No. 1. Haymarket, with photographs and ephemera of Bain's premises at No. 14 King William Street. Manuscript poem by Andrew Lang

SCRAPBOOK. Oblong scrapbook (8 x 10 inches), splashed. Photograph (silvered) pasted in (no caption), along with a newspaper cutting (What's in a Name), a handwritten poem by A Lang, 'A Moving Incident' dated 1910, signed by the author, written on 3 sides, folded, tipped in along blank side. In addition, a fold-out diagram, illustration and plan of Haymarket (includes Bookseller J Bain), 4 clippings from Tallis' London Street Views, double-column clipping of Haymarket, from No.1 to 71, fixed. Loosely inserted: Notice of Removal (1914), 3 order forms for A Bookseller Looks Back, 8 original b/w photographs (2 duplicates) of the exterior and interior of the premises at King William Street. A scrapbook of James Bain the bookseller in Haymarket and King William Street. Manuscript poem by Andrew Lang of 'A Moving Incident (to Lady Ritchie)' tipped in (on the blank side) along the fold, signed by the author and dated 14 July 1910. The author visited W. Bain at 14 Charles Street, Haymarket, where Bain is talking to a 'nursemaid' with a babe in arms and other 'frolicking' children. The author is surprised at this, and only later discovers from Bain that these were the infant great-grandchildren of his literary 'love' Thackeray. Lang is moved at a missed opportunity. Otto pagine in - 4. Sei pagine in - 8.

        My African Journey

Hodder & Stoughton 1910 - This book is from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. This is the 1910 vintage pulp paperback, the so-called "First Cheap Edition." My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. In 1910, just two years after the first edition, the publisher issued a so-called "First Cheap Edition" produced in vintage "pulp" style. The text is arranged in a 92-page, two-column format with a few pages of advertisements at either end. This handsome paperback edition features a color illustration on the front cover similar to that of the first edition, with Churchill in pith helmet with binoculars around his neck and a rifle in his hands standing beside a dead white rhinoceros. Some 20,000 copies were produced, but given the fragility of the edition, very few survive today. And those that do are usually in poor condition - befitting a cheap paperback more than a century old. This copy is an exception, far from fine but still impressively well preserved given the edition. Both covers remain attached. The illustrated front cover remains bright and clean with modest edgewear and minor loss to the lower right corner. The rear cover is a bit stained, with losses at the top and bottom edges to a maximum .5 inch depth. The spine shows a .25 inch loss at the head and 1.75 inches at the bottom. All spine lettering remains intact with the exception of the author's last name. We note no vertical creases to the spine, which, in concert with the overall condition, indicates that this copy was not read. The pulp paper contents are browned as inevitable, but show no spotting or previous ownership marks. The only loss is chipping at the lower front corner, penetrating to page 18.       Salt Lake City: Skelton Publishing Company, [1910]. - First edition. First issue. 8vo. Presentation inscription by the publisher and signed by him. The signature of the publisher is rare, as the Mormon Church must have applied a great deal of pressure on him to discontinue publication and destroy all copies in house. Original dark green decorated cloth, titles on front cover and spine stamped in black ink, 222 pp., frontis. [photograph of E. N. Wilson], preface, illustrated, portraits, plates. Graff 4702: "A good narrative of Rocky Mountain trapping. Uncle Nick crossed the plains by ox-team in 1850, and thenceforth was trapper, Indian fighter, pony express rider, ox-team freighter, overland stage driver, companion of Kit Carson, and adventurer in Utah and through all the Rocky Mountain country. The first issue was rigidly suppressed." Howes W520: "Blunt, unrestrained narrative of a trapper, Indian fighter, etc., of the Rocky Mountains, from Wyoming and Montana to Idaho and Utah. The 247 page reprint omits the account of how he lost his Mormon fiancee [given on pp. 194 to 200 of original edition]." Flake 9909: "This first edition was suppressed as critical of polygamy." Bauer Sale 515: "When the book was in sheets, [quoting Elijah N. Wilson], ready for binding, objection was made to the passage beginning on page 194. Under pressure I rewrote that part and added 25 pages to the original but had 20 copies bound as originally written. These I kept for the members of my family." Wilson was also critical of the church's handling of the Mountain Meadows massacre, and in general their handling of Indian affairs as he was sympathetic to the Indian point of view. Wilson, Wyoming was named in honor of Elijah N. Wilson. Some light professional restoration to spine ends and corners, else near fine, bright, tight copy, housed in a decorated cloth clamshell case with titles stamped in black on the spine. A rare book with the rare unexpurgated tale. GRAFF 4702. HOWES W520. FLAKE 9909. STREETER SALE 3093. EBERSTADT MODERN NARRATIVES 532. BAUER SALE 515. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London, Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., No. 970, circa 1910.FIRST EDITION circa 1910, 6 panel panorama of thick board pages hinged with red cloth, colour printed both sides, a separate story on each side, both illustrated by Wain, brief caption below each picture, all dressed kittens, page size 235 x 180 mm, 9¼ x 7 inches. LACKING COVER BOARD PAGE WITH TITLES (i.e. 5 of 6 panels only). The images for Three Little Kittens were re - used in a painting book issued about the same time by Tuck with the No. 4063. The story on the reverse of the panorama is a cats version of 5 Struwwelpeter stories: Fidgety Philip on the floor under the table cloth and the tea things; the three kittens inked by Agrippa cat for mocking the Blackamoor; John who never looked where he was going and almost drowned in a stream; a version of the Huntsman where a hare with a rifle shoots at 2 cats, 1 sitting on the well; finally, a kitten disobeys his mother and sucks his thumb but with no nasty consequences. A Louis Wain cat version of Struwwelpeter was published by Tuck circa 1905 entitled Fidgety Phil and Other Tales, in the Little Pets series, with 16 pages including covers and with verses by Norman Gale. Hinges slightly worn with some small splits, a few very minor marks to some pages and some hinges, small closed tear to surface paper at edge of 1 image (we have found our mittens), neatly repaired with no loss, barely visible. A good defective copy of a rare book (lacking 1 board page). Neither the Three Little Kitten Painting Book nor our Panorama, nor Fidgety Phil are listed in the bibliography in the reissue of the Dale book on Wain. The painting book is not uncommon but we could not find a record of our panorama. Fidgety Phil is listed in Baumgartner Volume 1, page 24, No.29 and 1 copy is recorded in Liverpool University Library and 1 in Toronto Public Library but not in the Osborne catalogue.         [The equation of state for gases and liquids.] Autograph manuscript in German of his Nobel Lecture

