Two speech pamphlets: Irish Home Rule delivered 8 February 1912 and The Liberal Government and Naval Policy delivered 18 March 1912

London: The Liberal Publication Department, 1912. 1st Edition. Paperback. Near fine. Here are original, first printing pamphlet publications of two seminal Churchill speeches. The first is Churchill's controversial 8 February 1912 speech in Belfast supporting Irish Home Rule. The second is Churchill's 18 March 1912 speech in the House of Commons - his first time as First Lord of the Admiralty introducing the Navy budget and setting British strategy to counter Germany in a naval arms race. Both pamphlets feature Churchill's resolute and eloquent independence, showing the character that later carried him through political isolation in the 1930s into the hard-won triumphs of World War II. Both pamphlets are in pristine condition, being bound in the volume "Pamphlets and Leaflets 1912" issued by the Liberal Publication Department in 1913. These bound compilations were issued annually - usually in utilitarian bindings with black morocco spines over ribbed green cloth boards. This scarce 1912 volume bears two important, rare, and keenly sought original Churchill speech pamphlets. Irish Home Rule is a 16-page wire stitched pamphlet in paper covers, published by The Liberal Publication Department and printed by Page & Thomas, Ltd., Chesham. Churchill's family had supported unyielding British control over Ireland. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, won political victories through his support of the Unionists in Ulster. Over time, Winston came to support Home Rule, spurred by the successful example of South Africa, where he had been so involved in his early career. On 8 February 1912 Winston spoke in Belfast in favor of Home Rule - the same Belfast where his father, Lord Randolph, famously opposed Home Rule, declaring in 1886 "Ulster will fight and Ulster will be right." Winston's 1912 reply: "Why cannot this great settlement be made? We have made friends with our enemies; can we not make friends with our comrades too?" This was a major and controversial event, involving extraordinary precautions to protect Churchill's physical safety from hostile crowds. The Home Rule crisis of 1912-1914 was sidelined by the outbreak of World War I. Nonetheless, Churchill would ultimately introduce the Irish Free Sate Bill, which won passage in 1922. The Liberal Government and Naval Policy is a 24-page wire-stitched pamphlet in paper covers published by The Liberal Publication Department and printed by the National Press Agency Ltd., London. In 1911, Churchill was offered the prize Cabinet position of First Lord of the Admiralty, which he held until 1915 when blame for the Gallipoli disaster forced his resignation. In 1912, a global naval arms race was in full swing among the great powers. Until Germany began flexing naval muscle in 1911, Churchill was reluctant to squander public money and favored building fewer Dreadnought battleships than some of his Cabinet peers. But in February of 1912 Churchill called for formation of an additional Battle Squadron in Home waters and an increase in the number of ships, stating "there is no longer any financial saving to be looked for." His Naval budget and policy speech in the House of Commons 18 March 1912 laid out plans to address the German threat and ensure Dreadnought supremacy. Churchill's speech was praised for candor and clarity. To his credit, Churchill sought to leverage peace from the position of increased strength; in the months following his speech, Churchill pressed - unsuccessfully - to reduce Anglo-German tension and temporarily halt naval construction. Both of these rare speech pamphlets encapsulate pivotal evolutions in Churchill's personal and political character. The speech pamphlets are perfectly preserved within the binding. The binding itself is in near-fine condition. The pebble grain leather spine shows very light sunning, but retains bright gilt, shows only minor wear at the spine ends, and remains supple with no cracks. The ribbed green cloth boards are bright and clean. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A35.1 & A36, Woods A20(a) & A21.

THE STONEGROUND GHOST TALES COMPILED FROM THE RECOLLECTIONS OF THE REVEREND ROLAND BATCHEL, VICAR OF THE PARISH

Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons Ltd.,. 1912. original pictorial blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black.. Cloth rubbed at upper spine end, spine panel tanned, endpapers and. page edges just a bit tanned, a very good copy. Penciled signature of. A. Langley Searles, noted fantasy enthusiast and publisher of the. long-running fanzine, FANTASY COMMENTATOR, dated 1944 on front paste-. down. A pretty attractive copy of a book rarely found in nice. condition. (#130812). First edition. A collection of nine ghost stories dedicated to Swain's longtime friend M. R. James. "... Swain's tales share many features with those of James' and draw on the friends' common interests and antiquarian studies. They are however rather milder in tone and regularly incorporate a playful humour not often found in James' work. The tales relate the adventures of a fictionalized version of the author, Mr Batchel, Rector of Stoneground parish. Although by today's standards, readers may find Swain's stories rather lacking in supernatural horrors, their subtle qualities become apparent on re-reading, and many find Mr Batchel one of the most enduring creations of English ghost fiction." - Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 468.         THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF AN EX-COLOURED MAN

