        Tarzan of The Apes.

New York: Grosset & Dunlop, 1914 - Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to front board and spine black, top edge green. Housed in a grey cloth slipcase, illustrated with reproductions of the dust jacket panels. Spine a touch faded; an excellent, bright copy. A fascinating presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his wife on the front free endpaper, two months prior to their wedding, "To Mrs Dearholt, with kindest regards, Mr Burroughs. Tarzan. February 3, 1935", and with Florence's ownership signature to the front pastedown, below her bookplate, "Florence Gilbert Dearholt Burroughs". Florence Gilbert Dearholt (1904–1991) was an American silent film actress of the 1920s, who married entrepreneur Ashton Dearholt in 1926. Ashton Dearholt, a friend of Burroughs, was one of the producers and actors of the film The New Adventures of Tarzan; he and Florence divorced in 1934 after he returned from filming in Guatemala with co-star Ula Holt, and insisted that Holt be able to live in the Dearholt home. Florence married Burroughs in April the following year. This is a reprint of the first book in Burroughs's series about the titular character Tarzan. It was first published in the pulp magazine All-Story Magazine in October 1912, and first appeared in book form in 1914, published in Chicago by A.C. McClurg.

Blitz. Letters from London September and October 1940. Written by Evelyn Lister to her sister Mildred. Printed with aquatints & photographs by Susan Allix

London: 1914 One of fifteen copies. Black goatskin and light brown textured handmade paper, with morocco, reversed leather, and metallic onlays. In slate gray cloth clamshell slipcase. . Large quarto. With five photographs, seven aquatints, two lino cuts and four reproduced sections of the original letters. Of the five photographs, three were taken in the early 1960s with a 'box Brownie' camera. The aquatints, printed in black and brown with hand-coloring, are from drawings made at demolition sites and in the underground. The burning and smoking give different results on each copy. Printed letterpress in 18 pt. Grotesque 215 with 12 pt. Grotesque Italic and 18 p. Granby Light Italic, on Saunders Waterford paper. As new. Allix notes: "In the summer of 2013 I was given a small collection of letters. The owner Mildred or 'Billie' as she was known, had recently died and these were found among her possessions. They were written to her by her sister Evelyn, a young woman in her twenties working in central London, and they date from the 1940s. "On 7 September 1940 the period of sustained bombing known as the Blitz began over London. Evelyn, or Ana as she signs herself, tells of the devastation to the city, the personal fear and the spirit of the people in difficulties around her as she survives in the centre of the nightly raids. These simple and unassuming letters, written descriptively with occasional colloquialisms of the times, begin on 13 September and continue until 27 October 1940. As it will never be possible to have this same experience, designing the book seemed sometimes similar to creating an historical novel. Descriptions, film, artefacts and related reconstructions can help to provide brief windows and snapshots of the time, and Evelyn's letters accompany visual ideas that make them more imaginatively real.

Liber Sententiarum IV [Four Books of the Sentences]; illuminated medieval manuscript on parchment

