Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Hubin (1994), p. 308. Cloth lightly worn at spine ends and corner tips, spine lettering just a bit dull, top edge of pages dusty, lacks the front free endpaper, a very good copy. A very scarce book. (#131808)

        THE SNAKE

London: John Lane The Bodley Head. New York: John Lane Company, 1912.. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-303 [304], original green pictorial cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, all edges trimmed. First edition, U.S. issue. Weird thriller set in India at the time of the Mutiny; Anglo-Indian Kali worshipper can transfer soul into giant cobra, wreaks havoc. "A romantic triangle furnishes the core of the plot. Diana is the 'other woman', a wild and willful redhead who has been neglected by an invalid mother and preoccupied father and raised by an indulgent native nanny. When her passion for the hero is unrequited she turns to the nanny for help. She, in turn, enlists the help of a local yogi who uses the girl as an instrument for revenge on the girl's family. To do this, he initiates her into the cult of Kali, first making her offer human flesh to a Nameless Thing, then showing her how to migrate her soul into the body of a giant cobra that subsequently terrorizes the village, eventually killing Diana's father and mother. Even after the girl and the snake are both killed, her soul remains potent in the embalmed snake, able to jump into the body of any living woman who comes near it. 'Vampire-like it would feed and gain strength at the expense of its victim, and thus continue in its cycle of evil and destruction.' The snake must be burnt and its ashes scattered to remove danger from the village. Set in mid-Victorian Anglo-India around the time of the Mutiny, this reads as if it were written then as well: a serving of standard commercial fiction spiced with a curry of Indian magic and murder, filled with novelistic clichés of the time but with just enough red meat for the fantasy connoisseur to prevent it from being entirely irrelevant. Indeed, if more of the book were written like chapter six, it would be a considerable work." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural fiction 1328. Bleiler (1978), p. 160. Reginald 11843. Private owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down. Light rubbing to spine ends, one pair of leaves roughly opened, 70-mm horizontal tear in another leaf, faint mark on spine, still a very good, bright copy. (#148802)

        The Brothers Karamazov

Macmillan, 1912 Translated into English by Constance Garnett, the first book in her series The Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky. ****** First American edition - only one copy to appear at auction in 100 years(Swann, May 2017 - $10,000) and that one looked to be in worse condition. Printed from the sheets of the English edition published the same year. That English edition has appeared twice at auction in the last 100 years - one of which was heavily repaired. I've also seen two copies in private hands, miraculously both owned by a collector friend of mine - Hey David! Mysteriously, these English translations are extremely difficult to come by - particularly in any condition approaching collectability standards. ****** Publisher's blue-grey cloth, spine gilt-titled, top edge gilt retained albeit a bit dusty, minor scattered rubbing, minor wear to spine ends and corners, spine lightly faded, a few old owner notes in the text and owner signature dated 1928, otherwise internally quite clean. All faults notwithstanding, it's a sound unrepaired near fine copy and a quasi-miraculous survival in this condition. ****** Brothers Karamazov is a real literary landmark that had a heavy influence on writers and thinkers of all stripes. This is a must own title spanning various fields of collecting from literature to philosophy or simply for a great highspot collection.

        The South Pole.

