LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF "BILLY" DIXON OF ADOBE WALLS, TEXAS PANHANDLE.

[Co-Operative Printing Co., 1914]., 1914. First edition. Signed and dated on front fly leaf by Olive K. Dixon, wife of Billy Dixon. 8vo. Green cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, 320 pp., illustrations from old photographs. "A narrative in which is described many things relating to the early Southwest, with an account of the fight between Indians and buffalo hunters at Adobe Walls, and the desperate engagement at Buffalo Wallow, for which Congress voted the Medal of Honor to the survivors." Born in West Virginia in 1850, Billy Dixon lived in Missouri from 1862 until 1865, when he took a job with a freight contractor as a bull-whacker and mule-skinner in Kansas. He freighted throughout western Kansas and Nebraska, and eastern Colorado for 4 years. In 1869, Dixon joined a hunting and trapping venture in the Saline River Valley, northwest of Fort Hays. Billy's excellent marksmanship soon led him to the highly profitable trade in buffalo hides. He invested in a supply store and did quite well until his partner "sold out" and took off with the proceeds during Billy's absence. He hunted the Texas Panhandle in the early and mid 1870's. Billy Dixon was one of 28 men and 1 woman who fought off a large party of hostile Indians in the second Battle of Adobe Walls. He scouted for Gen. Nelson Miles in 1874, when carrying dispatches to Fort Supply, Dixon and 5 others were attacked by Indians. Billy Dixon received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his part in the action. Still scouting for General Miles, Dixon was present at the rescue of the Germaine sisters from the Cheyenne in November, 1874. Dixon saved the Nolan Expedition in 1877 by leading them to water while in pursuit of hostile Comanches on the Staked Plains. Dixon returned to civilian life in 1883. He worked on the Turkey Trot Ranch before homesteading at the site of the original Adobe Walls. Eventually he homesteaded again in Cimarron County, Oklahoma, where he died in 1913. An excellent biography. Minor rub at foot of spine and corner, else a near fine, bright, tight, square copy. An unusually bright, attractive copy and the nicest copy we have handled. Rare,

Taft was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1914. Additionally, he lectured on Legal Ethics at Boston University from 1918 to 1921. The Wise Virgins

Edward Arnold, London 1914 - This is a Very Good - Copy of this book in Publisher's original brown cloth with black title lettering to spine and upper cover and with vertical white lines running down the uppercover and also to spine of the book .The outer boards are showing some blotched stained marks to thwe upper cover and top edge of the lower cover. This is a very very scarce title indeed and is Leonard Woolf’s second novel which was published two years after the Author’s marriage to Virginia Stephen and begun to be written during their honeymoon. The autobiographical elements of the book are well known and it's acknowledged that Camilla Lawrence in The Wise Virgins is really a portrait of the Author's wife, Virginia Woolf. The book looks back to the early courting days after Leonard's return from Ceylon. This particular copy bears the name of Lytton Strachey (Bloomsbury Group) to the front endpaper. This title was acquired from a very impressive private collection of 20th Century Literature and Fiction with strict adherence paid in obtaining rare highlights in exellent condition. It appears to have been sent to Sotheby's Auction by James Strachey in 1965. The book has a firm binding with NO hinge weakness and there is NO leaning or rolling to spine. There is some spotting to the top edge of the book and also to the fore-edge of the book but nothing untoward for a title of this age.Great copy for the collector of this Very Rare title in original cloth. It's Woolf's second and last novel and almost unobtainable as it's circulation was restricted owing to his family's acute displeasure. The Bloomsbury Circle of which Stachey and Leonard Woolf were both invloved. They were very close and corresponded almost daily.Their early correspondence was dripping with their sexual drives and in particular with Strachey's boasting of his homosexual activities. They discussed issues of philiosophy, art and politics at length.Scarce title with this wonderful Lytton Strachey Association present and a genuine unique item.8vo 336pp plus 8 pages of ads at the rear of the book.First Edition 1st Impression Size: 8vo - over 5¾" - 7¾" Tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Hodder & Stoughton, n.d. (1914). First trade edition. Quarto (10 7/8 x 8 3/8 in; 277 x 214 mm). In others, he reduces the scale and adds a richness of detail to create an effect similar to that seen in Perian and Indian miniature art. The pictures are generally serious but Dulac's ever-present humor creeps in. And always there is the Oriental inspiration" (Hughey)."Mr. Dulac has provided pictures which preserve to a marvel the Persian feeling" (Times Literary Supplement, Dec. 10, 1914)."It may have been his friendship with the celebrated connoisseurs, Ricketts and Shannon, that led Dulac to a renewed and closer acquaintance with those Oriental and Greek primitives, which he had already learned to love in his youth.Persian miniatures especially have fascinated him.the fantasies which Scheherazade wove.need a jeweled commentator, and Dulac alone possesses the necessary gifts" (Art critic, Martin Birnbaum, Introduction, Catalog of Dulac exhibition, Scott & Fowles Gallery, NY, December 1916).Hughey 35a.         Sinbad the Sailor & other Stories from the Arabian Nights

