The Wonderground Map of London Town. "The Heart of Britain's Empire Here is Spread Out For Your View it Shows You Many Stations & Bus Routes Not a Few. You Have Not the Time to Admire It All? Why Not Take A Map Home to Pin on Your Wall!"

London.: The Westminster Press.. Copyright 1914. [ 1924.. Color pictorial / pictographic map 29 1/4 x 36 1/2 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Light wear to edges and along folds, now minimized by linen backing; bright, clean condition. Originally published in 1914 as an advertising poster for the London Underground, this design proved so popular that it was subsequently in several different editions. It has been suggested that this particular edition with an image of a lion and "On to Wembley" at the upper left of the map was issued at the time of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition at Wembley (Roderick Barron). An outstanding and innovative graphic - an explosion of color and humor - it sparked a revival in interest in decorative cartography around the world which continues today, a century later. .

        Men of the deep Waters

[Quotation, 2ll.] By William Hope Hodgson, Author of “The Boats of the ‘Glen Carrig’,” “The House on the Borderland,” “The Night Land,” “Carnacki the Ghost Finder,” etc. London, Eveleigh Nash, 1914. Integral leaf publisher’s advertisements at end; pp.303+[i (blank)]+[2]; dark red fine rough buckram ruled blind on front cover, lettered black on front cover and spine; lower-edges uncut. Edges foxed, and some light foxing passim; otherwise a nice copy. This title not in Locke’s ‘Spectra’; Currey, p.243 listing two bindings: “red cloth lettered in gold on spine and front cover” and “pink cloth lettered in black on spine”. The present copy does not correspond to either, and would seem to be intermediate between the two. Eleven stories and two poems collected from periodicals in which they had appeared between 1906 and 1913. Several are fantasy or horror, and one or two give interesting glimpses into the origins of Hodgson’s novels: On the Bridge; The Sea Horses; The Derelict; My House shall be called The House of Prayer; From the Tideless Sea (two parts); The Captain of the Onion Boat; The Voice in the Night; Through the Vortex of a Cyclone; The Mystery of the Derelict; and The Shamraken Homeward-Bounder. The poems are The Song of the Great Bull Whale, and Grey Seas are Dreaming of my Death. In this copy the following errata and typographical flaws have been noted (state or issue significance, if any, undetermined): p.14, l.22, ‘i’ of ‘ice’ too heavy; p.170, l.4, ‘a’ of ‘lamp’ slightly dropped, l.6, ‘h’ of ‘hour’ too heavy; p.176, l.7, ‘moustrous’ for ‘monstrous’; p.191, l.21, ‘explained’ for ‘exclaimed’; p.198, l.25, ‘a’ of ‘reached’ too heavy; p.210, l.19, ‘i’ of ‘side’ too heavy; p.226, penultimate line, risen space after ‘This’; p.234, l.15, ‘o’ too heavy in ‘brought’. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

Herbert Hoover: Stand For the Right in the Great Issues Before Us

      - ÒThe question as to who wins in these contests is to me of less importance than that we keep faith.ÓWhen World War I began, Hoover was a consultingengineer in the mining industry, yetsix years later his name was already being includedin lists of potential presidential nominees. This letter gives us an insight into why.In 1914 he was asked to organize and directan American Relief Committee to aid U.S. citizensstranded in Europe. This was followedby his appointment as head of the Commissionfor Relief in Belgium, where his fine workin this highly visible office brought him fame. When the U.S. entered the war in April of 1917, President Wilson appointed Hoover food administrator, withinstructions to increase food production, reduce consumption, eliminate waste, stabilize prices and improve distribution. After the war ended, he went to Europe and established the American Relief Administration to assist ineconomic restoration and the feeding of millions of undernourished children. Returning to the U.S. in September1919, with success after success to his credit, HooverÕs friends launched a campaign to secure for him the Republicannomination for president. Here are the principles he intended to bring to the job.Typed Letter Signed on American Relief Administration letterhead, 1 page 4to, June 22, 1920, to RobertMarden.ÓThis is just a personal note to express in part my gratitude for the generous support which you have given to me.It has indeed been a great honor to have you feel that I am fitted for the great office of President. The question as to whowins in these contests is to me of less importance than that we keep faith in the great issues before us. We shall have yearsof great trial in the solution of most difficult questions and, although we have not had our own way as to the tools for theirsolution, we have no less obligation to stand vigorously for the right handling of these issues.ÓWhile he did not get the nomination, Americans were enthusiastic about HooverÕs stands on principle. The newpresident, Warren G. Harding, made him Secretary of Commerce, a position he continued to hold under HardingÕssuccessor, Calvin Coolidge. As head of the Department of Commerce, Hoover strengthened and expandedits activities, especially relating to federal regulation of the new technologies of radio broadcasting and commercialaviation. When Coolidge withdrew from the 1928 presidential race, the Republicans nominated Hoover onthe first ballot. HooverÕs letters seldom contain his political philosophy, so this one is exceptional.         2 autograph letters signed to Mrs. Benjamin Osgood Peirce

