Playing Cards Captain Amundsen Discoverer of the South Pole

London: Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards, 1912. Undetermined. very good. Original dark green gilt stamped box (7 X 9.5 X 2.5 cm.) 52 player cards with gilt edges. Minor wear but overall in great condition. The box has somewhat more wear to the edges. Cards have a red border. very good I have been trying to find a set of these cards for over 10 years and finally acquired a set 4 years ago in the blue. The Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards has been producing presentation packs and commemorative packs of cards since 1882. Each year they choose a different theme of which the Antarctic has been chosen twice. (see our other listing) the present example is extremely decorative and shows Amundsen and his crew at the South Pole. Each one of the cards shows the same scene with a normal image of the regular suit of cards on the obverse. The deck was issued in two colours both Blue and Red. The ace of spades shows the image of the Master of the Society, W.B.M. Bird as well. Complete decks along with the original box are very scarce even among card collectors. 1912

BULGARIA ANTIQUE POSTER MANIFEST FERDINAND I WAR DECLARATION AGAINST TURKEY 1912

BULGARIA ANTIQUE ORIGINAL POSTER, MANIFEST OF TSAR FERDINAND I WAR DECLARATION AGAINST TURKEY 1912 ON COATED PAPER SIZE: 113 x 81 cm. (44.4 x 31.8") CONDITION SEE PHOTOS: AGE AND USE WEAR TEARS TO EDGES, SMALL HOLES,BENDS Ferdinand I (26 February 1861 - 10 September 1948),[1] born Ferdinand Maximilian Karl Leopold Maria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was the ruler of Bulgaria from 1887 to 1918, first as knyaz (prince regnant, 1887-1908) and later as tsar (1908-1918). He was also an author, botanist, entomologist and philatelist. Like many other rulers before him, Ferdinand desired the creation of a "new Byzantium".[8] In 1912, Ferdinand joined the other Balkan states in an assault on the Ottoman Empire to free occupied territories. He saw this war as a new crusade declaring it, "a just, great and sacred struggle of the Cross against the Crescent."[9] Bulgaria contributed the most and also lost the greatest number of soldiers. The great powers insisted on the creation of an independent Albania.[3] Soon after, Bulgaria invaded its recent allies Serbia and Greece, before being attacked itself by Romania and the Ottoman Empire. Although Bulgaria was defeated, the 1913 Treaty of Bucharest granted the Kingdom some territorial gains. A tiny area of land giving access to the Aegean Sea was secured.[3

The Albee Alumni: A History of the Eleven Years of the Edward F. Albee Stock Co

Providence, Rhode Island: Edward F. Albee. Good. 1912. Soft Cover. 4to - 26.5 x 17 cm; 197 pp. After the Introduction by the noted dramatic authority, Briscoe, there is a brief introduction by the author (The Girl Behind the Pen) followed by a yearly report of each season and lots of photos of cast members. The book concludes with the "Casts of the Plays Given by the Albee Stock Company, Seasons 1901-1911". There was a new play each week, from April thru August, at Keith's Theatre, Providence, Rhode Island, so this list is quite extensive. A former owner of this book has written the plays that were presented from 1912 to 1920, in pencil, on back blank pages, the back cover and a laid-in sheet of paper. Albee and B. F. Keith were partners, owning and managing several theatres on the East coast. They strove to promote "polite" vaudeville, forbidding crude remarks and risque costumes, even tried to prohibit rudeness from the audience. In 1906 they established the United Booking Office, in the 1920's they merged with a western chain of theatres to become the KAO (Keith-Albee-Orpheum) circuit, and 1928 found them selling a large amount of their stock to Joseph P. Kennedy's Radio Corporation of America (RCA), establishing the RKO (Radio-Keith-Orpheum). This book concerns the summer stock program Albee started in 1901, rather than closing the theatre for the summer as in past years. Plays were performed each week from broad farce to heavy tragedy and there was a slogan among the actors to the effect "An Albee engagement is the 'open sesame' to Broadway". (This according to Briscoe's introduction). The brown card stock cover with darker brown design and lettering is detached from the text, quite chipped on the yapped edges and missing a part of the spine section; the main body of the front cover is intact with some soiling, the back cover piece has a water stain and the penciled listing of plays. The body of the text is in good shape with some minor damage to a few page edges and two back pages which have been water stained; there are a few bits of marginalia in pencil besides the aforementioned play listing and some very minor soiling. Binding is flat stapled. .

