GAMY (MARGUERITE MONTAUT).
Mabileau & Co, 1910.

(RADNOR, Jacob Pleydell-Bouverie, 6th Earl)
Four plates of floor plans of Longford Castle. 60 pp. 8vo, orig. tan printed wrappers. [London: Chiswick Press]; "To be Obtained from the Housekeeper, Longford Castle," 1910. "Third edition, edited and revised by William Barclay Squire, F.S.A."; this is the most complete record of the collection. Radnor (1868-1903), was a prominent Conservative politician and his mother Helen Matilda Chaplin (1846-1929) helped compile this catalogue. The collection began with the father-son pair of Sir Jacob de Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone (1694-1761), and William, 2nd Viscount and later 1st Earl of Radnor (1725-76). The former purchased more than 100 pictures, including works by Holbein, Moroni, and Poussin. Some of the paintings featured in this catalogue now reside in the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Poussin's The Adoration of the Golden Calf also went to the National Gallery in 1945, while his The Crossing of the Red Sea resides in the National Gallery of Victoria. William Barclay Squire (1855-1927), was an important scholar of music and a librarian. The catalogue lists 222 pictures, 104 family portraits, and 47 miniatures, which are all arranged by their location in Longford Castle. Most are described with biographical information on the subject or artist. There is an index of painters at the end. The floor plans show Longford Castle in 1678 and 1898, highlighting the added rooms and features. Fine copy. Inscription on title-page: "Cynthia, 18 June 1955.".

SMITH, E. BOYD) Smith, E. Boyd (illus)
New York.: G. P. Putnam's Sons.. 1910.. Full page color illustrations, unpaginated (28pp), 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches, color pictorial paper covered boards with cloth spine (hardbound). Covers scuffed, corners bumped, edges of spine rubbed, previous owner's name in ink to front paste-down, binding strengthened by 1/2 inch linen strips on a number of pages, several very short tears at margins. A doleful tale of Chicken World's life cycle; the Old Black Hen raises a brood that includes several ducks she incubates unknowingly. From May to December we track the chicks and ducks; the chicks at year's end "dream of Spring, which soon will come again, when they like other hens, will hatch out broods of chicks themselves." This dream is transformed to reality on the last page, which pictures a roast chicken on a platter with carving utensils prominently displayed. An absorbing read for the young depressive. .

Box of Curios P&P co. ca. 1910, Yokohama. First and only edition. Booklet: 13.5 x 8.5 cm / Map: 47 x 33 cm. Very good: very minor creasing. No tears. A rare little map of Yokohama made to give to tourists visiting Yokohama. Brett's Pharmacy was the largest foreign-staffed dispensary in Japan for English and American medicines in the early 20th. It was destroyed during the great earthquake of 1923. The map is well coloured and particularly well detailed. As it was a typical tourist item, many of these were thrown away or lost.

The Maremma region is an area of Italy bordering the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas. It comprises part of southwestern Tuscany - Maremma Livornese and Maremma Grossetana (the latter in the province of Grosseto) - and part of northern Lazio (in the province of Viterbo and Rome on the border of the region). It was traditionally populated by the Butteri, cattle breeders who until recently used horses with a distinctive style of saddle. Once unhealthy because of its many marshes, Maremma was drained under the fascist regime and repopulated with people from other Italian regions, notably the Veneto. Maremma is being promoted as a destination for agritourism. In the Maremma region various popular wines are produced,[which?] some of which have gained DOCG status.[which?] Maremma can be divided into many areas, each with its own characteristics and attractions. Alta Maremma (Upper Maremma) is the northern part of the Maremma region, on the border with the Province Siena. This area is characterised by the many picturesque hilltop villages (Pitigliano, Roccastrada, Roccatederighi, Sassofortino, Monte Massi, Massa Marittima, Cinigiano, Campagnatico, Pari), which remind of the hilltop towns of the Siena area. The heart of Maremma.[1] Grosseto can be considered the capital of Maremma. RACKHAM, Arthur.)
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1910. Octavo (164 x 108 mm). Quarter brown sheep, vellum covered boards, spine lettered in blind, two original pen-and-ink drawings by Rackham applied directly to the front cover, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, red silk page marker. Spine a little rubbed at extremities, a little spotting to rear cover. In excellent condition. This fine example of Rackham's work is a test piece by the artist, practicing his technique for drawing directly onto vellum, possibly in preparation for a private commission. The illustration features two unconnected design elements - vignettes drawn in black and coloured inks, each signed by Rackham with his initials, and very much in the style he used for the headpieces in the Haddon Hall library (1899-1903). The top scene depicts a delicately-tinted castle backed by billowing clouds enclosing a partially opened scroll, with marbled colour lightly applied, a spray of brambles to the right-hand side of the image, and two swallows in flight in the foreground, with Rackham's initials next to the left-hand swallow. The scroll was evidently designed to contain lettering, though it has been left blank here. The bottom image, situated at a right-hand angle, as if to enclose a portion of text, depicts a wood nymph entwined in a thorny spray of roses and brambles, with Rackham's initials worked into the foliage below the nymph. It is probable that Rackham purchased this plain vellum-bound book for this purpose while holidaying in the village of Walberswick, Suffolk, where he often stayed (this book was originally "acquired from … [Click Below for Full Description]