London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1914]. Quarto. Original vellum, gilt lettered and decorated spine and front cover, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, yellow silk ties. Colour frontispiece and 22 colour plates by Edmund Dulac, tipped in (with captioned tissue guards), plates and letterpress within ornamental borders printed in pale bisque Discreet book label of H. J. Hintze on verso of front free endpaper. A very nice copy. First and limited Dulac edition, number 104 of 500 copies signed by the illustrator. "The exotic stories he illustrated struck a new chord in Dulac. They allowed him to enlarge his skill at caricature, and at the same time to sharpen his miniaturist's technique and to develop his lyrical sense of tone and composition. The sources he turned to were Japanese prints, which he had studied in his youth, with their flat colour and assymetry, and the high detail and colour of Indian and Persian miniatures" (ODNB). These influences are very clear in this sumptuous gift book; one of the other stories collected here being Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.

        Shakespeare's Comedy of A Midsummer-Night's Dream

1914. first edition. The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth[ROBINSON, W. Heath, illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, [William]. Shakespeare's Comedy of A Midsummer-Night's Dream. With Illustrations by W. Heath Robinson. London: Published by Constable & Co., 1914.First trade edition, first issue. Large quarto (11 3/16 x 8 5/8 inches; 284 x 222 mm.). xii, [4], 185, [2], [1, printer?'s imprint] pp. Twelve color plates tipped onto cream mounts with beige rule borders and caption in beige at foot, with original tissue-guards. Forty-seven full-page (including title) and nineteen smaller black and white drawings in the text (the ?"List of Illustrations?" lists thirty-two full-page black and white drawings).Publishers 'primary' binding of green cloth over boards, front cover pictorially stamped dark blue, gray, pink, tan and gilt. Spine pictorially stamped in gilt and colors, top stained dark green, others uncut. Corners very lightly bumped. Minimal foxing. Neat ink presentation dated 1920 on front free end-paper. A near fine copy of a now very scarce Heath Robinson title.?"As with Twelfth Night, Heath Robinson set out to recreate the atmosphere of the play rather than to provide a pictorial record of the action, this time with a subject that gave him greater scope for his imagination. It is the black and white illustrations that dominate the book and they fall into two main groups, the woodland scenes and the drawings of the rustics. In the woodland scenes Heath Robinson has developed a decorative style of drawing foliage which was first used by Beardsley in a number of his drawings for The Savoy…Heath Robinson started to refine the technique in the drawings to Poe?'s poems…In A Midsummer Night?'s Dream the style is refined further and combined with solid black skies and strong foreground patterns of wild flowers or horse chestnut leaves to produce a series of drawings that have great depth and variety of texture. These provide the ideal setting for that ?'most wonderful moonlight night in fantasy?'. In sharp contrast are the series of pictures of the rustic characters Quince, Snug, Bottom, Flute, Snout and Starveling. They are drawn with great economy of line, with little or no supporting detail in the background…The coloured illustrations are very much an integral part of the book, providing variety of texture and tone, and if anything fulfil a supporting function in the overall scheme. With their subdued colouring and incidental subjects they add to the atmosphere of the book without becoming the focus of attention?" (Beare, pp. 43-44).Beare 77, Lewis, p. 216.
