La Normandie : projet de carton pour la tapisserie de la manufacture des Gobelins. Étude 4

Original ink drawing. Several sketches on a letter folded in half. Signature stamp of the artist's signature in the lower right corner of the work, and signature stamp of the workshop at the back. Louis Anquetin, through his friendship with the art critic Gustave Geoffroy who was appointed director of the National Manufactures, received three orders for cartons Gobelins, the "Burgundy" in 1911, a carpet "Swans" and in 1912 " Normandy "tapestry. A trace of center fold, otherwise good condition. Provenance: the artist's studio, referenced to catalog Atelier Louis Anquetin (Thierry de Maigret, 28/11/08). Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant-garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. With Émile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893, Louis Anquetin continues to explore new opportunities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, after a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias pictorial that will line the general art movement, and take away from his friends. Dazzled by the baroque art and its creative force, so he thinks his childhood friends were involved in a pathway leading to the death of painting. He believes in a "perfect painting" which is embodied in the re-remember the lessons of Michelangelo and Rubens among others. His work becomes more conventional, he advocated a return to business by offering to reflect on the a priori conditions of any possible form of art in accordance with the rules of perspective and anatomy, as practiced by the masters the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Leaving only a few works that can be described as monumental, Anquetin turns prolific with its many studies and sketches, who considered that the design was "a very powerful means of expression" compulsory foundation of all arts plastics. Working voluntarily countdown of his time, Louis Anquetin made possible the existence of an original modern figuration. By his obstinacy and his passion for painting, he has indeed prevented is completely closed the way to the great Western tradition. You can admire his works in many prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay or the Louvre in Paris, San Francisco and Detroit, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery and the Tate London, etc.. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Prison memoirs of An Anarchist

New York: Mother Earth Publishing Association 1912 - Original olive green cloth. frontis portrait of Berkman"At the time of the Homestead Strike." Gift inscription from Berman to C.V. Cook to the front end paper. In ink, states that this was part of Home Library at Home Hall. This is Berkman’s account of his experience in prison in Western Penitentiary of Pennsylvania, in Pittsburgh, from 1892 to 1906. The book begins with the details of how Berkman came to be imprisoned: as an anarchist activist, he had attempted to assassinate wealthy industrialist Henry Clay Frick, manager of the Carnegie steel works in Pennsylvania. The cloth is somewhat faded and has a little staining. Chipping to the top edge of the spine - but has been sympathetically repaired. Darkening to the pages, and the ink of the gift inscription is somewhat faded, but still legible. Some handling, and obviously read, but still very presentable. Berkman - Russian born, anarchist and lover of Emma Goldman, in 1919 he was finally deported to the Soviet Union where he would also be eventually expelled. Cook, Cassius V., 1879-1950 - American anarchist, worked in Chicago as treasurer of the Rationalist Association of North America in 1915 and publisher of the Libertarian Magazine. In 1917-1918 he was secretary-treasurer of Daniel Wallace's League of Humanity. He spoke at an Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman Protest Defense Meeting, held under the auspices of the League of Humanity on 23 June 1917 with Daniel H. Wallace, William Nathanson, and William Abrams. Cook was arrested on 28 March 1918 and charged with violation of the Espionage act, but was able to escape a prison term "due to the extraordinary cautiousness of my good friend Attorney Harold O. Mulks of Chicago." (Cook to Agnes Inglis 26, March 1943, Cassius Cook Papers, Labadie Collection, University of Michigan), Lucy Parsons put up her house in Chicago to help bail out Cook in 1918 and he was released about a month after his arrest. In April 1918 Mother Earth Bulletin reported that he was arrested and placed under $10,000 bail, charged with conspiracy to obstruct the draft, and a C.V. Cook Defense Committee was organized in Chicago. After his release from Cook County Jail he became publicity director for the Tom Mooney case in Chicago, and was then appointed by the President of the Chicago Federation of Labor to a Committee of Fifteen to help build a chain of cooperative retail stores and a national cooperative Wholesale shop, a venture which eventually failed.         [Portrait broadside or poster]: Grace C. Strachan, the President of the Interborough Association of Women Teachers

