MILLIKAN, Robert Andrews.
London: Taylor & Francis, 1910. First edition. A fine copy of Millikan's famous experiment, later known as the 'oil-drop experiment', in which he first provided the definitive proof that all electrical charges are exact multiples of a definite, fundamental value--the charge of the electron. Millikan's experiment is nowadays known as the 'oil-drop experiment' due to a later improvement by Millikan and his student Harvey Fletcher in 1910 - using oil in the cloud chamber - but it was in this paper (although water and alcohol were the liquids used) that Millikan first made precise measurements of the charge on single isolated droplets instead of as earlier just statistical averages on the surface of clouds of droplets. Although important, the fundamental breakthrough in Millikan's work was not his measurement of the actual value of the electron's charge (in fact he was as close to the correct value in this paper dated October 1909 as he was in the later oil experiment of 1910), but the fact that Millikan was able to produce, isolate, and observe single droplets with electrical charges, and show that repeated measurements of the charges always revealed exact integral multiples of one fundamental unity value. Previous experiments by Thomson and Wilson had in fact revealed the same value of the electron's charge as Millikan's experiment did but their determinations were based on statistical averages on the surface of large clouds of numerous water droplets and repeated measurements on the clouds gave fractional values of the electron's charge. This fact implied to some antiatomist … [Click Below for Full Description]

DU CANE GODMAN, Frederick
Witherby & Co, London, 1910. Title in red and black. With 106 fine hand-colored lithographed plates by J.G. Keulemans and H. Gronvold. Each part in the original printed wrappers, though wrappers to parts I and III are detached and others are a bit chipped; plates, as well as the entire interior, are exquisite. An uncut and beautiful set preserved in a folding clamshell case. First edition, Number 156 of 225 copies printed. An amazing copy of a rare work showcasing Keulemans' incredible talents as an illustrator. This monograph on the petrels (distinguished from gulls in that they seldom come to land except to breed) was begun by Osbert Salvin, but he died in the early stages; Godman later took over the task assisted by Richard Bowdler Sharpe, whose daughters assisted with the coloring of the plates. The first part was issued in December, 1907 with 20 plates; part II in March, 1908 with 20 plates; part III in September, 1908 with 27 plates and an apology from the publishers (printed on the verso of the front wrapper) stating regret for the "unavoidable delay, occasioned by the serious illness of the Author."; part IV in April, 1909 with 18 plates, and the final part in May, 1910 with 21 plates as well as the introductory text. Godman (1834-1919) was a British ornithologist, lepidopterist and entomologist. He was a founder and president of the British Ornithologists' Union. An expert of the flora and fauna of Central America, he was co-author of the monumental multi-volume Biologia Centrali-Americana (1879-1915), as well as The natural history of the Azores (1870). London: Charles Jones, 1910. The pre-war era saw the last great flurry of neo-classical monumentalism in British architecture, and as such is responsible for many of the grandest buildings that are familiar to us in our cities. This publication recorded and assessed these buildings, such as Admiralty Arch, the Liverpool Cotton Exchange, Selfridges, The Central Criminal Courts, the RAC club, and myriad others so familiar. In each case there is a description of the building, its intended purpose, and a list of the sub-contractors who actually built it. Also of interest to the student of architecture, is the fact noted in the introduction. The world of design and architecture at this very point was realising the possibilities of a new material: steel. "This is a steel age in more senses than one - and nowhere have the days of steel been more pregnant with change than in architecture and building." At this point steel was still dressed in portland stone, but the first glimmers of radical new possibilities can be seen. With many high-quality contemporary photographs of the buildings in question. Collated: complete. CONDITION In the original cloth, with gilt titles to the front boards and spines. Externally sound, with some general wear and marks of handling. Volume VI is a little more worn around the spine. Internally, volumes I and II are lightly foxed here and there. Volume II has a contemporary ink inscripion to the title page. Generally firmly bound. Overall Condition: Very Good.

William Pennington
Condition: Very Good. Very Good. Toned photograph of Balcony House, Mesa Verde National Park in winter. Photograph taken after 1910 excavation. Photograph has sepia tones and measures 16" wide by 10" tall. Light wear to corners and light soiling to back of photo. After reviewing a collection of 24 photographs acquired from the Pennington heir collection, it seems that most said photographs were artist proofs due to many identical images with slight variations in exposure. William Marion Pennington photographed people and landscapes across the Southern United States in the early 1900's. In 1907, he and fellow photographer, Lisle Updike opened Pen-Dike Studio in Durango, Colorado; Pennington managing the studio, doing portrait work and operating the dark room, and Updike taking photos in nearby towns and mining camps. In 1911 Pennington took sole control of the studio and renamed it Pennington Studio. Around this time he also obtained a contract from the National Park Service to photograph the cliff dwelling at Mesa Verde National Park. This photograph depicts Balcony House, which was occupied by the Ancestral Puebloans from around A. D. 1180 to 1280 and has 40 rooms. Along with many of the other cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde, occupation at Balcony House ended around A. D. 1300.; 1 pp.

