"The peculiar secret of Rackham's success in seizing upon the essence of the human and portraying it in animal form, which is after all the basic device of the morality, is unwittingly touched upon in Chesterton's delightful introduction to the 1912 edition of Aesop's Fables: "There can be no good fable with human beings in it. There can be no good fairy tale without them". Rackham's genius is such that it bridges the two, and carries the didactic fable into the realm of fairy story, and lends to the imaginative world of fairies a tangible and convincing reality" (Fred Gettings, Arthur Rackham, 1976, pp. 83-84).

        Die diluviale Vorzeit Deutschlands.

Stuttgart, E. Schweizerbart (Nägele und Dr. Sproesser), 1912. Very large 4to (35.5 x 30.0 cm). xiii, 283 pp.; 47 engraved or heliogravure plates with explanatory text leaves, loose in rear pocket. Original quarte vellum over cloth boards. Gilt title on front board; gilt-lettered morocco label on the spine.l A very rare, very well-illustrated work on the Pleistocene and Holocene man and animals, including fine photographic plates of Neanderthal skulls and bones; and human artifacts, by the great German archeologist Robert Rudolf Schmidt (1882-1950): “The epic work‚ Die diluviale Vorzeit Deutschlands‘ (The diluvial prehistory of Germany) by Robert Rudolf Schmidt, published in 1912, is the first major book on Paleolithic research in Germany. At the same time, it is an outstanding cornerstone of international Paleolithic research. The book presents an ingenious synthesis of primary data from Schmidt's own fieldwork and the state of research of his time. Special emphasis is given to Schmidt's fieldwork in the Swabian Jura in 1906, especially at Sirgenstein Cave, and to his field campaigns between 1907 and 1908 at the Ofnet Caves in the Bavarian part of Swabia. Even 100 years after its publication, the key aspects of Schmidt's cultural stratigraphic sequence remain valid today. He also succeeded at contextualizing his research from southwestern Germany within a broader European setting and established many explicit correlations between the well-studied French and German records of human biological and cultural Evolution. Schmidt's research is outstandingly modern in that it consciously addressed archaeological questions within the context of ecological and paleoanthropological research and followed a distinctive interdisciplinary approach that is reflected today 64 in the fact that the field of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology remains part of the University of Tübingen's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The presence of two chapters from the natural sciences within the book, one on geological and faunal analyses by E. Koken and one on anthropological remains by A. Schliz, documents this approach. Until today, no comparable oeuvre synthesizing the state of knowledge of the German Paleolithic within its European setting has been published. R. R. Schmidt must be regarded as one of the leading international pioneers of Paleolithic archaeology and Quaternary research as well as the founder of academic prehistory at the University of Tübingen with its emphasis on interdisciplinary research, curation of collections, and museum exhibits that demonstrate the importance of human evolution and Stone Age archaeology for the general public” (100 Jahre Robert Rudolf Schmidts ‚Die diluviale Vorzeit Deutschlands‘ Bolus & Conard, 1912). The work is divided in three parts: I. Archäologischer Teil von R. R. Schmidt. Die diluvialen Kulturen Deatschlands; II. Geologischer Teil von Ernst Koken. Die Geologie und Tierwelt der paläolithischen Kulturstätten Deutschlands; III. Anthropologischer Teil von A. Schliz. Die diluvialen Menschenreste Deutschlands. Ernst Hermann Friedrich Koken (1860-1912) was one of the foremost German palaeontologists. Alfred Schliz (1849-1915) was a German medical doctor, anthropologist and archeologist. Nice pictorial bookplate on the front pastedown, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Rothbard, in The New Palgrave). Ludwig von Mises (1881–1973) was a notable economist and a major influence on the modern libertarian movement. Wright's interest in Japanese art dates from the large Japanese exhibit at the World's Columbian Exposition, 1893. It was for this exhibition that Wright assisted Sullivan on the Transportation Building. He collected Japanese prints extensively, and sold them when in financial difficulties. Wright's first book written entirely on his own. A superb, and most attractive Association Copy. . Signed Association Copy. Original Boards. Very Good Plus.. Octavo.

JAHRTAUSENDWENDE. IN TAUSEND UND EINEM JAHR. EIN BIOSOPHISCHER ERZIEHUNGSROMAN AUF ERPOLITISCHER. GRUNDLAGE

Dresden und Leipzig: E. Piersons Verlag, 1912.. Octavo, pp. [i-ii] iii-xi [xii] [1-2] 3-173 [174: blank] [175-176: ads], inserted extra title leaf with color illustration, original white cloth, front and spine panel stamped in gold, all edges gilt, floral patterned endpapers. First edition. A tale of the future in which the United States, Japan, South America and other nations form an economic partnership and exclude Europe. Germany, Scandinavia, The Netherlands and the Flemish provinces form their own economic bloc. The United States and its allies cut off trade with Europe. A highly destructive war between America, its partners and the Europeans follows. The Pan-German people mix and through a selection process (eugenics) create a new breed of humans. The survivors, the new breed, become godlike in the end, "light people" who can command the forces of nature. Antidemocratic and anti-socialist propaganda is interspersed throughout. Unlike many of his nationalistic contemporaries, Driesmans believed the "Jewish Problem" could be solved by "race mixing." According to Sapra, this is "in every way a remarkable novel." Lexikon 1, pp. 70-1. Bloch (2002) 804. Not in Nagl. A clean, nearly fine copy. KVK reports 6 copies. OCLC reports 2 copies. Rare. (#148109)