ILLUMINATED MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT IN LATIN ON PARCHMENT, Northern Italy c. 1240-60. 192 x 133 mm. 184 folios on parchment, preceded by a single flyleaf, complete (collation, i-x12 xi14 xii-xiii8 xiv-xv12 xvi10 [of 12; two canceled blanks]), written in a careful Gothic bookhand in two columns of 38 lines (justification, 125 x 83-84 mm.), ruled in ink with top and bottom horizontal rules full across, prickings in the upper and lower margins, chapter lists in four columns, red rubrics, red and blue running titles, 1-line initials in red or blue with simple pen decoration, 2-line initials in red or blue with contrasting pen decoration, five 3- to 8-line painted initials in orange, dark red, or both, some infilled with green leaves encircling a bright floral motif on blue, green, and yellow or red and blue grounds, edged in orange or yellow, all with white highlights, initials on ff. 3 and 115v followed by the opening words of the text in decorative 2- to 3-line red or blue majuscules with contrasting pen decoration. BINDING: Fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century French binding brown leather over wooden boards, blind-stamped with two sets of double rules forming a rectangular outer frame, with additional double rules in a lattice pattern in the center panel, interspersed with small stamps (fleur-de-lys, the face of Jesus, stag, maltese cross, and armorial shield with fleur-de-lys) placed in the corners of the outer panel, and in three rows across the center panel, spine with three raised bands, green head and tail bands, front pastedown and flyleaf from a single large late fourteenth- or fifteenth-century document in French in a cursive Gothic script, now trimmed on all four sides, two strap and pin fore-edge fastenings, front to back, with pins on the lower board and replacement straps attached to the upper board. TEXT: The Sentences of Peter Lombard was the most important medieval textbook on theology. Peter Lombard (c. 1100-1160) was the first truly magisterial teacher of the emerging schools of Paris, which were to become the greatest of all medieval universities. He studied in Paris under Hugh of Saint-Victor and Abelard, both important influences on his thought. The Sentences, his most important work, dates from the middle of the twelfth century. It is a systematic presentation of Christian theology constructed from a compilation of different sententiae (opinions or judgments) of the Church Fathers. Apart from the Bible, there is no theological work more commented on than the Sentences. Surviving in numerous manuscripts, the Sentences is available only sporadically on the market. This is an unusually small example, decorated with fine colorful initials. PROVENANCE: Copied in Northern Italy in the middle of the thirteenth century, c. 1240-60. Some elements of decoration and penwork suggest that it may have been copied in the Northeast, perhaps in Venice or Padua, where contemporary small-format Bibles may have supplied a model for this unusually small manuscript. Belonged to a monk, one brother Matthew, in the second half of the fourteenth century; an inscription on f. 183v identifies the house where the monk studied, possibly the Abbey of St. Martin in Arces-Sur-Gironde in Southwestern France, and indicates that he obtained the book in Paris. Belonged to the Abbey of St. Martin; fourteenth-century inscription on f. 184. A fifteenth-century institutional inscription on f. 183v may indicate that the book remained there. Sold in Paris, 1914, by Librairie Théophile Belin. Belonged to Hans Fürstenberg (1890-1982), a Jewish banker and noted collector of books and bindings; his bookplate. Passed to Furstenberg-Beaumesnil foundation after his death. CONDITION: Severe cracking along both sides of spine, partially detached, bottom of spine missing, front and back covers somewhat worn, some worming on the opening folios, but otherwise in excellent condition. Full description and photographs available (TM 772).

A VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD MADE BY JOEL ROOT 1802 - 1806 [cover title]