, 1910. 1910. <p>Autograph Manuscript of van der Waals&#39;s Nobel Lecture</p><p>Waals, Johannes Diderik van der (1837-1923). [The equation of state for gases and liquids.] Autograph manuscript in German, written in ink with ink and pencil emendations; marked for use as printer&#39;s copy. 24ff. 210 x 171 mm. Light toning, small marginal dampstain on last leaf, left margins a bit frayed minimally affecting text, but very good. </p><p>Original Manuscript of van der Waals&#39;s Nobel lecture, delivered in December 1910. ). Holograph manuscripts of Nobel lectures are very rare, and this is an exceptionally early example from a major figure in the history of modern physics. </p><p>Van der Waals was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics that year for his work on the equation of state of gases and liquids, in particular for the "van der Waals equation" approximating the behavior of real fluids, introduced in his classic 1873 dissertation on the continuity of gaseous and liquid states.</p><p>Van der Waals&#39; idea of continuity was that there is no essential difference between gaseous and liquid states of matter, although one must consider other factors in addition to motion of the molecules in the determination of pressure. The important factors are the attraction between particles and their proper volume. . . . From these considerations van der Waals arrived at the equation</p> <p>p + a/v2 ) (v-b) = RT</p> <p>where a expresses the mutual attraction of the molecules, and b is their volume. . . . Other experimenters have suggested different models and equations of state, but van der Walls&#39;s model is probably the most useful because it emphasizes the essential features of molecules that determine liquidity, without introducing too many &#39;realistic&#39; complications. . . . An important practical application of the theory is the prediction of conditions necessary for the liquefaction of a gas; this was an important guide in the liquefaction of the &#39;permanent&#39; gases" (Weber, Pioneers of Science, p. 41; see also p. 40). </p><p>In his Nobel lecture van der Waals summarized his life&#39;s work on equation of state theory, describing how he had come to formulate the van der Waals equation and the equation&#39;s experimental corroboration by Sydney Young, an event that had given van der Waals "great joy." "The laureate went on to detail his most recent work, which he termed &#39;pseudo association&#39; (the &#39;van der Waals force&#39;) to distinguish it from chemical bonding. The only way to achieve agreement between the equation of state and laboratory data, he maintained, was to postulate the existence of large complexes of molecules, especially in liquids. . . . In the conclusion to his address, van der Waals said, &#39;In all my studies I was quite convinced of the real existence of molecules . . . I never regarded them as a figment of my imagination, nor even as mere centers of force effects.&#39; He noted that &#39;the real existence of molecules is universally assumed by physicists,&#39; and that his theory &#39;may have been a contributing factor" (Magill, The Nobel Prize Winners: Physics, pp. 150-51.</p>