Boston: Sherman, French & Co., 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Some spotting and discoloration to the scarlet cloth, mostly on the spine and at the rear with minor fraying at the head of the spine. Still a Very Good copy and exceptionally scarce when signed. Original gilt-decorated cloth. Johnson's first book, a fictional autobiography that appeared anonymously and explored the issue of a black man passing for white in America, serving as a launchpad for many later novels exploring the question of what it means to be black in America. This self-published first printing fared poorly, accounting in large part for the book's notorious scarcity, and it did not reach a wide readership until the second edition was published in 1927 and Johnson claimed authorship. INSCRIBED and SIGNED in full by the author "To Mr. Hamilton Holt,/With the sincere admiration/and esteem of the author,/James W. Johnson./New York City,/Sept. 30, 1913." It was in New York four years earlier that Holt helped to found the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). At the time of publication of this book Holt was proprietor and editor of the weekly INDEPENDENT. He was also one of this country's foremost internationalists, founding the World Federation League and serving as president of the American Peace Congress and director of the World Peace Foundation before spending years promoting the League of Nations. After an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut, Holt accepted the presidency of Rollins College in Florida. Blockson's 101 Influential Books: #56.         AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to his wife

Long Key, FL, 29 Jan. 1912. Letter. Folds from mailing, still about Fine, with envelope. A one-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED as "Doc" to his wife "Dolly" with fine content on Florida East Coast Hotel Co./Long Key Fishing Camp stationery with envelope. In full: "It sure is hunting my forgotten birthday! Let's see. I'll be 38. Gee! I feel old. But maybe its this damned languorous climate. I've been eating too much, also. There isn't any news. The sun shines, the winds blow, and time flies. I'll be home soon again. I have not been fishing yet. This matter of work begins to drag on me. If I don't work I'm unhappy. Yesterday I wrote some of the scenario of the play. I've somehow lost confidence since I read that play book. But things will come to a head soon. I'm glad for this past week. I seem to be my old self again. Aren't you glad? I'd appreciate a letter from you occasionally. You'll be mad when you see that all this fat [?] letter is not a love letter to you. With love to all, Doc." Superb letter mentioning his two loves--fishing and writing--addressed to his other love.

Home Rule in a Nutshell

London: The Daily Chronicle, 1912. Paperback. Near fine. This rare pamphlet publication represents itself as "A pocket book for speakers and electors, containing a brief exposition of the arguments for Home Rule, and answers to the objections raised." This third ("Revised and Enlarged") edition of 1912 is the first to contain an important 4-page introduction by Winston Churchill, lending his name, and influence to the cause. At the time of publication, Churchill served in the Cabinet as First Lord of the Admiralty. His four-page introduction is decisively favorable to the cause: "The facts and arguments collected in this brief epitome deserve the attention of fair-minded and patriotic Englishmen." Churchill frames the arguments in the pamphlet thus: "if they are favorable, what a sorry part will a man have played who out of carelessness, prejudice, or partisanship is guilty of obstructing a settlement earnestly desired by the Irish people, and politic and necessary in itself!" Churchill's family had supported unyielding British control over Ireland. Nonetheless, Churchill would ultimately introduce the Irish Free State Bill, which won passage in 1922. The rare pamphlet publication offered here is a small but substantive publication. It is string-bound in paper wraps, measures 5.25 x 4 inches, and is thick for a pamphlet, with 92 pages of small, dense print. Churchill's introduction is prominently advertised on the front cover. Condition is very good indeed for an item of this age and fragility. The paper wraps are lightly soiled, but complete with no loses or tears and tightly bound, with the original string binding intact. The contents are lightly age-toned, but otherwise clean and tight. The only marking found is an ink-stamped previous owner name to the blank inside front cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen B10.1. (Woods mentions only the later, fourth edition, as Woods B5)

