        The Complete Writings. Author's Edition.

New York: The Roycroft Shop, [1914] - 20 volumes, quarto. Bound by Roycroft in contemporary green half morocco, blue paper sides, spine lettered in gilt with raised bands, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, blue endpapers. With a typescript letter signed by the author loosely inserted. Some volumes with fading to the boards, spine and endpapers, joints tender, internally fine with bright plates. An excellent set. Number 968 of a limited edition of 1,000, signed on the limitation page by Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycroft artisan community, or by one of his Roycrofters whom he had trained to imitate his signature. Roycroft was a handicraft community founded in East Aurora, N.Y. about 1895 by Elbert Hubbard, influenced by the English Arts and Crafts movement. Hubbard started the Roycroft Press in order to publish a series of biographical sketches he had written called "Little Journeys." These form the first volume of this collected edition. Hubbard quickly became both popular and famous and collected a community of craftspeople around him in Aurora. Roycroft craftspeople were skilled metal smiths, leather smiths, and bookbinders. Today, items that were produced by the Roycrofters are highly sought after by collectors.

Archive of 45 Letters on Sales of Early Vintage Cars

Background: The Jackson Automotive Company was known for its extraordinarily well built cars; particularly, their luxury models built in 1914 with the Jackson Imperial at $1885.00 being their largest and most expensive and while sales were made all across the Eastern United States, the New York sales division was where the greatest number of sales took place. Earlier their focus was on racing cars and in 1908 the Jackson entry led at the Indianapolis 500 which was stopped at 235 miles due to poor track conditions and a deadly wreck; therefore, the organizers refused to declare a winner. After entering three race cars in the 1911 Indianapolis 500 they moved to emphasizing beautiful cars instead of the racing variety and at one time had 500 works producing 2,000 cars a year before the assembly line concept was introduced. E.A. Dorflinger with whom they worked closely and whose letters are in this collection was known for his craftsmanship and entrepreneurial life. Among the enclosed papers is the original selling agreement giving him exclusive rights in his community to sell five Jackson Automobiles. Here we learn about early dealer percentages (22.5%) and factory breaks on shipping. The 42 items of correspondence often show the problems of ordering parts in the pre-assembly line era. Precision was needed and supplying the needed part meant individual manufacturing once the initial small stock was exhausted. In the years they produced three models: The Olympic, the Majestic, and the Imperial. In a later letter the Sultanic models as touring cars were offered and were being advertised in magazines up until the beginning of World War I. It is obvious that Mr. Dorflinger was not selling cars but ordering the few remaining parts for repairs. In their series of letters beginning on May 1, 1915 they repeat they are expecting orders The next series of letters reflect that the company was dealing with someone who made promises but had no plan to fulfill them. This is a remarkable collection on the early days of vintage automobiles and the problems with both distribution and finding car companies for their small number of models. A very nice collection housed in a binder and each letter in protective plastic.

Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia

London, Macmillan, 1914. Octavo, xx, 516, [2] pages plus 128 plates (8 in colour) and a folding colour map. Gilt-decorated cloth, top edge gilt; foot of the spine very lightly bumped; endpapers replaced (but see our footnote); a fine copy with the very slightly chipped and sunned (and very rare) dustwrapper. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Wheewall Holden (1885-1947), the influential motor-body builder whose business became a household name. An excess of glue was applied to the bookplate when it was first mounted on the pastedown. The flyleaf adhered to it and was subsequently damaged when separation was attempted - a pity, but a trifling blemish in the overall scheme of things.

        [Photo Album]: Nurse in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania, 1914. Near Fine. Oblong quarto. Measuring 7" x 11". Black pebble grain leather over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 138 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring 2.5" x 4.5" to 4" x 5", with captions. Album is near fine with some rubbing and near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a nurse, Jane (last name not revealed), between 1907 and 1914. The album details her time at hospitals in Pennsylvania with her nursing friends as well as their leisure time. On the verso of the front board a poem is written that reads: "If you were feeling kind a' blue, and peace and sadness seemed to blend, what would you want to cheer you up? What would you want from your best friend? Would it be this?" The photos seem to have been taken by a head nurse with captions such as "my nurses" and show women in the starched white uniforms, hats, and capes worn by nurses of the time. She documented their "first cases" by taking pictures with other nurses and their patients, and of different shifts with a focus on the night nurses. One photo reads, "a sympathy group, we suffered together all night," which shows a group of night nurses in the early morning hours posing on the Pennsylvania Hospital grounds in front of a statue of William Penn. The nurses are shown throughout the album posing with doctors and patients. Along with the hospital photographs there are also photos of the women enjoying their time at the beach, a trip to St. Petersburg, Florida, and at farms of friends.A wonderful collection of snapshots depicting the lives of nurses in the early 1900s.

The Case Against the Little White Slaver Volume 1

Detroit: Henry Ford. 1914. Ford provides the foreword to this pamphlet published by him; it is addressed, "To My Friend, the American Boy," and begins with a story of being in discussion with Thomas Edison and John Burroughs about the evils of smoking cigarettes. Burroughs' name doesn't reappear, but Edison's portrait provides a frontispiece, along with a reproduction of a brief letter by him explaining the science behind the harm cigarettes cause. There follows a two-page rebuttal, so to speak, by the President of the American Tobacco Company, followed by a dozen pages of counterpoint apparently compiled by Ford's secretary and covering the effects of cigarettes on the brain, the heart, athleticism, efficiency, morality, and the soul, among other things. 22 pages, stapled pictorial wrappers. Small ink stamp on flyleaf, and what looks like a partial erasure of same on the front cover. Near fine. Over the next two years, Ford published three more volumes of this Case, but the original, Volume 1, is extremely scarce: OCLC locates only one copy. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine.

