MISALLIANCE. The Dark Lady Of The Sonnets And Fanny's First Play. With a Treatise on Parents and Children. Inscribed.

Constable and Company, London 1914 - Shaw, George Bernard. MISALLIANCE. The Dark Lady Of The Sonnets And Fanny's First Play. With a Treatise on Parents and Children. Inscribed. London: Constable and Company Ltd., 1914. "It is more dangerous to be a great prophet or poet than to promote twenty companies for swindling simple folk out of their savings". First Edition. Small 8vo. 234 pp. + 2 pp. of ads. A near fine or better copy in light moss green cloth, gilt titles to the spine, t.e.g., in a bright, near fine slightly spine darkened example of the rather uncommon dustwrapper. A significant presentation copy inscribed in black fountain pen on the half-title: "To Robert Loraine, who created Hotchkiss (among / other good turns), from Bernard Shaw. / 17th May 1914". Loraine [1876-1935] was a man of action: actor-manager, soldier, aviator, Fabian & of course, a close friend to Shaw - perhaps best known as an actor he's seen most commonly on holiday with the Shaw’s & Harley Granville-Barker or at Fabian events. Loraine & Shaw shared political affiliations & a passion for theatre: it was Loraine who premiered as the lead in Man & Superman on Broadway, the production was massively successful & launched Shaw as a force to be reckoned with in the United States. "The whole strength of England lies in the fact that the enormous majority of the English people are snobs". - Hotchkiss in GETTING MARRIED first performed in 1908 & published in THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA, 1911. Excellent example. Custom TBCL embossed cloth slipcase in fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Pedigrees of Anglesey and Carnarvonshire Families

Horncastle Lincolnshire: Author, 1914 With their collateral branches in Denbighshire, Merionethshire and other parts. In original brown paper boards lightly worn, titles in red and black ink. Spine has title in black ink to a newer white paper label, joints have been professionally strengthened. Internally, NO inscriptions, minimal foxing to endpapers, title page text in red and black ink, 2 small tears at margin to rear, [7], 410 pp. THE corner piece to any Welsh collection and very scarce in any form. Rarely found in such lovely condition. GRIFFITH, naturalist and antiquary; took an early interest in archeology and natural history which in time accounted for his volumes on the Flora of Anglesey and Caernarvonshire, published in 1894, and his Portfolio of Photographs of Cromlechs in the same two counties, published in 1900; however it was his truly monumental Pedigrees of Caernarvonshire and Anglesey Families, with their branches in other counties of North Wales, published in 1914, a work of outstanding merit, a godsend to researchers, that he will be best remembered. No such work could be perfect, and the great influx of family papers to library repositories has exposed many errors both of commission and omission. But the piling up of such errata by fortunate acquirers of the latest information can never impair the basic importance of this great work. See NLW WBO for a full Bio.

EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON: Old Tales From the North

New York: George H. Doran, nd [1914]. First U.S edition. Illustrated with 25 beautiful tipped-in colour plates, numerous black and white illustrations, and elaborate decorative endpapers by Kay Nielsen. 4to, publisher&#146;s original yellow cloth lettered in red on the spine and on the upper cover. IN THE VERY SCARCE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET, lettered and pictorially decorated in red. 205. A very nice copy indeed, the original cloth bright and the text-block and plates clean and quite fresh, owner&#146;s signature, paper with closed separation without loss at rear fly and pastedown. The dustjacket, scarce in any condition, is quite well preserved with only a bit of mellowing or aging and with a few chips or unobtrusive closed tears. EXTREMELY SCARCE IN THE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET.<br> Fifteen old Norwegian folk-tales from Asbjornsen and Moe&#146;s &#145;Norske Folkeeventyr&#146;, have been selected and magnificently portrayed by Nielson. Only his second book commission, this collection of paintings earned him enormous public recognition and equal standing with Dulac and Rackham as a leading children&#146;s book illustrator. Here, in its larger format, we are offered the luxury of viewing all 25 illustrations with utter clarity. &#147;In these elegant paintings, he combined qualities of Oriental design with those unique features of his native Scandinavia: The melancholic mystery of a bleak Nordic twilight seemed to cast a magical spell on the images themselves. If it were not for the outbreak of war that year, there is no doubt that Nielsen would have continued to produce many more of these remarkable paintings for children, to establish him as a great master of the Northern fairy tale.&#148; -Susan Meyer. <br> These captivating old tales at once exotic and somehow familiar, of princes and princesses, giants and mythic goats, all combine to give us a glimpse into the Norwegian imagination. And we cannot help but agree that: &#147;The quaintness, the tenderness, the grotesque yet realistic intermingling of actuality with supernaturalism, by with the original Norske folkeeventyr are characterized, will make an appeal to all, as represented in the pictures of Kay Nielsen. And these imperishable traditions, whose bases are among the very roots of all antiquity, are here reincarnated in line and colour, to the delight of all who ever knew or now shall know them.&#148; -Preface.