Price List of Mounted Specimens for Museums [caption title]

London: Rowland Ward, 1912. Price list. Four different examples of this publication from Rowland Ward [two with the title above, one from 1904 with the caption title "Stuffed Animals: Museum Specimens (All Mounted in Standing Positions)," and one from 1912 with the caption title "Price List of Mounted Specimens for Museums"]. 4to. The lists vary from three to ten pages [rectos only], two include a full page illustration of a stuffed elephant (one torn), three include a Rowland Ward decorated cover sheet. Animals from Africa predominate, but there are also specimens from India, Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Australia; prices seem to top out at $500 for an African elephant (typically an entry would include common name of the animal, its genus and species, its sex, country of origin, and price). Apparently none of these lists are located on OCLC. Folded for mailing, one with a receipt stamp, two with ink docketing. Very good lot of scarce Rowland Ward ephemera. Brad-bound in an upper corner. Grand Tour Photograph Albums of Europe

1912. Very Good. Hardcover. Five albums containing over 200 original silver gelatin photographs. Brown cloth albums in good condition with some rubbing and spine tears, and containing numbered spine labels. Hinges weak. Each album contains 12 leaves with photos mounted two to a page within windows. The photographs are in very good to fine condition and of generally very good quality. Many are labeled with locations. The set is from an American family doing the Grand Tour of Europe, visiting Holland, Germany, Italy, France, England, Switzerland, and Austria. From the automobiles and prewar scenery the date is around 1912. The side trips seem to have been by carriage, and many shots in the first album are of steamship travel to Liverpool. The photos convey a very romantic vacation view of what once was, from scenic shots of the Matterhorn's alpine glaciers to all the beautiful cities that were later bombed. People shots include women hiking in long skirts in the mountains, children petting animals at a zoo, and ship passengers. ; B&W Photographs; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall .

Kyoto. Yamada Naosaburo. 明治45. [1912]. Complete 15 volume set. Profuse woodblock illustrations by Hokusai throughout on folded leaves. Japanese 4 hole stab binding, string ties on one volume loosening but still sound, lower and occasional upper edges of covers little damp stained, though staining is only really visible on the pastedowns and has not affected the leaves of the volumes themselves. The attractive black, grey and pale pink images of a huge range of aspects of life are clean. Original case faded and worn, insect damage to paper lining on the inside of the case, a little damage to the title label on the upper flap. A good set of a classic work. The thirteen volumes which make up this classic work are a collection of sketches covering a wide variety of subjects including everyday life in Edo Japan, supernatural beings, landscapes and a range of natural history subjects. The sketches are not connected with each other but are a selection of thousands of images by Hokusai. In recent years art historians have come to believe that the sketches in the final volume are not Hokusai's own work but rather a collection of works of other artists but there is no doubt that the first twelve volumes are the work of Hokusai."It is probably true to say that Hokusai's reputation in the West was made by this endlessly inventive series of picture-books, thirteen volumes of which were published during his lifetime." (Jack Hillier and Lawrence Smith - Japanese Prints 300 Years of Albums and Books).A good complete set of this classic work. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 155584).

        PHOTOGRAPH ***Signed***

Los Angeles, California - Charming 8" X 10" photographic image of Walt Disney's animated film "Snow Whit and the Seven Dwarfs" personally inscribed by Ollie Johnston. The photo is inscribed" To Mike, Candy, Laura and Sarah with best wishes - Ollie Johnston" in black ink. Animator Ollie Johnston infused an unusual level of warmth and heartfelt emotion into his Disney characters. As lifelong friend and fellow animator Frank Thomas recalled, "Ollie was the only one of the Studio animators who was sensitive to character relationships and how they affected story," explained Frank -- "Back then cartoon characters seldom touched unless they hit each other. But one day Ollie said, 'You know, the act of two people holding hands communicates in a powerful way.' And he was right. His warmth made a difference in so many of our characters." Indeed, Ollie animated such memorable friendships as that of Baloo and Mowgli in "The Jungle Book" and the sycophantic relationship shared by Sir Hiss and Prince John in "Robin Hood." And he valued his own relationship with the characters he animated, including Thumper in "Bambi," Mr. Smee in "Peter Pan" and the trio of fanciful fairies in "Sleeping Beauty." Ollie says, "They were all good friends, whom I remember fondly." Born in Palo Alto, California, on October 31, 1912, Ollie attended grammar school on the campus of Stanford University, where his father served as professor of romance languages. After graduating from Palo Alto High School, he returned to Stanford and spent his last year of study at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. On January 21, 1935, Ollie joined The Walt Disney Studios as an apprentice animator, working on such early Disney shorts as "Mickey's Garden" and "The Tortoise and the Hare," which won an Academy Award for Best Cartoon. He went on to work as animator and directing animator on more than 24 feature films including, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Fantasia," "Song of the South," "Cinderella," "Alice in Wonderland," "Lady and the Tramp," and "Sleeping Beauty," among others. An avid train enthusiast, in his spare time, Ollie created a backyard railroad at his home and was instrumental in helping stir Walt Disney's own personal interest in trains. After 43 years with the Studio, Ollie retired in 1978. He went on to co-author four books with Frank Thomas beginning with the definitive "Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life," followed by "Too Funny For Words," "Walt Disney's Bambi: The Story and the Film," and "The Disney Villain." The Stage in the Twentieth Century: Third Volume

