Ayot St. Lawrence or London. 1 Feb. 1911.. Ayot St. Lawrence or London. 1 Feb. 1911.. One page, ca. 100 words, in ink, on verso of imprinted dual address lettercard. Postally used, a few smudges, one corner creased, else very good. Shaw writes to Dublin-born actress Lucy Carr Shaw: "All this rigmarole about Peter being in my debt is rubbish, as she very well knows ... as to investing in geniuses, I shall make my own selection if I ever go into that department of finance. Middle-aged ex- bandsmen, as I vaguely gather W.B. to be, are not in my line: I should prefer at least vivandière ... She is quite right to adopt an orphan; but he will have to run away if he is really a genius: her first commandment is 'Thou shall have no other goddess but me'; and a public artist must belong to everybody.         Studier over Metallernes Elektrontheori. Afhandling for den Filosofiske Doktorgrad. (Researches on the electron theory of metals).

Copenhagen, Thaning & Appel, 1911. Royal 8vo. Orig. printed wrappers. A small nick to top of backstrip. Very faint discolouring to edge of frontcover. (8),120 pp. With Bohr's manuscript dedication on front wrapper: "Hr. Kultusminister J. Appel/ ærbødigst fra/ Forfatteren" (Mr. Minister of Culture J. Appel, most respectfully from the Author).. First edition, presentation-copy, of Bohr's doctoral dissertation, in which the Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem is presented for the first time. It is likely that it is the present work that pushed Bohr into the mysteries of quantum physics and the 1913 development of his theory of the hydrogen atom. The dissertation is inscribed to the Danish minister of Culture Jacob Appel (1866-1931), who was minister in two periods (1910-13 and 1920-24).What is known now as the Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem is significant in determining that magnetism in solids is solely a quantum mechanical effect, meaning that classical physics cannot account for such things as paramagnetism, diamagnetism and ferromagnetism. The conclusions of his theory were to prove determinative for the further development of modern physics. Van Vleck described Bohr's thesis as "perhaps the most deflationary publication of all time,"( van Vleck, J. H. (1992). "Quantum mechanics: The key to understanding magnetism (Nobel lecture, 8 December 1977". In Lundqvist, Stig. Nobel Lectures in Physics 1971-1980.), and indeed Bohr's conclusion in the thesis: "It does not seem possible at the present stage of the development of the electron theory to explain the magnetic properties of bodies from this theory" indicates an important shift in his comprehension of classical physics. "His doctor's thesis had pushed him to the outer frontier of classical physics. In 1912 he wrote an additional brief note on the subject, then left it alone. It could be that these experiences encouraged him to push into areas beyond, into the mysteries of quantum physics, as he was soon to do." (Pais, Niels Bohr's Times, p. 111). Bohr's dissertation was written in Danish and thus none of the important physicists of the period were able to read it. Bohr's theorem was later re-discovered by Hendrika Johanna van Leeuwen, in her doctoral thesis (1919), and 13 years later, in 1932, van Vleck formalized and expanded upon Bohr's initial theorem. Bohr's doctorial dissertation was a purely theoretical work that again exhibited a mastery of the vast subject he had chosen, the electron theory of metals. This theory, which pictures the metallic state as a gas of electrons moving more or less freely in the potential created by the positively charged atoms disposed in a regular lattice, accounted qualitatively for the most varied properties of metals; but it ran into many difficulties as soon as a quantitative treatment was attempted on the basis of then accepted principles of classical electrodynamics. In order to shed light on the nature of these difficulties, Bohr developed general methods allowing him to derive the main features of the phenomena from the fundamental assumptions in a very direct way. He could thus clearly exhibit the fundamental nature of the failures of the theory, which were in fact attributed to an insufficiency of the classical principles themselves. Thus, he showed that the magnetic properties of the metals could in no way be derived from a consistent application of these principles. The rigor of his analysis gave him, at this early stage, the firm conviction of the necessity of a radical departure from classical electrodynamics for the description of atomic phenomena. (DSB).         Peter & Wendy

Hodder and Stoughton, London 1911 - HARDBACK - A fine book with the pictoral frontispiece, and an additional eleven black and white illustrations by F.D. Bedford. The green boards are fresh, and the gilt illustration to the front panel, and to the spine are fine and unfaded. The book is tightly bound with sharp spine tips and corners. ( there is a small bump to the bottom corner of the front board, but the corner is still sharp ) Internally, the pages are very clean and white, with just the odd foxing spot throughout the text and a little dustiness to the top page block. The dust wrapper is in fine condition for its age. There is very minor chipping to the spine tips and to the corners of the front and rear flap folds. There is fading to the spine, but the gilt is fresh and un faded to the front board. In summary, a superb book in its original first issue dust wrapper which is in excellent condition for its age, especially as the wrapper is very thin and notoriously fragile. Please view the numerous scans for an indication as to the titles overall condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

A Brief Historical Memoir of Delhi and Guide to Points of Interest Together With the Official Programme in Detail of the Imperial Coronation Durbar of 1911, With Sketch Maps, Plans, and Illustrations

Office of the Superintendent, Government Printing, Bengal [1911], Calcutta - Original blind- and gilt-stamped soft morocco with gold lettering on spine. Splendid mounted photographic portraits of the King and Queen of England after the title (size of each portrait 5 3/4" x 3 1/2"). Decorative initials. The Delhi Durbar meaning "Court of Delhi", was a mass assembly at Coronation Park, Delhi, India, to mark the coronation of a King and Queen of the United Kingdom. Also known as the Imperial Durbar, it was held three times, in 1877, 1903, and 1911, at the height of the British Empire. This work, published in anticipation of the 1911 Durbar (which was the only one attended by the sovereign, who was George V) contains several seating plans and charts, and is splendidly illustrated with16 tipped in b/w platinum prints by Johnston & Hoffmann studios, and others (average size of images 6" x 4 1/2" when one image per plate, or 6" x 2" when 2 or 3 images per plate). Starting at page 133 is a list of Commanders, Staffs, and Troops at the Durbar. This copy belonged to W. F. Reynolds who was attending the ceremony as a guest, as indicated in his sporadic annotations in pencil. Minor shelf wear. Binding and interior in overall very good condition.         La Comedia del divino Dante Alighieri da Firenze con la esposizione di Giuseppe Landino Passerini da Cortona.

In Firenze. Apresso L. S. Olschki, 1911. 3 p.l., [v]-xl, [1], 524 p., 1 l.; 43.5 cm. Reproduces 101 facsimiles of woodcuts in the Venice, 1491 edition. A magnificent effort of book production to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the Divine Comedy. Gabriele d'Annunzio was to have contributed a life of Dante. He never completed it, so his 'Vita' was replaced by an earlier, already published essay on Dante. Everything else is first-rate. The handmade paper was commissioned for this edition, which was printed in 300 copies. (this is number 41). The binding is leather over wooden boards with iron clasps, bosses, and a bust of Dante (in six copies, one of which is in the Pierpont Morgan Library, the clasps, bosses, etc. are of silver). In this copy the previous owner, a Dante scholar, began annotating on the title-page, the beautiful title-page. He made two notes, then came to his senses (or someone beat him senseless). The NUC (132: 646: ND0037108) records five copies: DLC, CU, FU, DCU, MH. We have had a clamshell box made for it by James DiMarcantonio, Hope Bindery & Box Company. The condition is generally excellent; there is some scuffing, a few of the nails for the ironwork have come out. We had the leather of the clasps replaced. One of the great editions of Dante. OB1000.
