Across the Plains in '54 A Story for Young People of Early Emmigration to California [With:] The Captive Maidens or the Prizes Won A Sequel to Across the Plains in 54 [sic] And by the Author of "Across the Plains in 54 " A Story of the early settlement

[San Francisco]: Chase & Rae, Printers, [c. 1914]. Two parts in one. 8vo, original printed tan wrappers, in new folding box with Plexiglas lid. [iv], 232 pp. Wrappers smudged, particularly at upper front wrapper; pervasive interior light dampstaining, with some spotting at terminal leaves; but a sound, solid copy of a most uncommon work. "Second Edition, Revised, Corrected and Enlarged by the Author" (as stated on the verso of the first title-page), and the first edition to include The Captive Maidens. The narrative tells of the author's emigration from Missouri to California in 1854, his return home in 1860, and his second overland crossing in 1865, as well as his adventures in California afterward. There seems to be little doubt of the general authenticity of Nott's travels, but he unfortunately recasts them into a fictionalized tale for young readers. Still, his plainspoken sincerity remains effective. Most of the California activity, mining, ranching, Indian-fighting, etc., takes place around Marysville. According to OCLC, the only copy of the first edition, undated and comprising just 76 pages, is at the Bancroft Library; about 15 copies of the second edition are listed. Wright Howes assumes that the first edition was not issued in book form, and he speculates that this second edition was published in 1905 and was almost completely destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and fire of '06. But the book's appearance makes it clear that it was produced considerably later; and the printers, Chase & Rae, seem to have been active only between about 1914 and 1925. Howes & Mintz call for a portrait, but no other authorities or booksellers record it. Almost all citations of this book, in fact, are vague and confused, reflecting its remarkable scarcity. Cowan (II), p. 457. Graff 3045. Howes N-213. Mintz 142. Towneley, p. 113.

        T. TURNBULL'S TRAVELS FROM THE UNITED STATES ACROSS THE PLAINS TO CALIFORNIA

Privately printed, 1914. - [Separate No. 158]. [From the Proceedings of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin for 1913, pages 151-225]. Edited with introduction and notes by Frederic L. Paxson, and with typographic arrangement by Reuben G. Thwaites. This copy is signed by Paxson, the Pulitzer Prize winning American historian. 22 3/4 cm. in brown printed wrappers. 75 pp., 7 route maps. Thomas Turnbull’s journey west of the Missouri was by the Mormon Trail rather than by the Oregon Trail, which was usually followed in 1852 by gold-seekers, and his journal is one of the few records of travel by that route. Dan Elbert Clark says in The American Historical Review, Volume XX, 1915, "Turnbull’s journey was made in 1852 and his route lay from Chicago across Illinois and Iowa to Council Bluffs, thence up the Platte River to Fort Laramie, along the Sweetwater River through the South Pass, and down the Humboldt River to the gold diggings in California. The journal records the incidents, the hardships, and the scenery of the trip in considerable detail, and reflects the spirit of the emigration to the gold fields which even in 1852 was so strong that at times the line of teams stretched out over the plains as far as the eye could see. Furthermore, the journal records the experiences - the disappointments, the hopes, the sickness, and the varying fortune - of one who reached California after the best claims had been taken, when the country was ‘all dug up' and prices were abnormally high.'” Kurutz 640 says, “Turnbull left Chicago, Illinois, on April 16, 1852, traveled by way of the California Trail, and reached 'Squaw Hollow,' near Hangtown, on August 18. His next entry reads: ‘went to seek my fortune but found every Creek & Kanyon, covered with men & Hundreds going round looking for work. I thought the country somewhat different to what they represented it to be.’ Turnbull, in the remaining portion of his diary, described his mining experiences, illness, trip to Benicia and Sacramento, and return to prospecting at Newcastle, Secret Diggings, and Spanish Ravine. Appended to this vivid diary is a letter from Secret Diggings dated March 29, 1853, in which Turnbull detailed his mining experiences and complained that the mines had been worked out. Turnbull’s original journal is in the library of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Frederick L. Paxson edited and introduced the manuscript for this publication.” Eberstadt 105:302a says, “An exact transcript (never before put into type) of the extraordinarily interesting diary kept by Turnbull during his trip across the plains from Chicago to Hangtown, in 1852, and during his troubles and experiences at the mines after his arrival at the diggings. His route was unusual. After leaving Kanesville, he took the Mormon Trail on the north side of the Platte. From a point opposite Fort Laramie to the Red Buttes, near which the Oregon Trail cut across from the Platte to the Sweetwater, Turnbull’s description of his route and the country traversed in almost unique." Wrappers lightly worn at edges and with light wear to spine ends, else a very good copy. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