[N.p., 1914. Small folio. Original limp blue morocco, gilt. Inscribed on front fly leaf. Light wear to extremities, slightly heavier to corners and spine ends. Internally clean. Very good. A very interesting narrative of a voyage made by Joel Root (b. 1770), a native of Southington, Connecticut, as supercargo and director of a voyage on the ship Huron which left New Haven in April 1802 in search of hair seals for the American market and fur seals to be sold in China. Clearing Cape Horn in January 1803, they arrived at the Mocha, Lobos, and St. Mary's islands off the coast of South America, where they found a large population of seals. Root and a small party were blown off course in a whale boat and temporarily separated from the Huron. After being briefly imprisoned at Concepcion, they rejoined the Huron on Feb. 25. The captain headed for the Lobos Islands off the coast of Peru, while Root chose to stay behind on St. Mary's Island off the coast of Chile. With part of the crew he was able to take ten thousand seal skins. On the return of the Huron, they set sail on Sept. 25 for the island of Massafuero, one of the Juan Ferdinand Islands, also off the coast of Chile. There Root proposed to take fur seals for the China market, while the Huron returned to the U.S. with its cargo of nineteen thousand skins. "Mr. Root was surprized to find on the island more men than seals....In all there were about 150 men." These were lone sealers left behind by various ships. Root himself took about 4,000 skins, and purchased another 5,000 or more from the loners who had been threatened by the Viceroy of Peru with imprisonment if they failed to leave the island. In fire sale fashion, Root bought the skins for twenty-five to fifty cents each, and upon reaching Canton he sold them for ninety-five cents a piece and invested the proceeds in China goods which he then sold in Hamburg. From Hamburg he sailed for St. Petersburg, where he bought a cargo of mixed goods to sell on his return to the United States. He reached New Haven again on Oct. 30, 1806. Four other manuscript versions of Root's narrative have been located, all in some way different. There is also a published account of the voyages in the PAPERS OF THE NEW HAVEN HISTORICAL SOCIETY (Vol. 5, 1894) which differs markedly from this. That version is told in the first person while this is in the third; it is generally more detailed but omits two substantial sections included here which tell of an encounter with pirates at Sumatra and an incident with a disgruntled sealer who almost murdered Root. The present narrative was written by Dr. Emile B. Gardette, Root's grandson-in-law, based on accounts related to him by Root in 1836. According to the text, Gardette wrote this in 1841. As suggested by some of the wording, he may also have used an account which was written in 1840 by Root himself for his family. The original manuscript of that account is not located, but the New-York Historical Society lists a "transcript of memoir originally written in 1840 and subsequently copied by [Root's] daughter in 1847." East Carolina University's Joyner Library also holds a copy of the 1840 memoir, photocopied from an unspecified source and previously owned by Jake D. Moore of Kingston, North Carolina. The University of Montana likewise holds a copy with more or less the same text as the present copy, though theirs is fifty-six pages rather than seventy- three, and is described as a "photocopy of a typescript" with added photographs and genealogy. As for Gardette's manuscript (the original source for our typescript and the version at the University of Montana), the Connecticut Historical Society lists what it calls a "biography" written circa 1841, a "handwritten narrative" that could be Gardette's account. For remarks on Root's successful enterprise, see Busch's WAR AGAINST SEALS: A HISTORY OF THE NORTH AMERICAN SEAL FISHERY (McGill, 1985).

The Wonderground Map of London Town "The Heart of Britain's Empire Here is Spread Out For Your View it Shows You Many Stations & Bus Routes Not a Few You Have Not the Time to Admire It All? Why Not Take A Map Home to Pin on Your Wall!"

London.: The Westminster Press.. Copyright 1914. [ 1928].. Color pictorial / pictographic map sheet 29 1/4 x 36 1/2 inches, originally folded as issued, now professionally restored and mounted on linen. Tiny chips to edges and corners now infilled, light wear and separations to folds all professionally restored and virtually invisible, the poster appearing fresh and clean. Originally published in 1914 as an advertising poster for the London Underground, this design proved so popular that it was subsequently in several different editions. It has been suggested (on the blog of Tim Bryars) that this particular edition with an image of a greyhound and "On to Wembley" at the upper left of the map was issued at the time of the introduction of greyhound racing at Wembley in December 1927 "with a dog named Spin winning the very first race." The greyhound's jacket in the print carries the letter 'S' endorsing this suggestion. An outstanding and innovative graphic - an explosion of color and humor - the poster sparked a revival in interest in decorative cartography around the world which continues today, a century later. .

Kniga Razskazov o Bitvakh Tekintsev [The Book of Tales about the Battles of the Tekei: Turkmen Historical Poem of the 19th Century]: Published and translated with a Foreword and Notes by A.N. Samoilovich.

