[Circa 1910s]. The photograph has recently been hinge-mounted and matted with archival material, ready for framing. Signed and titled (twice) in pencil on the original mount (now concealed by the mat). Provenance: from the family of John Kauffmann, by descent (sold by Sotheby's Australia, 24 July 1988); private collection, Sydney. Adelaide-born John Kauffmann (1864-1942), a pioneering photo-impressionist, spent a decade in Europe studying art and photography. On his return to Adelaide in 1897, he immediately interested himself in the South Australian Photographic Society. The Society held several important exhibitions in the early 1900s, and due partly to Kauffmann's influence, art photography came of age in Australia; the young Harold Cazneaux for instance was inspired by these exhibitions. A comprehensive collection of material from Kauffmann's estate is on our website. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Shaw, George Bernard, et al.
London: Various. Bound in old maroon buckram gilt, edges slightly trimmed, some with original red wrapper covers bound in, various editions and with some in multiple editions with corrections and revisions. Contains some of George Bernard Shaw's earliest published pieces; he would become the Fabian Society's most prominent pamphleteer. Binding lightly used at the joints, contents VG. Unlike other collections of Fabian Tracts on the market that are reprints from the 1910s, this appears to be a compilation of the original publications from the 1880s and 1890s. Very Good.

RADCLYFFE-HALL, Marguerite.
London: Chapman and Hall, 1910. Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gilt within gilt frames, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, pink silk page marker, partially unopened. Pencil notation to rear free endpaper. Spine sunned, front board a little bowed, rubbing to extremities, top edge dust toned, foxing to edges and occasionally to margins, light soiling to first few pages; a very good copy. With 3 pp. of publisher's adverts at end. First edition, first impression, in a variant purple cloth, of Radclyffe Hall's third published work, this copy with a pleasing association, bearing a Christmas gift inscription of Lady Maud "Emerald" Cunard (mother of Nancy) to Violet Manners, Duchess of Rutland, in pencil on the first blank, "Xmas 1910 Violet from Emerald C", and with the Rex Whistler designed bookplate of Violet's son-in-law Duff Cooper to the front pastedown. Poems of the Past & Present is dedicated to Hall's lover, Mabel Batten, and memorialises their relationship; the first poem, "A Dedication" gives thanks for Batten's love, and the final poem, "Postscript" acknowledges her role in editing and compiling the poems. Shortly after the work was published Batten's husband George died, allowing the pair to live together in a de facto marriage until Batten's sudden death six years later. The work is explicitly romantic; the poems of the present celebrating the "couple's mutual devotion" and the poems of the past referring "most specifically to a sequence of Sapphic verses called the 'Fruit of the Nispero'" (Dellamora, p. 26). Richard Dellamora, Radclyf … [Click Below for Full Description]

RICE, T.W.
Rochester, N.Y., Rochester Litho. Co., [ca 1900-1910]. Oblong 8vo., (9 x 5 4/8 inches). 76 fine chromolithographed or half-tone plates with additional colour, of varieties of fruit, shrubs, garden flowers and trees. Contemporary green cloth. A fine album of extraordinarily colourful plates of plants of all varieties available from T.W. Rice of Geneva, N.Y., printed in Rochester, New York. Each plate is accompanied by a short caption describing the plant: this of the Maiden's Blush apple: "Tender and pleasant, but not high flavored; bears large crops. A valuable old market apple". Rice's nursery in Geneva has tipped in the following advice to their salesmen on the front paste-down: "Handle Carefully. Please use the Plate Book carefully, and do not mark the prices on the plates. avoid getting it wet or soiled, and by erasing finger marks occasionally with a piece of rubber, the plates can be kept neat and clean. The books are expensive and should have good care; besides, a clean book is more attractive". "As Rochester's gardening flourished a local bookseller with an interest in the subject, D.M. Dewey, began to collect and publish coloured plates of fruit, flowers, shrubs, and fruit-bearing or purely ornamental trees. Selections of these plates sold by Dewey and others from the 1850s to the last decade of the century were usually bound into pocket-sized books about ten by six inches with stout leather covers, often stamped with the name of the nursery or the salesman offering the plants portrayed within. Dewey also recognised the wider appeal of the coloured plates described … [Click Below for Full Description]

A travelling seedsman's custom-made sample catalogue assembled from stock plates, including examples produced by D. M. Dewey and the Strecher Lith. Co., of Rochester. Dewey also recognised the wider appeal of the coloured plates described by Charles van Ravenswaay as 'an innovation in American popular art' ("A Nineteenth-Century Garden", 1977, page 20.). Their polychromic attractions were extended to a larger audience in small selections from a lar … [Click Below for Full Description]
