ALBUM OF 185 VERNACULAR PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY A YOUNG JAPANESE BUSINESSMAN IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, MASSACHUSETTS, AND MAINLY IN JAPAN, 1912-1913

1912 - This album contains 185 photographs tipped to 102 pages of heavy black stock, captioned and dated in white ink. Leaf size is 7" x 10"; the average photograph size is 4" x 3.25". The spine of the album was deteriorated, so the covers have been removed and placed into clear sleeves as have all the leaves, now housed in a three-ring binder. Roughly the first third of the book is devoted to photographs taken in New England; the middle third contains photographs taken on a quick tour of Europe; and the final third comprises pictures taken in Asia-a few in South Manchuria and Korea and the rest in Japan, mostly near Kochi on Shikoku, many including the photographer's family members. In New England, we see a few pictures taken in "Pepple", New Hampshire as well as in Massachusetts: Boston Public Gardens; Lexington patriotic parade; Nantucket; Jamaica Pond; Gloucester; and Lincoln. While he is in New England, the photographer has many Japanese visitors including: Mr. Shirae (pp.1 & 9); Miss Iku Saegusa, (p.4); "Mr. Tsuboi of Tokyo" (p. 4); "Mr. K. Inouye of Osaka Public Library" and "Mr. Mori" (p. 7,), both seen on the beach at Nantucket, and the latter, Mr. Mori, reappearing on pp. 19 and 20 (with a Mr. Hisada) and later, in Japan on p. 92; and "Mr. Nashima on 'S.S. Franconia', Boston" (p. 26). All are wearing Western dress. His friends/hosts(?) are American. Of particular interest in this New England section of the album are photographs of "Our Magnolia Store". Magnolia is a small village in Gloucester, MA, and on p. 19, there is a photo of "Mr. Mori and I / Our Magnolia Store 'to be'/ May 26, 1912," showing the two men in front of an empty storefront, A photo on page 20 (same date) shows "Magnolia Store Just Built,/Mr. Mori [and] Mr. Hisada" [a clue to the photographer's name?], depicting the same imposing, Spanish-style building, with its large arched windows. Page 22 offers a shot of the photographer himself "in the Magnolia Store" (Sept. 13, 1912), where various household decorative items are displayed: lamps, dishware, etc. On p. 31, we see "Miss Brackett, sales manager of our Magnolia store, Sept. 13, 1912". Other photographs show New York's Penn Station, Central Park, SS Saxonia, &c. ~~ The European part of this album begins on p. 37 with the title " In England 1913" and including 10 pages of photographs of tourist destinations in London and environs, two of which (at Hampton Court) include a "Mr. Shimizu". On p. 44, the label is "In France 1913" (8 pages of sights, mostly in Paris and Versailles). Next comes "In Brussels, Belgium, 1913" (4 pages) followed by "In Berlin, Germany, 1913" (3 pages). ~~ The Asian portion of the journey starts on p. 60 in "South Manchuria, 1913", and these 2 ½ pages include photos of "Friends on Trans-Siberian Train, Tetsurei, Manchuria, Feb. 28 1913" (eight men, mostly Asian) and a photograph taken in Korea "Soul [sic] Keijyo, Korea (Nandaiman)": a street scene. By page 63, the photographer is "In Japan, 1913", where he remains for the rest of the album. He opens with a shot of "the staff of Yamanakas/ Main House/Osaka, March 26, 1913" (6 men and a young boy, most in kimonos, plus himself). Two photos in Kyoto follow (same date), and a scene of many people crossing a bridge, labeled "Yoshino River, Yamato, April 19, 1913". Many of the remaining photographs were taken in and around Kochi, including Tosa, Nahari, Kagami-gawa, and the beach at Katsurahama. In these pictures, Japanese relatives are in traditional dress. An early photo on p. 66 is labeled "Ah! My sister! Ushi-o-ye, near Kochi, March 29, 1913" and shows a tombstone. This is accompanied by a second photo showing a Japanese couple with a boy (his nephew Sho-chan?) labeled "Memory of our visit to the sister's grave, Ushioye". Other photos depict "father, Sister and Shigeki" (p. 78), "Father and Mother?under the pine tree" (p. 81), "Father, Mother, Sister and Shigeki" (p. 82), "Sisters" ( p. 68), showing two girls, "Shidzu-ka (a toddler) ( [Attributes: First Edition]