For Eldredge's The beginnings of San Francisco, the 47 California-themed printing blocks used to produce the volume’s illustrations

Pr. John C. Rankin Company New York San Francisco: Pr. John C. Rankin Company (New York), 1912. The paper wrappers present are variously just fine or age-toned or browned, chipped, torn along folds. ALL the blocks are in good condition; this is not a sort of thing easily damaged!. 37 half-tone plates (on copper), 10 zinc cuts, all on their wood blocks; plus 3 additional plates on copper and another zinc cut, similarly mounted. A full set of the printer's blocks prepared of the illustrations for Zoeth Skinner Eldredge's The Beginnings of San Francisco (1912), being 37 photographic half-tones on copper and 10 zinc cuts, all on wood blocks, ranging generally in size from approximately 2.5" square to 14" square, with oblong maps measuring up to 20" across. A number of the half-tones were done after drawings by Walter Francis, a California artist and illustrator who worked for the San Francisco Chronicle; a few blocks offer images of photographs, some identified as taken by W.C. Mendenhall of the U.S. Geological Survey or Captain D.D. Gaillard of the Boundary Commission; other images are said to be from paintings and a daguerrotype held privately, with another being the facsimile of a document in the John Carter Brown Library; and, indeed, some are simply "after" images in other books (e.g., The Annals of San Francisco and "Bartlett's Narrative"). The images include a dozen California maps and plans; photographic views of the Colorado Desert and an artistic sketch of "the Trail on the Gila"; portraits of prominent early Californians; several "military moments" and a plan of the Presidio in 1820; plus, notably, scenic and historic "views" including renderings of "the Palo Alto," the ports of Monterey and San Diego, Yerba Buena, and a number of street and bay scenes depicting San Francisco proper.Eldredge was a New York–born banker and amateur historian of California whose Beginnings of San Francisco, though possibly self-published, is listed in Cowan & Cowan and described there as "of great historical value."In addition to the 47 images/blocks from that work present here, we offer four others that seem to be "related" but which we have not identified beyond establishing that they do not seem to be from the same author's History of California (1915). We must wonder, were they images prepared for the Beginnings and not used? The additional zinc-cut image of a document signed by Gaspar de Portola and two of the three additional half-tones on copper (Portola sighting San Francisco bay and the Spaniards marching to Monterey) were found as online images without clear attribution as to their physical sources; and the last, a western scene not identified, has not yet been "matched" at all. Most blocks from the Beginnings are still in or with => wrappers showing the images printed from them, as would have been convenient for the printers — these marked (as the backs of the blocks themselves sometimes are) identifying the images and/or showing that the work was completed. (The additional blocks are unwrapped and unmarked.)In sum, this => complete array of the blocks used for printing a substantial and well-regarded Titanic-era book looks like something that was put on a printing house shelf one afternoon in 1912 at the end of an ordinary project for the pressmen and simply stayed there. Seeing it in on its present PRB&M shelf, coherent and unmessed-with, is like walking up to that shelf just about precisely 100 years later.

Blackie & Son Ltd, London - 1st edition. n. d. (circa 1912). Khaki cloth backed boards with a picture pastedown of a cat scout. Grey pictorial endpapers, unpaginated (48pp) each with colour illustrations. The boards are somewhat rubbed particularly on the edges and fore edge corners. The free endpapers are slightly toned and there is a crease to the top corner of the f.f.e.p. Internally, the book is very good with bright colour illustrations to every page. There is a gift inscription dated Christmas 1914/15 to the recto of the frontispiece. There is a closed tear of 1.5cm to the bottom edge of the third leaf and occasional marks throughout. In the bottom couple of centimeters of the spine the stitching in the binding has come slightly loose but otherwise the stitching is firm and the pages are well secured. Duke of the Abruzzi, stands foremost among climbers of royal lineage. He brought Filippo de Filippi to mountaineering literature and Sella to mountain photography. This beautiful work describing the Duke's expedition to K2, the second highest mountain in the world, in the Karakoram Himalaya, and the attempt on Bride Peak, is one of the classics of Himalayan literature... While the expedition was not the first into the Karakoram, this book is regarded as the definitive early work on that region..."(COX 45, "Classics in the Literature of Mountaineering and Mountain Travel from the Francis P.
