Documents scientifiques de la Mission Tilho 1906-1909.

Imprimerie Nationale, Paris, 1910-1914. So vollständig. Original-Broschur-Bände, unbeschnitten, teils unaufgeschnitten. LX, 412 S. / VIII, 631 S. / VII, 484 S. 4°.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Photo Album - WWI - Ancient Ruins of Greece & Tunisia - Enormous Scrapbook Album with Journal Entries

Greece & Tunisia, 1914. England, Greece, Tunisia, 1914-1920. Scrapbook album of a young Scottish woman who volunteered with the Red Cross in the First World War, its two principal points of interest being the war, and a subsequent journey to important archaeological sites of Greek, Roman and Carthaginian origin. Contains approximately 180 original gelatin silver print photographs from her travels abroad, 6 postcards, 6 manuscript letters written immediately at war's end, sentimental wartime documents, programmes, certificates, and some personalia. Items are mounted onto heavy cardstock leaves. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 4 x 6 cm, and the largest 21,5 x 27,5 cm, many captioned in manuscript. Large leather bound folio volume measuring approximately 19 x 38 x 7 cm. Front board turn in is stamped in gilt "Asprey, No. 166 New Bond Street W." Foxing to margins, minor age-toning to some images, otherwise in Very Good Condition. Photographs of antiquities from ancient civilizations which once dominated the regions now known Greece and Tunisia, intermixed with twentieth century war memories of an empathetic young Scottish nurse, this album presents, albeit parenthetically, a striking visual reminder of man's interminable cycle between strife and harmony, to conquer for power and trade for survival. Gladys Margaret Mackinnon is from the small village of Clachan in North Kintyre. After attending Cheltenham Ladies College, Gladys received a certificate for nursing from the St. John Ambulance Association in London, March 1910. She joined the British Red Cross Society in London after passing her examination on 31 August 1914. During the Great War she volunteered in England. Gladys Margaret Mackinnon who died in 1973 at 84 yrs of age is buried in the Clachan Cemetery in Kintyre Peninsula, Argyll, Scotland. She may be a relative (possibly a niece) of Scottish ship-owner Sir William Mackinnon (1823-1893), 1st Baronet of Loup and Balinakill, also resident of Clachan, who built up substantial commercial interests in India and East Africa, and who established the British-India Steam Navigation Company, as well as the Imperial British East Africa Company. He was Colonial Head of British East Africa, from 1887-1889 and was well acquainted with Henry Morton Stanley, being most instrumental in promoting and funding 1886 Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He married Janet Colquhoun on 12 May 1856. They had no children. Further research is warranted to ascertain a family connection. Miss Mackinnon's tour of Greece yields numerous photographs, including some panoramic views, and snapshots of ancient sites. Olympia, Sparta, Mycenae, Tiryns, Delos, and Delphi where she entered the shrine of Apollo, are all featured here. Evidently she also made a horse-back journey to the Bronze Age archaeological site of Knossos. A distant view of the island castle of Bourtzi in the harbour of Nafplio, which was built as a fortress in the fifteenth century and converted into a residence for executioners in the late nineteenth century. In Athens she captures lovely snapshot images of ancient sites such as the Parthenon, the Acropolis, the Arch of Hadrian, the Temple of Zeus, the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates and so forth. The journey also included visits to Ajaccio in Corsica and to Tunisia. In Carthage and Kairouan [Kirwan] the people and their custom captivated her attention, as well as the Punic and Roman archaeological sites. From Carthage, which became the greatest of the ancient Phoenician trading cities, photographs show Baths of Antoninus in Carthage, the El DJem Amphitheatre, and more. Additional photographs continue to illustrate ruins and highlights from touring other continental European countries. Pertaining to the Great War, Miss Mackinnon includes two photographs of the destruction caused by Zeppelin bombs at Harwich in 1915. Placed alongside these is a manuscript letter from the administration of Middlesex Hospital thanking her for her service. [Harwich was the victim of several Zeppelin raids in 1915.] Her Red Cross and St John Ambulance certificates are also present. She further preserves a few letters received from friends in November 1918, all of which reflect on tragedy and victory, marking the end of the war. Some excerpts: "Peace enters in at last! Thanks be to God who giveth us the victory... hundreds captured from the Germans..." "I am now able to realize that we have peace once more or at least the killing has ceased!" "... and then came the wonderful armistice. " "The glorious news has come at last. Victorious peace... great joy tempered with sorrow." . Very Good.