"Vieux Marche Gand". Alter Markt in Gent.

. Radierung und Mischtechnik, auf chamoisfarbenem Japan, links unten betitelt, rechts unten signiert "JdBruycker". 40:56,5 cm. Breitrandiger sehr guter Abdruck!. Photograph Album Depicting Life at the Agnes Memorial [Tuberculosis] Sanatorium at Denver, Colorado in 1914-1915

Denver, 1914. Photograph Album. Very Good. A photographic account of Meriwether's stay at the sanatorium. Album has 45 leaves with 67 photographs, most approximately 3"x4". Album and photographs are all in nice shape. A note in the album indicates Meriwether was from Paragould, Arkansas. Agnes Memorial Sanatorium was a non-profit, a medical campus for low-income, early-onset tuberculosis victims who could probably be successfully treated and returned to work. The complex, was built in 1902 on what is now Sixth Avenue in Denver's Lowry neighborhood by Lawrence C. Philips as a charitable endeavor in honor of his mother who had died of TB. Philips began his career as a clerk at Carnegie Steel and worked his way up to become the company's First Vice-President. He subsequently moved to Colorado where he became a noted philanthropist and served as a senator from 1918 to 1930. The photographs are mostly captioned and show the facilities buildings, staff and patients. A number of the photographs show patients engaged recreation (shooting, billiards, Halloween and Christmas parties), resting, dining (in bed), etc. A fascinating pictorial account of quality restorative medical care for "the White Plague."

        Auguries of Innocence.

Flansham [Sussex]: The Pear Tree Press, Spring 1914 - Small (12mo sized) quarto. Original blue paper-covered card boards, intaglio-printed title label to front cover, pages uncut as intended (each leaf bears a plate impression). Printed on Arches handmade paper. Housed in a custom made white cloth folding case. Wrapper slightly ruffled at the edges, and with a few minors marks to wrappers and a very few internally. An excellent copy of a fragile production. Intalgio printed in blue and silver to a design by James Guthrie, the calligraphy by Lilian Frost, with 16 plates including half-title, title-page, 11 page of text, colophon, and 2 plates of Guthrie's illustrations. First Pear Tree Press edition; number 7 of just 25 copies (the limitation calligraphically inscribed on the leaf following the colophon), a much smaller limitation than the 1/100 more usually met with, and produced using more delicately coloured inks. This limitation is not recorded in the bibliographies. This beautiful production around some of Blake's best-loved lines is generally regarded as Guthrie's first really competent plate book. This copy bears the bookplate of the author (of Quest for Corvo fame), bibliographer (of Yeats), and latter-day celebrant of the fin-de-siècle decadents, A. J. A. Symons (1900-1941), who in 1922 founded the First Editions Club. A nice association to a rare production, printed moreover at a poignant date in the Spring of 1914, with such proleptic lines as: "Nought can deform the human race / Like to the armourer's iron brace; / The soldier armed with sword and gun / Palsied strikes the summer's sun." Or, to use the later words of Philip Larkin, in a poem meditating on that same year: "Never such Innocence again". Bentley 221; Tomkinson 144 [Attributes: First Edition]

Orville Wright Signed Christmas card, sent two weeks after Pearl Harbor, to a pioneer in aeronautical engineering ? in 1917, Wright had written that after he and his brother ?built and flew the first man-carrying flying machine we thought governments would realize the impossibility of winning by surprise attacks ??

