THE CELESTIAL OMNIBUS and other Stories.

London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd. 1911 - E. M. Forster. THE CELESTIAL OMNIBUS and other Stories. London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd., 1911. This is a fine copy of Forster's fifth book, and first collection of stories. Contains: "The Story of a Panic," "The Other Side of the Hedge," "The Celestial Omnibus," "Other Kingdom," "The Curate's Friend," and "The Road from Colonus." This is a fine copy in light brown cloth with nice bright gilt lettering and design on the front panel and somewhat less so on the spine. In front and back there are pale grey end-papers designed by Roger Fry. 164 pages followed by 4 pages of publisher's advertisements. There were only 1,000 copies printed of this first issue, incidently, which is fewer than for any of his first four books. Forster's bibliographer, B. J. Kirkpatrick does not mention the presence of a dust jacket for this first issue, although he does for each of the previous four books. We have never seen this title offered for sale with a dust jacket (but neither have we seen any of the earlier books offered with a dust jacket even though Kirkpatrick describes a dust jacket for each of them.) As this is the first of Forster's book printed by Sidgwick & Jackson, we will therefore risk stating that there was no jacket. There is an ownership monogram in ink on the verso of the front blank, dated 4th July 1911, that we interpret as WSE, although we have not been able to identify it. This is an early ownership signature since the book was published on 11th May. There are no other markings in the text. [Kirkpatrick A5] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA: A DICTIONARY OF ARTS, SCIENCES, LITERATURE AND GENERAL INFORMATION (ELEVENTH EDITION, 28 VOLUMES PLUS INDEX VOLUME); DELUXE EDITION, LIMP LEATHER COVERS

New York: Published by the Encyclopaedia Britannica Company, and printed at the University Press in Cambridge, England, 1911. Eleventh Edition. HARDCOVER. Very Good Minus. CONDITION: Volumes show minor edge-and corner- wear. Pages are of fine, thin India paper, and as is typical when diving to the authoritative set of tomes in order to prove a point, we see a crease or wrinkle to one or more of the first few pages. Some front free endapers foxed, stained and/or wrinkled. While there is some rubbing and or fading to some of the spines, overall the leather is in remarkably good shape. Index Volume is red cloth. The Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica represented "in an entirely new and original form a fresh survey of the whole field of human thought and achievement, written by some 1500 eminent specialists drawn from nearly every country of the civilized world, incorporating the results of research and the progress of events up to the middle of 1910." Essentially this work must be thought of as something akin to the Google of today -- massively comprehensive collaboration of the cream of science, art, literature and general information as could be gathered and synthesized century past but that of a century past, with none of the conjecture, hot air, specious claims, conflation of fact with myth, selective target marketing, etc. These volumes represent the first year the entire encyclopedia was issued as a whole ("so as to give an organic unity to the whole work.") and the last year, before the set began, some say, to be gradually "dumbed-down", reduced to its latter-century status as a lower common-denominator, an agglomeration of commonly useful information, widely acknowledged by serious researchers to have de-volved to a shadow of its former self in terms of comprehensiveness, depth, excellence of and commitment to the highest-quality scholarship, source and material. From 1911 onward we see the steady decline of this once-magnificent work of universal reference to the status of obligatory gift for our 12-year olds, that they may bail themselves out of actual thinking. This situation was not so much the result of conscious publisher decision (although there were indeed cost-cutting measures on the table), as it was the availability of world-class scholars. "Later editions reflect the tendency to court public favor by accepting the claims and beliefs of various religious sects. This edition did not consult with religious groups in preparing its articles. The arrangement of articles tended to make the Eleventh Edition a practical reference work for layman rather than an erudite work largely for scholars and educators. The index was a 'model of well-ordered compactness,' and was designed primarily to aid the general reader. It is perhaps the most useful of all books of reference, and represents the combination of learning, research, co-operation and organization in a higher degree than any other of the monumental works of literature and science." After the editors issued the Twelfth Edition (which differed from the Eleventh Edition by the addition of two volumes and an index) they wrote: "neither the minds nor the wills that are required for such an undertaking are any longer obtainable in any corresponding degree, nor probably can they be again for years to come... A shifting of interest has taken place among writers of the academic type, so that there is a disinclination to make the exertion needed for entering anew into their old subjects -- a necessary condition for just that stimulating, vital presentation of old issues in the light of all the accumulated knowledge about them, which was so valuable a feature of the Eleventh Edition. This edition is classically beautiful, -- large (9" x 11 3/4") of full (limp) leather covers, in a color which could most safely be called black, but some of whose volumes still range to the richest dark green. In the center of each page, is the embossed seal of the University at Cambridge, England, comprised of a cross in the center and a lion in each corner. A triple-ruled bright gilt design borders the fronts of each volume of the encyclopaedia proper, with lettering across the top that identifies the book as "Encyclopaedia Britannica Eleventh Edition" and across the bottom, the volume number and the beginning and ending three-alphabetic letters which define the range of that particular volume. This design repeats on the back boards as well. All top edges are gilt, as is the lettering on the spines. The endpapers are a pattern consisting of the seals of each of the colleges which comprise the University at Cambridge, and their year of founding. The final volume, XXIX, is hardcover, cloth-covered -- i.e., NOT leather like the other 28 volumes, fully-tabbed, with recent reinforcement by a professional book conservator) Scarce set. Additional carriage may be solicited. Gorgeous.

