Two Portrait photographs of Junius Spencer Morgan, Jr. , as toddler and child, dated December 1894 and August 1898

n.p., n.d.. (MORGAN, JUNIUS SPENCER, JR) Each 4 x 5-1/2 inches on studio card mounts, with name and date in ink. Fine . Charming photographs of the grandson of the legendary financier J. P. Morgan. The first portrait shows the young child (aged two) standing and holding a sailing ship (L. Alman, New York and Newport, R. I.). In the second (aged six), he is posed leaning against a stone bench before a rural backdrop (Bullingham, London). Eldest son of Jack Morgan, "Junius Spencer, Jr., graduated from Harvard in 1914. he served as a junior officer on a destroyer off the English coast in the war, an experience that left him with shattered nerves. Tall and extraordinarily handsome, with the face of a sensitive actor, he became a Morgan partner in 1919. Warmly approachable and possessed of a dry sense of humor, Junius was probably the nicest Morgan-but the most dismal businessman. ... Like his father and grandfather and brother, Junius became a commodore of the New York Yacht Club-the only certifiable Morgan activity that really fit him" (Chernow, The House of Morgan, p. 266)

Cartoons of the Great War. World War One Album of Colorful Cartoons and Caricatures, possibly by a P.O.W

1914(?)-1915/6. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. 22.5 by 18 cm. 270 pp., almost all with one or more colorfully painted cartoons and caricatures depicting the early part of World War One, beginning in 1914 and possibly all the way through 1915. The album was made with a notebook with ruled lined paper. On most pages, the lines have been covered over, and are at most barely visible. & & One of the specific events alluded to is the sinking of the Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy by one German submarine, an event which occurred in September, 1914. The sinking of the Lusitania and chemical warfare are alluded to well into the album, which brings the album into the middle of 1915. It is possible the album runs into 1916 but not by much. The jingoistic, and non-subtle analysis manifest in the cartoons, does not give way to a weariness, a questioning, or disillusionment which would certainly have asserted itself later on in the war. & & The cover has a raised title, not fully legible anymore; from what can be made out, it was probably "Cartoons of the Great War". The identity of the artist is unknown; we were told he was a P.O.W., but there is no concrete evidence corroborating this and the assertion may be unverifiable. Other than the hearsay, support for the hypothesis, for that is what it is to us, comes from the unconventional materials used to produce the album. The paints used are not what someone with such an abiding interest in artwork would have chosen if he had the freedom to do so, but in a P.O.W. camp the artist would settle for what was on hand. The media used to paint the cartoons are various, but most unusual is the heavy use of an oil paint, or a house paint, which was frequently employed as a background, probably in part to blot out evidence that the artwork was applied to a lined notepaper. If these cartoons were done in a P.O.W. camp, the artist had to have been captured at the very outset of the war.& & Many of the cartoons are not really tied in to day-to-day events, but rather personalize and personify the war into a few stock characters -- the Kaiser, his sidekick of a fictional youthful son named Willie (the Crown Prince was named Wilhelm, but by the time of the war he was not only in his thirties, but also quite unlike this fictional incarnation), a lion representing Britain, John Bull, Uncle Sam, etc. -- who play things out in a Manichaean burlesque. And in this framework the bad guys are repeatedly bested, humbled and humiliated in the satisfying manner of animated cartoon villains. These simplifications are to some extent the diet everyone is fed during wartime, but would it not seem especially consistent with someone who might have been fed limited, and often, misleading information, by an enemy captor, and as an exercise by the artist to bolster his own and his colleagues' spirits? & & Yet one can not rule out that the album was kept by a soldier in the trenches, where too, the choice of artist’s tools one would expect to have been limited.& & Throughout the album the artist mines national stereotypes for humor, just as one would expect during wartime, and also during an era with few taboos in such patronizing merriment. Targets include Turkey, or the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary, as well as Germany. The cartoon captions can be obscure, their humor, lost on us; at times, we suspect, the captions might have come across as heavy-handed or clumsy even back when. Yet it should also be pointed out that much of the time the cartoons make their point with non-literal allegory in very clever ways. & & The imagery, unlike some of the text, holds up wonderfully well, and it is that we can feast on. One does not really have to know anything about the war, nor have an interest in the war, to enjoy the fancifulness and verve of the pictures. & & There are cartoons that refer to a channel tunnel, chemical gas warfare, Sinn Fein, Lord Kitchener, von Hindenburg, and on and on. Some of the best work is of caricatures of the leading figures in the war other than the Kaiser; or of the artist’s lampoons of alleged German cartoons; or a number of funny pieces that do not have a direct connection to the war. That said, a considerable amount of the album’s impact is cumulative, and it is the totality of creative energy and vision that make this album so special.& & The spine is somewhat cocked. The text block juts out a quarter inch from the binding. The binding is scuffed and has moderate to heavy wear. One leaf loose. A few leaves with minor damage. Very Good. Hardcover.& &

Frederic Remington-illustrated poster for The Light of Western Stars

No publisher, No place 1914 - A 1901 Frederic Remington illustration of a cowboy with the title and author printed at the top. Poster board, matted and framed behind glass. Matted to approximately 15" x 19". We have not examined the poster out of the frame, but the visible part of the image is about fine, with a tiny tear on the top, and a thin strip of very light tanning along the bottom, and with no other evidence of further damage behind the mat. The first edition of the book was published in 1914, which seems consistent with the age of the poster, although it might have been prepared for a contemporary reprint. Nice, large Remington image.