K'ossu embroidered 9th rank civil servant badge featuring paradise flycatcher

China, Ming & Qing Dynasties, c. 1391-1912. 17" x 17". "At center, a blue-capped paradise flycatcher perches on two lanky legs, his outer tail feathers are pink graduating to red and his inner feathers are dotted with green. At top, five pink palette bats fly amongst stylized blue and teal clouds and a red sun disc symbolizing the Emperor. At the bottom are highly abstracted waves. Red peonies and cherry blossoms scattered throughout feature tightly balled Peking knot stamen. Light expected surface wear including isolated stain to bird's chest. Embroidery measures 11" x 10.5" (visible), while framed to 17"" x 17"". Matted and framed behind glass, Very Fine condition. This embroidered Mandarin square, or rank badge, features back stitch and Peking knot or "forbidden stitch" techniques. Rank badges were used to identify civil and military officials of the Ming Dynasty after 1391 and until the collapse of the Qing Dynasty in 1911. The badge represented the rank of the official, but was also a mark of prestige as it meant the wearer had passed rigorous state-sponsored examinations where the success rate was typically about 1%. Its animal attribute indicates that this embroidery was likely a 9th rank badge once ornamenting the chest or back of a red, blue, or black robe. Civil servant badges had nine rankings, all represented by birds, while military badges, also with nine rankings, were represented by real and mythological animals. From the position of the red sun disc within this badge, we know that it was worn by a man (and not by his wife, whose complimentary badge would have featured a sun on the right side). In addition, it is probable that the wearer of this badge was wealthy, since training for examinations was costly. Late 19th century Western diplomats and missionaries exported many of the antique rank badges from China, Vietnam, and Korea that circulate in markets today. "

Das Zweite Internationale Schachturnier in Karlsbad 1911

A Stein's Verlagsbuchhandlung, Potsdam 1912 - 2 volumes in 1: 192 pages with frontispiece, plates, diagrams and tables; 192 pages with frontispiece, diagrams and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in half blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5302) First edition. Carlsbad 1911 has emerged as one of the truly memorable tournaments of chess history. It was a strong, single round-robin duel to the death which required 25 rounds and five weeks to complete. A total of 325 games was played. An indication of Carlsbad's popularity as an international chess mecca is that the organizing committee headed by Victor Tietz received more than 40 applications to play. A number of well known masters, however, were absent from the fray - among them Lasker, Tarrasch, Marcoczy, Capablanca, Bernstein and Janowski. By the end of the seventh round Schlechter led Teichmann by two full points - followed closely by Rubinstein, Suchting, Marshall, Jaffe and Burn, all bunched together with 4 1/2. The throng of onlookers were hardly prepared for the surprises of the eighth and ninth rounds. The streaking Schlechter suddenly stumbled - losing a minor-piece ending to the newcomer Rotlevi. A second successive loss followed at the hands Duras. Schlechter regained his winning stride the following round with a spectacular sacrificial victory over Leonhardt. At the end of 13 rounds he still led the closely pursuing Teichmann by half a point, 10 to 9 1/2. Schlechter's draw against Vidmar in the next round, coupled with Teichmann's win over Tartakower, deadlocked the pair at 10 1/2 each. The issued was decided in the 18th round when the two front-runners clashed. Teichmann devised a handsome sacrificial victory to augment a lead he was never to relinquish. (Goldman:Schlechter! Caissa Editions) Condition: Extremities rubbed, corners bumped and rubbed through, back head hing cracked, shelf wear, else a good to very good copy of a scarce tournament book.         The Seattle Post-Intelligencer... Largest Ship Afloat Strikes Iceberg and is reported Sinking. April 15, 1912.

Seattle: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 1912. Newspaper, folio sheets (16 1/2 x 21), 12 of 14 pages, illustrated, Vol. LXI., No. 153. Paper is browned and brittle, some chips at the edges and margins, probably removed, small label on first page, missing pages nine and ten, but article on the Titanic is complete and on the first page. This is one of the earlier newspaper accounts of the sinking of the Titanic. The article reports that the ship has struck an iceberg, and is reported sinking. It also reports that the women are being put off in lifeboats, and that the ship is 500 miles off Cape Race at 2 A.M. The report captures the drama of that moment by mentioning that signals from the ship stopped abruptly at 12:27 A.M., which was when the ship went down. Interestingly, this article also mentions the close call the Titanic had when it left Southampton earlier in that week and almost collided with the New York, which somehow got loose from its moorings as the Titanic departed.

IN THE BOSOM OF THE COMANCHES. A THRILLING TALE OF SAVAGE INDIAN LIFE, MASSACRE AND CAPTIVITY TRUTHFULLY TOLD BY A SURVIVING CAPTIVE. TEXAS BORDERLAND PERILS AND SCENES DEPICTED. THE CLOSING DAYS OF THE TRYING INDIAN STRUGGLES UPON THE FRONTIERS OF TEXAS

      T. A. Babb, [1912]., Amarillo - First edition and not to be confused with the 1923 Dallas edition. 12mo. Red cloth, gold stamping on front cover and spine, 145 pp., introduction, frontispiece, illustrated, plates, portraits. In Texas 1865, Babb and his sister were taken captive by the Comanches. Their mother was killed during the raid, and he eventually became a warrior of the tribe. After sometime as a Comanche warrior he was returned to his father. Babb's captivity narrative remains a classic because he was able to directly observe details of Comanche life and record much of it in an objective way. He continued to visit and correspond with tribal members long after his return to white society. There are several photographs of noted Indian chiefs and warriors, information on the Texas Rangers, and much on Quanah Parker. Also much on cowboying, and much valuable knowledge on pioneer women in Texas. The first edition of this title was originally published in 1912, and is considered to be rare today. Not in Adam's Herd, Graff and Ayer, and most references cite the 1923 edition. Lightly sunned on the spine, else a fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