Christmas Card signed ?Orville Wright? inside, beneath printed greeting, 5.25? x 4.25? (closed). Glue stain on front and on page opposite signature from mounting 4? x 2.25? black and white photograph of Hawthorn Hill, Orville's home from 1914 to his death in 1948, visible through cut out on cover. With original 5.5? by 4.5? envelope addressed by Wright to ?Dr. and Mrs. Porter Adams / 512 Beacon St. / Boston / Mass.? 3¢ ?For Defense? postage stamp affixed, postmarked Dayton, Ohio, December 20, 1941. Two weeks earlier, a surprise attack by Japan at Pearl Harbor led to the United States declaring war on Japan and her allies, Germany and Italy. ?We thought governments would realize the impossibility of winning by surprise attacks,? wrote Orville Wright on June 21, 1917, two months after the United States declared war on Germany, in response to an aircraft program laid out by the Aircraft Production Board. ?When my brother and I built and flew the first man-carrying flying machine, we thought we were introducing into the world an invention which would make further wars practically impossible ... We thought governments would realize the impossibility of winning by surprise attacks, and that no country would enter into war with another of equal size when it knew that it would have to win by simply wearing out the enemy.? A pioneering student of aeronautical engineering at MIT who pursued this interest throughout his life, Dr. Porter Adams (1894-1945) was President of Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont, from 1934-1939. Adams was Chairman of the Executive Committee (1922-1926) and President (1926-1928) of the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), an organization devoted to furthering the general use of planes in the United States. In 1928, he was technical adviser to the American delegation at the International Civil Aeronautics Conference held in Washington. Orville Wright was an Honorary Guest.

        "Beduinenmädchen", 1917.

Boston, Mass., [1914-1917]. Unknown recipient (begins ?Well you Big Bum?). Fine condition. In full, ?Well you Big Bum, The nerve and arrogance of you to address me in the manner you did. I see you mention the ?HC? as a ?simple matter? (why a ton of iron tied around a drowning man?s leg is as a feather compared to putting you into the HC when you can?t furnish me one man in N.Y. to sign your application.?The ?H.C.? most probably is the Harvard Club in New York.Kennedy continues, ?Why you big fakir do you think I enjoy stalling along over a period of years with this thing. The reason I have done so is because to have done otherwise would have met an inglorious defeat. To attain bank presidencies, affections of H.L. & M.K. etc (with due modesty) required only to put over that energetic, capable, pleasing young man Joe Kennedy and to compare him with you, (why even your thick squash can see the way you suffer by comparison). However I have given up the battle at different times because I have been told you could not be put over and to wait.?If you think I enjoy being turned down you are much mistaken and if you weren?t such a darn good scout ?" I would tell them and you to go to Hell. However, I am still on the job and doing my damdest. I know its hard to be patient but you?ll just have to be. Well this will hold you for a while, take it out of D.P. (whoever that is). As ever Joe?In 1895, Patrick Joseph (?P.J.?) Kennedy helped organize the Columbia Trust Company in Boston.         Manuscript Account of 1914 Lima Military Coup,

n.p., var. 1914 - The author took with him in 1914 a copy of the first edition of Ernest Peixotto's "Pacific Shores from Panama" on a trip to South America. In it he recorded a diary of his trip, and inserted photographs he took along the way. Then, in Lima, he writes: "7 A.M. Feb. 4th. . The revolution broke at 4a.m. this morning. The Palace across the Plaza was taken after an hour and a half of rifle and Gatlin gun fire. and so he fills a page with his impressions of the scene. Guillermo Billinghurst was overthrown on February 4, 1914, in a military coup headed by colonel Oscar R. Benavides, Javier and Manuel Prado, and conservatives members of the Civilista Party. "Feb. 5th . The President was seized + thrown into prison, his only loyal officer the Minister of War was killed." Nearly all of the photographs are filled on their backs with descriptions; most are of a travelogue type, but some are of the coup. On one of a soldier standing before dead bodies, "The soldier . was undecided whether to chase me or have his 'picture tuk'. Vanity won." Book is worn and shaken; sold for the diary and photographs, many of which were tipped to the pages of the book. The name is taken from the owner's signature on the first page of the Preface; but the last name is a trifle indistinct and may be Cockran or something similar. All photographs are signed with "W.S.C." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