Collection of Four Autograph Letters, Signed ("Leonard West"), to R.B. Marston, editor of the Fishing Gazette, August to December 1912, concerning printing and publishing The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation, and preparation of the deluxe copies

Published by the Author, Ravenhead, St. Helens (England) 1912 - Pen and ink on paper. 15 pp. total. 1 vols. 12mo. West to Marston on producing and selling The Natural Trout Fly. Fascinating clutch of letters from Leonard West discussing the production and early sales of The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation, now recognized as one of the classic works of pre-war English angling literature, with information on the deluxe edition containing hand-tied flies. The recipient, R.B. Marston, author of Walton and the Earlier Angler Authors and the 1901 Supplement to the Bibliotheca Piscatoria, was the influential editor of the Fishing Gazette for many years.- The first letter (3 pp.) is dated 14 August 1912, and begins, "Herewith I have the pleasure in enclosing review copy of my book 'The Natural Trout Fly & Its Imitation' & hope you will find the volume worthy of a favorable review . I think the printers deserve a good word for the way they have turned out the plates ." (Docketed with a note in Marston's hand "See my note in FG Aug. 24 1912 RBM.")- The second letter, dated 23 August, thanks Marston for a "very handsome" Note in the Fishing Gazette (see clipping inserted in the book) and discusses other early notices: "The 'Scotsman' gives me a good word, shot but quite O.K. The Sporting & Dramatic 'have given instructions for it to be well reviewed & request permission to reproduce one of the plates' That for an outsider seems going it pretty strong - does it not? . I have unloaded 100 up to now & sent for more." West also details progress on the edition de luxe "My leisure at present is occupied in dressing flies & trying to get others up to concert pitch . I have booked 19 E. de luxe"- The third letter (2 pp.), dated 21 October, notes that West is sending Marston "the edition de luxe of my book & hope you will like the get up & also the flies therein. The demand has been much greater than the supply so there will be little difficulty in disposing of a copy if desired at a premium. Other copies should all be sent out in the next fortnight . The ordinary edition is quietly going out all the time & hosts of appreciative letters are received not only from English customers but from France & America, also." (Docketed see F.G. note Oct. 26/12).- the fourth letter (4 pp.), dated 12 December 1912, discusses sales of the book: "Sales are moving all the time, lowest number sent off in any week being 10 & the average being 31.76 per week. I do no know if a "proper" publisher would consider this satisfactory but possibly he might not talk to his customers in the blunt way I do to some of mine!" West also discusses two flies, Orange Partridge and Snipe & Purple: "but what is a snipe & purple? It is over thirty years since old Joe Moses, a well known North country catcher of fish shewed me how to make it . but not dressed as now sold, but thusly [details & sketch follow] keep it thin both in body thorax & legs." West adds a note at the top "P.S. What about the Hon. D. Fearing? - his copy - of the Ed. de luxe"With a copy of the printed book (Marston's Occasional Note, "Send Your Money!" from the Fishing Gazette for 24 August 1912, clipped and tipped in to front pastedown).Choice group of letters with substantial content and an important association. Green buckram portfolio. Letters generally fine. Book: original olive cloth, a trifle worn, spine faded, else fine Pen and ink on paper. 15 pp. total. 1 vols. 12mo

Housed in a blue cloth slipcase.William Andrew ("Willy") Pogany (born Vilmos Andreas Pogány) (August 1882 – 30 July 1955) was a prolific Hungarian illustrator of children's and other books. Pogany's best known works consist of illustrations of classic myths and legends done in the Art Nouveau style. He also worked as an art director on several Hollywood films, including Fashions of 1934 and Dames. The publication of Pogány's Lohengrin was the final act in his trilogy of masterworks focused on Wagner's Germanic tales, and one of the quintet that is considered his finest work. Pogány clearly approached the commission to illustrate Lohengrin as an opportunity to improve and extend techniques that he had developed through his preceding work, particularly The Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyám, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Tannhäuser and Parsifal. the other four books that immortalized his career as an illustrator. That commitment to ongoing innovation resulted in an incredible suite of illustrations, including color lithographs, monotone and marginal illustrations and the delightful tipped-in color plates (produced with a four-color process) included in Parsifal. Themes of medieval chivalry, erotic love and moral tests are illustrated in a lavish fashion by Pogány with an outstanding use of iconography, form and color.