New York: Malcom & Hayes, 1912. Very Good. Portrait poster tribute to Grace C. Strachan, the President of the Interborough Association of Women Teachers and the leader of the "Movement for Equal Pay" in New York City. Printed on heavy card stock and measuring 10.25" x 15.5". Near very good with some light soiling at the margins. Once mounted as some paper remnants are affixed to the verso, with a crack or split at the upper right corner; held together by one of the paper remnants. The poster features a portrait of Strachan positioned above a plaque dated 1912 with verses lauding her qualities.Strachan began her teaching career in Brooklyn in 1893 and was rapidly promoted until in 1900 she had become the Associate Superintendent of Schools. When the greater New York City school system was consolidated in 1900, she was selected to serve as a district superintendent. At the time, beginning women teachers were paid only $600 a year or about two-thirds that of a beginning male teacher ($900), and women's salaries topped out at $1,440 year or about 60% that of a male teacher ($2,400/year) with equivalent credentials and experience. In her new position, Strachan began campaigning for "Equal Pay for Equal Work" and eventually published a book with that title about the same time she became the President of the Interborough Association of Women Teachers (IAWT).As the association president she lobbied extensively for the cause, and was finally successful in the fall of 1911. This tribute poster was printed the following year. Interestingly, she may have become quite wealthy as a result of her campaign as *The New York Times reported that 90% of New York City's female teachers pledged to contribute their first month's salary increase - a total of over $200,000 - as a thank-you "endowment" to Strachan who, when questioned, did not definitively deny that she would accept such a gift, replying, "That is like asking a boy if he would refuse to be President of the United States. We can't grasp what is only in the air."

Spine with five raised bands paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt-ruled board edges, decorative gilt turn-ins, cockerel end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. From the early 1970s through the early 1990s I had a few hundred books bound specially for me (E. Joseph) by Zaehnsdorf of London who were later taken over by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Zaehnsdorf already had several of the original front cover blocks for these limited editions and over the years we had many more cut for the signed limited Rackhams, Dulacs, Nielsens, Robinsons etc, etc."In Bill the Minder Heath Robinson really found himself. The story is a simple tale or a series of tales about the wanderings of the King of Troy and a boot-cleaner called Bill, who became the Minder (today he would be called a baby-sitter) to the bad-tempered family of a bad-tempered mushroom-gatherer named Crispin. Like most of Heath Robinson's characters, Bill was a solemn little person who took his minding very seriously, even to the extent of studying at the British Museum and in the Minding Room of the Patents Museum at South Kensington. Soon his fame as a Minder spread and he found himself minding a large flock of children. One day they were out in the fields, being minded by Bill, they found an eccentric old man in a haystack. It was the King of Troy, who had been banished from his country. With Bill's assistance, the children set out on a journey, and through a series of adventures they restore this unworldly old gentleman to his throne. In the process they meet some very droll characters. These are the substance of some of Heath Robinson's wittiest drawings" (Lewis, p. 102).Beare 69b; Lewis, p. 216.

Mabileau & Co. Paris 1912 - Two hand-coloured pochoir prints; one with two corners chipped. Size: 68 cm x 34 cm. Striking record of early military aviation, at the dawn of World War I. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Zeppelins and Tennis. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Captain Johnston's Report of the General Scheme for the Improvement of the River Murray; together with Plans and Estimates. [Bound together with] Report on Improvements in the Vicinity of the Mouth of the River Murray, South Australia

Adelaide, R.E.E. Rogers, Government Printer, 1912 [and] 1913. Foolscap folio, 66 pages plus a folding chart, 3 large folding plans or charts (describing a typical plan of a lock and weir, and charting the effects of certain reservoirs on navigation) and a large folding map of the Murray (555 x 910 mm, the 'section between Swan Reach and Wentworth ... showing locations of lock-sites', with a very large inset map of the entire length of the river), [and] 32 pages plus a folding map ('Proposed improvements in the vicinity of the mouth of the River Murray', 537 x 518 mm). Contemporary full morocco lettered in gilt on the front cover 'Captain Johnston's River Murray Reports'; the original spine is missing and has been replaced with a fairly pedestrian piece of cloth, giving it a quarter cloth look; extremities rubbed, bumped and a little worn; title pages a little marked (with the second one a little foxed along the top margin); neat repairs to a few trifling tears to the folding plans (with a tape-stain to an old repair along one fold of the last map); slight nicks to the bottom edge of some leaves in the first paper; overall in very good condition. The ownership signature of Arthur Searcy (1913) is written in pencil on each title page. Arthur Searcy (1852-1935) was Controller of Harbors from July 1911 and Chairman of the Harbors Board Committee until his retirement at the age of 65 (information from the Searcy scrapbooks in the State Library of South Australia). He was the older brother of the more well-known Alfred (1854-1925). Loosely inserted are retained duplicate typescripts of two letters (in all, four pages foolscap) from Searcy, as Chairman of the Board, to the Minister of Marine, regarding proposed works at Victor Harbor (one page) and Goolwa (three pages). The letters are signed and dated at the head by Searcy (August and September 1922 respectively); the one on Goolwa raises numerous objections to Johnston's scheme. Three related contemporary newspaper cuttings (one printing a lengthy letter from Simpson Newland) are also present. The September 1928 ownership signature of E.H. Bakewell is written in pencil on the recto of the front flyleaf. Bakewell was managing director of the South Australian Reinforced Concrete Company, which makes sense in this context.

