        A Book of Bunnies

Private, New York 1910 - Pictorial boards have a cloth spine. Heavy wear at corners, moderate to edges. Spine ends are bumped, but not worn. Boards are soiled from mainly general soil. The book is about 8" by 14". Hinges are weak, but covers are firmly attached. Rear board has two horizontal creases. Pages have finger soiling to margins, and one has a small coffee? drip onto bottom of illustration. The entire book is hand colored. I believe that the author had a limited number printed, and she hand colored the illustrations. Then she gave these to various children, over the years, and that the inscription is probably from her. There is a gift inscription on the title page "Colored for Ginny Ann with a chunk of lettuce by Peter Rabbit 'hisself', July 1925." At the top of the title page is an address label for a Virginia A. Weadock - presumably the Ginny Ann of the inscription. There are 10 pages printed only on the recto with illustration and a short verse. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Sunny Memories. An Album for the Artistic Display of Photographs. Designed by MATTHEW SURFACE. Editor of The Practical Photographer.

Lund Humphries. Bradford & London. No date c. 4to 1910 - Comprising 12 card leaves, each side of which has a pierced overlay for the display of a varied number of photographs, of different formats. Six of these overlays have been a little torn, but the album is in overall very good condition in the original red cloth gilt. There are 140 separate photographs, mostly albumen prints, the occasional platinum print, attached by means of stamp edging at the corners and below the overlays; one of the photographs is torn, otherwise all in good condition. *The main content of the album appears to relate to a boys school, possibly in Herefordshire. There are two charming group photographs of the boys with teachers and a uniformed caretaker/janitor, a cricket team, separate prints of teachers and boys by the river, a part-timbered building [possibly the school], a number of images of children, the family pets, adult groups [possibly the head-teacher and family], and various houses and outdoor scenes. Only two prints are identified - Leominster Priory and Eaton Hall [Cheshire - the Waterhouse incarnation, completed in 1882], there is also one of the Blackpool Tower, completed in 1894, a couple of Chamonix and of the most interest, six beach scenes with exceptional detail [donkeys, bathing huts, horse vehicles, life-boats, crowds at the water's edge]. There are a couple of street scenes, a carnival procession and a life-boat being towed by a crowd, a couple of views of washerwomen scrubbing clothes at the side of the river or the sea, and numerous others of charm and interest. MATTHEW SURFACE was the pseudonym of PERCY LUND, the editor of The Junior Photographer, 1894-1900, when it merged with The Practical Photographer. The album is thus post-1900 in production and the clothing of the subjects in the pictures would give a date for the early twentieth century, probably in the first decade. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

North Pole: Its Discovery in 1909 Under the Auspices of the Peary Arctic Club

Frederick A. Stokes, New York 1910 - Limited First Edition, 3/4 dark blue morocco leather over light blue cloth boards with gilt top edge, spine in five raised bands with six compartments, having embossed gilt lettering, deckeled paper, marbled end papers. General Hubbard Edition, limited #102 of 500 copies SIGNED by Peary on the limitation leaf with an Introduction by Theodore Roosevelt and a Foreword by Gilbert H. Grosvenor. Eight full-page relief halftone illustrations reproducing photographic enlargements colored by hand and 100 relief halftone illustrations from photographs, with a folding color map of the polar region by Gilbert H. Grosvenor at the rear. The dramatic firsthand account of Robert Peary?s 1908-1909 expedition in which he claimed, on April 7 1909, to have become the first person to reach the geographic North Pole. A bold, highly able, and tenacious person, Peary has been described by historian Fergus Fleming as "possibly the most successful and probably the most unpleasant man in the annals of polar exploration." Following Peary?s return and the certification of his claim by the National Geographic Society, a sponsor of the expedition along with the privately funded Peary Arctic Club, Peary received a Congressional Gold Medal, The Royal Geographical Society of London Special Great Gold Medal, and by act of Congress a lifetime pension at the rank of rear admiral, although he had served less than nine years on active duty as a naval engineer from 1881 to 1909, and been granted paid leave for the more than fifteen years encompassing his eight arctic expeditions. Singed on fly paper by previous owner Samuel Mather, the prominent Cleveland Industrialist, with his personal bookplate. Showing some light wear [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Pour la Coupe, 1904 / La Turcat-Méry classée dans l'eliminataire et la de Dietrich, licence Turcat-Mery]

Paris: [Mabileau & Co.], c. 1910. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Several creases. Small loss in image. Page toned. approximately 12 x 31 1/4 inches. 15 1/8 x 32 1/2 inches. Proof copy before titles, colouring partially completed These two cars are identical to the 12.8 litre 4 cylinder De Dietrichs. Turcat-Mery seems to be a name plate associated with passenger autos, yet raced under the name of De Dietrichs in most cases. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.

Mr. Churchill on the Peers by Winston S. Churchill, first edition only printing, bound in Pamphlets & Leaflets for 1910, Being the Publications for the Year of the Liberal Publication Department

