Autograph letter signed "P Mascagni" to an unidentified impresario in Vienna, addressed "Mio Caro."

2 pp. Quarto. Dated Rome, October 8, [1]908. On stationery with "Corso Vitt. Eman. 154. Telefono Interprov. 458. Per telegrammi: Mascagni, Roma" printed in red at upper left. In Italian (with translation). Mascagni responds to a proposal to write a "true and authentic" operetta. He likes the idea, but would encounter difficulties "of the moral-artistic order," and especially with his publishers, Choudens and Sonzogno. As indicated by his use of "tu," Mascagni and his correspondent were on familiar terms. "But there is still a material difficulty, represented in my contracts with the publishers Sonzogno in Milan and Choudens in Paris, who will not want to adjust [their contracts] if they knew I worked for an impresario from Vienna before having delivered (as per contract) the operas that I must write for them... As you've seen I haven't spoken of monetary interests... but profits have never been a difficulty for the closing of my [business] deals." Slightly worn; creased at folds. Together with: A postcard photograph of 5 gentlemen on a street corner dated Paris 1911 on mount: Mascagni, the music publisher Edoardo Sonzogno, the writer Gabriele d'Annunzio and two unidentified others. Mascagni, distinguished as both a composer and conductor, is perhaps best-known for his opera Cavalleria rusticana, which "was enormously successful from its first performance at the Costanzi in Rome in 1890. From then on Mascagni spent the rest of his long career treating a wide variety of subjects. His next opera, L'amico Fritz (1891), consolidated his success with Roman audiences, and revealed his lyrical vein. This fluent rustic comedy was successful particularly because melodic vitality - the outstanding merit of Cavalleria - was combined with a more elegant harmonic idiom." By the time this letter was written, Mascagni had also garnered considerable acclaim in Vienna, Paris, and London. Michele Girardi in Grove Music Online.

Frontispiece with tissue guard, pictorial title page, and 11 plates, all by Bedford. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper. The stage play itself was not published until 1928. Originally published in the same year in the UK.

Muzsikaszo [The Sound of Music]. Regeny dalban [Romantic Songs]

Budapest: Petofi-Tarsagag Kiadasa [Petofi Publishing House], n.d. (1911). First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. Large 4to. (370 x 287 mm). 1 f. (Ex Libris), title-page, 43 ff. 22 plates and 22 full-paged illustrations, of which 16 are color and 16 tipped-in, partly on gold and multi-coloured paper, plus 10 multi-coloured vignettes, initials and text illustrations. Original publisher's Art Deco binding designed by Arpad Basch: white leatherette over (wooden?) boards, gilt and multi-colour embossed cover illustration and spine, multi-colour illustrated end papers also designed by Arpad Basch. Binding a little dust-soiled, some pages with minor foxing. Hungarian Art Nouveau Salesman's-Dummy, an extraordinary artifact designed by Árpád Basch (1873-1944) for a publication of traditional Hungarian folk songs. Not surprisingly, the present volume combines Art Nouveau elements with Hungarian nationalist art. No doubt created for potential subscribers, the present volume contains song texts printed with decorative typeface, musical scores with ornamental vignettes and surrounding illustrations. The volume is profusely illustrated with color reproductions of paintings and drawings by notable contemporary Hungarian artists including Gyula Benczúr, István Bosznay, Gyu la Éder, Sándor Endrey, Gyula Háry, Ferencz Innocent, Gyula Istvánffy, Béla Juszkó, Nándor Kátona, Bertalan Karlovszky, L. Kézdi-Kovács, Endre Komáromi-Kacz, Tihamér Margitay, Vilmos Nagy, Antal Neogrády, Sándor Nyilassi, János Pentelei Molnár, Húgo Poll, Imre Revész, Gyula Stetka, Artúr Tölgyessy, Ákos Tolnay, Géza Udvary, Ignácz Uváry, Zsigmond Vajda, Géza Vastagh, and finally the designer of the book, the painter Árpád Basch (1873-1944), a Hungarian Jew who was killed by the Nazis, and whose work as a graphic artist merits more critical attention. Basch designed not only the binding and color-printed endleaves, but the large Ex-libris which precedes the title-page; the designs on fols. 1, 19, 30, 165, 69 (here misbound); the color printed illustration opposite p. 245; and likely the title-page itself plus assorted vignettes. The present volume was elegantly bound by the renown Budapest bookbinder Gottermayer (name blind-stamped on lower cover) and also incorporates some paper patterns for the forthcoming book edition. Anticipating the extended contents of the published work, the entire elaborately rendered spine is attached by means of a hinge on the lower cover (a useful feature as the present volume is in fact a vehicle of sale). Another ingenious design is the hinge on the first blank endleaf. A particularly rare and beautiful Hungarian Salesman's-Dummy, the likes of which we have never seen, providing graphic evidence of the high standard of quality among Budapest's leading book artists at that time.

This very rare memoir by Charles Blanchot was aide-de-camp to General Bazaine, Supreme Commander of French Forces in Mexico during Mexico's Second Empire. There is so much in here that has never seen light in either Spanish or English, for instance: the powerful if behind-the-scenes role of Doña Juliana de Gómez Pedraza, widow of Manuel Gómez Pedraza, and the vicious if, as Blanchot suggests, unfounded rumors circulating in Mexico City about Bazaine in 1866-7. Blanchot, who married an American of French origin in Mexico City, also offers a detailed and lively portrait of Mexico City society at the time.Condition:First signature of volume one detached with some edge wear along the fore-edges, title to volume two detached, binding edges and hinges rubbed, spines darkened. A good copy of a very rare and scarce work.

