GOURSAT, Georges; as] SEM.
Size: 560 x 723 mm Fair condition. Lithograph. Printed colour. Georges Goursat (1863-1934), known as Sem, attained a high level of success with his wonderful portrayals of Paris at the turn of the century. This outstanding caricaturist was a member of the Salon des Humoristes and an officer of the Legion of Honor. His works offer us glimpses into Parisian high society at the turn of the century. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable, particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition, in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. Sem captured the spirit of the subject and in turn produced images that were true to life. This beautiful print is a part of Album de Sem published in Paris c. 1910. Mathilde de Morny married the Marquis de Belbeuf in 1881. She was a close friend of Colette and an artist herself by the name d'Yssim. She committed suicide in 1944 completely bankrupt.

ALAIN
» [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Manuscript signed by Alain of an article in the series Propos d'un Normand gathering daily tickets delivered to the Dépêche de Rouen, 54 lines in pencil, a correction of the hand of the author. Folds inherent to the folded sheet, paper yellowed in places, tiny hole at the top of the manuscript without infringement of the text. Inspired by the fable The Wolf and the Dog of La Fontaine, Alain depicts a satire of Parisian intellectual circles through the story of a meeting between a young ambitious author and an academician: " At that moment, the author lean recognized in the fat author the dog of the fable, and saw the mark of the necklace. "Ripped? said the wolf, so you do not run where you want? He made a gambol, and disappeared. " [Attributes: Firs … [Click Below for Full Description]

MacGREGOR, William, Sir, Governor of Newfoundland.
n.p. ca 1910, [St. Johns?]. 27 cm; 64-222, X (of XI) pages. Lacks final leaf with page XI; pages IX-X supplied in facsimile. Bound in recent half cloth over marbled boards, titled on spine. Astonishingly well-traveled (considering the absence of mechanization), Dr. William MacGregor was posted as a medical officer first in the Seychelles, then in Mauritius, then he moved up the ranks to become Chief Medical Officer in Fiji before his appointment to the post of administrator of British New Guinea, and later Governor of Lagos! In 1904, he was appointed Governor of Newfoundland. In that post, he organized and personally conducted a scientific expedition to Labrador, the aim of which was to survey its coast and investigate its natural resources. The results of this expedition, published here, were of anthropological as well as geographical and meteorological interest, for which he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. MOTTU & JULLIARD (fabricants ébénistes).
S.d., s.l. Balilla Pratella
Milan: Direzione del Movimento Futurista, 1910. Single sheet folded once to make [4]pp. Soft horizontal fold to middle, else a nice example of this early Futurist manifesto, the first on music. The first musician to "surrender to the persuasion of promises and liberation", Pratella was courted early on by Marinetti to join his new movement that he hoped would breathe new life into Italian culture. Though not as nihilistic as Russolo's Art of Noises published three years later, he still makes what at the time, were revolutionary demands that musicians break from the traditional, proclaiming in a later manifesto that" the new order of disorder should be created by destroying the ancient schemes.".