Roosevelt, Theodore
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1910. First edition of Theodore Roosevelt's classic work. Octavo, original cloth, gilt top edge, photogravure frontispiece, illustrated, 48 plates, map of Roosevelt's route and hunting trips in Africa. Signed by Theodore Roosevelt and the three scientists from his expedition on the front free endpaper, Theodore Roosevelt; Good Luck! Edgar A. Mearns; Edmund Heller; Best wishes J. Alden Loring kind regards. The men joined Roosevelt and his son Kermit as part of his principal team. Edgar A. Mearns was an ornithologist and longtime friend of Roosevelt's, Edmund Heller, a zoologist and taxidermist for the Smithsonian Institution with previous experience in Africa, and J. Alden Loring, a mammalogist and field collector. Loring and Heller supplied some of the photographs that illustrate Roosevelt's book, one of the most famous of all big-game hunting epics (Czech), while Loring and Mearns both contributed to the appendices. Appendix C contains Loring's notes on East Africa, and Roosevelt drew on Mearns's notes of his and Loring's biological survey of Mount Kenya, undertaken while Roosevelt was on a solo hunt. Absenting himself from politics for a year, Roosevelt set off on an elaborate hunting trip to gather specimens for the Smithsonian. He was determined not to hire laboratory scientists (little scientific men), and instead sought out these professional naturalists with experience in the field. Roosevelt was as much a museum naturalist as Heller, Loring, or Mearns, but he also understood the importance of conveying his passion to a much broade … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York City: Cambridge University Press. Very good condition. As the last sets of the Encyclopedia Britannica prepare to sink into obscurity, there's one edition that will always remain a collector's item: the 11th. Published between 1910 and 1911, the 11th edition continues to inspire a religious reverence from its loyal adherents. The siren call of its 28 leather-bound volumes works a subtle magic on antiquarians, historians, booksellers, and scholars around the world. The 11th is exceptionally well written, the first encyclopedia where readability was courted in addition to scholarship. But its durability goes deeper than that. Jacobs continued, "I think Hans Koning of the New Yorker nailed the appeal 30 years ago. He said it was the last great work of the age of reason, the final instance when all human knowledge could be presented with a single point of view. Four years later, the confidence and optimism that had produced the 11th would be, as he puts it, 'a casualty in the slaughter at Ypres and the Argonne.'" And he's right. To open an 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica is to open a worldview lost forever in the staggering slaughter of the first world war. The 11th edition of the Britannica represents the high tide of optimism and belief in human progress that had dominated the Anglo-Saxon vision since the Enlightenment. Unabashed optimism - and unabashed racism - pervades many entries in the 11th, and provide its defining characteristics. The Edwardian world was finely ordered in the way an encyclopedia needs the world to be finely ordered: everything, an … [Click Below for Full Description]

SMITH, E.BOYD
SMITH,E.BOYD. ORIGINAL ART: ANOTHER OUTLINE, OR THE STRANGE STORY OF DENNIS THE O'GEOGHEGAN. Offered here is an original watercolor done by Smith for an unpublished book. Done in the same size and format of his Early Life of Mr. Man, circa 1910. It measures 11 1/2" wide by 9 3/4" high and is matted with the the visible image measuring 10" x 8 1/2". The image is a tongue in cheek look at evolution with a simian (gorilla) portrait side by side with a human portrait whose face shows that we haven't evolved too much from the monkeys. O'Geoghegan is so clearly an Irish name that this could be Smith's insult, hopefully with good humor rather than with malice. Both portraits are embedded in the evolutionary tree. Below this are various prehistoric animals including dinosaurs and a mastodon. Typical of Smith's work but with more of an edge resulting in a piece that is fun to look at. Smith has a prominent place in the history of American picture books. In the Brooklyn Public Library's on-line exhibit they note that with his first 2 picture books "it immediately established him, along side Howard Pyle and Jessie Willcox Smith as one of America's leading illustrators for the young."

Various
