Cable, George W.
Northampton, MA, 1910. Two-thirds of a page, on recto of quarto sheet of light weight typing paper, with blindstamped letterhead in corner. Folds from mailing, recipients dated receipt stamp, a few tiny breaks at edges, else very good. To "Dear Gus Thomas" (i.e. American playwright Augustus Thomas, at the time the President of The Lambs Theatrical Club), discussing prospects for his dramatization of KINCAID'S BATTERY: "I told you J. I. C. Clarke had the ... play to read. I now have his letter and send you a copy of its third page; the other two are even more unfavorable. In answer to his closing implication that he would like to consider the play further after reading the book, I have asked him to retain it until I can determine what next step is best ... You know how glad I should be if you should care to look at it yourself, and how twice and thrice as glad if you could contemplate any sort of Bonnie Briar Bush arrangement ...." He discusses further the possibility of Thomas connecting him with reliable parties to assist in the matter, and details a request he has received to agree to a dramatization of "Posson Jone and Pere Raphael." He concludes: "I shall be highly pleased to hear from you and am always --- Yours truly, G.W. Cable."

Cossmann, Paul Nikolaus, Schriftsteller (1869-1942).
1910. 3½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. WOMEN] Anonymous
Small, Maynard & Co, Boston, 1910. A scarce American feminist novel, originally published (also anonymously) in the American Magazine for July, 1909. A contemporary reviewer noted of this work: "the writer passes from idealizing a lover whom she fancies she understands, to a state of mind in which her strongest feelings are repulsion for him and determination that their son shall never grow up to be 'like him and to dwarf some woman's life and his own.' . the situation described is so frequently observed that one can but applaud the writer's wisdom in omitting her name from the title-page." Our attempts to attribute authorship have indeed proved fruitless. In its narrative arc progressing from complacency to disgust, the book bears a tantalizing resemblance to Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wall Paper," published ten years earlier. In any case, a quite scarce work; absent from commerce; OCLC locates eleven copies only; not in Smith Collection. SMITH (American Fiction 1901-1925), C-663. 12mo. Original red cloth boards; gilt titles; 64pp. Slight flaking to cover gilt; contemporary gift inscription; Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
