Guide de l'amateur de livres a vignettes du XVIIIe siecle. Sixieme edition. WITH: Henri-Jean Reynaud. Notes supplementaires sur les livres a gravures du XVIII siecle

Paris, 1912. Sixth and Best Edition. IN VERY GOOD ANTIQUARIAN CONDITION. Together 3 vols., small 4to. Ad 1 (Cohen-De Ricci): two volumes, contemporary blue calf, five raised bands on spine, compartments framed by single gilt fillets, titles lettered direct, all edges gilt, original wrappers bound in. Ad 2 (Reynaud, Supplement. Geneve: Bibliotheque des erudits, 1955): contemporary red quarter morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, top edges gilt, original wrappers bound in. ONE OF 50 COPIES ON HOLLANDE, the paper completely free of all blemishes even after more than 100 years, and with all the plates in TWO STATES (before and after letters) PLUS two autograph notes from Seymour de Ricci. * Rare on the market: ABPC lists only two copies that have appeared at auction in at least thirty-five years: the Louis J. Cartier copy, inscribed to him by De Ricci, which sold three times (Swann, Apr. 28, 2005, $1500 + buyer's premium; Swann, Sept. 29, 1988, lot 77; Sotheby's, Dec. 11, 1984, lot 339) and the Hirsch copy in poor condition (sold Adler, Paris, June 13, 1978, lot 299). Ours is the Martin Breslauer - B.H. Breslauer copy which contains two signed letters from Seymour de Ricci to H. Eisemann, likewise a bookseller, based in Zurich and later in London. * As is well known, "Cohen-De Ricci" is the still-indispensible bibliography of 18th-century French illustrated books, continuously in print for 100 years, and remains the ne-plus-ultra of its genre.

Five Volume Set Consisting of: The Threefold Life of Man, The Forty Questions of the Soul and the Clavis, The Three Principles of the Divine Essence, and A.J. Penny Studies in Jacob Bohme, all bound in 3/4 Levant Morocco

London: John M. Watkins, 1912. Hardcover. Near Fine. 4 works in 5 volumes. 23.3x15 cm. (9¼x5¾"), uniformly bound in ¾ green levant morocco with gilt monogram "EM" tooled on front coves, spines tooled & lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. One of 26 specially-bound copies of these works by or about the seventeenth century German Christian mystic and theologian. Each volume with printed leaf stating this to be a "Special Hand Bound Edition. Of this edition twenty-six lettered copies have been bound by hand. This copy is letter 'h'." The set was bound in 1912. The volumes are all first editions by Watkins of London. The Threefold Life of Man (1912, 628pp), The Forty Questions of the Soul and the Clavis (1911, 310pp; separate pagination for The Clavis, 54pp), The Three Principles bound in two volumes (1910, 809pp), J.A. Penny's Studies in Jacob Bohme (1912, 476pp). A beautiful set that has obviously never been read. Pages Uncut in all five volumes. Spines are just a touch darker than the boards. Gilt is bright, bindings are rock solid. There are a couple of trivial nicks and that's it for wear. Easily the nicest set of Boehme I have seen.

Inspiring, signed original typed letter (TLS) from Booker T. Washington and Ephemera

Tuskegee: Booker T. Washington, 1912. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. [Tuskegee, 15 May 1912.] Letter by Booker T. Washington with his signature, requesting a contribution of tools for the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, addressed to Mr. J. T. McCready, a manufacturer in Ohio. 8vo. Single-leaf printed stationery from the Tuskegeee Institute, produced by the Strathmore Paper Company from Massachusetts, with watermark reading '[Parch]ment 1911 Strathmore'.Leaf measures 8.5 x 11 inches. Very good condition. Together with relative ephemera from the period. Original letter from Booker T. Washington, Principal of the Tuskegeee Institute for African Americans, and leading Black rights activist, signed in his hand, only three years prior to his death."We are in need of tools and implements - also for use on our farms... such as you distribute or manufacture... We have nearly sixteen hundred students here. They pay their own board and other personal expenses, but they are not able to pay the cost of teaching or the cost of equipping... Any help... we shall be glad to receive."Four ephemeral items accompany Washington's letter. Of particular rarity is a commemorative envelope for opening of the 'Booker T Washington Birthplace Post Office' in 1948, which bears the original signature of his daughter, Portia Washington Pittman, and a rare 3 cent postage First Day Cover (FDC) stamp of George Washington Carver, who taught for forty-seven years at the Tuskegee Institute and was born into slavery. Also with a rubber-stamped cachet reading 'Booker Washington Birthplace VA, Feb. 12, 1948, 5-PM' and with the official 'Opening Day Cancellation' stamp (now known as the first-day-of-issue cancellation). In addition to the envelope, two ephemeral prospectus leafs promote the Booker T. Washington Memorial Half Dollar, a legal tender minted in 1915, post mortem in honour of his legacy. The coin read 'From Slave Cabin to Hall of Fame.' Both leafs printed in Virginia, for the 'Booker T. Washington Birthplace Memorial Commission' whose president was S. J. Phillips. Finally, a single-leaf pamphlet, printed in conjunction with the latter two items, comprises the Atlanta Exposition Address delivered by Booker T. Washington in Atlanta in 1895.Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born a slave on the tobacco plantation of James Burroughs in Franklin Country, Virginia. His father was an unknown white man and his mother, the slave of James Burroughs. Washington was an educator, author, orator, advisor to Republican presidents. From 1890 to 1915 he was the dominant leader in the African-American community. After the Civil War, he founded the Tuskegee School.

