Paris: L. Carteret, 1914. No. 154 OF 200 COPIES n. Hardcover. 286 x 216 mm (11 1/4 x 8 1/2"). With half titles in each volume. Two volumes. No. 154 OF 200 COPIES. VERY FINE DARK GREEN STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, BY BERTHE VAN REGEMORTER, covers with gilt frame of urns and floral garlands, raised bands, spines attractively gilt in stippled compartments with a central cluster of flowers, turn-ins with simple gilt frame, fuchsia-colored silk endleaves, patterned flyleaves, all edges gilt. Original paper wrappers bound in. With 34 color etchings comprising two title vignettes, six large head- and six large tailpieces, and 20 full-page plates by G. Jeanniot, all with tissue guards, plus an additional suite of all illustrations in black and white, and WITH AN ORIGINAL COLORED PENCIL STUDY FOR ONE OF THE PLATES, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, laid in. A Large Paper Copy. Verso of front free endleaf with ex libris of H. J. Hintze; patterned flyleaf with bookplate of Albert Natural. AN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE COPY with only the most trivial of imperfections, the ornate binding sparkling and entirely unworn. This is a virtually pristine example of the elegant work produced by Belgian binder Berthe van Regemorter (1879-1964), who had apprenticed at Sangorski & Sutcliffe--one of the few women to do so--before opening her own workshop in Antwerp. She first worked privately under Brussels binder Joseph Hendrickx and with finisher Louis Jacobs before travelling to London to continue her studies. We can see here the influence of Sangorski & Sutcliffe, and perhaps even more evident is the impact of Cobden-Sanderson and his pupils. The stippled spine compartments, with their clever use of negative space to create a large six-petalled flower around the central floral cluster, looks particularly English (not to mention beautiful). Van Regemorter went on to teach her craft at the Vrije Akademie in Antwerp and at Henry van de Velde's Institut Supérieur des Arts Décoratif at La Cambre. She became a scholar of the structural analysis of bookbindings, a field described as "bookbinding-archaeology." Her importance to the history of bookbinding in Belgium was affirmed in 2014, when the famed Bibliotheca Wittockiana held an exhibition of her bindings, drawings, and designs in conjunction with the publication of her biography by Elly Cockx-Indestege. The present graceful binding is well suited to this luxury edition of Laclos' classic epistolary novel from 1782 that explored the decadence and cruelty of the bored, predatory Vicomte de Valmont and Marquise de Merteuil and the innocents they seduced. The coquettish illustrations here capture the world of the ancien regime without indulging in any depictions of lurid destruction.

        A Midsummer's Night's Dream

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1914. Full-Leather. Very Good. Robinson, Heath. 4to - over 9?. Book. Henry Holt, NY, 1914. Full Morocco cover. First edition. Illustrated by W. Heath Robinson with 12 tipped in color plates + many more line drawings. 4to 185 pgs. Full red morocco binding, with gilt border decoration and lettering on spine and border of boards, is gorgeous and in fresh, bright condition. Binding tight. Some light occasional foxing, never disconcerting, is why I do not grade this copy in fine condition. Although Heath Robinson is not as sought after generally as Arthur Rackham, I consider this "gift book" the more satisfying, with Robinson's classical lines and styling well-suited for the material and tastefully applied throughout the text.

No place: No publisher. nd - c. 1914. A 1901 Frederic Remington illustration of a cowboy with the title and author printed at the top. Poster board, matted and framed behind glass. Matted to approximately 15" x 19". We have not examined the poster out of the frame, but the visible part of the image is about fine, with a tiny tear on the top, and a thin strip of very light tanning along the bottom, and with no other evidence of further damage behind the mat. The first edition of the book was published in 1914, which seems consistent with the age of the poster, although it might have been prepared for a contemporary reprint. Nice, large Remington image. .

        La VŽnerie Franaise Contemporaine

Adolph de Goupy, Paris 1914 - Half folio. original green cloth lettered in gilt, front cover with padded design of deer head with antlers in brown and cream, gilt medallion of fox at top, lettered in gilt on spine. Profusely illustrated with in text drawings and music scores, frontispiece and numerous full page plates in colour. One of 600 copies, "No. ASH for Mr. H. Sinney" below which is a charming original small watercolour signed by Reille. La VŽnerie Franaise Contemporaine is a famous and important book of the twentieth century about hunting in France. It gives a comprehensive overview of the French Hunts, which were then at their peak. The text is filled with anecdotes and, often amusing, comments. The individuals portrayed are identified by handwritten notes that the author had left in his own copy (not present here).Baron Karl Reille (1886 - 1975) was the great grandson of Honore Reille, Marshal of France, who had married the daughter of [Andre] Massena [the great Marshall under Napoleon, and perhaps the only possible rival to him]. Karl Reille had a happy childhood, divided between Paris and the Chateau de Baudry in Touraine, in the period preceding World War I. Reillee had shown at an early age a talent for art and design and his uncle Peter Verteville was his guide in developing these talents. They worked in an artistic affinity and often treated the same subject identically. In 1906 they produced jointly a series of portraits and caricatures of actors The VŽnŽrie Montpoupon.A passion for hunting with hounds ultimately determined where the talent of Karl Reille should be directed and bore fruit in the publishing in 1914 of VŽnŽrie Francaise Contemporaine. This important work presents all the hunts existing in France at the time, with each hunt illustrated by the author, and also its hunting song musically notated. Throughout his prolific career, Reille illustrated many books written by other authors about hunting. He also looked closely at the world of horses and horse racing which were his constant inspiration.Mobilized in 1914, he was taken prisoner early in the war. He spent four years in captivity at Plassenburg Ingolstadt in Bavaria. After the war, in 1922, Karl Reille created in association with the Baron de Lauriston, Rally Gaiment, a hunt for deer. In April 1924, Karl Reille married Odette Goury of Roslan, and they had six children. In 1939 he enlisted again at the outbreak of war, and was again taken prisoner by the Germans.         During World War I, Hoover Seeks the Cooperation of Fraternal Organizations For His Efforts at Food Conservation and Distribution