London: John Murray,, 1912. An Account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition in the "Fram," 1910-1912. Translated from the Norwegian by A. G. Chater. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark red cloth, gilt titles and enamelled Norwegian flags to spines and within simple red frame to front boards, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Photogravure frontispiece to each volume, 92 similar plates (several containing multiple images), 2 plates of manuscript facsimile, 6 maps and charts of which 3 folding, 16 charts and tables to the text. Spines slightly faded, minor nicks to the ends, enamelled flags lightly rubbed, very light wear to tips, a few trivial marks to sides, free endpapers browned, light foxing front and back, and very occasionally to text, vol. 1 frontispiece a little frayed along the edges, faint undulation to upper outer corner of the text-block. A very good set: the enamelled flags to the front boards are particularly bright. First edition in English, first impression, of Amundsen's account of his "legendary dash to the Pole, in which he gained priority over Robert Falcon Scott's British Expedition by a month … His success over Scott was due to highly disciplined dogsled teams, more accomplished skiers, a shorter distance to the Pole, better clothing and equipment, well-planned supply depots en route, including more nutritious food with plenty of B vitamins, fortunate weather, and a modicum of luck … Amundsen and four of his colleagues reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911, carefully plotted their location, left messages for Scott and King Haakon VII, and then returned to their Framhein base on January 25, 1912, only nine days after the disheartened Scott party reached the Pole" (Books on Ice). "To their credit, John Murray produced a two volume set of real quality, incorporating the Norwegian flag, despite realising that British disappointment at being beaten to the Pole would ensure that it was not a publishing success in the United Kingdom. Altogether, there are 63 full-page photographic reproductions in this version (as opposed to 53 in the original publication)" (Taurus). News of Scott's death came three months after publication. Provenance: contemporary gift inscription, "Charles Vernon Somers Cocks, from his father, Christmas 1912", to the front free endpaper of each volume. Father (Thomas Somers Vernon Cocks, known as Vernon 1850-1932) and son (1895-1977) were members of the banking branch of the Somers-Cocks family "more commonly associated with Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire" (Miller, "Uplands, Four Ashes Road, High Wycombe HP15 6LB", p. 6, online). Both served as directors of the family bank, Cocks, Biddulph, & Co, which was founded in 1765 and was eventually bought out by Barclays in 1969. In the Great War Charles (1895-1977) was a lieutenant in the Black Watch.

IN THE BOSOM OF THE COMANCHES. A THRILLING TALE OF SAVAGE INDIAN LIFE, MASSACRE AND CAPTIVITY TRUTHFULLY TOLD BY A SURVIVING CAPTIVE. TEXAS BORDERLAND PERILS AND SCENES DEPICTED. THE CLOSING DAYS OF THE TRYING INDIAN STRUGGLES UPON THE FRONTIERS OF TEXAS

Amarillo: T. A. Babb, [1912]., 1912. First edition. First edition and not to be confused with the 1923 Dallas edition. 12mo. Red cloth, gold stamping on front cover and spine, 145 pp., introduction, frontispiece, illustrated, plates, portraits. In Texas 1865, Babb and his sister were taken captive by the Comanches. Their mother was killed during the raid, and he eventually became a warrior of the tribe. After sometime as a Comanche warrior he was returned to his father. Babb's captivity narrative remains a classic because he was able to directly observe details of Comanche life and record much of it in an objective way. He continued to visit and correspond with tribal members long after his return to white society. There are several photographs of noted Indian chiefs and warriors, information on the Texas Rangers, and much on Quanah Parker. Also much on cowboying, and much valuable knowledge on pioneer women in Texas. The first edition of this title was originally published in 1912, and is considered to be rare today. Not in Adam's Herd, Graff and Ayer, and most references cite the 1923 edition. Lightly sunned on the spine, else a fine copy.

The South Pole. An Account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition in the "Fram," 1910-1912. Translated from the Norwegian by A. G. Chater.

London: John Murray, 1912 - 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark red cloth, gilt titles and enamelled Norwegian flags to spines and within simple red frame to front boards, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Photogravure frontispiece to each volume, 92 similar plates (several containing multiple images), 2 plates of manuscript facsimile, 6 maps and charts of which 3 folding, 16 charts and tables to the text. First edition in English, first impression, of Amundsen's account of his "legendary dash to the Pole, in which he gained priority over Robert Falcon Scott's British Expedition by a month His success over Scott was due to highly disciplined dogsled teams, more accomplished skiers, a shorter distance to the Pole, better clothing and equipment, well-planned supply depots en route, including more nutritious food with plenty of B vitamins, fortunate weather, and a modicum of luck Amundsen and four of his colleagues reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911, carefully plotted their location, left messages for Scott and King Haakon VII, and then returned to their Framhein base on January 25, 1912, only nine days after the disheartened Scott party reached the Pole" (Books on Ice). Books on Ice 7.1; Howgego IV A13; Rosove 9.A1; Spence 16; Taurus 71.