Saint Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, Academy of Sciences 1914 - First publication of this important 19th century Turkmen poem with interesting references to the Great Game in Central Asia. It includes the original Turkmen text (with separate title page and pagination), its Russian translation, and several commentaries and articles about the poem. Abdu-s-Sattar Kazy was a religious judge in Khiva in the 19th century. In his poem he described the events he witnessed: the settlement of the Turkmen tribes in the Caspian steppes, their struggle with the Persians, the personality of Tekei Khan Nur-Verdi and his enemies etc. The text of the poem shows that Abdu-s-Sattar Kazy was acquainted with the geography of Persia, Persian manners and customs, had knowledge about Russian troops and knew how Englishmen looked (verse 686 "they plucked their beards and moustache like Englishmen"). The poem is supplemented with scientific commentaries and articles about its language, history and contents and several indexes. Published by the Faculty of Eastern Languages of Saint Petersburg University and translated and edited by Alexander Nikolaevich Samoilovich, 1880-1938, a specialist in Turkic history and philology, member of Russian Academy of Sciences and director of the Institute of the Oriental Studies of the Academy. Samoilovich was a victim of Stalin's political repression. In 1937 he was arrested on the false charge of being a Japanese spy and creating a terrorist organisation and in 1938 he was executed by shooting. Bound in later brown gilt tooled half calf with cloth boards and black gilt label. Original printed wrappers bound in. A very good unopened copy. First edition Octavo, pp.xx, 157, 82, [55, Arabic numbering] one plate. Text in Russian and Turkmen.

Covent Garden receipt for performances by Enrico Caruso signed in full.

Octavo. Dated [London], May 25, 1914. In black ink on blue paper. With annotations in another hand. "Royal Opera Covent Garden Proprietors: The Grand Opera Syndicate, Ltd. General Manager, Mr. Neil Forsyth" printed at head. Caruso acknowledges that he has received £500 to sing in Madame Butterfly on Wednesday, May 25, 1914. Creased at folds; some fading; two staple holes and two small perforations; remnants of adhesive and minor repair to verso; purple handstamp to central portion. . "The winning quality of the sound, the tender mezza voce (particularly in the early years), and his phrasing, based on a rare mastery of legato and portamento, enabled Caruso to sing the French and Italian lyric repertory as well as lighter operas. In addition, his noble, incisive declamation, his broad, generous phrasing, and his vigor in dramatic outbursts made him a notable interpreter of Verdi as well as of French grand opéra. In this repertory his performances were characterized by the irresistible erotic appeal of his timbre allied to a temperament as warm and vehement as his voice. His numerous recordings, now faithfully remastered on CD, not only made him universally famous, they also did much to encourage the acceptance of recording as a medium for opera." Rodolfo Celletti and Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online. Caruso sang Lieutenant Pinkerton in this performance of Puccini's opera. The 1914 season would be Caruso's last at Covent Garden. World War One erupted shortly after the season concluded, and Caruso did not return after the War's end in 1918.

        Autograph letter signed ("Fz. Marc").

Sindelsdorf, 18. IV. 1914. - Large 4to. 4 pp. on bifolium. Stamped letterhead, ruled paper. Fine letter to Hugo Ball (1886-1927), who was working then as a dramaturg at the Munich Kammerspiele. Marc refuses to realize a theatre project under their current circumstances: "I would rather wait until we can really create something new, with our own ensemble and with perfect freedom of movement. Otherwise, nothing solid comes to pass. Then we would have to engage Kokoschka, Kandinsky, Klee, and Macke, and as musicians we must get the Schoenberg circle (Schoenberg, Webern, Berg and others) [.]". - Furthermore, Marc mentions the Russian painter Vladimir Georgievitsch Bechteev (1878-1971), a member of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München ("Munich New Artist's Association"), who was friendly with the "Blaue Reiter" ("Blue Rider"). Bechteev was involved in the theatre project discussed by Hugo Ball, which fell apart, as did other plans with members of the "Blue Rider". In 1914, he went back to Russia, and was called up to the army. After WWII, he worked as a set designer and illustrator. Franz Marc. Briefe, Schriften, Aufzeichnungen (Leipzig 1989), p. 95.