        The People&#39;s Rights

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First edition, first printing. Paperback. Very good. This is the first edition, first state of this striking, scarce, and fragile early collection of Churchill&#39;s speeches.  In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class.  In 1910, when The People&#39;s Rights was published, Winston Churchill was a powerful political force and a member of the Cabinet.  From December 3-11, 1909 Churchill was on the campaign trail on behalf of the Liberals.  The People&#39;s Rights is a distillation of these nine days of speeches, criticizing the House of Lords (which had rejected the Liberal Government&#39;s budget, thus precipitating the campaign) and championing Free Trade, a graduated income tax, luxury tax, and surtaxes on unearned income.  Churchill&#39;s efforts were not wasted; as a result of the election, the Liberals would achieve a slim majority and passage of their budget.  The People&#39;s Rights was published in an exceptionally perishable form, in bright yellow-orange paper wraps (with a halftone photo of Churchill on the cover) and printed on cheap, pulp paper.  Consequently few copies survive, and wear, losses, and general deterioration are common to those copies that endure.  There are two states of this first and only printing.  The first state features an Appendix and an Index (at pages 149-152), while the second replaces the Index with a second Appendix.  Here is the desirable first edition, first state.  Given the inherent fragility of the edition, this copy is in quite respectable condition, about very good minus for the edition with some of the typical aging and wear, but substantially complete nonetheless.  The covers remain attached, the front cover firmly, the rear holding despite a 5.5 inch separation at the rear hinge.  The color, which understandably often dulls, remains fairly bright on both covers, somewhat toned on the spine.  The spine is more complete than many copies we see, with the usual wrinkling from the binding process, but with nearly all of the spine print intact despite modest overall chipping.  Both covers show only minor chipping to the edges, with the illustrated front cover notably complete.  The contents are browned and brittle as usual.  We note no previous ownership marks and light spotting appears confined to the half title.  There are modest triangular losses to the lower corners of the half title and title pages and some small edge chips to the Appendix and Index pages.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A31.2.a, Woods/ICS A16(aa), Langworth p.97

        The Lilac Fairy Book

London, New York, Bombay and Calcutta: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1910. London, New York, Bombay and Calcutta: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1910. With 6 coloured plates and numerous illustrations by H. J. Ford. Octavo. Original lilac cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board, all edges gilt. Colour frontispiece, vignette engraved title page, 5 colour plates, 20 engraved plates, illustrations throughout. Cloth faded as almost always, spine more so with a little tanning, some partial toning to end leaves but internally very fresh, a nice copy, sound, clean and in very good condition. First edition, first impression, of the final title in Lang&#39;s Fairy Book series. Lang takes the opportunity in this final preface to disavow once again his authorship of these fairytales (they were almost entirely translated from early sources by Mrs. Lang), and indeed to say "Nobody can write a new fairy tale...the thing is impossible... the three hundred and sixty-five authors who try to write new fairy tales are very tiresome. They always begin with a little boy or girl who goes out and meets the fairies of polyanthuses and gardenias and apple blossoms... These fairies try to be funny, and fail; or they try to preach, and succeed. Real fairies never preach or talk slang. At the end, the little boy or girl wakes up and finds that he has been dreaming. Such are the new fairy stories. May we be preserved from all the sort of them! Our stories are almost all old, some from Ireland, before that island was as celebrated for her wrongs as for her verdure; some from Asia, made, I dare say, before the Aryan invasion; some from Moydart, Knoydart, Morar and Ardnamurchan, where the sea streams run like great clear rivers and the saw-edged hills are blue, and men remember Prince Charlie. Some are from Portugal, where the golden fruits grow in the Garden of the Hesperides; and some are from wild Wales, and were told ar Arthur&#39;s Court; and other come from the firesides of the kinsmen of the Welsh, the Bretons..."