S B Steele Full dress Winnipeg about 1914" Photographer: Campbell's, Winnipeg, Ca. 1914 Neg # 10548. Major General Sir Samuel Benfield Steele, CB, KCMG, MVO (January 5, 1851 – January 30, 1919) was a famous member of the North West Mounted Police. He joined the local militia as a teenager and fought against the Fenians at the Battle of Ridgeway. He was sent west first to fight the Red River Rebellion of Louis Riel, but arrived after the Métis had surrendered. Steele had long been fascinated by the west, devouring the works of James Fenimore Cooper in his youth. He was especially interested in the First Nations, and spent his time in the west learning from them and the Metis. However he was recalled from Manitoba and based in Fort Henry in Kingston for the next few years. He was chosen to be one of the first members of the NWMP, being only the third officer sworn in. In 1873 he returned to Fort Garry with the new force and was put in charge of drilling the new recruits. Over the next few years he crisscrossed the prairies, before being assigned to NWMP headquarters to train new recruits. In 1881 he was assigned to meet with Sitting Bull, who fresh from defeating General Custer had moved into Canada and was demanding land for his people. Steele and a few officers met them and reached a peaceful agreement. This action won Steele great acclaim in the newspapers of the United States and was the beginning of his role as a public figure. In the North-West Rebellion Steele was dispatched with a small force. Missing the Battle of Batoche Steele and his force were sent to move against the last rebel force lead by Chief Big Bear. Steele and his two dozen Mounties defeated Big Bear's force at Loon Lake in the last battle ever fought on Canadian territory. The contributions of the NWMP to putting down the rebellion went largely ignored and unrewarded, to Steele's great annoyance. Steele spent the next ten years assigned to Fort McLeod, and at age 41 married Maria Harwood, eventually the couple had three children. In 1898 he was sent north to the Yukon to succeed Charles Constantine with policing during the Klondike Gold Rush. Initially, he was in charge of the customs posts at the Chilkoot Pass and White Pass, where he created the rule that no one would be allowed to enter without a ton of goods. Steele and his force made the Klondike Gold Rush into one of the most orderly events of its kind in history and made the police force famous around the world, which ensured its survival at a critical time when the force's dissolution was being debated in parliament. In 1900 he was second in command in Lord Strathcona's Horse, a Canadian light cavalry unit sent to South Africa during the Boer war and did so with distinction. Steele, however, disliked greatly what he was ordered to do by the British, which included burning towns and moving the populace to concentration camps.Steele was knighted in 1918 and was made a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, and Member of the Royal Victorian Order.Canada's fifth tallest mountain, Mount Steele, is named after him. Referring to a letter he wrote to 'The Times' and the help he has received from Germans in England since its publication, and saying that he is willing to answer further questions raised by his book. The Chronicle is fragmentary since the first part, which was to include the period up to the conquest of Yucatan, either was never written or was lost; and the second part, which was to be a history of the conquest, breaks off with Columbus sending Villafuerte and Sandoval to the Pacific Ocean. Cervantes de Salazar's sources were the Letters of Cortes; the memoirs of Alonso de Ojeda and Andres de Tapia, captains in Cortes' army; the Memoranda of Motilinia; the work of Lopez de Gomara; and the information gathered from others who had taken part in the conquest who were sill living in Mexico City twenty-five years later from whom he received useful information. The Chronicle is valued for its understanding and evaluation of the events it describes. Condition: "With compliments of the Hispanic Society" slip tipped in and slip from the Congresso de los Diputados tipped in to copy write page with Nuttall's name as receiving copy number three which is such labeled of 500 copies. Foster's date of acquiry (10/4/44) on title. Original wrappers bound in and soiled, some wear to edges of title, inner hinge cracked else about very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Original Photograph: Col. S B Steele. Ca. 1900 Pretoria, South Africa. Boer War. Second in Command, Lord Strathcona Horse. Samuel Benfield Steele 1851 - 1919

      J. C. Munro, Pretoria - 1914. (Photograph) Very good. Original Photograph mounted on embossed studio card. Card: 6 9 / 16"x 4 1 / 4" Image: 5 5 / 16" X 3 11 / 16". Original Photograph: Col. S B Steele. Ca. 1900 Pretoria, South Africa. Boer War. Second in command, Lord Strathcona Horse. Photographer: J. C. Munro, Pretoria. With original salmon coloured glassine studio envelope. MISALLIANCE. The Dark Lady Of The Sonnets And Fanny's First Play. With a Treatise on Parents and Children. Inscribed.

Constable and Company, London 1914 - Shaw, George Bernard. MISALLIANCE. The Dark Lady Of The Sonnets And Fanny's First Play. With a Treatise on Parents and Children. Inscribed. London: Constable and Company Ltd., 1914. "It is more dangerous to be a great prophet or poet than to promote twenty companies for swindling simple folk out of their savings". First Edition. Small 8vo. 234 pp. + 2 pp. of ads. A near fine or better copy in light moss green cloth, gilt titles to the spine, t.e.g., in a bright, near fine slightly spine darkened example of the rather uncommon dustwrapper. A significant presentation copy inscribed in black fountain pen on the half-title: "To Robert Loraine, who created Hotchkiss (among / other good turns), from Bernard Shaw. / 17th May 1914". Loraine [1876-1935] was a man of action: actor-manager, soldier, aviator, Fabian & of course, a close friend to Shaw - perhaps best known as an actor he's seen most commonly on holiday with the Shaw’s & Harley Granville-Barker or at Fabian events. Loraine & Shaw shared political affiliations & a passion for theatre: it was Loraine who premiered as the lead in Man & Superman on Broadway, the production was massively successful & launched Shaw as a force to be reckoned with in the United States. "The whole strength of England lies in the fact that the enormous majority of the English people are snobs". - Hotchkiss in GETTING MARRIED first performed in 1908 & published in THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA, 1911.
