London: Hodder & Stoughton, n.d. (1914). First trade edition. Quarto (10 7/8 x 8 3/8 in; 277 x 214 mm). In others, he reduces the scale and adds a richness of detail to create an effect similar to that seen in Perian and Indian miniature art. The pictures are generally serious but Dulac's ever-present humor creeps in. And always there is the Oriental inspiration" (Hughey)."Mr. Dulac has provided pictures which preserve to a marvel the Persian feeling" (Times Literary Supplement, Dec. 10, 1914)."It may have been his friendship with the celebrated connoisseurs, Ricketts and Shannon, that led Dulac to a renewed and closer acquaintance with those Oriental and Greek primitives, which he had already learned to love in his youth.Persian miniatures especially have fascinated him.the fantasies which Scheherazade wove.need a jeweled commentator, and Dulac alone possesses the necessary gifts" (Art critic, Martin Birnbaum, Introduction, Catalog of Dulac exhibition, Scott & Fowles Gallery, NY, December 1916).Hughey 35a.         Sinbad the Sailor & other Stories from the Arabian Nights

London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1914]. Quarto. Original vellum, gilt lettered and decorated spine and front cover, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, yellow silk ties. Colour frontispiece and 22 colour plates by Edmund Dulac, tipped in (with captioned tissue guards), plates and letterpress within ornamental borders printed in pale bisque Discreet book label of H. J. Hintze on verso of front free endpaper. A very nice copy. First and limited Dulac edition, number 104 of 500 copies signed by the illustrator. "The exotic stories he illustrated struck a new chord in Dulac. They allowed him to enlarge his skill at caricature, and at the same time to sharpen his miniaturist's technique and to develop his lyrical sense of tone and composition. The sources he turned to were Japanese prints, which he had studied in his youth, with their flat colour and assymetry, and the high detail and colour of Indian and Persian miniatures" (ODNB). These influences are very clear in this sumptuous gift book; one of the other stories collected here being Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.

        Shakespeare's Comedy of A Midsummer-Night's Dream

1914. first edition. The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth[ROBINSON, W. Heath, illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, [William]. Shakespeare's Comedy of A Midsummer-Night's Dream. With Illustrations by W. Heath Robinson. London: Published by Constable & Co., 1914.First trade edition, first issue. Large quarto (11 3/16 x 8 5/8 inches; 284 x 222 mm.). xii, [4], 185, [2], [1, printer?'s imprint] pp. Twelve color plates tipped onto cream mounts with beige rule borders and caption in beige at foot, with original tissue-guards. Forty-seven full-page (including title) and nineteen smaller black and white drawings in the text (the ?"List of Illustrations?" lists thirty-two full-page black and white drawings).Publishers 'primary' binding of green cloth over boards, front cover pictorially stamped dark blue, gray, pink, tan and gilt. Spine pictorially stamped in gilt and colors, top stained dark green, others uncut. Corners very lightly bumped. Minimal foxing. Neat ink presentation dated 1920 on front free end-paper. A near fine copy of a now very scarce Heath Robinson title.?"As with Twelfth Night, Heath Robinson set out to recreate the atmosphere of the play rather than to provide a pictorial record of the action, this time with a subject that gave him greater scope for his imagination. It is the black and white illustrations that dominate the book and they fall into two main groups, the woodland scenes and the drawings of the rustics. In the woodland scenes Heath Robinson has developed a decorative style of drawing foliage which was first used by Beardsley in a number of his drawings for The Savoy…Heath Robinson started to refine the technique in the drawings to Poe?'s poems…In A Midsummer Night?'s Dream the style is refined further and combined with solid black skies and strong foreground patterns of wild flowers or horse chestnut leaves to produce a series of drawings that have great depth and variety of texture. These provide the ideal setting for that ?'most wonderful moonlight night in fantasy?'. In sharp contrast are the series of pictures of the rustic characters Quince, Snug, Bottom, Flute, Snout and Starveling. They are drawn with great economy of line, with little or no supporting detail in the background…The coloured illustrations are very much an integral part of the book, providing variety of texture and tone, and if anything fulfil a supporting function in the overall scheme. With their subdued colouring and incidental subjects they add to the atmosphere of the book without becoming the focus of attention?" (Beare, pp. 43-44).Beare 77, Lewis, p. 216.