The photograph of a gentleman, slightly smaller in size, is annotated by Reed in pencil on the verso identifying the man as Dr. Dobay at the Ritz Hotel. The photograph of Reed and his wife Bryant is slightly larger and depicts them standing and hugging on a porch, likely in Provincetown, with no writing on the verso. The European photographs were most likely taken by Reed during the summer of 1910 when he traveled to Europe following his graduation from Harvard. Perhaps the best known left-wing American journalist of the twentieth century; Reed was portrayed by Warren Beatty in the film REDS, nominated for twelve Academy Awards and winner of three, which centered on Reed&#39;s life, notably his romance with Louise Bryant, played by Diane Keaton, and his early death at 33 in Moscow. Reed&#39;s best known book, TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD, is Reed&#39;s firsthand account of the October Revolution in Russia in 1917.

        Peggy and Teddy

London: Dean & Son, c. 1910 London: Dean & Son, c. 1910. Tall quarto. 12 ff. First edition. Illustrated throughout in color and black-and-white by Gladys Hall and Eugenie Richards. Series of poems that follow the activities of the cherubic Peggy and Teddy. The artwork by Hall and Richards are dramatically similar to that of Grace Drayton, who created the Campbell's Soup kids. Hall worked primarily for Dean, and not much is know about her or Richards. Either because of its size, or construction, this book is quite rare, with no copies known to be held at any institution. In publisher's pictorial dark blue cloth over beveled boards, which show some faint edgewear. Archival repairs to wrinkles and tears along margins, text block likely recased. Overall, a very good copy.

A photographically illustrated typescript describing and depicting the operations of the Copper Creek Mining Company in Southeastern Arizona]

      - [Copper Creek, Arizona: [circa 1910-1915]. Small 8vo. (approximately 7 x 4 inches). 39 gelatin silver print photographs (approximately 3 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches each), includes a couple duplicate images. The typescript 28pp, recto only. [With:] A blueprint assay map of the Old Reliable Mine. Period sheep three-ring binder. Early industrial photographs of mining operations in Arizona. The photographs show mine and town buildings, machinery, settlers, and views from the mountains of the settlement of Copper Creek in Pinal County, Arizona. Copper Creek, its mines and town are located in the Galiuro mountains in the South East corner of Pinal County near Arivaipa Valley. This area produced silver as early as 1863, when ore was hauled to Yuma and shipped to Wales for reduction. Despite the relatively rich ore, factors including the remoteness of the area, the cost of transporting the ore, and the threat of Indians combined to limit mining activity in Copper Creek. But at the turn of the century, as interest in extending railroads to other mines and towns in eastern Pinal County brought the potential of carrying ore by rail, interest in Copper Creek rose once again. The Copper Creek Mining Company was organized in 1903, and in its first two years of operation yielded 49,000 pounds of copper. A narrow gauge railroad was constructed in 1912, and one of the images depicts the small locomotive being hauled overland by a team of horses. The Company went bankrupt in 1914. The present notes accompanying the photographs are of a promotional nature, envisioning the future of the settlement, perhaps as a way of attracting investors. It would seem likely that the photographs and typescript were produced for some official Company purpose. An early example of American industrial vernacular photography, of the sort which would have profound influence on a host of artists and photographers of the New Objectivity Movement.