It was Nietzsche's own favorite and has proved to be his most popular. His solution lies in the idea of eternal recurrence, which he calls 'the highest formula of affirmation that can ever be attained."         THE TALE OF TIMMY TIPTOES

1911. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1911. Original dark green paper boards with arched pictorial onlay. First Edition of these adventures of Timmy Tiptoes (and his wife Goody), grey squirrels trying to get nuts collected and stored up for the oncoming winter. Timmy is wrongly accused of stealing other squirrels' nuts and is thrown through a tree-hole into his and Goody's nut storehouse -- where he gets sidetracked and eats so many of the nuts that he becomes too fat to get out. The presence of chipmunks and a bear in this tale have led to speculation that the author had American children in mind when she wrote and illustrated this book.~Customers could buy TIMMY TIPTOES in either light brown or dark green paper boards, priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth, at 1/6. This copy is in dark green boards, and is near-fine (scarcely any external wear, minor cracking at one end of the front endpaper -- which bears an "Xmas /11" inscription). This is remarkable condition for fragile paper-covered boards intended for children's use. Linder pp 208-209 and p. 429; Quinby 20.

My First Summer in the Sierra.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1911. First edition. Octavo, original green cloth, stamped in gilt, top edge gilt. Illustrated with gravure plates from photographs by Herbert W. Gleason, printed tissue guards; illustrated in the text from sketches made by Muir. In fine condition. A very nice example. At age 72, John Muir began to compile his notes for this book, of which Kimes states, "With the skillful editing of his mature years, he retains the refreshing spontaneity and enthusiasm of his youthful experiences and observations, interspersed as they are with his lyrical and oft-times mystical reflections. Thus, this book, published near the apex of his career, reaps the competence of age while capturing the essence of youth, and becomes, we believe, his finest book" Kimes 299; BAL 14765. "Muir's book continues to inspire... it stands among the enduring classics of environmental literature" (Gregory McNamee).

Der Zauberer von Rom. Roman in neun Büchern. 9 in 5 Bdn.

