BILL JONES OF PARADISE VALLEY OKLAHOMA. HIS LIFE AND ADVENTURES FOR OVER FORTY YEARS IN THE GREAT SOUTHWEST. HE WAS A PIONEER IN THE DAYS OF THE BUFFALO, THE WILD INDIAN, THE OKLAHOMA BOOMER, THE COWBOY AND THE OUTLAW

[Chicago: M.A. Donohue & Co., 1914]., 1914. First edition. 8vo. Original maroon cloth, gold stamping on front cover and spine, frontis., 328 pp., preface, illustrated. "In the old days, when that part of the West, stretching from the Missouri river to the Rockies, and from the Rio Grande to the British possessions, was an almost unbroken wilderness, inhabited by roaming Indians and wild animals, there came a class of men, lured by the love of adventure, who were not afraid to brave the hardships of pioneer life." This book is the story of one of those pioneers. Six Guns 365 says, "This privately printed book was written in a humorous vein, and contains some material on the Dodge City gunmen and Billy the Kid. .... I corresponded with this old-timer before his death and bought all the remaining copies of his book. It was a very scarce item until I began releasing the remainder, and it is still scarce." Herd 398 says "Scarce." The former owner, Grant H. Clayton, has made a number of penciled comments on the front endpapers, as well as underlining sections throughout the book. Additionally, laid-in is a letter to an Oklahoma City bookseller dated December 19, 1978, from Clayton requesting titles he is interested to buy. The bookseller responds in red ink to each of his questions. Former owner's business card affixed to front paste-down sheet, notations on front endpapers and throughout the text, and front cloth lightly mottled, else very good, tight copy of a difficult title.         Richter's History and Records of Base Ball: The American Nation's Chief Sport

Philadelphia: Francis C. Richter. 1914. First. First edition. 306pp., illustrated from photographs. The front fly lacking, with some erosion to the cloth at the spine ends, and a little foxing. A well-worn but sound, good copy of this classic baseball book with a nice association, Inscribed by Richter to his son: "To my dear son Francis C. Jr. with the best wishes of his father. Francis C. Richter. Philadelphia Pa. March 14, 1914." As a writer, Richter was an influential force in the early development of the game. Beginning with the Philadelphia Day in 1872, then the Sunday World and Public Ledger, he was the first to set up a separate sports department for any newspaper. Richter was instrumental in the formation of the original American Association in 1882 and helped to place the Philadelphia Athletics in it. The next year he helped to organize the Phillies in the National League and started Sporting Life, a weekly newspaper, which became a great force in baseball. In 1907 he was offered the presidency of the National League but turned it down. He edited the Reach Guide from its inception in 1901 to the 1926 volume, which he completed days before his death. A splendid association copy. #314522. .

Into the Dead Heart. An Ornithological Trip Through Central Australia

Adelaide: W. K. Thomas & Co, 1914. Square duodecimo, 154 pp., 27 photographic plates, original brown printed wrappers bound in, presentation inscription to title-page verso; in attractive light tan half calf by Sangorski. Alice Springs and the Arunta. The first, and perhaps the most significant, of White's self-published accounts of his explorations in South Australia. White was an intrepid traveller of central Australia, including a 1913 journey to Alice Springs by camel, and to the Musgrave and Everard the following year. White later accompanied expeditions to Cooper Creek, the Nullarbor, and the Finke River, and became an advocate for the central desert Aborigines. {i Into the Dead Heart} contains significant ethnological description of the desert tribes, including anecdotal descriptions of the author's interactions with individual Aboriginal people. Also included are photographs of Arunta men in ceremonial garb and paint. Other photographs show various inland scenes including the Lindsay River, the surgery and telegraph station at Alice Springs, a particularly interesting shot of native dwellings on the Hugh River, Krichauff gorge and similar geographical features of interest. An inscription on the verso of the title page reads: 'To J.W. Hosking Esq. with the kindest regards. From the writer & his wife. Weetunga. 3/11/14.'.

Great Catherine: a Thumbnail Sketch of Court Life in St. Petersburgh in the Eighteenth Century [3 copies].

London: Constable & Co., 1914 - Blue-flecked paper wrappers. Housed in a green half morocco slipcase and indiviual chemises. One copy ink-stamped "Second Proof" and "R&R Clark LTD Edinburgh 27 Feb. 1914". Excellent copies. Three copies, in various states, of rehearsal or rough proof editions of Great Catherine, each inscribed by Shaw ("G. Bernard Shaw 26/7/30") with a short explanation. Two copies are in an early state, with the Byron quote on the title uncorrected, and lacking a copyright line on the verso of the title. In his inscriptions, Shaw refers to these copies as " an early rehearsal copy. The misquotation from Byron's Don Juan is uncorrected "; and "This seems to be really a spare proof and not a rehearsal copy. I do not know how it got loose " Shaw has corrected the quote in ink on one copy. The third copy is printed on thicker paper, corrects the title page quote, and includes the copyright slug. Shaw describes it in his inscription, as " a rehearsal copy, nominally a 'rough proof' " Laurence AA8. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Hubbard started the Roycroft Press in order to publish a series of biographical sketches he had written called "Little Journeys." These form the first volume of this collected edition. Hubbard quickly became both popular and famous and collected a community of craftspeople around him in Aurora. Roycroft craftspeople were skilled metal smiths, leather smiths, and bookbinders. Today, items that were produced by the Roycrofters are highly sought after by collectors.

Around the World in 30 Days; Or, the Greatest Trip Ever Made

New York: Street & Smith, 1914 - A thrilling science fiction adventure by an author later to distinguish himself for his much-beloved stories about collies, beginning with LAD: A DOG (1919). Advanced transportation technology allows Terhune's heroes to complete Phileas Fogg's record-setting journey in less than half the time. Written to capitalize on the enormous popularity of the work of Jules Verne, who had died nine years earlier, the novel was serialized in five installments in Street & Smith's TOP NOTCH MAGAZINE between February and April, 1914, and issued as a pulp novel in the publisher's Adventure Library shortly afterwards. Terhune's popularity after the publication of LAD led Street & Smith to reissue the novel in 1925, and when copies of this title surface it is generally the reprint: the first edition is very seldom encountered. Read to pieces by generations of youthful admirers, few copies of this fragile publication have survived. A very good copy in illustrated wrappers. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell case.