Photographs - Early Views of Bangkok - Siam (Thailand|) Java

Siam, 1914. Siam [Thailand], Java, circa 1914 - 1919. Album of photographs featuring with early views of Bangkok views of the Grand Palace and its enormous monuments. Taken by Percy William May who was involved in the photographic paper trade for a British company established in Siam, and thus frequently travelled a circuit throughout Southeast Asia. Contains 76 gelatin silver print photographs (plus a scant few duplicate views with slightly different paper or lighting). 8vo. brown cloth album with photographs neatly ensconced behind window mounts, recto and verso onto 24 cardstock leaves. Photographs measure approximately 9,5 x 7 cm. Album measures approximately 24 x 16 cm. Very Good Condition. Photographs of Siam from this period are scarce. Glimpses of horse-drawn carriages and rickshaws on dirt streets, exquisite colonial hotel accommodations juxtaposed against rudimentary thatched homes on stilts, a special celebration, ancient architecture, Buddhist monuments, and sacred grounds, the present album contains an intriguing assortment of snapshot scenes captured during both business and pleasure travels throughout Southeast Asia, specifically while stationed in Bangkok, and whilst on a tour to Java in Indonesia. Approximately half of the album is centered in Bangkok. Especially uncommon is a group of 22 snapshot photographs taken while Mr. May attended the Wat Phi Fair in Bangkok from 3-7 April 1919. In the bustling streets he captures market vendors, and indigenous Thai people coming from near and far for the event. A nostalgic river scene captures a handcrafted partially covered boat floating past homes built over the water, supported only by stilts. Several photographs show a luxurious bungalow residence. Burgess' quarters were at a bungalow situated on Hong Kong Bank Lane in Bangkok, possibly then part of the Oriental Hotel where he is known to have stayed while in Bangkok. [Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, it was the first hotel built in Thailand when it opened in 1879, and it is now one of two flagship properties of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.] In 1914 Mr. Burgess and his wife made a tour of Java, visiting among other places, the Taman Sari Water Castle, a site of a former royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, showing here a sacred well and some fallen structures wrecked in the 1867 earthquake. They also made the journey to the volcanos Salak, Bromo, Battok, etc., Mrs. Burgess posing by a rock face along the road. We find views of the circular driveway entrance to the Empire Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, shortly it opened for business, with rickshaws carrying passengers to and from the front gate. [Attracting the finest of visitors, advertisements at the time, boasted that it was "fitted with electric lights and fans... private bathrooms attached."] In Malaysia, a stop was made to Padang Besar, which lies on the Thailand border. Photographs include the railway station and a small traditional village. Percy William May (1181-1958) established himself in Bangkok as a representative for Spicer Brothers, a British wholesale stationery company which was established and trading in Southeast Asia. Spicer Bros. (Foreign & Colonial) Ltd. is listed in the 1914 Bangkok and Siam Directory, with Percy W. May as its representative. The company had a printing office in Bangkok and did some photographic work. Percy married Emmie Amelia Burgess in 1913, and she evidently stayed with him in Bangkok for some before the couple returned to England in 1921. Spicer Brothers Ltd. was a partnership between Henry, Edward, and Augustin Spicer, wholesale stationers and suppliers of sensitised albumen paper known from the early 1880s. At some point William Gage Spicer was also a partner in the Spicer Brothers firm. Later called Blackfriars Photographic and Sensitising Supply Co., the partnership was dissolved by mutual consent in March 1895 and the company was sold. In 1898 when the company was merged with the London Photographic Supply Co. to form the London & Blackfriars Photographic Supply Co. In 1899 London & Blackfriars sold the sensitised paper portion of the firm's operations to Houghton. In Southeast Asia, the company Spicer Bros. (Foreign & Colonial) Ltd. continued with the family name. Percy William May is named in the 1914 Bangkok and Siam Directory, as the company's representative. His quarters were at a bungalow situated on Hong Kong Bank Lane in Bangkok, and also used as the mess for employees of the Siam Forest Company Ltd. . Very Good.