        Der Armer Spielmann

Vienna - Anton Schroll & Co, 1914 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A pocket sized volume, with yellow paper covered boards. This is a German language text, written in black letter script. Franz Seraphicus Grillparzer (January 15, 1791 January 21, 1872), an Austrian dramatic poet, was born in Vienna. Although Grillparzer was essentially a dramatist, his lyric poetry is in the intensity of its personal note hardly inferior to Lenau&#39;s; and the bitterness of his later years found vent in biting and stinging epigrams that spared few of his greater contemporaries . As a prose writer, he has left one powerful short story, Der arme Spielmann (1848), and a volume of critical studies on the Spanish drama, which shows how completely he had succeeded in identifying himself with the Spanish point of view. Condition: The binding of the text block is tight and firm, with both covers and all internal pages securely attached. The internal hinges are strained but holding well. The spine is detached but present. The boards are slightly rubbed and faded. Internally the pages are clean and bright. some of the illustrations have been coloured in. Thereis ink writing to the title page and to the reverse of the same page. Overall, this volume is in very good condition..

VOSSISCHE ZEITUNG 1914-1918 (BERLIN, GERMANY NEWSPAPER) (33 VOLUMES/33 MONTHS)

Berlin, Germany: Vossischer Erben. Fair. 1914-1918. Hardcover. 33 months of newspapers from the years 1914-1918 totalling approximately 990 daily newspapers. These scarce German-language newspaper compilations cover major military and political developments of World War I from a German perspective. These periodicals offer maps of the fronts, areas of combat and regions relating to the war. The newspapers by and large retain the customary sections, with reports on finance and commerce (largely war-related) , travel & leisure, reviews, and illustrated advertisements. The Vossische Zeitung (more precisely: "(Koniglich Privilegierte) Berlinische Zeitung von Staats- und Gelehrten Sachen") was the well-known liberal German newspaper that was published in Berlin (1721-1934). Its predecessor was founded in 1704. Among the editors of the "aunt Voss" were Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Willibald Alexis, Theodor Fontane and Kurt Tucholsky. Condition: These folio volumes, measuring approximately 12.25" x 18", are bound in cloth-backed marbled boards (with a few boards lacking). Ex-library (Yale) books show external wear, with soiling to covers and splitting along spine edges. Some boards detached with a few boards missing with initial or final pages exhibiting heavy wear or altogether lacking. Text blocks are intact. Antique library bookplate of Yale appears on front pastedowns. Age-toned pages are clean and without markings. Pages may occasionally show closed tear or small amount of tape repair. Some volumes may exhibit greater wear/loss at edges. By and large this is a very readable collection. Months include: December 1914; January-December 1915 (lacking May) ; January-December 1916 (lacking February & October) ; January, May, June, August, September, November & December 1917; February-May 1918. .

        My Autobiography

Frederick A. Stokes Publishing, NEW YORK 1914 - From the recently auctioned collection of M.B. Goldstone--with his personalized gold bookplate lightly attached to the front pastedown and his penciled signature and notes to the front free endpaper. This copy originally belonged to author, novelist, and short story writer Katherine Havilland Taylor--and attached (tipped in) is a rejection letter from S.S. McClure for a short story Taylor wrote called "How Fickle Women Are". Dated June 8, 1925, and on McClure's Magazine stationary, McClure writes to Taylor--"This is a very good story and I would like it but I am sorry to say I can't buy it, considering what I have on hand." "Faithfully Yours. S. S. McClure". Taylor was a successful short story writer who was published in several magazines, but apparently, never in McClure's. Taylor wrote one novel called "The Failure", which was adapted into a 1938 RKO film with a renamed title of "A Man To Remember"--starring Lionel Barrymore. Taylor had several stories published by all of the major writing magazines of the early part of the 20th Century. Also, enclosed and attached to this copy on page 241, conveniently across from the photo of "Viola Roseboro"--editor in chief of McClure's magazine, is a letter on McClure's Magazine stationary dated December 21, 1922 and also addressed to Taylor, is a rejection letter for a story entitled "Facing Reality" and signed and written by Viola Roseboro with her handwritten notes to Taylor on one side and a formal rejection on the other. In her notes Roseboro says, "Good, only we feel it is more for the women's magazines--not for us. Good Luck, and I expect as much. V. R." The other side of the letter states, "We always thank you for letting us see your work. We must send this back despite much wit and cleverness.I am going to take the liberty of telling you that I think this would be better told without the frills and trimmings the author addresses to the reader--better and more saleable". Roseboro goes on to state that the reason she never signs her letters is because she is seldom in the office--apparently Taylor questioned if they (the stories) were ever indeed read at all because she was rejected so many times. It is common knowledge that Roseboro really called the shots at McClure's---she was responsible for getting on board many young and talented writers--including Jack London, Upton Sinclair, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Willa Cather---who secretly penned this autobiography of McClure's life. McClure lived until 1949, and among many accomplishments, he was a business partner of Frank Nelson Doubleday, founded with him Doubleday & McClure, which became today's Doubleday publishing empire. This copy is in very good condition. First printing with September 1914, as called for. Frontispiece portrait of McClure with original tissue guard as new. Dustiness to the page ends, age toning to the spine with the lettering being quite hard to read. The front hinge is loose but easily repaired. Interior pages are unmarked and clean. Front board is quite nice with gilt lettering and decorations bright. Altogether a nice well read copy from the collection of a quite famous collector, who along with his brother Adrian Goldstone, Steinbeck's bibliographer, both well known and whose books are just now being auctioned off for record sums--(Gatsby for $180,000). What makes this copy rare are the letters and signatures of McClure and Roseboro--indeed Roseboro's signature is very rare for somebody whose influence was huge in the publishing world of the early 20th Century--she single handedly put Jack London's career on the inside track, and he went on to become the highest paid author of his time.