The Stage in the Twentieth Century: Third Volume

New York: Broadway Publishing Co.. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [beautiful copy of the book itself, with firm binding, strong gilt lettering on front cover and spine, just minimal wear to the extremities; the jacket, rarely seen on this book, has some chipping, mostly at or near the corners, some moderate soiling and fading, and a few old internal tape-marks from long-ago repairs of several short closed tears]. (B&W photographic plates) A "profusely illustrated" survey of the theatrical world of the day, discussing "tendencies, developments and possibilities of the theatre" -- with "theatre" in this case defined quite broadly, to include not just the legitimate stage but also vaudeville, opera, movies and even recorded sound. As the author explained in an introductory note, "science and invention have made rapid strides in their encroachment on the realm of Thespis, and the part now being played by the phonograph, the player piano, and the various phases of development of the irresistible moving picture in contributing to the entertainment of the public, is too important to be ignored in a work of this character." There are mentions of the impact of filmed entertainment sprinkled throughout the text, and all of Chapter VII is given over to a discussion of the exploits and successes of many of the leading figures of the early film industry, which was just then poised to begin the expansion from one- and two-reelers to feature films. (Just two years later, in fact, Grau would come out with "The Theatre of Science," a similarly hefty tome devoted exclusively to the movies.) Most of the photographs in this volume are portraits of prominent individuals, mostly off-stage figures such as producers, managers, playwrights, etc., although a number of performers are also pictured. Anticipating a currently-popular feature of the annual Academy Awards telecast, there's even an "In Memoriam" section containing "tributes to celebrities who have passed on." .

Chelsea. S.W. Dear Mr Salisbury I am leaving tomorrow morning for 4 months absence abroad so that I can do nothing until next Winter about your candidature to the Academy - I will attend to it then unless you wish to be put down sooner by some one who is still here - [Side 2] The photo of Boldini's portra[it] of Whistler hangs in the small [.] at my studio 12, the Avenue, Fulham Road - you could get [in] by arranging with E. Powell, the old caretaker, who lives at 10 Onslow Dwellings, Pond Place, Fulham[.] Show him this - I had a letter th[e] other day from the Town Clerk of t[he] Chelsea Town Hall, enquiring on beha[lf] of a Committee how your panel and the others were progressing. Yrs sincerely John S. Sargent For several years now Sargent had spent August and the autumn in Switzerland (accompanied by his sisters Emily and Violet, with the latter's children), Italy (especially Venice) and Spain, sketching and painting landscapes and all sorts of details, rather than portraiture. Since 1895 he had leased two studios in the Fulham Road for his larger pieces and murals, in particular those for the Boston Public Library. Frank Salisbury was also an accomplished portraitist, painting 5 U.S. Presidents and 5 Prime Ministers, but is best remembered for his paintings of great historical occasions, such as the Burial of the Unknown Warrior and the Coronation of 1937. Though he received many honours, he was never made a member of the Royal Academy. He had been one of the successful artists competing to paint The Great Artists of Chelsea, open to residents, for the Large Hall of Chelsea Town Hall. See The Times, 9th December 1911, for the competition, "the scheme of decoration . to be . under the supervision of Mr. Sargent, Mr. Steer, and Mr. Rickards". Giovanni Boldini, 1842-1931, Italian but settled in Paris, had painted Sargent, his style being not dissimilar but more flowing. His 'homage' portrait of Whistler, now at Brooklyn, shows the artist in a striking but informal pose.

