        Autograph letter signed ("RScott").

Christchurch, New Zealand, 22. XI. 1910.. 4to. 1 p.. A "private note under the exceptional circumstances" of his dismissal of Thomas Feather, boatswain of the Terra Nova, written to Sir Richard Poore: "[...] Mr Feather has only one suit of uniform and for this and other reasons, he is anxious to get home at the earliest opportunity. As I said I am very desirous to meet his wishes in view of the heavy punishment of his dismissal [...] All our arrangements are going on well [...]". - Feather had occupied the same position on the Discovery expedition, and accompanied Scott on the Western Journey; Mount Feather in the Quartermain Mountains is named after him. Scott had then praised him as "a thorough seaman, [who] took that intense pride in his charge which was so well known in the old sailing days"; he reportedly discharged Feather from the Terra Nova as a result of friction between him and Lieutenant Henry Rennick. - Printed heading of British Antarctic Expedition, stamp and two annotations by recipient; edges slightly frayed, and somewhat wrinkled.

. German illustrator, marine and landscape painter, who recorded German navy actions in the two World Wars. The son of the artist Fritz Bergen, he trained at the Royal Academy in Munich under Karl von Marr. He began his career as illustrator of Karl May's Winnetou and travel stories and in 1910 his illustrations were exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Brussels. He travelled extensively to Norway, England, the Mediterranean and America, exhibiting and furthering his training. Appointed Marine Painter to Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914, he made numerous dramatic paintings of U-boats and their crews. 'The Liner Columbus at New York' (National Maritime Museum, London) is a work painted in the United States in 1924, while 'The Admiral von Scheer Bombarding the Spanish Coast' (1937, Navy Memorial Museum, Washington) records German action in the Spanish Civil War. As a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party he worked mostly on large-scale official commissions which ceased with the war. Throughout his career he also painted smaller pictures showing sailing boats, fishing villages, harbour and coastal views, including those of Polperro in Cornwall. In 1963 he presented the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, with 'The Atlantic' and the British Admiralty with the painting of Nelson's flagship Victory.         MAX JACOB. Double Signed Litho

Montrouge [Paris] : 1910. Montrouge [Paris] : 1910, 1910 Picasso. Max Jacob. MAX JACOB. Double Signed Litho. Montrouge [Paris] (Seine). 1910. 14" 7/8 X 10" 3/4 on plain paper stock printed in black. Number 17 of only 30 copies. A rare early illustration of Picasso's close friend, Max Jacob, done in celebration of Jacob's conversion to Christianity. Jacob, who had Jewish origins, claimed to have had a vision of Christ in 1909, causing his conversion. The illustration of Jacob [the first of Picasso's drawings of Max Jacob] seated comfortably in a fine armchair, dressed in his three piece suit, his dome appropriately receptive. The printed text: [Top] A mon ami Max Jacob / Picasso .10 / 22 R. Victor Hugo / Montrouge (Seine) - [Middle] L'archange foudroyé n'eut que le temps / de desserrer sa cravate . On aurait sit qu'il / priait encore./ C. Max Jacob. Signed in pencil with his new Christian name: "C. Max Jacob" & by "Picasso" at the bottom. A very good or better example of this rare piece - Max Jacob is regarded as an important link between the symbolists & the surrealists, as can be seen in his prose poems Le cornet à dés (The Dice Box, 1917. Throughout the year of 1901, Picasso traveled to Barcelona & Paris for art exhibitions. During an exhibition in Paris, Picasso met Max Jacob. Max Jacob was a poet, painter, & art critic with connections in the Parisian cultural scene. The two artists developed a friendship after Jacob left an admiring note for Picasso at the art gallery displaying Picasso's work (Richardson Vol. I, 203). Jacob introduced Picasso to the French language and to French theatre; Jacob was also an actor. Jacob took Picasso to see operas which possibly included I Pagliacci & La Bohème (Richardson Vol. I, 338). "At night there were frequent visits to the cabarets of Montmartre such as the Chat Noir, and, when tickets could be found, to the Moulin Rouge" (Penrose Picasso 76). Picasso & his friends also enjoyed the artistic atmosphere of Le Lapin Agile. Artists & writers would congregate at the small café to listen to recitals, exchange ideas & celebrate special occasions such as the opening of an exhibition (Penrose Picasso 117). The walls of the café were lined with work by artists that were used as payment for debts. Theatrical entertainment was a prominent part of Picasso's social life in Paris. By 1904, Picasso had established a foothold in Paris and would remain in the cultural center of Europe for the rest of his life. Picasso & Max Jacob cultivated their talents in a dwelling known as the Bateau Lavoir. According to Penrose, this place was ". . . composed it seemed of nothing but lofts & cellars, all in such a sad state of repair. . . " (Picasso 96). Artists of all endeavors were attracted to this bohemian style of living. Picasso's neighbors included painters, sculptors, writers & actors (Penrose Picasso 102). One of Picasso's most influential friends entered his life in 1905: Guillaume Apollinaire. "From the first encounter, Pablo Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire established a creative dialogue that fostered and inspired some of their finest art & poetry". Apollinaire was a poet & playwright, identified as a Surrealist, who kept close connections with literary & artistic figures in Paris including Max Jacob & André Salmon. He was a great source for Picasso to meet writers & theatre artists. Many of Picasso's friends encouraged him to frequent the theatre with artists & poets from Paris (Picasso Penrose 177). Even though Picasso was not in Paris, he managed to find groups of artistic individuals to stay abreast of cultural gossip & happenings. Picasso's connections with writers led him to create several illustrations for books of poetry for friends. For example, during summer 1910 in Cadaques, Catalonia, painting with Derain, Picasso was commissioned to illustrate a poetic novel written by Max Jacob titled Saint Matorel issued by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler in 1911. (Penrose Picasso 179). This was only the first of five collections of poetry by Max Jacob that contained illustrations by Picasso. Picasso's illustrations were Cubist representations of the text which included people & places from Jacob's novel. Creating designs based on text & synopses foreshadows his work with the theatre. Picasso's close association with writing, particularly poetry, was also an influence on his work when he turned to playwriting. During the war, Picasso continued to frequent the café terraces to meet old & new friends. Artists & writers were still in attendance, but they mingled with those returning from the war front. Max Jacob was one of the few who stayed in Paris during the war; his health kept him from being part of the military. By 1943, Picasso had set eyes on a new model. Her name was Françoise Gilot. She was a young painter, writer, & critic. Françoise became Picasso's lover in 1945; they remained together for almost a decade. Just before Picasso began his affair with Françoise, he suffered the loss of yet another friend. During the spring of 1944, Picasso learned of the death of Max Jacob. Picasso proudly attended his memorial service. "The poet had been arrested, for no other reason than that he was born a Jew, at the Abbey of Saint-Benoît where he had lived as a lay brother for many years. He was sent to a concentration camp at Drancy where he died shortly after" (Penrose Picasso 357). . Signed by Author(s). Original Litho.