New York: Broadway Publishing Co.. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [beautiful copy of the book itself, with firm binding, strong gilt lettering on front cover and spine, just minimal wear to the extremities; the jacket, rarely seen on this book, has some chipping, mostly at or near the corners, some moderate soiling and fading, and a few old internal tape-marks from long-ago repairs of several short closed tears]. (B&W photographic plates) A "profusely illustrated" survey of the theatrical world of the day, discussing "tendencies, developments and possibilities of the theatre" -- with "theatre" in this case defined quite broadly, to include not just the legitimate stage but also vaudeville, opera, movies and even recorded sound. As the author explained in an introductory note, "science and invention have made rapid strides in their encroachment on the realm of Thespis, and the part now being played by the phonograph, the player piano, and the various phases of development of the irresistible moving picture in contributing to the entertainment of the public, is too important to be ignored in a work of this character." There are mentions of the impact of filmed entertainment sprinkled throughout the text, and all of Chapter VII is given over to a discussion of the exploits and successes of many of the leading figures of the early film industry, which was just then poised to begin the expansion from one- and two-reelers to feature films. (Just two years later, in fact, Grau would come out with "The Theatre of Science," a similarly hefty tome devoted exclusively to the movies.) Most of the photographs in this volume are portraits of prominent individuals, mostly off-stage figures such as producers, managers, playwrights, etc., although a number of performers are also pictured. Anticipating a currently-popular feature of the annual Academy Awards telecast, there's even an "In Memoriam" section containing "tributes to celebrities who have passed on." .

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

Das Zweite Internationale Schachturnier in Karlsbad 1911

Potsdam: A Stein's Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1912 2 volumes in 1: 192 pages with frontispiece, plates, diagrams and tables; 192 pages with frontispiece, diagrams and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in half blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5302) First edition.Carlsbad 1911 has emerged as one of the truly memorable tournaments of chess history. It was a strong, single round-robin duel to the death which required 25 rounds and five weeks to complete. A total of 325 games was played. An indication of Carlsbad's popularity as an international chess mecca is that the organizing committee headed by Victor Tietz received more than 40 applications to play. A number of well known masters, however, were absent from the fray - among them Lasker, Tarrasch, Marcoczy, Capablanca, Bernstein and Janowski. By the end of the seventh round Schlechter led Teichmann by two full points - followed closely by Rubinstein, Suchting, Marshall, Jaffe and Burn, all bunched together with 4 1/2. The throng of onlookers were hardly prepared for the surprises of the eighth and ninth rounds. The streaking Schlechter suddenly stumbled - losing a minor-piece ending to the newcomer Rotlevi. A second successive loss followed at the hands Duras. Schlechter regained his winning stride the following round with a spectacular sacrificial victory over Leonhardt. At the end of 13 rounds he still led the closely pursuing Teichmann by half a point, 10 to 9 1/2. Schlechter's draw against Vidmar in the next round, coupled with Teichmann's win over Tartakower, deadlocked the pair at 10 1/2 each. The issued was decided in the 18th round when the two front-runners clashed. Teichmann devised a handsome sacrificial victory to augment a lead he was never to relinquish. (Goldman:Schlechter! Caissa Editions)Condition:Extremities rubbed, corners bumped and rubbed through, back head hing cracked, shelf wear, else a good to very good copy of a scarce tournament book.

        The Life of Swinburne.

London: Privately printed at the Chiswick Press,, 1912. With a letter on Swinburne at Eton by Lord Redesdale. Octavo. Original blue boards, title label to spine. With the unprinted dust jacket. Tissue guard laid in at title page. A fine copy, with the dust jacket chipped and torn around the edges, and with a few small holes to rear panel. First edition, copy 3 of only 50 copies printed, presentation copy inscribed "W. F. Prideaux from E. G. August 1912", with the unprinted dust jacket also numbered 3 in pencil. This is the first appearance of the first biography of the poet Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) penned by fellow-poet and friend Sir Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928), who would go on to edit Swinburne's works and letters. The biography was written for inclusion in the Dictionary of National Biography, but this tiny privately printed edition constitutes its rare first appearance. The last time a copy appeared at auction was in 1994 - we can moreover trace no auction record mentioning the dust jacket. The recipient of this presentation copy was Colonel William Francis Prideaux (1840-1914), Companion of the Star of India, who spent his life in military and political service in India and the Middle East, also pursuing archaeological interests and donating his collection to the British Museum. It was in his role as bibliographer that he most likely became acquainted with the great literary impressario Gosse, producing bibliographies of Edward Fitzgerald, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Prideaux has in turn inscribed the book, only two months later, to poet Edward Henry Blakeney (1869-1955), who was Assistant Master at Winchester College 1918-30, and Lecturer in English Literature at Southampton University 1929-31. He was a friend of A. E. Housman, produced several volumes of poetry and published editions and translations of many classical Latin and Greek texts, as well as editions of Milton.