SEN SHOKU TAIKAN: GREAT COLLECTION OF PATTERNS

Kyoto 1914, Unsodo. Stiff pictorial wrs., accordion folded,4. vol. set, very clean, title slips, 146 woodcut color plates,. 156 [pages], no stain, no worming, very clean copy, in grass. folding Chitsu case ivory pegs, 18 x 25 cm. FIRST & EDITION. This is a stunning design work. Often called a "designer's dream or wish book." The work is replete with the designs and patterns found on Kimono, Haori [jackets], a wide variety of lacquerer ware, textiles, craftsmen's articles such as furniture, sword and other martial arts items, umbrellas, Noren [a kind of hanging curtain], Mon [heraldry items found on art objects of a wide variety], objects d'arte, ceramics, porcelains, handmade Washi paper and so many others. *** THE COVERS: The covers are polychrome [i.e. color] woodblock printed in four colors, including a very rare silver finish pattern. This silver was rare because of the technique involving the use of crushed clam shells which had a silver lining, the same kind of material found on pearls. The shell lining was crushed, ground smooth, and then used with gesso to create an ink that was used on woodblocks to print the design. Stunning sheen and light reflecting qualities. The folding Chitsu case has had some hinge repair some time ago with very natural matching Washi fiber paper, which reinfoces teh hinge. * THE SET: The set is complete in four matching volumes, each bound with the same colorful front covers, the backs are also the same, cream color matching the upper left color on the front. *** BINDING FORMAT: The books are bound in a traditional accordion folding format, with spines loose a issued. The book can also be displayed in a linear format with the left end of each joined page standing up showing two illustrated pages in each double folded leaf. A lovely effect. The book can also be laid flat to show a double-page illustration. As usual the book opens right to left. Contained in the original grass-covered Chitsu or folding case with ivory clips. The art of the traditional Japanese book ! *** SIZE: Each volume is 18 x 25 cm. and about 1.5 cm. thick. *** THE ILLUSTRATIONS: The stunning polychrome woodcuts represent a good number of colors for which a different wood block was cut then printed, some of the prints have 6-8 or even more colors per illustration. There are a good number of double-page single large illustrations, other pages have 3-4 individual illustrations per double page. The subject of the illustrations are traditional designs, firefly, flowers, geometric designs, chrysanthemum, butterfly, phoenix, Buddhist themes, crane, birds, wisteria, fans, Momiji [Japanese maple], peony, rabbit, cherry, dragon, morning glories, bamboo, dahlia &c. *** CONDITION: The work has a trivial amount of wear on the cover outer edges and with a very minor amount of rubbing. The contents are exceptionally bright, clean and flawless. The book is crisp, appears as if it was barely opened and viewed. There are no thumb or other marks whatsoever. *** A SUPERB ADDITION TO ANY ART AND DESIGN LIBRARY ! * Color scans can be sent by email.         Shakespeare's Comedy of A Midsummer-Night's Dream

1914. first edition. The Most Complete and Beautiful Specimen Before Us of an Illustrated Book as a Single Work of Art"(The Times Literary Supplement)[ROBINSON, W. Heath, illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, [William]. Shakespeare?'s Comedy of A Midsummer-Night?'s Dream. With Illustrations by W. Heath Robinson. London: Constable & Co., 1914. Edition DeLuxe. 1/250 copies signed by W. Heath Robinson (this copy being #143). Large quarto (11 5/8 x 8 7/8 inches; 295 x 225 mm.). xii, [iv], 185, [2], [1, printer?'s imprint] pp. Twelve mounted color plates, each with a titled tissue-guard. Forty-seven full-page (including title) and nineteen smaller black and white drawings in the text (the ?"List of Illustrations?" lists thirty-two full-page black and white drawings).Handsomely rebound ca. 1970 in full dark green calf, covers ruled in gilt, spine with five raised bands ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, marbled end-papers, top edge rough trimmed, others uncut. A very nice example of this very scarce Heath Robinson signed limited edition."The streams of fairies and goblins floating across the woodland scenes in Heath Robinson's illustrations to A Midsummer Night's Dream are very much like Dicky Doyle's little figures on the cover of Punch, yet these illustrations are among the most personal and most successful that Heath Robinson ever drew." (Lewis)."There are several very pretty coloured plates, including one of a tree-lined river bank, with Heath Robinson's inevitable foxgloves in the foreground, a Greek temple across the river and the reclining figures of Hermia and Helena 'Emptying our bosoms of their counsel sweet', but the black-and-white drawings are the illustrations that add such distinction to this edition of A Midsummer Night's Dream, of which he was so justly proud." (Lewis)."At the height of his powers as an illustrator... this book was to be his finest achievement. In it he consolidated all that he had learnt during the past eighteen years... Heath Robinson considered [the] book to be his greatest achievement, and when it was published in October 1914 a reviewer [in the Times Literary Supplement, Dec. 10, 1914] described it as: 'The most complete and beautiful specimen before us of an illustrated book as a single work of art'" (W.         1914 HANDWRITTEN SPORTS DIARY of MLB NY YANKEES BASEBALL PLAYER ALEX "TOM" BURR