Collection of Four Autograph Letters, Signed ("Leonard West"), to R.B. Marston, editor of the Fishing Gazette, August to December 1912, concerning printing and publishing The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation, and preparation of the deluxe copies

Ravenhead, St. Helens (England): Published by the Author, 1912. Pen and ink on paper. 15 pp. total. 1 vols. 12mo. Green buckram portfolio. Letters generally fine. Book: original olive cloth, a trifle worn, spine faded, else fine. West to Marston on producing and selling The Natural Trout Fly Fascinating clutch of letters from Leonard West discussing the production and early sales of The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation, now recognized as one of the classic works of pre-war English angling literature, with information on the deluxe edition containing hand-tied flies. The recipient, R.B. Marston, author of Walton and the Earlier Angler Authors and the 1901 Supplement to the Bibliotheca Piscatoria, was the influential editor of the Fishing Gazette for many years. - The first letter (3 pp.) is dated 14 August 1912, and begins, "Herewith I have the pleasure in enclosing review copy of my book 'The Natural Trout Fly & Its Imitation' & hope you will find the volume worthy of a favorable review ... I think the printers deserve a good word for the way they have turned out the plates ..." (Docketed with a note in Marston's hand "See my note in FG Aug. 24 1912 RBM.") - The second letter, dated 23 August, thanks Marston for a "very handsome" Note in the Fishing Gazette (see clipping inserted in the book) and discusses other early notices: "The 'Scotsman' gives me a good word, shot but quite O.K.. The Sporting & Dramatic 'have given instructions for it to be well reviewed & request permission to reproduce one of the plates' That for an outsider seems going it pretty strong - does it not? ... I have unloaded 100 up to now & sent for more." West also details progress on the edition de luxe "My leisure at present is occupied in dressing flies & trying to get others up to concert pitch ... I have booked 19 E. de luxe" - The third letter (2 pp.), dated 21 October, notes that West is sending Marston "the edition de luxe of my book & hope you will like the get up & also the flies therein. The demand has been much greater than the supply so there will be little difficulty in disposing of a copy if desired at a premium. Other copies should all be sent out in the next fortnight ... The ordinary edition is quietly going out all the time & hosts of appreciative letters are received not only from English customers but from France & America, also." (Docketed see F.G. note Oct. 26/12). - the fourth letter (4 pp.), dated 12 December 1912, discusses sales of the book: "Sales are moving all the time, lowest number sent off in any week being 10 & the average being 31.76 per week. I do no know if a "proper" publisher would consider this satisfactory but possibly he might not talk to his customers in the blunt way I do to some of mine!" West also discusses two flies, Orange Partridge and Snipe & Purple: "but what is a snipe & purple? It is over thirty years since old Joe Moses, a well known North country catcher of fish shewed me how to make it ... but not dressed as now sold, but thusly [details & sketch follow] keep it thin both in body thorax & legs." West adds a note at the top "P.S. What about the Hon. D. Fearing? - his copy - of the Ed. de luxe" With a copy of the printed book (Marston's Occasional Note, "Send Your Money!" from the Fishing Gazette for 24 August 1912, clipped and tipped in to front pastedown). Choice group of letters with substantial content and an important association.

Les Oeuvres Burlesques et Mystiques de Frere Matorel Mort au Couvent

1912. JACOB, Max. Les Oeuvres Burlesques et Mystiques de Frerè Matorel Mort au Couvent. Illustrated with 64 woodcuts by André Derain. 8vo., original wrappers in a cloth folding box. While somewhat smaller in format than the landmark "L'Enchanteur Pourissant" of 1909, and in a style more medieval than primitive, this is a striking example of the revolution which was taking place in modern art and book-making in the early years of the twentieth century.         Japanese Photo Album

1912. JAPAN. Japanese Photo Album. Collection of Fifty Hand-coloured Albumen prints. With tissue guards. Oblong folio, 260 x 350 mm (images 200 x 50 mm), bound in contemporary thick Japanese lacquer boards with hand-painted scene of fishing boat with Mount Fuji in the background. [Japan, ca 1890]. |~||~||~||~||~| These artistic photographic prints record the final vestiges of traditional Tokugawa Japan as the culture slowly emerged into the modern era (Meiji period). Temples, gardens, Shinto shrines, Kyoto shrines and street scenes, and small village scenes, Mt Fuji, tea huts, Japanese bridges, portraits of geishas, and a Kyoto sandal shop, are just a few examples of the subject matter portrayed herein. All prints are unsigned but are very much in the style of Kusakabe Kimbei (ca. 1880s -1912, Yokohama). The hand-colouring is delicately and superbly applied. "The process of hand-coloring a photograph was infinitely tedious, and a master colorist could be expected to produce two or three finished prints in a twelve hour day" (Worswick, p. 143). Surface cracks to top lacquer board. This is as fine a sample of this sort of Japanese commercial photography that one can find on the market. See: Clark Worswick, Japan: Photographs 1854-1905 (New York: Knopf, 1979).

