Alma-Tadema, Sir Lawrence
Misschien was het het gedicht ?The Voice of Spring? uit 1890 van schrijfster Mary Howitt, dat Alma-Tadema heeft doen inspireren dit werk te maken:Turn thine eyes to Earth and Godfor there the Spring has given;clothed the Earth, and cleared skies:for thy pleasure of thy food, pour thy soul in gratitude. Prijs: ? 3.150,- (incl. lijst).

BOEHRINGER, C.
Athen, ca. 1910. Original photograph, cabinetcard, albumen print, 16,4 x 10,6 cm. Constantine I (2 August [O.S. 21 July] 1868 - 11 January 1923) was King of Greece from 1913 to 1917 and from 1920 to 1922. He was commander-in-chief of the Hellenic Army during the unsuccessful Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and led the Greek forces during the successful Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, in which Greece expanded to include Thessaloniki, doubling in area and population. He succeeded to the throne of Greece on 18 March 1913, following his father's assassination. His disagreement with Eleftherios Venizelos over whether Greece should enter World War I led to the National Schism. Constantine forced Venizelos to resign twice, but in 1917 he left Greece, after threats of the Entente forces to bombard Athens; his second son, Alexander, became king. After Alexander's death, Venizelos' defeat in the 1920 legislative elections, and a plebiscite in favor of his return, Constantine was reinstated. He abdicated the throne for the second and last time in 1922, when Greece lost the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922, and was succeeded by his eldest son, George II. Constantine died in exile four months later, in Sicily. Born on 2 August 1868 in Athens, Constantine was the eldest son of King George I and Queen Olga of Greece. His birth was met with an immense wave of enthusiasm: the new heir apparent to the throne was the first Greek-born member of the family. As the ceremonial cannon on Lycabettus Hill fired the royal salute, huge crowds gathered outside the Palace shouting what they thought should rightfully … [Click Below for Full Description]

CARROLL, Lewis.) MACFARLANE, John (illus.)
London: Macmillan and Co. Ltd., [c.1910]. Sheet size: 82 x 60 cm Some very light creasing and a touch of marginal spotting, otherwise fresh and clean. Presented in a black wooden frame with UV glass. Colour lithographed linen-backed wall-poster First and only edition. The use of John Macfarlane is the only instance of Macmillan having licensed illustrations for Alice in Wonderland by an artist other than Tenniel. In its original format, the set of six was issued joined at the head as a kind of flipchart, most likely intended for classroom display. The posters could be mounted on an easel and the illustrations displayed one at a time while the class read through the book. The complete set is now rare: OCLC locates just one set, COPAC adds another at Oxford. Many must have been split up and varnished for hanging in the schoolroom: two individual prints in that condition were offered at auction in 1997. As part of the celebrations for the first Alice's Day in 2007, the Bodleian staged an exhibition including the earliest editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and amongst "Other highlights of the display [were] two posters from a set of 6 based on Tenniel's designs by J. Rossetti, Christina. Harrison, Florence (illustrator).
Thick 4to. London: Blackie & Son Limited, 1910. Thick 4to, xxiv, 369, [3] pp. Illustrated with 36 tipped in colour plates and 34 black and white plates by Florence Harrison. Original white buckram decorated in gilt, gilt top, front hinge cracking, very good. First edition with lovely late Art Nouveau illustrations. "Florence Susan Harrison was the second daughter of Captain Norwood Harrison and his wife Lucy. Their first daughter Edith died during early childhood and two younger brothers Arthur and Godfrey, were born later. The family were Anglicans and much of Florence's education must have been carried out by her closest family during long periods at sea with her parents. Between voyages, however, she attended a school run by a relative in Folkestone. Her first published illustrations appeared in Rhymes and Reasons (Blackie 1905) and the popularity of that book quickly led to a further commission entitled The Rhyme of a Run. Both of these books were aimed at the expanding children's market of the time. They were very well received : the Atheneum praised the "charming imagination in both verse and pictures".The following year Harrison received £100 (approximately £8500 at today's values) for a further collection of her verse entitled In the Fairy Ring. This was aimed at a more adult market and the Pall Mall Gazette commented "so excellent are the drawings that they earn Miss Harrison a very high place among the illustrators of children's books". In 1908 Blackie commissioned Harrison to illustrate a major gift book destined specifically for the adult market as part of their … [Click Below for Full Description]

"F. R."
Various New England and New York locations, 1910. Unbound. Very good. The envelopes range in size from 4.25" x 2.75" to 5.75" x 3.75". All of the artwork is in black ink, and two of the designs incorporate the cover's stamp into its design. Stamps include two 3-cent Washingtons from the mid-1860s (Scott #65), a 3-cent locomotive from 1869 (Scott #114), a 3-cent Washington from the 1870s (Scott #147), and a 2-cent Washington from the 1910s (Scott Type A140). All are in nice shape; two of the envelopes were trimmed along the right edge when opened. The clever artwork appear s to have drawn by the same person over a span of 50 years. The first shows a panicked rider on a runaway horse and is captioned "No exercise I find is milder, more charming and stirring to the intellect of a student than Horseback-Riding." ride Chesterfield's letters." (No doubt a reference to Lord Chesterfield's letters to his son.) The second is of a scholar in top-hat and tails absorbed in a book while walking down the middle of a railroad track oblivious to a freight train that is rapidly approaching from behind. It is captioned, "Theoretical Theology." The third has a drawing of a man dressed in somewhat tattered clothes carrying a large bundle under his arm. It is captioned "Ye 'Job Lot' man 'hopeful.'" The fourth features a pugnacious sailor in a boxing stance next to a postmarked Washington stamp which is affixed so it appears to be lying on the deck of a ship. It is captioned, "See Here Now!! Stop That! It is bad enough to give Geo. Washington a licking without then stamping on him." And the last … [Click Below for Full Description]

Born in County Antrim, Ireland, the author John Denvir (1834–1916) spent most of his life in Liverpool, where he established a construction business and also worked for the Irish nationalist cause as journalist, publisher, cultural activist and political organiser. His was a Fenian at the time of the 1867 rising, after which he gravitated towards constitutional nationalism, seeing it as a more pragmatic route to Irish self-government. In addition to editing the Catholic Times, the United Irishman and the Nationalist newspapers, Denvir published the popular Illustrated Irish Penny Library. Denvir was a founding member of the Home Rule Confederation of Great Britain through which he gained an intimate knowledge of Irish nationalist networks and personalities. .