Liberalism and Socialism by Winston S. Churchill, bound in 1910 General Election Set of Leaflets

London: The Liberal Publications Department, 1910. 1st Edition. Paperback. Very good. This very early and scarce Churchill speech pamphlet is typically found either removed from a bound volume or bound in the Liberal Publications Department's compilation volume for the year 1908. Here is the first edition, only printing of this speech bound instead in the Liberal Publications Department's bound Set of Leaflets for the 1910 General Election. In 1910 Winston Churchill was a young lion of the Liberal Party and an increasingly powerful progressive political force. Following the 1910 General Election Churchill was promoted from President of the Board of Trade to Home Secretary. Churchill's "Liberalism and Socialism" speech defining the difference between Liberalism and Socialism was given in Dundee on 4 May 1908. "Liberalism is not Socialism... It is not only a gulf of method, it is a gulf of principle... Socialism seeks to pull down wealth; Liberalism seeks to raise up poverty. Socialism would destroy private property; Liberalism would preserve private interests... by reconciling them with public right..." This 4 page paper pamphlet dated "15/6/08" was, of course, also published by the Liberal Publication Department and printed by Strangeways & Sons. The volume in which the speech is bound is features printed orange-brown paper wraps over a wire stitched binding. The volume measures 8.5 inches x 5.5 inches and is just over half an inch thick. Besides Liberalism and Socialism, the volume contains a host of pamphlets and leaflets published in the run up to the General election, many of which are unlikely to now be found anywhere else given their fragility and ephemeral nature. The condition of the bound volume is very good given its age and the fragile paper wraps. There is some soiling to the wraps, some wear at the corners, and some splits along the hinges, the longest being 1 inch at the base of the front hinge. Nonetheless, the fragile paper wraps are complete and still firmly attached to the contents. The contents slightly age-toned but otherwise clean and tight. Protected in a removable, archival mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A24, Woods A13