The Journal des Dames et des Modes was a luxury magazine for an exclusive clientele; only 1279 copies of each issue were printed. The magazine appeared three times a month. The text for each number was eight pages in length and contained belles lettres, aphorisms, poetry, notes on fashion, and more, written by Jean Cocteau, Anatole France, the Comtesse de Noailles, and their contemporaries. In addition, each issue was accompanied by one to five pochoir fashion plates. The Journal des Dames et des Modes represented a new genre of fashion publishing and printmaking, with the illustrations executed by the pochoir process. Pochoir plates utilized silk screening and with up to 30 stencils for one image. The designs in the Journal des Dames et des Modes were created by well-known fashion illustrators such as Bakst, Barbier, Brunelleschi and Drian; these artists were directly influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, Fauves painters, Cubism, and Post-Impressionism. Barbier was the principal illustrator of the Journal, which established his reputation as a fashion designer. In excellent condition. Reinforced back with some gaps filled, a restored on the half-title page where FIG sending tear. Our copy is presented in a gift box full black morocco, smooth spine, marbled paper plates and interior lamb. Rouault met Léon Bloy in 1904 through one of his works: "I am told that the painter Georges Rouault, a pupil of Gustave Moreau, a passion for me. Having found his master "Poor Woman" ... this book has bitten heart, incurably wounded "(Journal of L. Bloy, March 16, 1904). Thus is born a lasting friendship between the two artists. However when in 1905 Rouault exhibited at the Autumn "Real Poulot" Salon based on the novel of Bloy's reaction it is violent: "... This artist was believed able to paint seraphim appears not conceive that atrocious and avenging cartoons. Bourgeois infamy works in him a violent impact horror that his art seems mortally wounded. He wanted to make my characters Poulot "Poor Woman". At any price I want this illustration. It was to this that there is more tragic: two citizens, male and female, complete: candid, peaceful, merciful and wise to put the scum of the scare the horses mouth constellations. He made two assassins small suburb. "None better than Raissa Maritain knew not describe complex friendship that unites the young painter and the old writer, analyzing both" the underlying reason for their dissent "citing a letter Bloy Rouault 1907:" You are attracted exclusively by the ugly. "As their" admiration "she explains as" the living faith of the one and the other, (...) elevation and the rigor of their conscience artist How many times "." - Written it - in the years that followed, have we not seen Rouault in Bloy, standing, leaning against the wall, a slight smile on her closed lips, looking into the distance, apparently impassive face, but a pallor that would be accentuated when the issue of modern painting was discussed. Rouault pale, but kept through a heroic silence. And still, despite the determined opposition on the same subject of his art, he remained faithful to Léon Bloy. It seemed he had the same look in Bloy accusations that tormented him what he held most dear - not for submission to any discussion, but to test them against the force of instinct that the led into the unknown and was overcome any obstacle. "(" At the dawn of new friendships "in New Polling October 1941) This is the same Léon Bloy, respectful but steadfastly critical of his young friend, that he dedicate this portrait of a saint, this elegy beauty that will never be able to perceive in the work of Rouault.         PETER PAN PORTFOLIO (From ‘The Little White Bird’)

London: Hodder and Stoughton. [1912]. First edition, deluxe issue. One of approximately 20 copies, signed on the mount of each plate by the artist. Additionally signed by the publishers on the limitation page. Large Folio. Publisher's full vellum with gilt titles to upper cover and silk ties. Housed in publisher's original cloth box with printed paper onlay. Twelve full size plates mounted with gilt ruled borders. Silk ties renewed. A superb copy, the vellum is beautifully clean and bright. The contents and all twelve plates, bright and fresh. The publisher's box shows some wear to the paper onlay on the lid and some damp-staining to the base. An exceptional copy, rare in this signed issue. The finest of all Rackham productions. These illustrations originally appeared in the gift book Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1906. Rackham was asked by his publisher to select his favourite twelve of the fifty illustrations from that edition to produce a collector's portfolio of plates. These plates were re-engraved to be the size of the original watercolours and produced to the highest standard. Initially an edition of 600 copies was planned, with numbers 1-100 to be bound in full vellum with each plate signed by Rackham. However for reasons unknown and as reported in the 1936 Latimore and Haskell bibliography, "Mr. Rackham advises that he signed only about twenty".