Zus. Beethoven-Cyclus - INCLUDING PERFORMANCES BY CASALS & FLESCH

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Rare 1911 poster lithograph, heightened with gold, announcing a number of concerts. Measures 48.5 x 16 cms. Foxing down the margins, a few creases and small areas of chipping around the edges, mounted to rigid backing, overall a very good example of this scarce poster. <br>The conductor Henri Viotta had opened the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in 1888 and led the Residence Orchestra in the Hague from 1903.  In 1911, this orchestra played all the Beethoven symphonies in the present series, which also included performances by Pablo Casals, Carl Flesch, Conrad Ansorge and other notable singers and soloists.   "Willem Hutschenruyter, scion of  a family of musicians and administrator of the Concertgebouw, had joined the orchestra in The Hague after a row with Mengelberg.  He promoted a campaign for the construction of a Beethoven House, to a design by Berlage, in the dunes at Bloemendaal.  A concert hall was to be built there, where people could experience the consecration of art in a combination of Beethoven's music and the ambience of a temple of the arts."  (Williem Frijhoff, Marijke Spies, "Dutch Culture in a European Perspective: 1900, the age of bourgeois culture," p. 473)

        Oscar Wilde and His Mother.

London: Everett & Co., LTD., , 1911 . A Memoir. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, blind-tooled fillet border to covers, gilt fillet to spine ends, gilt flower to front board. Pencil portrait of Oscar Wilde to frontspiece. Tissue guard intact. Anna Comtesse de Brémont's Armorial ownership bookplate to pastedown. Lightly bumped at corners, small stains to rear boards, edges lightly browned, contents clean throughout, a very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, one of the great figures of the English theatre, who became the most successful actor-manager of his time. Oscar Wilde said of Tree: "a charming fellow, and so clever: he models himself on me."; Anna de Brémont Comtesse was an old friend of Lady Wilde and claimed to share a "mysterious soul-sympathy" with Oscar. The inscription is dated "May 22nd 1911" and refers to Tree's position at His Majesty's Theatre, a managerial post he had maintained since 1897. The book also contains an inscription by the author referring to the fact that she reacquired the copy "at the sale of the library of Sir Herbert Tree in the autumn of 1921".

Svobodnaia Piesn': Sbornik Revoliutsionnykh Piesn; i Stikhotvorenii [=] Russian Songs of Freedom

Max N. Maisel, New York 1911 - A compilation of Russian "songs of freedom" and revolutionary poems by various authors. Some of the works included here are early printings of Ruzrushennyi Mol' ("The Ruined Pier"), by Grigorii Gershuni, a Russian revolutionary and a founder of the Socialist Revolutionary Party; and Maxim Gorky's Piesnia o Bureviestnikie ("The Song of the Stormy Petrel"). Undoubtedly, however, one of the most interesting poems is Fedorushka, here erroneously attributed to Leo Tolstoy. The poem was actually written in 1880 by Mikhail Rozengeim, for whose poetry the term "liberal accusation" was coined. Tolstoy, who disliked this particular poem, expressed great displeasure at the incorrect attribution. The mistake was most likely made by the publisher, Max N. Maisel, whose shop in the Lower East Side was frequented by many political and cultural radicals. E-book format only in OCLC as of October, 2014. First edition, 12mo (18.25cm.); contemporary black cloth, private paper spine label printed in manuscript; 159pp.; hinges weak, textblock shaken, page edges soiled, old crude tape repair to index page; Good.         ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (Superior Example of Macmillan's 1911 First Color Alice)

London: Macmillan, 1911. "Lewis Carroll" (Charles L[utwidge] Dodgson). ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. London: Macmillan & Co, 1911. With ninety-two illustrations by John Tenniel including sixteen in colour. First Edition, thus, in original publisher's red cloth decorated in gold. Macmillan, finally, after 45 years and hundreds of Alice printings, came out with this attractive FIRST COLOUR EDITION of both Alice stories. These larger format color illustrations are nothing short of superb and it's remarkable how few nice copies of this edition can be found in commerce. This example is Very Good indeed. The cloth is relatively fresh and remarkably unworn save for some unfortunate shelf wear to the bottom edge which is the reason the only reason we've not graded this superior example as Near Fine. The internal contents are fine, the plates are fine and unfoxed. There is a tiny bit of browning to the endpapers else as nice a copy of the first color Alice as we've seen in a long while. First Edition Thus. Decorative Boards. Very Good. Illus. by John Tenniel.