Similar to a salesmen's dummy in its appearance, this specimen book was reserved for the use of the publishers and was probably produced as a pre-publication sample and perhaps retained as part of the Gresham Publishing Company's archives. Christina Rossetti (1830-94) was an influential and much admired poet of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The Poetry Foundation says that "In Rossetti's lifetime opinion was divided over whether she or Elizabeth Barrett Browning was the greatest female poet of the era," while the DNB notes her significant influence on Virginia Woolf and "poets as diverse as Gerard Manley Hopkins, Elizabeth Jennings, and Philip Larkin." The Pre-Raphaelite and Art Nouveau illustrator Florence Harrison (1877-1955) was a fitting choice for Rossetti's poems--she also illustrated editions of William Morris and Alfred Tennyson. Poet, critic, and suffragette Alice Meynell (1847-1942) penned the introduction, adding further prestige and appeal to the work. It goes without saying that this book--of considerable interest in its full-blooded version--is impossibly rare in the present truncated and intriguing form.. 265 x 200 mm. (10 1/2 x 7 7/8"). xxiv, 30 leaves of text. With an introduction by Alice Meynell. Publisher's black buckram, title stamped in blin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Palazzeschi, Aldo [A. Giurlani]
Note, undated later Routledge editions extend 246pp. Signed at crown of ffe in ink: "L.M. Montgomery Macdonald / December 14 / 1912" with a corresponding number opposite on pastedown, "1.24". At least 34 passages throughout the text have been marked in pencil with an accompanying handful of notes, in the unmistakable hand of Anne Shirley's creator. Her grandmother (& surrogate mother) having died 5 March 1911, Montgomery was forced to leave their home, freeing her to finally marry fiance, Ewen Macdonald. Following the wedding (5 July) they sailed to Liverpool (8 July) returning late September to their new home in Leaskdale, where the following summer their first child was born (7 July). According to consecutive journal entries for the 12th & 16th of December 1912, Montgomery had presented a paper at the Guild Kipling night (Thursday the 12th) & had to endure the sorrowful departure of her dear friend & helpmate, Frederica Campbell, who left Leaskdale for a position at the Ladies College in Red Deer (on the 16th). Ponting, Herbert
London: Fine Art Society, 1910. Carbon Print mounted on card. (335 X 455 mm). Framed in an original polished black wood frame. Original Fine Art Society label on the back titled "Capt. L E G Oates" and "No. 142". The frame is a bit bumped and chipped on the edges. The original paper label from the Fine Art Society is present. The image has not been examined out of the frame, but the condition appears to be excellent with no apparent problems. This and the image of Scott in the catalogue were purchased at the same time. The Scott image has the identical frame and also has an extra Fine Art Society label on the back of the mounting card, which we assume this image also has. The image shows Oates at the stable door with his arm resting on a hay bale and holding a shovel in his right hand. He is also wearing a balaclava. This image, like the Scott image, is scarce and no copy has been at auction in the last 10 years. It appears on page 378 of Scott's Last Expedition and page 285 of The Great White South. This, and the Scott image, would make a wonderful pair for any collector's wall! 1910

FORTESCUE X14 VOLS MAPS NORMANS TO WWI ICONIC SET
[MILITARY HISTORY, UNITED KINGDOM / ENGLAND, SETS] FORTESCUE, Sir John William 'A HISTORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY' London. Macmillan and Co. 1910 - 1935. Mixed issue set (as usually found). 14 (of 20; lacks only the 6 exclusively map volumes) thick octavo volumes (5.75 in x 9.0 in) Original fine red cloth with gilt spine titles. Spines faded (as usual). Profusely illustrated with 102 maps; many folding. Hinges quite sound. Contents clean, no ink, tears, foxing or stains. Not ex-library. A fresh, sound set which is largely unopened in many places. Overall, about near fine. About as uncommon an offering at an affordable level as you will find in commerce. Sir John Fortescue is of course the man who wrote this famous history of the British Army from the Norman Conquest to the First World War which to this day remains one of the greatest masterpieces in the field of military history. Fortescue wrote his iconic work on the British Army between 1899 and 1930, starting it after leaving the post of secretary to the Governor of the Windward Islands and during his work as librarian of Windsor Castle (1905-1926). The complete set is comprised of 14 text & map volumes + 6 exclusively map volumes. As offered here, the 14 text & map volumes is ideal for someone who desires a nice, original set, but is willing to forego the 6 dedicated map volumes and enjoy the fullness of the text and 102 supplementary maps (many which are folding and fully adequate for all but the most inquisitive or scholar level readers) at a substantial savings vs a complete set which runs well into the $1500 -$2500+ ran … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mascagni, Pietro. (1863-1945) [English Translation by Frederic E. Weatherley]
London: Ascherberg, Hopwood & Crew, Ltd., [ca. 1910]. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Vocal scoreÂof one of the most popular of all Italian operas,Âinscribed and signed by the composer on the title (translated from the Italian): "To dearest Signor Trossell / in grateful memory of the lyric season at the Hippodrome and as a sign of sincere esteem and friendship /ÂP. Mascagni /ÂLondon 24th March 1912"Âto title. Upright folio, 168 pp. [PN] 605. Crimson modern morocco-backed boards, spine gilt, 4to.ÂFine.ÂCavalleria Rusticana is the most well-known work of the composer who wrote 15 additional operas. The publisher Sonzogno announced a competition in July of 1888, open to all young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed on stage. Mascagni apparently had not heard of the competition until only two months before its closing date, but found his librettists and completed the work in time for submission on the final day of the competition. The opera won and was first performed in Rome at the Teatro Costanzi on May 17, 1890 with Mascagni apparently taking 40 curtain calls on opening night. It has since remained one of the most beloved of all Italian operas, frequently paired in a so-called "Cav/Pag" double-bill with Leoncavallo's Pagliacci.