        The Grammar of Ornament

Bernard Quoritch, London 1910 - Quoritch, London, 1910. Contemporary publisher's maroon cloth hardcover, elaborate gilt to spine and cover. 112 colour plates, many tissue guarded. Book and spine edges chipped and some foxing and spotting to endpapers. Beautifully illuminated title page and very vivid colour plates drawn on stone, near fine. Folio edition, 9.5" x 13" tall. Very heavy. This very important and remarkable book helped pioneer modern colour theories and is the definitive source book of ornamental motifs and designs. The author, Owen Jones, travelled the world in his 20s and faithfully reproduced ornamental decoration drawings and even made casts in places such as the Alhambra Palace, to ensure perfect accuracy. Designs from Persia, Greece, Spain, India, China, Italy and England all included here. An essential reference book for jewellery, fashion, textiles and interior design which is still totally relevant today. A beautiful, rare and very well preserved edition, and even more rare to find in this condition and at this price. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Die Weltwanderer [Signed / Unterzeichnet 2X by Gjellerup and 2X by Brandes; Excellent Association Copy] [Verdens vandrerne; The World Travelers; The World Wanderer]

Dresden: Wilhelm Baensch, 1910. Dresden: Wilhelm Baensch, 1910. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of this Karl Gjellerup novel in two volumes, in the Publisher&#39;s original tan linen flexible boards, SIGNED / UNTERZEICHNET TWICE BY KARL GJELLERUP (once on the half title of Volume 1 and once on the title page of Volume 2), ALSO SIGNED / UNTERZEICHNET TWICE BY GEORG BRANDES (once on each Volume&#39;s front free endpaper); AN EXCELLENT ASSOCIATION COPY (with the front board of Volume 2 showing a few quite small light stains to its lower portion, and a few stray marks to its yapped front edge). Scholar, Novelist, and Poet Karl Gjellerup was born in Denmark in 1857 and died in his adopted land of Germany in 1919, winning the 1917 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his varied and rich poetry, which is inspired by lofty ideals", sharing the Prize half-and-half with his fellow native Dane Henrik Pontoppidan. Early in his career, Gjellerup belonged to the naturalist school and was an enthusiastic supporter of the naturist movement and of the famed Danish Critic and Scholar Georg Brandes -- one of the most important and influential men in Literature from the 1870s through the early 20th Century and the primary theorist behind the breakthrough of naturalism in Scandinavia (typically referred to as the "Modernist Movement"), to whom the volumes herein described certainly belonged. Eventually, however, Gjellerup broke with the naturalists and became instead a romanticist author employing idealism in his work. In connection with the Prize presentation to Gjellerup, noted Swedish critic Sven Söderman cited the novel as Gjellerup&#39;s "last great work", noting that "with its half-Oriental, half-western moral, ... it contains beautiful details and holds our interest through a mysticism full of imagination as much as through the development of the action." In the Biographical information, which he prepared in connection with the Prize award, Gjellerup categorized "Die Weltwanderer" as being one of his Poetic novels --- such Poetic novels being "Der Pilger Kamanita" (1906) [The Pilgrim Kamanita], "Die Weltwanderer"(1910) [The World Traveller], "Der goldene Zweig" (1917) [The Golden Bough], and "Die Gottesfreunde" (1916) [The Friends of God] --- and stated that these Poetic novels "belong chiefly to German literature" and that they "...have found their true understanding and appreciation almost exclusively in Germany". The novel was published both in Germany (as "Die Weltwanderer") and in Denmark (as "Verdens vandrerne") in 1910. However, as Gjellerup, who married a German woman, himself cited the work by its German name, noted that it belonged primarily to German literature and found its true understanding and appreciation among the German people, and as he came to see himself much more as a German than as a Dane, the German edition is by far the more important of the two. [In fact, Gjellerup&#39;s receipt of the Prize was not celebrated in his Danish homeland as he was seen there to be primarily a German writer.] Signed copies of Gjellerup&#39;s works in any edition and in any translation are quite scarce. Our most recent review of the auction records revealed no signed copies of his works having come to auction.] A Fine ASSOCIATION COPY of the first, and most important, German edition, SIGNED / UNTERZEICHNET TWICE BY KARL GJELLERUP and ALSO SIGNED / UNTERZEICHNET TWICE BY GEORG BRANDES. A RARE AND NOTABLE SET INDEED.
