlin: August Scherl, 1914. Berlin: August Scherl, 1914 Berlin: August Scherl [1914-1916]. 5 volumes. Profusely illustrated from photographs; text in German. 11½x8¾, cloth-backed boards. Extensively illustrated review of the German military during the early years of the Great War, selected from a German weekly. Well worn, contents toned at margins with some coming loose and chipping in places, just good, with one volume being better described as fair. Gripping collection of photographs - about three per page, cumulatively hundreds - taken by the German side during The Great War, with substantial preliminary text (in German) which is apparently of a war-diary nature, being organized chronologically by month and day. Profuse imagery is primarily from photographs of a diverse and captivating nature - including a plethora of portraits of aristocratic German officers - but does also include some sketches and some quite absorbing and very detailed maps as well. Vol. 22: 24 pp (text) + 183 pp (photographs); Vol 23: 39 pp (text) + 167 pp (photographs); Vol 24: 84 pp (text) + 151 pp (photographs) + ads; Vol 25: 55 pp (text)+ 150 pp (photographs) + ads; Vol 26: 109 pp (text) + 111 pp (photographs).         DUBLINERS

Richards , 1914. Richards , 1914. First edition. Original maroon cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper cover. A very good copy with a little fading to the spine and a few faint splash marks to the upper cover. Internally clean with some foxing to the prelims and page edges. The gilt titles are bright and the binding crisp, a well preserved example of a susceptible book. Joyce's unsurpassed collection of short stories, in which he attempts to 'present Dublin to the world'. The book had a tortuous birth: it was to be Joyce's first published work and appear in 1906, but the publication was abandoned during printing due to disagreements between Joyce and his publishers regarding emendations. In defence of his writing, Joyce said famously in a letter to Richards "It is not my fault that the odour of ashpits and old weeds and offal hangs around my stories. I seriously believe that you will retard the course of civilisation in Ireland by preventing the Irish people from having one good look at themselves in my nicely polished looking-glass." After the publication of Chamber Music in 1907 Joyce offered Dubliners to Elkin Mathews and upon rejection approached the Dublin publishers Maunsel. They printed an edition of 1000 copies in July 1910, but all but a few of the page proofs were burned by the printer because of "objectionable" passages in some of the stories. In 1913 Richards eventually agreed to publish the book in an edition of 1250 copies, 746 of which were bound up and the remaining 504 were sold to B.W.Huebsch to form the American edition. The book was published on 15th June, 1914.

THE TERRA NOVA AT THE ICE FOOT, CAPE EVANS

The Fine Art Society [], 1914. The Fine Art Society [], 1914. Original tinted carbon photograph on board depicting the Terra Nova tethered to the ice with a large ice structure to the foreground. 43.5x31cm. Mounted on green card. Signed by the photographer to the lower left. Very good condition with four thin horizontal blisters to the upper part of the image. Herbert G. Ponting was a self-taught photographer who was enlisted as Scott's official photographer on his British Antarctic Expedition to the South Pole (1910-1913). As the first professional photographer to be employed on an Antarctic expedition, Ponting considered this posting to be a challenging opportunity to use the art of photography to aid geographical and natural discovery. Accompanying the Terra Nova crew for almost fourteen months, Ponting took over 1,000 photographs that chronicled every aspect of the journey in astonishing detail, including intimate shots of the crew's day-to-day life. He built himself a darkroom at Cape Evans and worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to produce perfectly balanced and composed images. This image is enlarged from the negative made by Ponting at Cape Evans, taken on 16 January 1911. Rarely found signed.

A VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD MADE BY JOEL ROOT 1802 - 1806 [cover title].

[N.p. n.d., but ca. 1914]. - 73pp., typescript, printed on rectos only. Small folio. Original limp blue morocco, gilt. Inscribed on front flyleaf. Light wear to extremities, slightly heavier to corners and spine ends. Internally clean. Very good. A very interesting narrative of a voyage made by Joel Root (b. 1770), a native of Southington, Connecticut, as supercargo and director of a voyage on the ship Huron which left New Haven in April 1802 in search of hair seals for the American market and fur seals to be sold in China. Clearing Cape Horn in January 1803, they arrived at the Mocha, Lobos, and St. Mary's islands off the coast of South America, where they found a large population of seals. Root and a small party were blown off course in a whale boat and temporarily separated from the Huron. After being briefly imprisoned at Concepcion, they rejoined the Huron on February 25th. The captain headed for the Lobos Islands off the coast of Peru, while Root chose to stay behind on St. Mary's Island off the coast of Chile. With part of the crew he was able to take ten thousand seal skins. On the return of the Huron, they set sail on September 25th for the island of Massafuero, one of the Juan Ferdinand Islands, also off the coast of Chile. There Root proposed to take fur seals for the China market, while the Huron returned to the U.S. with its cargo of 19,000 skins. "Mr. Root was surprized to find on the island more men than seals. In all there were about 150 men." These were lone sealers left behind by various ships. Root himself took about 4,000 skins, and then purchased another 5,000 or more from the loners who had been threatened by the Viceroy of Peru with imprisonment if they failed to leave the island. In fire sale fashion, Root bought the skins for twenty-five to fifty cents each, and upon reaching Canton he sold them for ninety-five cents apiece and invested the proceeds in China goods which he then sold in Hamburg. From Hamburg he sailed for St. Petersburg, where he bought a cargo of mixed goods to sell on his return to the United States. Root reached New Haven again on October 30, 1806. ^Four other manuscript versions of Root's narrative have been located, all in some way different. There is also a published account of the voyages in the Papers of the New Haven Historical Society (Vol. 5, 1894), which differs markedly from this. That version is told in the first person, while this is in the third; it is generally more detailed but also omits two substantial sections included here which tell of an encounter with pirates at Sumatra and an incident with a disgruntled sealer who almost murdered Root. The present narrative was written by Dr. Emile B. Gardette, Root's grandson-in-law, based on accounts related to him by Root in 1836. According to the text, Gardette wrote this in 1841. As suggested by some of the wording, he may also have used an account which was written in 1840 by Root himself for his family. The original manuscript of that account is not located, but the New York Historical Society lists a "transcript of memoir originally written in 1840 and subsequently copied by [Root's] daughter in 1847." East Carolina University's Joyner Library also holds a copy of the 1840 memoir, photocopied from an unspecified source and previously owned by Jake D. Moore of Kingston, N.C. The University of Montana likewise holds a copy with more or less the same text as the present copy, though theirs is 56pp. rather than 73pp., and is described as a "photocopy of a typescript" with added photographs and genealogy. As for Gardette's manuscript - the original source for our typescript and the version at the University of Montana - the Connecticut Historical Society lists what it calls a "biography" written ca. 1841, a "handwritten narrative" that could be Gardette's account. For remarks on Root's successful enterprise see Busch, WAR AGAINST SEALS: A HISTORY OF THE NORTH AMERICAN SEAL FISHERY (McGill, 1985).