1914-1926. <p>Bridgman, Percy Williams (1881-1961). (1) Autograph letter signed to Mrs. Benjamin Osgood Peirce. N.p., n.d. [ca. January 1914]. 1 page plus integral blank. 175 x 139 mm. (2) Autograph letter signed to Mrs. Peirce. Cambridge, Mass., October 3, 1926. 1 sheet, on letterhead of Harvard University&#39;s Jefferson Physical Laboratory. 268 x 204 mm. Together 2 items. Tiny marginal tears in 1926 letter, but both letters fine otherwise.</p><p>From American physicist and philosopher of science Percy W. Bridgman, professor of physics at Harvard and winner of the 1946 Nobel Prize for his discoveries made in the field of high pressure physics, to the widow of American mathematician Benjamin Osgood Peirce (1854-1914). Peirce, author of the influential textbook Elements of the Theory of Newtonian Potential Function (1886), was instrumental in developing the teaching of mathematical physics at Harvard. Bridgman, who obtained his PhD. in physics at Harvard in 1908 and was appointed an instructor in physics by the university in 1910, would have known Peirce both as a student and as a fellow faculty member.</p><p>Bridgman&#39;s first letter to Mrs. Peirce, written shortly after Peirce&#39;s death on January 14, 1914, expresses his condolences in almost poetic fashion:</p><p>"We hope that these flowers may not be too late with their message of our sympathy and love. They are late because we too have been passing through a deep experience, although ours had a happy ending. Our little daughter [Jane Bridgman] was born Thursday morning. It seemed to me through the long hours of waiting that birth must be very close to death itself. I am sure that now I realize a little more than I could before all that this means to you . . ."</p><p>In his second letter, written twelve years later, Bridgman thanks Mrs. Peirce for sending him Peirce&#39;s Mathematical and Physical Papers 1903-1913 (1926), which had recently been published:</p><p>"This is to thank you and to let you know how highly I shall prize the collection of Professor Peirce&#39;s papers which you have just sent me. You would be surprised if you knew how many times I think of Professor Peirce as I go about the Laboratory, or as I prepare my lectures in the courses which were once his; the influence which he had I shall never forget. . . . "</p><p>In 1926 Bridgman had just been appointed to Harvard&#39;s Hollis Professorship of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, which Peirce had held from 1888 until his death in 1914.         Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam

1914. first edition. The Inspiration for The Grateful Dead 1971 Album Cover"Oh, come with old Khayyám, and leave the Wise&#133;"SULLIVAN, Edmund J., illustrator. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam. Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald. With drawings by Edmund J. Sullivan. New York: Dutton & Co., [1914]. First American Edition illustrated by Sullivan. Quarto (9 7/8 x 7 7/16 inches; 252 x 189 mm.). xvi, [300] pp. Color frontispiece with original tissue-guard and seventy-five full-page black and white illustrations. Publishers red cloth over boards, front cover and spine pictorially stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, lower edge uncut. Inner hinge expertly and almost invisibly strengthened, minor darkening to end-papers from dust-jacket flaps, but still a very fine copy, the gilt as bright and fresh as one could ever wish for. Complete with the original purple dust jacket pictorially decorated in gilt. Jacket spine faded, split along front spine fold and with minor chipping on top-edge.This is a very rare book and is the only copy we have ever seen in the original dust jacket. This first American edition was printed from the same sheets as the British edition of the previous year. The printers imprint on the last leaf reads "Howard & Jones, Ltd., Art Printers, 26-28 Bury Street, London, E.C."Edmund Joseph Sullivan (1869-1933), usually known as E. J. Sullivan, was a British book illustrator who worked in a style which merged the British tradition of illustration from the 1860s with aspects of Art Nouveau. Sullivan&#39;s style is comparable to that of Aubrey Beardsley, but is more romantic than Beardley&#39;s acerbic manner. Sullivan adapted his style to use the faux-Rococotechniques he had developed in his play-illustrations in order to combine them with bizarre images of strange fantastical figures, drawing on the genre of the grotesque. His Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, first published in London in 1913, then in New York in 1914 has a more modern day claim to fame. Here, among many fanciful and beautiful black-and-white drawings, he used images of skeletons and animated pots. One such &#39;skeleton&#39; image (plate opposite Chapter XXVl) was appropriated by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley for a Grateful Dead poster in 1966, and album cover in 1971.

        Die unregelmässige Herztätigkeit.