      - During World War I, Hoover Seeks the Cooperation of Fraternal Organizations For His Efforts at Food Conservation and Distribution.Hoover was living and working in London, England, when World War I broke out in Europe in 1914. He immediately became involved with assisting American travelers who were fleeing the war zone, setting up a committee that aided 120,000 Americans. With the German invasion of the neutral nation of Belgium, Hoover was asked to create a private humanitarian relief agency to assist Belgium's civilian population, which was threatened with famine. Hoover took the job and launched the Commission for Relief in Belgium. For the next three years he and his commission performed miracles, organizing millions of tons of food to send to Belgium and northern France. In 1917, the United States entered the war, and Hoover, by now a famous humanitarian, was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson to become head of the United States Food Administration, newly created to coordinate food conservation and distribution. This was a gargantuan task, as the U.S. needed more food than ever to feed people at home, soldiers abroad and the people in war-torn Europe. With "Food will win the war" as his motto, Hoover soon had millions eating cornbread and oatmeal instead of bread, and fish dishes instead of meat. Part of HooverÕs method was to enlist organizations for his efforts and have them cajole their memberships. Fraternal organizations with charitable purposes, like the Masons, Elks, and Odd Fellows, found themselves in HooverÕs sights. Here is his letter to the head of the Odd Fellows, seeking help quite pointedly, and very much illustrating his entire approach.Typed Letter Signed on his United States Food Administration letterhead, Washington, March 22, 1918, to J.F. Needham, Grand Secretary of the Order of Odd Fellows of America. ÒI desire to take this opportunity to commend the response made by members of your Order to the appeal of the United States Food Administration. The support of such a membership as yours is deeply appreciated. The necessity of close cooperation between the Food Administration and the American public becomes constantly more imperative. The whole great picture of winning the War rests largely on the loyalty and sacrifice of the American people as individuals. It is not a government responsibility alone. It is therefore important that every means of communication should be kept open to enable us, quickly and authoritatively, to keep the facts concerning food before the American people and to accomplish that flexibility of action which the changing circumstances abroad require. The lodges of the fraternal organizations scattered throughout the entire country are among the most important and available mediums of communication. The Food Administration has been organized by states, and the Federal Food Administrator in each state is now perfecting his state organization. A bulletin containing suggestions for enlisting the active support of fraternal organizations in food production and conservation is herewith enclosed, and it is our hope that by putting these suggestions into operation among the lodges of your Order, it will be possible for us to establish a closer working relationship with your entire membership. May we express the hope that you will send copies of this bulletin, which we will be glad to furnish, to all your lodges, accompanied by a personal letter of transmittal urging the assistance so greatly needed. The United States Government, through its Food Administration, deeply appreciates what you have done in the past, the excellent spirit of patriotism which you are showing as an organization, and requests this further effort on your part in order to make possible the accomplishment of greater results in the future.Ó Included are two subsequent letters from HooverÕs aide to Needham, the first taking him to task for not responding to HooverÕs call, and the second thanking him for cooperating.W [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Home Rule for Ireland

England, ca. 1914 - A British political comment on the issue of Home Rule for Ireland. Amid celestial clouds a Union Jack-garbed figure of H.H. Asquith turns a grindstone on which a gleeful John Redmond in satanic wings sharpens a sword lettered "HOME RULE" as an angelic David Lloyd George flies away carrying by the coattails a small Irishman, shillelagh in hand. Prime Minister Asquith introduced the Third Home Rule for Ireland Bill to the Commons in 1912, in part to oblige the Irish, on which his Liberal ministry depended. Redmond, leader of the Irish Nationalists, established a balance of power favorable to the Irish and passage of the bill seemed assured. Lloyd George, (then Chancellor of the Exchequer), aware of the heavily pro-English sentiment of Northern Ireland, and of the political dangers of forcing unwilling Protestants under Catholic rule, induced the parties to exempt Ulster from the provisions of the bill, which finally passed in this form. This painting reflects the situation in early 1914: Redmond, with the aid of Asquith, prepares to sever Ireland from the mother country, while Lloyd George symbolically carries the pugnacious Catholic faithful away from the Protestant sanctuary of the North. It is, possibly, the original of a Conservative Party political poster. A UNIQUE PIECE OF POLITICAL PROPAGANDA IN THE HIGHLY UNUSUAL MEDIUM OF OILS (IRELAND) Original oil painting on canvas, unsigned, with caricatures of Asquith, John Redmond and Lloyd George, 19 1/2 x 30 inches, framed in gilt to 22 1/2 x 32 1/2 inches overall.