JUDAICA RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE RACHEL KOGAN OIL PAINTING OHTA LENINGRAD SIGNED 1950

JUDAICA RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE RACHEL KOGAN, RUSSIAN-ISRAELI PAINTER OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING "OHTA LENINGRAD" SIGNED IN RUSSIAN ON FRONT SIDE AND ON REVERSE SIDE WITH NAME OF PAINTING DIMENSIONS: 61 x 51 cm. (24 x 20") 5 DENTS TO CANVAS TO RIGHT SIDE OF PAINTING FROM TOP TO BOTTOM - SEE PHOTOS Rachel Kogan was born in 1912 in Evpatoriya (Ukraine) to Jewish parents. She spent her childhood in Odessa, and studied at the Trade-Union Art School. In 1930 she entered the Odessa Art Institute and studied there for one year In 1931 the Kogan family moved to Leningrad and Rachel was transferred to the All -Russian Academy of Arts (the former St. Petersburg Imperial Arts Academy) to study painting. Her professors included Kordovsky, Shuchaev and Radlov. She received professional advice and support from Osmarkin and Petrov-Vodkin. In 1937 Rachel graduated from the Academy. In 1938 she was accepted to the Leningrad Department of the Artist's Union of the USSR and took part in all- Russian and Leningrad exhibitions. 1941-1944: During the war and the siege on Leningrad, Kogan was evacuated with her children to Siberia. She worked as an artist and decorated sets of children's plays as well as painted and created many compositions. In 1944 Kogan returned back to Leningrad and signed many contracts with the Artist Union as well as the Art Fund of the USSR. Her works survived the siege and the Nazi bombings, as they were stored in the basements of the Academy. 1949-1972: Kogan taught painting and was a Professor of Drawing at the Leningrad Institute of Monumental and Decorative Art which was named after Muchina. For much of her life she devoted herself to painting. Her works are in many USSR company collections and institutions all over Russia, such as the Sergei Kirov steel factory. In 1973 Kogan immigrated to Israel. Her works have been exhibited at: 1. The National, Republic and Leningrad exhibitions of the USSR Union of Artists (1938, 73, 75, 76 &78). 2. The Tel-Aviv Museum of Art (Russian Avant-Garde Revaluation 11.1988) 3. The Jerusalem Museum of ART (Propaganda and Vision- Soviet and Israeli Art 1930-1955 in 1997) 4. The Stadtische Kunsthalle Dusseldorf which introduced the international exhibition of European Art in the 30's (The "European conflict in the memory of the early Avant-Garde"10-12 1987). 5. The Bochum Museum (Avant-Garde Art in 1988) 6. Her works are part of many private collections all over the globe, including the Supreme Court of Israel (portraits of the formers presidents of the Supreme Court). 7. Israeli Museums (The Tel-Aviv Museum of Art, the Jerusalem Museum of Art) Rachel Kogan, a daughter of a Russian Revolution, was born in 1912 . She lived in a very sensational period politically and artistically. This period of time represented a transformation from Avant- Garde to Socialist Realism. The 1920's were known as a period of hunger, the 30's a period of fear and Stalinist Terror, the 40's a period of war and the 50's a period of somber. Rachel Kogan had the privilege to sense and record all of these important changes of Russian history and portray in her work. Fortunately, her works survived the siege and the Nazi bombings on Leningrad, as they were stored in the basements of the Academy. Rachel Kogan was not only a daughter of the Revolution, but also a victim of that Revolution. At the age of six she witnessed the pogroms of the Revolution in her native Ukraine. The emotional battering that Kogan was exposed to was so severe that through adolescence and early adult life she was unable to leave her room. Although she overcame her fears, these memories remained embedded in her mind. Kogan graduated from the Leningrad Academy of Art before World War II, when the academy was still considered one of the finest in Europe. Rachel Kogan, a Russian Jewish artist, is a kind of legend in the Russian art world. She began her work at the end of the Russian Avant-Gardes epoch and continued on to Socialist Realism. Rachel's focus switched to Modern Realism when she moved to Israel. She was a phenomenon as a Jewish female artist; one of the only in this period. In Russia, Stalin's terror against Russian Jews was on the rise. Jewish women that recorded socialist achievements in factories were extremely unusual. Kogan didn't even need the government's encouragement to go to the Sergei Kirov steel factories. She loved the atmosphere and was glad to set up her easel beside the workmen. She was a student of masters such as Kardovsky and Shukhayev. Once Rachel had been convinced of the universal necessity for serious academics, she began receiving advice and support from Osmerkin and Petrov-Vodkin. Guided in her artistic and pedagogical activities by Realistic tradition, Kogan's portraits, landscapes and numerous drawings bear the marks of professionalism and high graphic culture. The best of them present a solid argument in favor of the vast potential of the Realistic Method. Her landscapes and views of Leningrad, Siberia and Pereslavl, are full of lyricism and clear emotions. Every portrait has a sharp characteristic and her still-life engage with the beauty of their colors and shapes. It is evident that the rules and ideas of Soviet art contributed to establishing the artist's views, yet her art cannot be conveniently and rigidly framed within official realism. Rachel Kogan possessed a stable and whole personality that rejects any hint of dualism in opinions, actions, and art. This wholeness seems to have been built in her youth. The start of her creative life coincided with the end of the Russian Avant-Garde epoch. Her drawings bear witness to the fact that she was able to grapple with a wide spectrum of Russian international art - from Cubism to Suprematism. This ability did not wane over the years. It actually became a part of her creative method. Kogan's art reflects the naked truth of life. We may agree or disagree with the artist's opinions, but her firm position deserves our respect. Kogan's work is amazingly different from most Israeli artists, but seems to oppose only the modern art of Israel. Essentially, her works are a necessary component of the universal structure of the fine arts culture. They develop in a multitude of ways - not archaic but modern, yet based on solid classical traditions and professional studies.