Blast: Review of the Great English Vortex. Edited by Wyndham Lewis.

London: John Lane; The Bodley Head, 1914 Book. Good. Wrappers. 1st Edition. [10] pp 11-160 [4] adverts. First edition of the scarce and short-lived literary magazine of the British Vorticist movement. Published in folio format, this desirable first issue is in fair condition only. The upper puce wrapper is present though detached from the book and chipped to the edges; the puce covering to the spine is absent and the lower wrapper also not present. Printed on soft paper, the title page is soiled with a horizontal tear about 10cm long and half a centimeter in depth across the word 'Blast' and extending in diminished form through the next leaf; the sewing is weak although the text block is intact. Happily the text has been collated and is complete though several of the half tone plates showing works of art by Wadsworth, Epstein and Brzeska are detached. Bradford Morrow has described the journal's publication thus: ' Its intentions were quite simple: to revive English art and literature, casting an electrifying light into murky corners of Georgian passivity. Lewis continued to send additional contributions to the printers during the spring, and the remarkable first issue of BLAST wasn't finally published until the end of June 1914. It caused an immediate sensation.' The opening pages contain the Vorticist manifesto; there follows a critique of Kandinsky, a patronising exhortation to suffragettes not to destroy works of art and after a review of a London exhibition of Expressionist woodcuts Wyndham Lewis couldn't resist a final dig at Marinetti.         Life and Letters of Dolly Madison

W.F. Roberts Company, Washington, D.C. 1914 - A handsome and substantial volume bound in pebbled black leather and stamped brightly in gold with gold border rules, decorations and a gilded silhouette of Dolly Madison on the front boards. With gilded title and silhouette also on the spine which is rubbed and frayed at the top and bottom ends. Corners worn. A solid volume nearly 3" thick, 7" wide x 9 3/4" tall with a total of 517 pages. Edge-rubbing along the rear boards and along the spine. Top edges gilded. Illustrated with 45 full-page plates, mostly photographs and some paintings. With a frontispiece of Dolly Madison by Stuart Gilbert. A wonderful resource of the life of this famous First Lady, wife of James Madison, noted for her social graces and for saving the Stuart Gilbert Portrait of George Washington when the British set fire to the White House in 1814. Dolley Payne Todd Madison(1768 – 1849) was the wife of James Madison, President of the United States from 1809 to 1817. She was noted for her social graces, which boosted her husband’s popularity as President. In this way, she did much to define the role of the President’s spouse, known only much later by the title First Lady—a function she had sometimes performed earlier for the widowed Thomas Jefferson.Dolley Madison worked with the architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe to furnish the White House, the first official residence built for the president of the United States. She sometimes served as widower Jefferson's hostess for official ceremonial functions. In the approach to the 1808 presidential election, with Thomas Jefferson ready to retire, the Democratic-Republican caucus nominated James Madison to succeed him. He was elected President, serving two terms from 1809 to 1817, and Dolley became the official First Lady. She was renowned for her social graces and hospitality, and contributed to her husband's popularity as president. She was the only First Lady given an honorary seat on the floor of Congress, and the first First Lady (and first American) to respond to a telegraph message. In 1812, Madison was re-elected. This was the year that the War of 1812 began with Great Britain. When the British set fire to it in 1814, she was credited with saving the classic portrait of George Washington. In widowhood, she often lived in poverty, partially relieved by the sale of her late husband’s papers. (Wikipedia) First Edition with matching dates of 1914 on the title and copyright pages.

East of the Sun West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1914. Signed limited edition of one of the most important and impressive books of the Golden Age of book illustration. One of 500 numbered copies, this is number 41. Quarto, original vellum, gilt titles and decoration to spine and front cover gilt, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers. Signed by the illustrator Kay Nielsen. With 25 tipped in color plates. In near fine condition. A very nice example. Laid is the original notice for the Leicester Galleries exhibition held in November and December of 1914, where the watercolors for this book were offered for sale. Kay Nielsen was a brilliant colorist and a highly decorative illustrator, able to introduce images that were sometimes strikingly fantastic... [The style] was uniquely his own, and his depictions of fairyland less sombre than Rackham's... By general consent, Nielsen's most spectacular and celebrated book is East of the Sun and West of the Moon, old tales from the North, translated from the Norwegian of Peter C. Asbjornsen and Jorgen Moe (devoted collectors of Scandinavian folk lore in the mid-19th century)... Nielsen's unique style and talent for combining the eerie and fantastic with beautiful decorative effect was at its peak with this set of illustrations. Drawing in pen and ink, enhanced by watercolour, with an immaculate technique, Nielsen's beautiful books were always embellished with his designs for endpapers, frieze-like patterns, initial letters, and other decorative motifs" (Dalby, 90).

There is no indication as to who published this paper, though I suspect it was by the Transactions of the American Hospital Association, vol. 16, for their Sixteenth Annual Conference, and printed on pp 483-492. This offprint version is mostly the same as the version that would be printed in the journal, except that the journal version has an organizational chart, and this paper does not. Overall, near-Very Good. In this paper, Gilbreth makes a very very wide statement on how U.S. hospitals could benefit from his motion and materials analysis. His assertion was sort of remarkable, made in the closing sentences of the paper: "Scientific Management will cause elimination not only of waste of materials, but of waste of human effort, which is, in the final analysis, the most pitiful waste of all. When your management becomes a science, there will result greater efficiency in you as individuals, and in the great work of the hospitals to which you all devote your lives."__+__ AND WITH: Frank B.