The Modern Practice of Shipbuilding in Iron and Steel

London and Glasgow: Collin's Clear-Type Press,, 1910. 2 volumes octavo (215 × 134 mm) text volume with quarto (261 × 208 mm) atlas of plates, both in original blue cloth on bevelled boards, title gilt to the spines and also within black panels to the upper boards together with a gilt block of a ship frame on the stocks. 57 plates, 15 of them double-page. A little shelf-wear at spine-ends and corner-tips, 4 pages of the prefatory material bound out of order, endpapers little browned, but in exceptional condition. Fourth and final edition, "Shipbuilding has … progressed so greatly since this book was first written [1886] that it is no longer possible to bring it up to-date by a mere revision … nothing short of practically re-writing the book and replacing many obsolete Plates with new ones, could satisfactorily meet the requirements of the case" (author's preface). At the time of publication Thearle was chief surveyor to Lloyd's Register of Shipping. He had entered Devonport Dockyard as a shipwright apprentice at the age of 14, one of his fellows being the future Sir William White. In 1865 they were both included in the group selected by the Admiralty to undergo the 3 year course of study at the newly-formed Royal School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at South Kensington. In 1872 Thearle became a draughtsman at the Admiralty, and in 1876 he offered himself as a candidate for a surveyorship in the service of Lloyd's Register, subsequently serving successfully at Greenock, London, Bristol, Glasgow and Newcastle. In 1900 he was transferred to London as assistant to the chief surveyor, succeeding to the surveyorship in 1909. He died in 1913. Unusual in this condition.

        Mr. Churchill on the Peers

The Liberal Publications Department (in connection with the National Liberal Federation and the Liberal Central Association), London 1910 - Here is the scarce first edition, only printing of Churchill's letter to his constituents of 14 November 1910. This letter addressed to Sir George Ritchie was published by the Liberal Publication Department as a single-sheet, double-sided "Leaflet No. 2358" on 18 November 1910, measuring 8 x 5.25 inches. In 1910 Winston Churchill was a young lion of the Liberal Party, vexing the British establishment and helping Lloyd George lay the foundations of the modern welfare state. Churchill's 14 November speech is in vehement opposition to the veto power of the House of Lords. This leaflet captures the young radical Churchill in full flower. "Was ever inequality more scandalous? Was ever injustice more glaring? All classes are to have votes; but only Tory votes are to count. WE CAN SUBMIT NO LONGER TO THIS USAGE. THIS IS OUR LAND AS MUCH AS IT IS THEIRS." The small number of original Churchill leaflets and pamphlets available to collectors from the Pre-WWI decade beginning in 1904 frequently owe their survival to the fact that they were bound in annual compilations by the Liberal Publication Department. This leaflet appears to have been disbound, but is in superlative condition - crisp and bright with no spotting or markings of any kind and with only slight wrinkling along the left edge. The leaflet is protected by a black hard case stamped in gilt on the front cover that completely enfolds the pamphlet within. The case is in perfect condition, with a previous owner bookplate on the inside front cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A33.1, Woods A18. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

ORIGINAL ART: ANOTHER OUTLINE, OR THE STRANGE STORY OF DENNIS THE O'CE

SMITH,E.BOYD. ORIGINAL ART: ANOTHER OUTLINE, OR THE STRANGE STORY OF DENNIS O'GEOGHEGAN. Offered here is an original watercolor done by Smith for an unpublished book. Done in the same size and format of his Early Life of Mr. Man, circa 1910. It measures 11 1/2" wide by 9 3/4" high and is matted with the visible image measuring 10" x 8 1/2". The image is a tongue in cheek loo at evolution with a simian (gorilla) portrait side by side with a human portr whose face shows that we haven't evolved too much from the monkeys. O'Geoghe is so clearly an Irish name that this could be Smith's insult, hopefully with good humor rather than with malice. Both portraits are embedded in the evolutionary tree. Below this are various prehistoric animals including dinosaurs and a mastodon. Typical of Smith's work but with more of an edge resulting in a piece that is fun to look at. Smith has a prominent place in t history of American picture books. In the Brooklyn Public Library's on-line exhibit they note that with his first 2 picture books "it immediately established him, along side Howard Pyle and Jessie Willcox Smith as one of America's leading illustrators for the young."

THE HAUNTED ISLAND: A PIRATE ROMANCE

London: Elkin Mathews,. 1910. title page printed in red and black, original maroon cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, fore and bottom edges untrimmed.. Faint glass ring on front cover, endpapers quite foxed, but a solid. very good copy with bright cover stamping. A very scarce book.. (#148230). First edition. The author's first novel. Visiak's "best work shadows SF, horror and fantasy modes, employing speculative metaphysics in a manner similar to the fiction of his friend David Lindsay. In stories of this sort, the consensual word is argued -- sometimes in passages of considerable length - - as being an expression of the dream world, or world of archetypes. Such texts do not easily fit into template definitions of the various genres of the fantastic ... THE HAUNTED ISLAND is clearly fantastic, and engagingly deploys ghosts and magic in a tale of pirates set on a mysterious island in the 17th century." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy, p. 987. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 175. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 219 (describing a similar copy). Bleiler (1978), p. 200. Reginald 14687. See Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 444 for a concise summary of Visiak's contributions to the horror genre.