        Prison memoirs of An Anarchist

Original olive green cloth. frontis portrait of Berkman"At the time of the Homestead Strike." Gift inscription from Berman to C.V. Cook to the front end paper. In ink, states that this was part of Home Library at Home Hall. This is Berkman's account of his experience in prison in Western Penitentiary of Pennsylvania, in Pittsburgh, from 1892 to 1906. The book begins with the details of how Berkman came to be imprisoned: as an anarchist activist, he had attempted to assassinate wealthy industrialist Henry Clay Frick, manager of the Carnegie steel works in Pennsylvania.

        The Brothers Karamazov

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1912. First American edition. One of the towering classics of Russian literature. First translated into English in the 20th century by Constance Garnett, as the first book in her series "The Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky." Constance Garnett is responsible for introducing many works of Russian literature to English readers for the first time, including books by Tolstoy and Turgenev. "[her] translations read easily... her versions were in many cases pioneering versions."(Oxford Guide to Literature in English Translations). A quick search on Americana Exchange reveals a single copy of this first US edition (using the British sheets) sold by Swann in 2017 for $10,000. The British edition appears equally rare. A Very Good+ copy. Spine darkened and chipped at the crown, minor soiling to the boards (and an ink mark to the rear board), internal contents generally in excellent shape. Top edge gilt. One of the great works of world literature. Dealing with questions of belief and faith in a seemingly ambivalent world, "The Brothers Karamazov" has influenced countless writers and thinkers. Freud called it "the most magnificent novel ever written" and Nietzsche ironically said Dostoyevsky was "the only psychologist ... from whom I had something to learn; he ranks among the most beautiful strokes of fortune in my life." The book took over two years for Dostoyevsky to write - he died months after its publication. "What makes [you] read it too, is sheer breathless interest in the people and the drama... every man, woman, and child introduced in these 840 pages is human - convincingly and horribly human." (Contemporary New York Times Review.).

A graduate of the Royal Institute of British Architects, where he was a pupil of William Burgess, Conder was awarded the institute's prestigious Soane Prize in 1876, recognition of his talent and potential. In 1877, aged 25, Conder arrived in Japan, where he served concurrently as professor of architecture at the Imperial College of Engineering, and as consultant to the Building and Repair Division of the Ministry of Public Works. He was to remain in Japan until his death in 1920, devoting his life to modernizing Japan's architectural technology. . Between 1878 and 1907, Conder designed over 50 major Western-style buildings in Tokyo. These included the Tokyo Imperial Museum in Ueno (1881), the largest brick building in Japan of its day, the Kaitakushi Bussan Urisabakijo [1881], a marketplace for selling produce from Hokkaido, and the Rokumeikan state reception hall (1883), a symbol of the Meiji government's Westernizing aspirations. Conder built in a variety of styles, ranging from Gothic to Renaissance to Tudor to Moorish, contributing to the progressive, eclectic appearance of Meiji period architecture while suggesting he was struggling to find a suitable idiom for Japan. For example, the Tokyo Imperial Museum showed Islamic Indian influence, the Kaitakushi building Victorian Gothic tendencies, and the Rokumeikan English Renaissance tastes. . For the Meiji administration, however, which sought a more mainstream European style, Conder's approach proved a little too wide-ranging, and in due course he set up his own firm, although he continued to advise the government. Conder went into private practice in 1888. His commissions included the first Mitsubishi building in the redbrick Marunouchi district of Tokyo [1894], a residence in Yushima for Hisaya Iwasaki [1896] and the Mitsui Club in Mita, used by the Mitsui family for entertaining [1913]. He paid full attention to interiors as well as exteriors, so that these residences were perfectly coordinated, and all his projects bore his distinctive touch. As the Imperial College of Engineering's chief instructor for the Engineering Science Department, Conder organized lessons and delivered lectures. His courses covered everything from ancient Egyptian through Indian to contemporary European architecture, and focused on construction techniques using wood, brick and stone. . Conder also gave demonstrations on site, such as