Herzrhythmustörungen, pp.62-65 - Karel Frederik Wenckebach (1864-1940)"Wenckebach was the first to demonstrate (pp.173-175) the value of quinine in the treatment of paroxysmal fibrillation. The same work contains a number of excellent descriptions of various forms of cardiac arrhythmia." - "As a result of his studies on the arrhythmias with the polygraph, Wenckebach had great influence on electrocardiography. He also was one of the first to suggest that the various disorders of the heartbeat which were produced in experimental animals were of the same nature as those observed clinically in man." - G.E.Bruch & N.P. de Pasquale, A History of Electrocardiography, pp.83f. - - - Garrison & Morton No.2844; Waller 10207

Archive of 42 Letters on Sales of Early Vintage Cars

Background: The Jackson Automotive Company was known for its extraordinarily well built cars; particularly, their luxury models built in 1914 with the Jackson Imperial at $1885.00 being their largest and most expensive and while sales were made all across the Eastern United States, the New York sales division was where the greatest number of sales took place. Earlier their focus was on racing cards and in 1908 the Jackson entry led at the Indianapolis 500 which was stopped at 235 miles due to poor track conditions and a deadly wreck; therefore, the organizers refused to declare a winner. After entering three race cars in the 1911 Indianapolis 500 they moved to emphasizing beautiful cars instead of the racing variety and at one time had 500 works producing 2,000 cars a year before the assembly line concept was introduced. E.A. Dorflinger with whom they worked closely and whose letters are in this collection was known for his craftsmanship and entrepreneurial life. Among the enclosed papers is the original selling agreement giving him exclusive rights in his community to sell five Jackson Automobiles. Here we learn about early dealer percentages (22.5%) and factory breaks on shipping. The 42 items of correspondence often show the problems of ordering parts in the pre-assembly line era. Precision was needed and supplying the needed part meant individual manufacturing once the initial small stock was exhausted. In the years they produced three models: The Olympic, the Majestic, and the Imperial. In a later letter the Sultanic models as touring cars were offered and were being advertised in magazines up until the beginning of World War I. It is obvious that Mr. Dorflinger was not selling cars but ordering the few remaining parts for repairs. In their series of letters beginning on May 1, 1915 they repeat they are expecting orders The next series of letters reflect that the company was dealing with someone who made promises but had no plan to fulfill them. This is a remarkable collection on the early days of vintage automobiles and the problems with both distribution and finding car companies for their small number of models. A very nice collection housed in a binder and each letter in protective plastic..

        LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES

Paris: L. Carteret, 1914. No. 154 OF 200 COPIES n. Hardcover. 286 x 216 mm (11 1/4 x 8 1/2"). With half titles in each volume. Two volumes. No. 154 OF 200 COPIES. VERY FINE DARK GREEN STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, BY BERTHE VAN REGEMORTER, covers with gilt frame of urns and floral garlands, raised bands, spines attractively gilt in stippled compartments with a central cluster of flowers, turn-ins with simple gilt frame, fuchsia-colored silk endleaves, patterned flyleaves, all edges gilt. Original paper wrappers bound in. With 34 color etchings comprising two title vignettes, six large head- and six large tailpieces, and 20 full-page plates by G. Jeanniot, all with tissue guards, plus an additional suite of all illustrations in black and white, and WITH AN ORIGINAL COLORED PENCIL STUDY FOR ONE OF THE PLATES, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, laid in. A Large Paper Copy. Verso of front free endleaf with ex libris of H. J. Hintze; patterned flyleaf with bookplate of Albert Natural. AN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE COPY with only the most trivial of imperfections, the ornate binding sparkling and entirely unworn. This is a virtually pristine example of the elegant work produced by Belgian binder Berthe van Regemorter (1879-1964), who had apprenticed at Sangorski & Sutcliffe--one of the few women to do so--before opening her own workshop in Antwerp. She first worked privately under Brussels binder Joseph Hendrickx and with finisher Louis Jacobs before travelling to London to continue her studies. We can see here the influence of Sangorski & Sutcliffe, and perhaps even more evident is the impact of Cobden-Sanderson and his pupils. The stippled spine compartments, with their clever use of negative space to create a large six-petalled flower around the central floral cluster, looks particularly English (not to mention beautiful). Van Regemorter went on to teach her craft at the Vrije Akademie in Antwerp and at Henry van de Velde&#39;s Institut Supérieur des Arts Décoratif at La Cambre. She became a scholar of the structural analysis of bookbindings, a field described as "bookbinding-archaeology." Her importance to the history of bookbinding in Belgium was affirmed in 2014, when the famed Bibliotheca Wittockiana held an exhibition of her bindings, drawings, and designs in conjunction with the publication of her biography by Elly Cockx-Indestege. The present graceful binding is well suited to this luxury edition of Laclos&#39; classic epistolary novel from 1782 that explored the decadence and cruelty of the bored, predatory Vicomte de Valmont and Marquise de Merteuil and the innocents they seduced. The coquettish illustrations here capture the world of the ancien regime without indulging in any depictions of lurid destruction.
