REFERENCE LIBRARY A Set of 12 books Finely Bound in Half Vellum Housed in a bespoke bookcase: J.C.Vicery Atlas of the World; Dictionary of Dates, English -German, French-English, English, Political Quotations, Daily Reckoner, Gazetteer, Etc.

J.C. Vickery, London 1910 - Other titles include English - French and German - English. All 12 volumes are housed in the original polished mahogany bookcase. No date but c. 1910 (foreword to Atlas dated 1910). All edges gilt and all endpapers blue marbled. The dictionary of Dates and the World Atlas are a larger format and housed in thier own trays beneath the other volumes. The Dictionary of dates is missing its ribbon to ease removal from the tray. The smaller volumes are flanked by the slightly larger translation dictionaries on a single shelf. The Atlas is complete with 72 coloured plates, mostly double paged. this J. C. Vickery vellum edition was probably designed to appeal to the "wedding present market". The bindings are all in very good condition with just a little general wear and rubbing, the blue cloth is very slightly marked and shows slight signs of handling, the vellum is very clean with bright gilt to the spines. Contents are good and tight. The display shelf is in very good condition with a little damage to the rear of the casing where a few additional pins have been added, the surface is nicely polished. A handsome set. Bibliographic note: J. C. Vickery now no longer trading, renowned for high quality objects in a similar vein to Liberty, Aspreys etc. Almost certainly this set was produced in different liveries to meet the specifications of the retailer. Several years ago we sold a similar, but different, reference library with Asprey title pages; however this is the finest set we have seen. 12mo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Album of Vernacular Photographs of Family Life

, [no date - circa 1910] [no date - circa 1910]. Black cloth photo album. Oblong. Measuring 10" x 7.25". Album contains 21 affixed sepia toned photographs, along with an additional 15 black and white, sepia, or silver print photos laid in, three negatives of a woman on a typewriter, and the personalized handkerchief of Mary A. Pettit. All photos are between 2.5" x 2" and 5.5" x 3.5" and are very good or better with slight edgewear and some creasing. Album has worn corners and rubbing.A prosaic album displaying images of home life, probably from the first decade of the 20th Century, and mostly centered on the activities of women. From the back marks (of the photo studios Bailey and Myers-Cope Company) which appear on some of the loose photographs it can be presumed the families lived somewhere in proximity to Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia. Many of the scenes are of women in fancy hats or perambulating with parasols. Also making an appearance are the occasional men and children, most of whom are posing for portraits, one of a man pretending to drive a car. Among the photos are three negatives of a woman on a typewriter with what appears to be an early Dictaphone-like device. A pleasing album of carefree upper middle class people enjoying the decades before World War and financial hardship would upset the bucolic pace of American life. .

        A Circuit Rider's Wife

Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company, (1910) Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company. (1910). First. First edition. Illustrations by William H. Everett. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with decorative gilt stamping. Mild edgewear, an attractive, very good or better copy. Inscribed and dated by Harris on the front flyleaf: "With compliments of the Author, Corra Harris. In the Valley, September 4th 1922." Corra May Harris (1869-1935) was, for a time, the most widely known woman from the state of Georgia. Her literary reputation during her life, and her legacy since, rest on this novel. Drawing heavily on her troubled marriage to Methodist minister and educator Lundy Howard Harris, it tells of the challenges, hardships, and mostly intangible rewards of itinerant country preaching in the northern Georgia mountains. Harris wrote more than two dozen books and published over 200 articles and short stories, and well over a thousand book reviews. Although she became famous for her fiction, she earned a reputation for reactionary conservatism with a notorious nationally published piece defending the lynching of Thomas Wilkes, alias Sam Hose, near Newnan, Georgia in 1899 and her subsequent essays on southern identity. She was not so easily categorized though, her 1915 novel The Co-Citizens was seen as both showing support and opposition to woman suffrage! Later, Harris was the first women war correspondent to go abroad in World War I. This novel was the basis for the 1951 film I'd Climb the Highest Mountain written and produced by Georgia native Lamar Trotti and starred Susan Hayward and William Lundigan. This title was reprinted by the University of Georgia in 1998, but the first edition is very uncommon, especially signed. .

Typed letter with numerous autogr. annotations. Signed "Ezra Pound", but struck out.

Venice, October 10, no year.. 4to. 1 p.. To the editor of The Listener: "May I be permitted to strengthen Marinetti's quotation of me, in yr/issue for 14th. inst. Marinetti's force and significance are demonstrated in his keeping hold of the root of the matter for a quarter of a century. The root is: MAKE IT NEW. The branches were the whole opposition made by Wyndham Lewis, Gaudier-Breszka and myself to overemphasis on the accelerated impressionism practised by men who called themselves 'futurist' painters in 1910. There was a basic need of renewal. It functioned in half a dozen 'movements' listed by Cremieux. Marinetti has got something done because he did not worry about the differences in detail, and has never lost sight of the basic need: renewal [...]".