First edition / édition originale. 8vo., 259pp. Gilt-stamped & ruled half burgundy polished calf over brown, black & white marbled paper, like marbled endpapers. Ouvrage enrichi de nombreaux dessins de Busnel, de deux dessin [pages 78 et 125] et d'un portrait de L'auteur par St-Cgarles. A near fine or better example of this rare presentation binding. Signed & numbered [No. 6 of 26 signed copies in a total edition of 300; binding by Oliver Barwick] "No. 6 / Hommage de l'auteur / Arsène Bessette". Very Uncommon. [In 1914 Arsène Bessette had his only novel, Le débutant, published in Saint-Jean by La Compagnie de Publication Le Canada Français. It is not known if he had shown it to his friends, if the publisher of Le Canada Français had read the manuscript, or if Bessette himself sent the press release to La Presse, in which his work was describ ed as a novel of the soil and an interesting portrait of social customs with most of the action taking place in the countryside. What is known is that the book was dedicated to "fellow journalists, to the sincere and upright men in public life, [and] to all those who have lost their illusions, before or at the same time as their hair." The dedication was a premonition, for the author would quickly lose his own illusions when the critics ignored his novel. Since Bessette was on the members list of the Masonic lodge L&#146;Émancipation [see Adelstan de Martigny*] published in Le Devoir in 1910, not everyone would have been well disposed towards him, which doubtless explains why the publication of his novel &#150; "the only work of fiction in Quebec literature inspired by Masonic ideas," according to Roger Le Moine - met with a conspiracy of silence. The fact that the book did not come out in one of the major urban centers is not enough to account for the critics&#146; indifference; on the other hand, their lack of interest may have discouraged Bessette from publishing the two further volumes that were announced when Le débutant appeared. What is the novel about? Paul Mirot, the hero of the story, and his introduction to journalism, to the world of letters, and to love, was probably a projection of the author. Indeed, Paul has much in common with his creator, for, like Bessette, he is determined, courageous, witty, and intelligent. These qualities led the owner of Le Populiste to hire Paul as a journalist. Soon appreciated by both his employers and his readers, he also wins the heart of Simone Laperle, the beautiful and wealthy cousin of his best friend, Jacques Vaillant. Having become his mistress, the young woman introduces him to society. In partnership with Vaillant, Mirot founds a newspaper, in which he denounces the rigidity of society. He is also engaged in writing a novel that deals with the dangers of nationalistic ideology in literature. The newspaper is censured for its supposedly revolutionary ideas and ceases publication. Mirot&#146;s novel is banned and he loses his job at the newspaper where he is then working. In addition, the death of Simone closes his love life. The novel ends in complete failure, yet the hero remains confident about the future, while attaching no importance to the past. Contrary to what literary critics would assert for many years, Bessette himself did not lose his job at Le Canada français when Le débutant was published, nor was the novel condemned by the archbishop. The writer remained on the staff of Le Canada français until the end of 1917, when he moved to Montreal to work for Le Pays and La Presse. In 1920 he became an inspector for the Montreal Tramways Commission. Arsène Bessette died suddenly on 21 June 1921 while visiting a friend. Notices of his death appeared in several newspapers, but Le Canada français, where he had worked for more than 15 years, had only a short article on t [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