Contained in this bound volume is the first edition, only printing of this scarce Churchill speech pamphlet. In 1910 Winston Churchill was a young lion of the Liberal Party, vexing the British establishment and helping Lloyd George lay the foundations of the modern welfare state. Here is the original 1910 leaflet publishing Churchill's 14 November letter stating vehement opposition to the veto power of the House of Lords. This leaflet captures the young radical Churchill in full flower. "Was ever inequality more scandalous? Was ever injustice more glaring? All classes are to have votes; but only Tory votes are to count. WE CAN SUBMIT NO LONGER TO THIS USAGE. THIS IS OUR LAND AS MUCH AS IT IS THEIRS." The leaflet is two pages, published by the Liberal Publications Department as Leaflet No. 2358 on 18 November 1910. It is bound in a volume containing Liberal Party speeches and pamphlets for the year 1910. The binding is black leather pebble grain spine over green ribbed cloth covers, the book measures 8.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. It contains a table of contents indexing by subject the numerous bound pamphlets and leaflets. The book is a fascinating piece of history, containing pamphlets and leaflets of various shapes and sizes, many of which are folded in and, we imagine, are unlikely to now be found anywhere else given their fragility and ephemeral nature. Condition of the bound volume is good overall - with a fair binding but fine contents. The contents, including the Churchill speech pamphlet, are in excellent condition - crisp, clean, bright, and tight. No spotting. Even the page edges are clean. A previous owner name is inked on the ffep and there is minor bookseller pencil notation on the front pastedown. The leather spine is still intact, but dry and fragile with losses at the spine ends and all along the front hinge. The green cloth boards show moderate scuffing.         Meeting de Champagne. Olieslaegers recordman de la duree et de la distance par 392 k. en 5h 3m sur monoplan Bleriot, moteur Gnome, magneto Bosch

Paris.: Mabileau & Co.. 1910.. Color lithograph with pochoir (stencil) handcolor, image approximately 15 x 29 inches on sheet 17 3/4 x 35 1/2 inches. Two tiny edge tears, soft crease at tip of right corner of sheet, very good condition, clean and bright. 'Gamy' is thought to be a pseudonym of Marguerite Montaut, the wife of the French poster artist Ernest Montaut, who died in 1909 at the age of 31. Ernest Montaut and, after his death, his wife, produced posters whose subject matter reflects the era's fascination with speed, on land and in the air. The posters were elaborately produced employing a combination of color lithography and handcoloring using the pochoir (stencil) process. This image portrays a monoplane flying low over the aviation field, with two spectators in the foreground, commemorating the record set by airman Olieslaegers for time and distance aloft. .

Ehrlich had the idea of a "magic bullet" drug -- one that could seek out and attack invading organisms but not affect the host tissue -- after performing experiments with dyes in which bacteria had absorbed a stain while the surrounding micro-organism had not. Ehrlich and his assistant Hata performed 605 experiments with arsenical compounds on the spirochaeta pallida, the organism causing syphilis, which Fritz Schaudinn had identified in 1905, before they succeeded using a compound that they named "Salvarsan 606." "This was the first chapter in the history of chemotherapy, later stages being marked by the discovery of prontosil and the brilliantly successful sulpha drugs, including the well-known 'M. & B. 693' which was to save the life of Winston Churchill at a critical point in the Second World War" (PMM).         An oil painting, probably made in the early 20th century, of Hester Lynch Thrale (1741 - 1821), after Robert Edge Pine (1730 - 1788). The original picture of Mrs. Thrale by Pine dating from 1781 was auctioned at Christie's South Kensington in December 2008

      c. 1910. The exterior dimensions are 760 x 62o mms., while the oval portrait is 560 x 460 mms. The original painting was sold at Christie's South Kensington in November, 2008, sold for £103,250. One interesting feature of the painting is that Mrs. Thrale was described as having grey eyes; and they are definitely grey in the Christie's portrait. In this painting - copy or otherwise - her eyes are hazel. It was engraved for the European Magazine in 1786.

Influence of Parental Alcoholism. A Letter [A second Letter] to the Editors of the "Journal of The Royal Statistical Society." Reprinted from the Journal of The Royal Statistical Society Vol. LXXIV, Part I (December, 1910) [Vol. LXXIV, Part III (February, 1911)].

London: Harrison and Sons for The Royal Statistical Society, 1910-11 - Two volumes, octavo (226 × 142 mm), pp. [114]-121 & [339]-345. Wire-stitched as issued in the original printed paper wrappers. Preserved in a custom made chemise and cloth box. In excellent condition. The second volume marked "2nd letter" in Keynes's distinctive hand in ink. First separate editions of the two letters written by Keynes to the editors of The Royal Statistical Society concerning Keynes's controversy with Professor Karl Pearson on statistics and probability. "One of Keynes's long-standing statistical bête noires was Karl Pearson, a Kingsman of the 1880s. Leader of the statistical school of probability, he was fired by a passion to apply the calculus of probability to biological data, in order to establish an actuarial basis for eugenic planning. In June 1910, the Galton Laboratory, of which Pearson was director, published a memoir on the influence of parental alcoholism on children. In a sharp review in the July 1910 number of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society [a photocopy of which is included here], Keynes decided that the Galton memoir was 'almost valueless' and 'actually misleading'. He had two main points. The first was that no general conclusions could be drawn from the studies since their populations were 'unrepresentative' of the whole population. The second was that the Galton memoir had not succeeded in showing that the populations investigated were in fact homogeneous." (Skidelsky). The dispute soon spread to the newspapers, and Alfred Marshall also joined in the public controversy, writing to The Times. The present two letters comprise Keynes's replies to Pearson, the first of which he considered "a smashing reply" (ibid.) "Keynes's hostility to Pearson also reflects his hostility to the use of mathematical methods in social science. He called the first Galton memoir 'a salient example of the application of a needlessly complex mathematical apparatus to initial data, of which the true character is insufficiently explained, and which are in fact unsuited to the problem in hand'" (ibid). Moggridge G 13.1 & G 13.2. See Skidelsky, John Maynard Keynes, Hopes Betrayed 1883-1920, p. 223ff. [Attributes: First Edition]

"Das Nordlicht", ein wortmächtiges Versepos, an dem Däubler bereits seit 1898 gearbeitet hatte wurde 1916 von dem jungen Philosophen Carl Schmitt in einer Monographie enthusiastisch besprochen. Kasimir Edschmid schrieb 1920 über Däubler: "Er ist einer der von innen Leuchtenden, selbst das Dunkle und Wirre hat den einfachen Reiz".