Table alphabétique in fine. Petite déchirure en tête de la couverture du tome second, dont la page de garde présente des froissements. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Together with a particular description of thirty-three species of American Oaks and eighteen species of pinus with appendices containing a list of the plants introduced by Douglas and an account of his death in 1834. David Douglas was a Scottish botanist who made three separate explorationtrips from England to North America. The Second expedition starting in 1824 was his most successful. The Royal Horticultural Society sent him back on a plant-hunting expedition in the Pacific Northwest that ranks among the great botanical explorations of the generation. Douglas introduced the Douglas-fir into cultivation in 1827 as well as several other trees including the Sugar Pine and the Noble Fir. These trees transformed the British Landscape and timber industry. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally, smart with some rubbing and bumping. Sunning and light marking to boards.         Blitz. Letters from London September and October 1940. Written by Evelyn Lister to her sister Mildred. Printed with aquatints & photographs by Susan Allix

London: 1914 One of fifteen copies. Black goatskin and light brown textured handmade paper, with morocco, reversed leather, and metallic onlays. In slate gray cloth clamshell slipcase. . Large quarto. With five photographs, seven aquatints, two lino cuts and four reproduced sections of the original letters. Of the five photographs, three were taken in the early 1960s with a 'box Brownie' camera. The aquatints, printed in black and brown with hand-coloring, are from drawings made at demolition sites and in the underground. The burning and smoking give different results on each copy. Printed letterpress in 18 pt. Grotesque 215 with 12 pt. Grotesque Italic and 18 p. Granby Light Italic, on Saunders Waterford paper. As new. Allix notes: "In the summer of 2013 I was given a small collection of letters. The owner Mildred or 'Billie' as she was known, had recently died and these were found among her possessions. They were written to her by her sister Evelyn, a young woman in her twenties working in central London, and they date from the 1940s. "On 7 September 1940 the period of sustained bombing known as the Blitz began over London. Evelyn, or Ana as she signs herself, tells of the devastation to the city, the personal fear and the spirit of the people in difficulties around her as she survives in the centre of the nightly raids. These simple and unassuming letters, written descriptively with occasional colloquialisms of the times, begin on 13 September and continue until 27 October 1940. As it will never be possible to have this same experience, designing the book seemed sometimes similar to creating an historical novel. Descriptions, film, artefacts and related reconstructions can help to provide brief windows and snapshots of the time, and Evelyn's letters accompany visual ideas that make them more imaginatively real.

Sinbad the Sailor & other Stories from the Arabian Nights

London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1914]. Quarto (273 x 204 mm). Recent red full morocco for Asprey, decorative gilt spine, single-line gilt border on sides enclosing decorative gilt panel and motif of a cross-legged figure in multi-coloured morocco onlays, all edges gilt, two-line gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers; with the original cloth covers and spine bound-in. Colour frontispiece and 22 colour plates by Edmund Dulac, tipped in (with captioned tissue guards), plates and letterpress within ornamental borders printed in pale bisque A handsomely bound copy. First Dulac edition.

        Tarzan of The Apes.

New York: Grosset & Dunlop,, 1914. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to front board and spine black, top edge green. Housed in a grey cloth slipcase, illustrated with reproductions of the dust jacket panels. Spine a touch faded; an excellent, bright copy. A fascinating presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his wife on the front free endpaper, two months prior to their wedding, "To Mrs Dearholt, with kindest regards, Mr Burroughs. Tarzan. February 3, 1935", and with Florence's ownership signature to the front pastedown, below her bookplate, "Florence Gilbert Dearholt Burroughs". Florence Gilbert Dearholt (1904?-1991) was an American silent film actress of the 1920s, who married entrepreneur Ashton Dearholt in 1926. Ashton Dearholt, a friend of Burroughs, was one of the producers and actors of the film The New Adventures of Tarzan; he and Florence divorced in 1934 after he returned from filming in Guatemala with co-star Ula Holt, and insisted that Holt be able to live in the Dearholt home. Florence married Burroughs in April the following year. This is a reprint of the first book in Burroughs's series about the titular character Tarzan.