Minor wear but overall in great condition. The box has somewhat more wear to the edges. Cards have a red border. very good I have been trying to find a set of these cards for over 10 years and finally acquired a set 4 years ago in the blue. The Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards has been producing presentation packs and commemorative packs of cards since 1882. Each year they choose a different theme of which the Antarctic has been chosen twice. (see our other listing) the present example is extremely decorative and shows Amundsen and his crew at the South Pole. Each one of the cards shows the same scene with a normal image of the regular suit of cards on the obverse. The deck was issued in two colours both Blue and Red. The ace of spades shows the image of the Master of the Society, W.B.M. Bird as well. Complete decks along with the original box are very scarce even among card collectors. 1912

(44.4 x 31.8")   CONDITION SEE PHOTOS: AGE AND USE WEAR TEARS TO EDGES, SMALL HOLES,BENDS    Ferdinand I (26 February 1861 - 10 September 1948),[1] born Ferdinand Maximilian Karl Leopold Maria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was the ruler of Bulgaria from 1887 to 1918, first as knyaz (prince regnant, 1887-1908) and later as tsar (1908-1918). He was also an author, botanist, entomologist and philatelist.   Like many other rulers before him, Ferdinand desired the creation of a "new Byzantium".[8] In 1912, Ferdinand joined the other Balkan states in an assault on the Ottoman Empire to free occupied territories. He saw this war as a new crusade declaring it, "a just, great and sacred struggle of the Cross against the Crescent."[9] Bulgaria contributed the most and also lost the greatest number of soldiers. The great powers insisted on the creation of an independent Albania.[3] Soon after, Bulgaria invaded its recent allies Serbia and Greece, before being attacked itself by Romania and the Ottoman Empire. Although Bulgaria was defeated, the 1913 Treaty of Bucharest granted the Kingdom some territorial gains. A tiny area of land giving access to the Aegean Sea was secured.[3