Borst A1.11.b, A2.12.c, A3.6.b, A4.6.b, and A5.6.b Fine ¶ The direct literary results of Thoreau's stay at Walden Pond were the essay "Resistance to Civil Government" (1849), inspired by a night in the Concord jail (the result of not having paid his taxes as a protest against government policies) and early drafts of A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849) and Walden (1854). After A Week failed to sell, Thoreau began revising Walden, taking it through seven major drafts before finally publishing it seven years later to modest sales and mostly favorable reviews. Two more trips to the Maine Woods (1853 and 1857) and several excursions to Cape Cod (1849, 1855, and 1857). provided fodder for the essays collected into two posthumous books, The Maine Woods (1864) and Cape Cod (1865). Clifton Johnson (1865-1940) was a folklorist, illustrator, photographer, and important literary figure with some 125 published books and countless magazine and newspaper articles to his credit. A friend of William Dean Howells and John Burroughs, he was an acquaintance of many other late 19th and early 20th century authors and editors.         The New Inferno - With sixteen Drawings by Vernon Hill.

John Lane - The Bodley Head,, 1911. Limited Edition. London / New York, John Lane - The Bodley Head, 1911. Quarto. Frontispiece, 145 pages with XVI full page illustrations. Original, illustrated Hardcover. One of only 320 copies printed. Good condition with some stronger signs of external wear. Private inscription on front free endpaper. Vernon Hill (1887?1972), born in Halifax, Yorkshire, England, was a sculptor, lithographer, illustrator and draughtsman. He began his work in print-making and lithography, and branched out into other artistic forms, such as sculpture. He illustrated several works and created etchings. His more notable works were commissions from Sir Edward Maufe for interior and exterior architectural sculptures on Maufe's buildings, including Guildford Cathedral, the Runnymede Memorial and several churches. He died in 1972.nVernon Hill was born in 1887 in Halifax, Yorkshire. He began formal training in print-making at an early age; at the age 13 he was apprenticed to a lithographer. In about 1908, at the age of 21, Hill moved to London and took up poster illustration, working under John Hassall, a poster designer and illustrator. nFrom 1909 to 1914 Hill received commissions for work as an illustrator on various projects. He created Art Nouveau illustrations for Stephen Phillips' The New Inferno in 1911 and for Richard Pearse Chope's Ballads Weird and Wonderful the following year. In 1912 one of his works was exhibited at the Royal Academy. His etchings were described by Campbell Fine Art as follows:nn "The distinctive allegorical etchings of Vernon Hill are all now scarce. His highly evocative work appears to have evolved entirely independently from the trends of his time, although overtones of the mysticism which so influenced Frederick Carter and Austin Osman Spare can be traced in some of his works."nnHis most notable work as a sculptor is to be seen on various buildings by Sir Edward Maufe, who regularly commissioned Hill.nSome of Hill's finest work can be seen at Guildford Cathedral in Guildford, Surrey. Apart from the reliefs on the south door entrance he carved the angels on the sedilia inside the cathedral, as well as the tongues of flame on the pulpit and lectern. He also carved the arms of Bishop Greig over the inside of the sacristy door and the figure of Saint Ursula over the inside of St Ursula?s Porch.nnAt the east door of the south porch (on either side of the central buttress pier in the south transept) are two magnificent bronze doors set under two arches which feature Vernon Hill?s reliefs. These are depictions of various occupations, of both men and women. The men?s occupations are on the right-hand door and include sowing, woodcutting, fishing, hunting, shepherding and ploughing; on the left-hand door are depicted women's traditional occupations including milking, spinning, and teaching.         Stories from Hans Andersen with Illustrations by Edmund Dulac (Signed Limited Edition)

This Edition de Luxe is limited to Seven Hundred and Fifty copies signed by the Artist, and numbered, of which this is No. 48. There are 28 tipped-in colour plates as called for. This is a lovely clean copy internally, except for browning to endpapers and page edges, and a 1917 presentation inscription (Prize for Music & Reading) to verso of limitation page. Sadly the publisher's white vellum binding is not so good, hence the greatly reduced price, The boards are warped, soiled and spotted with some ink marks, and the silk ties are missing. A not-to-be-missed opportunity to obtain this exquisitely illustrated edition of Hans Andersen's stories at an affordable price. As the contents are fine, this is a prime candidate for a bespoke rebind; this can be arranged if required, please get in touch to discuss.

        Ethan Frome

New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1911 First Issue, with "wearily" unbroken on penultimate line p.135 and top edge gilt. Small 8vo: [6],195,[5, four of which advertisements]pp. Publisher's crimson cloth, spine and upper board stamped gilt, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, title page in red and black. A superb copy, bright, square and tight. Garrison A 19.I.a. Johnson, High Spots, pp 76-77. Auchincloss, The Edith Wharton Reader, p. 21. Fine ¶By 1910, Teddy Wharton's mental health was fast deteriorating, and his embezzlement of money from Edith's trust fund initiated the end of the Whartons' marriage, as well as Edith's American life. She leased an apartment on the Left Bank, in Paris, where she would remain until 1920. The Mount, her beloved Berkshires retreat, was sold in 1911, and "henceforth her life would be wholly a European one. . . It is somehow fitting that [Edith Frome], her frosty New England tragedy of a damaged New England farmer devastatingly crippled physically and emotionally by a disastrous love-affair, coincided with Wharton's own sundering of bonds to that same landscape and to a now-hopeless marriage which formally ended in 1913." (Literary Encyclopedia) "[I]t is surely among her best. When I think of it [Ethan Frome], I visualize a small painting, perfectly executed to the last detail." (Auchincloss) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
