' Written by A Vayter (also Waiter; pseudonym of Ayzik Meyer Devenishski; ca. 1878–1919) ; “Yiddish writer, political activist, and cultural figure. Born in a shtetl in the Vilna region to a strictly observant family that operated a tavern, Ayzik Meyer Devenishski received a traditional Jewish education. In his youth, he became familiar with Haskalah literature, and later studied Russian and Polish literature and the works of radical and revolutionary thinkers. Devenishski left the traditional world and joined the Bund at the time of its inception. He was active in Kovno, Minsk, and Vilna under his party pseudonym “Comrade Aron, ” and endeavored to strengthen the national elements of the Bund platform. Devenishski was arrested several times and exiled to Siberia. When his term of exile was over, Devenishski settled in Vilna in 1905, where he contributed to the local Russian press. He played a central role in the revolutionary events of 1905 in Vilna. In 1906, he began his career as a Yiddish writer with a short story under his new pseudonym, A. Vayter, and from then on his literary work was increasingly important to him. Vayter's transition from political to cultural activities is seen as emblematic of significant circles of the Jewish intelligentsia after the failure of the first Russian Revolution. Along with Shmuel Niger and Shemaryahu Gorelik, Vayter coedited the pioneering journal Literarishe monatshriftn (Lit … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Nora May French (1881 – November 13, 1907) was a California poet and member of the bohemian literary circles of the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club which flourished after the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906." "She quickly made her place within bohemian intellectual circles and endured several unhappy affairs. In 1907 she joined George Sterling and his wife at their home in Carmel, but was unable to overcome her problems. French grew more depressed and on Monday November 11, tried to kill herself unsuccessfully with a gunshot to the head. The bullet took off a lock of her hair, but Nora missed her mark due to her shaky hand. GUINEY, Louise Imogen (1861 - 1920)
1 page, 3 x 5 inches, consisting of 16 lines and more than one 170 words, not dated but certainly from 1910, relaying accounts of her mental well-being and her attempt at viewing Haley's Comet, in full: "Thank you so much for calling, and I do wish I hadn't missed you! I came under escort straight out to this nice little sanitarium, to stay a week and be pawed and petted; then on the first of February I hope to be mustered out, and to return to my lair on Pinckney Street. My spirits rise to your remark about loathing to be prudent! But I would willingly see others so, wouldn't you? My mother, I am glad to say, is almost well. My benighted better eye has not yet beheld the Comet: but I now lie in wait for it, as soon as these clouds scatter. You see, your enthusiasm has wrought good, as I needed reminding there were divers heavenly High Jinks which I have come near missing altogether. Please give Prof. Palmer my grateful greeting for his live letters, ever so welcome. With every best wish, you bonnie lass." Slight wrinkling with a half-inch tear at the top margin; otherwise in very good condition. Due to heavy collecting in recent years by university and historical institutions, Guiney is now considered very scarce in autographed letters signed. Popular American poet, essayist, and editor, born in Roxbury, Massachusetts. In 1901 she moved to Oxford, England to focus on her writing but soon began to suffer from bad health and was no longer able to create poetry. She died of a stroke at the age of 59. Rossetti, Christina. Harrison, Florence (illustrator).
London: Blackie & Son Limited, 1910. Thick 4to, xxiv, 369, [3] pp. Illustrated with 36 tipped in colour plates and 34 black and white plates by Florence Harrison. Original white buckram decorated in gilt, gilt top, front hinge cracking, very good. First edition with lovely late Art Nouveau illustrations. “Florence Susan Harrison was the second daughter of Captain Norwood Harrison and his wife Lucy. Their first daughter Edith died during early childhood and two younger brothers Arthur and Godfrey, were born later. The family were Anglicans and much of Florence's education must have been carried out by her closest family during long periods at sea with her parents. Between voyages, however, she attended a school run by a relative in Folkestone. Her first published illustrations appeared in Rhymes and Reasons (Blackie 1905) and the popularity of that book quickly led to a further commission entitled The Rhyme of a Run. Both of these books were aimed at the expanding children's market of the time. They were very well received : the Atheneum praised the "charming imagination in both verse and pictures".The following year Harrison received £100 (approximately £8500 at today's values) for a further collection of her verse entitled In the Fairy Ring. This was aimed at a more adult market and the Pall Mall Gazette commented "so excellent are the drawings that they earn Miss Harrison a very high place among the illustrators of children's books". In 1908 Blackie commissioned Harrison to illustrate a major gift book destined specifically for the adult market as part of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Herford, Oliver (1863-1935)
1910 - Herford, Oliver. Pencil, pen and ink, unsigned. 1 vols. 7-1/4 x 6 inches. This drawing was apparently intended for publication, as there are pencilled marginal instructions as to dimensions. Oliver Herford was known as both a poet and illustrator, as well as for his wit. Born in England, he moved with his family to the United States when he was six, but later attended schools in both countries, as well as in France. He had a long and outstanding career as a writer and illustrator for numerous magazines including "Life" and "Harper's Weekly." He also, between 1893 and 1931, wrote and illustrated approximately fifty books of "artistic nonesense." In addition to the humor of his published works, "Herford's oral humor was remembered as often as his verse. In his heyday he was called 'the most quoted man in America'" (Kunitz & Haycraft).