[ALBUM OF THIRTY-TWO ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF BALFOUR, NORTH DAKOTA, FEATURING PUBLIC BUILDINGS, HOMES, RESIDENTS, AND RAILROAD FACILITIES]

[Balfour, N.D. circa 1910].. [Balfour, N.D. circa 1910].. Thirty-two original photographic prints, measuring 3 x 4 1/2 inches (or the reverse). Mounted into a contemporary 16mo. tooled limp leather photo album, string-tied. First photograph torn in the upper right corner. A few photographs with creasing or wrinkling, but on the whole in very good condition. An album of original photographs documenting the town of Balfour, North Dakota around 1910, little more than a decade after its 1898 founding. Built on the Great Northern Railroad route about thirty- five miles southeast of Minot, the city was named for Lord Balfour. In the early twentieth century the population grew to nearly 400 residents, largely of German heritage, but the town has only about twenty-five inhabitants today. Included in the album are photographs of several residences, the school building, the First State Bank (established in 1900), the German American State Bank, and the Odd Fellows Hall. Two photographs show views down the main street, depicting livery stables and other businesses. There are views of two churches, grain storage and feed buildings, the post office, a hardware store, and two pictures of the Great Northern train station and cargo platform, along with a concluding photograph showing a train steaming into town. This album descended in the Gould family of Balfour, and the first photograph bears the ownership signature, "Mrs. F.B. Gould." Frederick B. Gould operated the City Dray service in Balfour in the early twentieth century, and also hauled cargo for the Great Northern Railway. One of the photographs shows Gould and another man in his dray wagon, with his business name on the side. Another photograph shows Gould, his wife and two young children in a horse-drawn carriage, and one shows the two children alone.

        Ombres Chinoises

(Paris: Saussine, c. 1910). (Paris: Saussine, c. 1910). This large and very colorful example of a French animated shadow theater, or Ombro-Cinéma, employs a sheet of acetate printed with vertical, black rules set into a chromolithographed wood and cardboard box to create the illusion of movement. A paper scroll printed with a panorama fits into the back of the box, and a wind-up clockwork mechanism with a music box unrolls the scroll so that the images pass by, behind the acetate. The black bars align with the illustrations as they move to animate the images. Scrolls for the theater are interchangeable. This set includes a color-printed roll presenting the tale of Puss in Boots, titled "Film No. 21, Le Chatte Botté," and also comes with an additional black & white scroll titled "Film No. 6, Carnival de Nice," depicting a parade of costumed people, fanciful floats, musicians and acrobats. The surrounding proscenium is brightly illustrated with theatrical red curtains, lanterns, kabuki masks, a geisha and a samurai set in a Japanese landscape. Housed in the original pink paper-covered box, which includes an enclosure for the additional scroll. The publisher's printed instructions, including a list of other scrolls available for the theater, is adhered inside the lid. Box measures 18 by 12 3/4 inches. A very fine example of this optical toy, rarely seen in such excellent, working condition.

        Golden Legend, The

, [1910]. [1910]. A Pristine CopyLONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth. [METEYARD, Sidney N., illustrator]. The Golden Legend. With Illustrations by Sidney N. Meteyard. New York: Hodder & Stoughton / George H. Doran Co., n.d. [1910]. First American trade edition. Quarto (9 5/8 x 7 in; 244 x 179 mm). viii, 153, [1] pp. Twenty-five tipped-in color plates with captioned tissue guards. Publisher's gilt- and blind-stamped cloth. An astonishing copy, very fine in the original glassine dust jacket (a bit of edgewear) and publisher's original box (archivally repaired at joints).British painter and art teacher Sidney Harold Meteyard (1808-1947) worked in stained glass, enamels and tempera, as a book illustrator and designer in the Pre-Raphaelite style of the Birmingham Group, and was further influenced by Edward Burne-Jones and the Arts and Crafts Movement.A lyric drama in verse, "the Golden Legend is a framework including a series of tableaux illustrative of life and manners, principally in Germany, at some period of the middle ages between the first and last crusade. The story by which these tableaux are connected is that a certain Prince Henry of Hoheneck, labouring under an apparently incurable disease, is informed by the doctors of Salerno that he may be cured by the blood of a maiden voluntarily giving her life for his. He is tempted by Lucifer, appearing to him under various disguises, to avail himself of the generosity of a village maiden named Elsie, the daughter of one of his tenants, with whom he takes refuge on being expelled by some not very intelligible priestly process from his castle and princedom on the Rhine. The pair travel together to Salerno, discourse on the various objects of interest they meet on their journey, and finally arrive at Salerno; where the Prince's selfishness gives way before a sudden impulse, and Elsie, becomes Princess of Hoheneck" (The Spectator, Jan. 3, 1852).