New York 1914. New York, 1914. HANDWRITTEN DIARY of ALEX THOMAS BURR who was a MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER for the NEW YORK YANKEES in 1914. Diary for the Year 1914, with diary entries for February 27 through June 6, 1914. A.T. Burr's ownership signature is on the front free endpaper. There are 90 daily pages with his handwritten entries (the February to June period), followed by a page of addresses, and then 40 pages of detailed daily expenses. Softcover, leather bound blank book titled "Daylogue For All Years" containing lined pages with printed daily dates (each page a separate day), gilt title on the cover, gilt page edges, 4.5x6 inches. Burr was on the New York Yankees for the entire 1914 season. He was brought in as a Pitcher, having had exceptional seasons at Choate prep school. "One of the most promising ballplayers I have ever seen." - Big Ed Walsh, Hall of Famer. Though an outstanding prospect, and a widely reported prize catch by the Yanks, Burr spent his year in the Majors pitching for batting practices, in exhibition games, and sitting on the bench. He ended up playing in only one major league game, and that was as a substitute outfielder for one half inning. Because he was with the team for the season, and because he was a literate writer, Burr conveys what it was like to be brought into the Yanks as a highly sought after prospect, moving around with the team, spending time with his teammates, getting scolded by the team's manager, getting paid for doing nothing, etc. Burr writes a daily log of what he did, saw and thought, including his growing increasingly tired of sitting on the bench, noting teams and scores of various Yankee games, rainouts, eating out with friends and teammates, batting practice, going to plays, who he is dating, killing time by playing cards, gambling, traveling by train and bus, playing at the polo fields, working out, what time he woke up, etc. At the back he notes daily expenses such as car fare, haircuts, food, cigarettes, etc. An exceptional, personal, handwritten account of a season with the New York Yankees, by a literate and observant young man, whose life was soon after cut short when he died piloting a plane in France in WWI. GOOD Condition: The covers are worn at their spine ends, edges and folds, but are still sturdy; the gilt edges have some scratches but the gilt remains bright; the front and rear pastedowns are starting to pull from the covers; the inner pages are nice and clean with handwriting is bright, clear and fully legible. Here are some excerpts from various daily entries (I put notable names in caps): February 27: Left Chicago 6:35 with GEORGE WRIGHT for Houston, Texas, training camp (for) New York Americans... February 28: ...Met Mr. Irwin (ARTHUR ALBERT IRWIN) and sixteen players... Played stud all afternoon with Doc Barrett (CHARLES "DOC" BARRETT), JIMMY WALSH, Maisel (FRITZ MAISEL), Hutchinson. Won about six bucks. March 2: ...Warmed up a bit, hit a few, ran around field twice and walked in. Arm felt fine. Legs tired and stiff... Mr. Chance (FRANK CHANCE) spoke about training rules. March 25: Arrived at Birmingham at 11 am. No game on account of rain. Left at 3 o'clock for Atlanta. Played poker all the way to Atlanta. Arrived there at 8.15. Shot craps until 11.30. Lost. April 2: ...Had breakfast, went out to Polo Grounds. Got new uniform and locker 11. Looks like I might stay for a while... Had lunch, went over to Brooklyn for game. We lost 5-4. Pieh (CY PIEH) forced a man in and lost the game. Came back to N.Y. Had dinner, went... April 6: ...Went out to Ebbets Field to practice. Came back, had dinner, went to Winter Garden with FRITZ MAISEL. Came home, had something to eat... April 19: Pitched against Newark (an exhibition game). Newark lost 4-2. Allowed 6 singles, passed 3. Several errors cost us game. Bed early. April 21: ...Practice all morning, beat out Washington in Ninth 3-2. Played center field for 1/2 an inning. Movies and bed early. Good

LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF "BILLY" DIXON OF ADOBE WALLS, TEXAS PANHANDLE.