Russia, England, India, 1910. Oblong octavo. Black leather over paper boards measuring 14" x 9". A collection of 255 sepia toned photographs affixed to stiff black paper without captions. Various sizes ranging from 7" x 9" to 2.5" x 2.5". Very good with curled boards, creasing, and shallow chips. A vernacular photo album with photos taken circa 1910 of what appears to be various trips to Russia, England, and India. Throughout the album are images of stately homes, presumably in Britain, boat trips, and visits to an unnamed beach. There are also pictures of outdoor activities, such as garden parties, a photo of a black man playing badminton, and women walking through gardens as they're want to do. Among the images are snow frolicking and a shot of people posing by a car chassis. One group of pictures shows an event with people dressed in Greek costumes playing instruments. Toward the end of the book are what appear to be Russian and Indian towns, judging from the architecture, are photographed complete with mighty Eastern European beards. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

San Francisco: James H. Barry, 1910. 1st. Leather bound. First Edition. Large 8vo. iii, 176 pp. 2 color maps dated March, 1910 by J. H. Dockweiler, consulting engineer to the attorney for the city of San Francisco from 1904-1916 - one large folding map is titled "Map showing Location of Hetch Hetchy Valley and Yosemite Valley (Scenic Park) and Lake Elsinore in the Yosemite National Park." The second map (singled page) is titled "Map showing location of the Proposed Municipal Water District to be served from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir Site." Dockweiler: Report on the Domestic Sources of Water Supply and Report on the Tuolomne River source of Water Supply. Red leatherette with floral endpapers. Tape repairs to spine; chips to front edge; 2 restored short tears to folding map where affixed to inside rear cover; else a very good copy of an uncommon title (not in Cowan nor Rocq). Beginning in the 19th century, the Hetch Hetchy Valley was viewed as a potential source of drinking water for San Francisco. This interest generated a tremendous amount of controversy and resistance, in the early days led by the Sierra Club and its founder, John Muir who saw the Hetch Hetchy Valley as a prized natural resource calling it "one of Nature's rarest and most precious mountain temples". As early as 1890, the first proposal for damming Hetch Hetchy Valley was made by San Francisco Mayor James Phelan. Appeals and denials of appeals ensued. In 1908, the City of San Francisco filed a p … [Click Below for Full Description]

PHOTOGRAPHY - 20TH CENTURY
1910. [PHOTOGRAPHY - 20TH CENTURY] ORIGINAL PRESS PHOTOGRAPH - ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON NEW YORK CITY MAYOR WILLIAM JAY GAYNOR, 1910. American Press Association, event occurring August 6, 1910 (reverse of photo dated August 10). Silver gelatin print photograph, 6 9/16 x 8 1/2 inches. Small chip and slight creasing to bottom lower corner, faint impression to top from marking on reverse. The three men in the photo are framed from the torso up. The photograph shows the wounded Mayor Gaynor, who survived the attempt but died three years later from lingering effects, supported by two unidentified "friends." The reverse bears typed notes to the effect that the photo was taken by the American Press Association's photographer, unnamed, and that the photo was taken moments after Commissioner Edwards knocked the would-be assassin (a disgruntled former city employee) to the ground. Gaynor was aboard ship in New York Harbor, about to depart for a European vacation when the attempt occurred. He was shot at point blank range in the throat. The outlines of the Mayor's hat and coat, as well as the two men's faces, have been enhanced by hand, presumably for press reproduction.

Potter, Beatrix
London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1910. Original blue-grey paper-covered boards with hexagonal pictorial onlay. First Edition of Beatrix Potter's tale about a wood-mouse named Thomasina Tittlemouse. The tale tells of her attempts to keep her underground home neat and tidy in spite of various unexpected visitors ("friends" they were called in the manuscript: this was changed to "visitors" in the book, but even more appropriate would be "intruders"). These include bees, a beetle, a ladybug, a butterfly, a spider and of course the debonair toad Mr. Jackson. The manuscript also included three wood-lice, but Warne objected that such creatures did not belong in a children's book; so they are instead described as "three creepy-crawly people" in the book.~There were actually two printings during (and dated) 1910, but they are identical; the third was not until 1911. Customers were given the choice of buying MRS. TITTLEMOUSE in blue-grey or cream paper-covered boards priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth priced at 1/6. For this title the pictorial paste-down endpapers were revised to their present-day design, showing Mrs. Tittlemouse and a bee in the upper right corner of each paste-down.~This is a fine, attractive copy, with scarcely any wear at all (spine very slightly darkened). Linder pp 205-207 and p. 429; Quinby 18. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