Taft looks forward to the upcoming election of 1912 and "? the recent victory for constitutional government ? I am very hopeful of the result in November, but whatever happens we have fought a good fight for the country?s sake already and have won.?

Washington, June 26, 1912. 7" x 8.75". "Autograph Letter Signed, ?Wm H. Taft? as President, 1page, 7"" x 8.75"" on White House letterhead, Washington, June 26, 1912 to ?Dear Mr. Glaser? regretting his inability ?... to be present at the Ratification Banquet ..."" Light soiling, usual folds, else very good condition. Taft writes in full: ""I deeply regret my inability to be present at the Ratification Banquet on Saturday Evening next. It would be a great pleasure to rejoice with you and my many friends over the recent victory for constitutional government that was won at Chicago. I am very hopeful of the result in November, but whatever happens we have fought a good fight for the country?s sake already and have won.? Only days before Taft wrote to Glaser, the Republican National Convention had nominated him to run for a second term as President. Taft?s victory in Chicago was marred by the defection of Theodore Roosevelt, who challenged Taft for the nomination. Roosevelt had come to the convention holding the majority of delegates chosen in the primaries, but Taft managed to secure most of the uncommitted delegates to secure the Republican nod. In protest, Roosevelt, bolted from the party to run as the independent ?Bull Moose.? In the ensuing general election, Taft and Roosevelt split the Republican vote allowing Woodrow Wilson?s victory in November. Taft was a champion of the Sixteenth Amendment which granted Congress the right to enact a federal income tax: hence his reference to a ?Ratification Banquet."" Taft proposed the amendment on June 16, 1909 in an address to Congress in which he requested passage of a 2% federal income tax on corporations, together with the amendment that would give it constitutional legitimacy. The amendment, which was characterized by its opponents as an attack on states' rights, took nearly four years to pass. At the time of Taft?s writing, only 33 states had approved the amendment, and 3 were still needed to secure ratification. Ratification came on February 3, 1913, when Delaware approved the measure. Including this letter only 7 ALsS of Taft as President have appeared at public auction over the last 40 years, and only 4 of those were accomplished on a single page. This letter last sold individually at Sotheby's in 1977."

Upper wrapper slightly browned and stained, professionally repaired; lower lacking. Minor repairs to edges of final leaf.. First Edition, later issue. Rufer (Engl.) pp. 78-79. Ringer p. 311. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 37-38. The piano-vocal score, prepared by Alban Berg, first appeared in 1913 (U.E. 3696). An engraved full score in large format, including a number of corrections, was published in 1920 (U.E. 6300). First performed in Vienna on February 23, 1913, with Franz Schreker conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Choir and the Wiener Konzartvereinsorches Fritz Soot (1878-1965) was a German tenor. After singing a minor part at the world premiere of Strauss's Elektra (1909), he emerged as a leading singer in the 1910s. He took major parts in operas then new, including Mephistopheles in Busoni's Doktor Faust and the Tambourmajor in Berg's Wozzeck. He performed Schoenberg as early as 1913 (Vossische Zeitung, Berlin, November 17, 1913), and was considered for the part of Waldemar at the world premiere of the Gurrelieder (Schoenberg's letter to Soot of November 18, 1913). It is not known whether he sang the part on a later occasion. Richard Kraus (1902-1978), a German conductor, spent his entire career in his native country; in 1927, he took his first appointment in Kassel. "In March 1900 Schoenberg began setting Jens Peter Jacobsen's Gurre-Lieder as a song cycle for voice and piano, for entry in a competition... However, Schoenberg soon saw wider possibilities in the text... He therefore decided to connect the songs he had already composed (those in the first two parts of the finished work) with symphonic interludes and set the whole poem as a vast cantata employing several soloists and a huge chorus and orchestra. The work depicts the love of King Waldemar and Tove under the Tristanesque imminence of death, Waldemar's blasphemous defiance of God after Tove's death, the nightly ride at the head of a ghostly retinue to which the king's restless spirit is subsequently condemned, and its dismissal by the summer wind at the approach of day. Schoenberg encompassed all this in a series of tableaux of extraordinary magnificence." O. W. Neighbour in Grove online The Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885) wrote his Gurresange in 1871. The German translation is by Robert Franz Arnold (1872-1938).