[Co-Operative Printing Co., 1914]., 1914. First edition. Signed and dated on front fly leaf by Olive K. Dixon, wife of Billy Dixon. 8vo. Green cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, 320 pp., illustrations from old photographs. "A narrative in which is described many things relating to the early Southwest, with an account of the fight between Indians and buffalo hunters at Adobe Walls, and the desperate engagement at Buffalo Wallow, for which Congress voted the Medal of Honor to the survivors." Born in West Virginia in 1850, Billy Dixon lived in Missouri from 1862 until 1865, when he took a job with a freight contractor as a bull-whacker and mule-skinner in Kansas. He freighted throughout western Kansas and Nebraska, and eastern Colorado for 4 years. In 1869, Dixon joined a hunting and trapping venture in the Saline River Valley, northwest of Fort Hays. Billy's excellent marksmanship soon led him to the highly profitable trade in buffalo hides. He invested in a supply store and did quite well until his partner "sold out" and took off with the proceeds during Billy's absence. He hunted the Texas Panhandle in the early and mid 1870's. Billy Dixon was one of 28 men and 1 woman who fought off a large party of hostile Indians in the second Battle of Adobe Walls. He scouted for Gen. Nelson Miles in 1874, when carrying dispatches to Fort Supply, Dixon and 5 others were attacked by Indians. Billy Dixon received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his part in the action. Still scouting for General Miles, Dixon was present at the rescue of the Germaine sisters from the Cheyenne in November, 1874. Dixon saved the Nolan Expedition in 1877 by leading them to water while in pursuit of hostile Comanches on the Staked Plains. Dixon returned to civilian life in 1883. He worked on the Turkey Trot Ranch before homesteading at the site of the original Adobe Walls. Eventually he homesteaded again in Cimarron County, Oklahoma, where he died in 1913. An excellent biography. Minor rub at foot of spine and corner, else a near fine, bright, tight, square copy. An unusually bright, attractive copy and the nicest copy we have handled. Rare,

        The Wise Virgins

Edward Arnold, London 1914 - This is a Very Good - Copy of this book in Publisher's original brown cloth with black title lettering to spine and upper cover and with vertical white lines running down the uppercover and also to spine of the book .The outer boards are showing some blotched stained marks to thwe upper cover and top edge of the lower cover. This is a very very scarce title indeed and is Leonard Woolf’s second novel which was published two years after the Author’s marriage to Virginia Stephen and begun to be written during their honeymoon. The autobiographical elements of the book are well known and it's acknowledged that Camilla Lawrence in The Wise Virgins is really a portrait of the Author's wife, Virginia Woolf. The book looks back to the early courting days after Leonard's return from Ceylon. This particular copy bears the name of Lytton Strachey (Bloomsbury Group) to the front endpaper. This title was acquired from a very impressive private collection of 20th Century Literature and Fiction with strict adherence paid in obtaining rare highlights in exellent condition. It appears to have been sent to Sotheby's Auction by James Strachey in 1965. The book has a firm binding with NO hinge weakness and there is NO leaning or rolling to spine. There is some spotting to the top edge of the book and also to the fore-edge of the book but nothing untoward for a title of this age.Great copy for the collector of this Very Rare title in original cloth. It's Woolf's second and last novel and almost unobtainable as it's circulation was restricted owing to his family's acute displeasure. The Bloomsbury Circle of which Stachey and Leonard Woolf were both invloved. They were very close and corresponded almost daily.Their early correspondence was dripping with their sexual drives and in particular with Strachey's boasting of his homosexual activities. They discussed issues of philiosophy, art and politics at length.Scarce title with this wonderful Lytton Strachey Association present and a genuine unique item.8vo 336pp plus 8 pages of ads at the rear of the book.First Edition 1st Impression Size: 8vo - over 5¾" - 7¾" Tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
