[N.p. ca. 1910].. Sixteen gelatin prints, each approximately 3 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches. Gray paper-covered boards, string-bound, gilt on front cover. Light surface wear to the photos, creasing to some corners, else in excellent condition. A lovely collection of vernacular photography from a highly interesting period of Alaskan history, chronicling the territory in the years just after the Klondike Gold Rush. Subjects of the individual photographs include sled dogs, a harbor scene, a great street scene on the occasion of a patriotic parade, miners at work on a large sluice, fishermen and their boat, a couple of shots featuring the Yukon steamboat Selkirk, an early automobile, campers, Native Americans, a log house, a street scene showing log buildings, and more. From the types of vehicles shown, the images date from the early twentieth century, no earlier than 1905 since the Arcade Cafe featured in one of the photos opened then and no later than 1920 since the Selkirk steamboat sank in that year.

London: [Printed at the Riccardi Press for] Philip Lee Warner, Publisher to the Medici Society, 1910. No. 426 OF 500 COPIES on paper (and 12 on vellum, 10 for sale) n. Hardcover. Of Considerable Pictorial Interest in its Illustration, Binding, and Provenance. 270 x 210 mm (10 5/8 x 8 1/4"). Four volumes. After the text of William Caxton, modernized and edited by Alfred W. Pollard. No. 426 OF 500 COPIES on paper (and 12 on vellum, 10 for sale). EXCELLENT NAVY BLUE CRUSHED MOROCCO BY BIRDSALL (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in), EACH FRONT COVER WITH LARGE AND ELABORATE INLAID PICTORIAL PANEL IN MULTIPLE COLORS based on one of W. Russell Flint's illustrations of scenes from the story, raised bands, spine compartments delicately framed in gilt and with central lozenge of fleurons, gilt titling, turn-ins decoratively gilt, navy silk endleaves, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. With (slightly worn) matching fleece-lined chemises and slipcases. Engraved title pages with lettering by Miss M. Engall and with figures of Launcelot, Arthur, and Guinevere; and 48 color plates by Flint mounted on heavy stock and with captioned tissue guards. Verso of front free endleaf with bookplate of M. C. Gaines (see below); extra original paper labels tipped onto rear flyleaf in each volume. Spines slightly and evenly darkened, but IN VERY FINE CONDITION, quite clean, fresh, and bright internally, and the delightful bindings lustrous and unworn. This is a deluxe privately printed edition of the Arthurian legends, with very pleasing color plates and beautifully executed pictorial bindings by one of the longest operating binderies in England. Written in the 15th century by Thomas Malory (ca. 1405-71) and first printed by Caxton in 1485, the sweeping "Morte d'Arthur" is an English version (despite the title) of earlier chivalric tales in French. It includes the youth of King Arthur, the romance of Guinevere and Launcelot, the quest for the Grail, and the tragedy of Tristram and Iseult. PMM says that this text, the most famous version of all the Arthurian legends, is nothing less than "the matter of England." And Malory's "style, the humor, the magnificence, that magic that takes away the breath, combine in a masterpiece of legendary narrative." Sir William Russell Flint (1880-1969) produced a series of luxury editions for the Riccardi Press of the Medici Society between 1905-24, a series Houfe calls "brilliant." Flint's figures, says Houfe, "are finely modeled and contain elements of a Burne-Jones influence by way of Byam Shaw." The illustrations here are particularly reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites and their Medieval subjects. The Birdsall bindery was established in 1792 when William Birdsall acquired the Northampton bindery of John Lacy, and the highly respected family operation continued for more than 150 years, the firm finally closing in 1961. The bindery was at times quite large: in 1899, its staff was reported to number as many as 250 (though some of these employees were involved in manufacturing the company's other products--ladies' handbags, fancy boxes, and stationery). In the foremost group of English provincial binderies, the Birdsall firm consistently executed bindings with considerable skill, and their work was often animated, imaginative, and even experimental in design. Protected in their chemises and slipcases, our bindings look much the same today as they did the day they left the bindery. This set's evocative pictures and graphically intriguing bindings surely held great appeal for former owner M. C. "Max" Gaines (1894-1947), a pioneer in the creation of comic books. As a salesman with Eastern Color Printing, he put together the proto-comic book, "Funnies on Parade," by assembling Sunday comic strips into a booklet form. In 1938, he co-founded All-American Publications, which gave the world the Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman, and later established Educational Comics, which issued comic book versions of stories from history or the Bible.

        Roadtown Foreword by Julian Hawthorne

New York: Roadtown Press, 1910. 172p., very good hardcover with lovely color illustration on front board, minor wear to corners and ends of spine (no fraying or card showing), spine lettering bright. Light pencil bookdealer notes on front blank end paper. First edition, in the scarce dustjacket with light soiling, minor chipping at head and tail of spine along with a few short closed tears and light chipping edges. *Negley 192. Hanna 655. Sargent p. 76. Describes, in great detail, Chambless' utopian concept of a city laid out along rail lines, with a farm plot adjacent to each dwelling, and direct access to underground transit. The dirt and distraction of above-ground roads would become a thing of the past, as would the exploitation and corruption of companies involved in transportation-related industries. Housework and cooking would be reorganized along cooperative lines, and factory work would be decentralized into cottage industries whose products could be transported, again, through the rail lines directly underground. Cover illustration gives an impression of the intended layout. The corporate monopolies that bedeviled Chambless' era, the railroads in particular, would be undermined by cooperative ownership of this new form of settlement. The emphasis on homes without kitchens, and the reduction in housework achieved by removal of above-ground roads and their dust, has caught the attention of modern feminist historians such as Dolores Hayden. In some respects Chambless' design presages elements of the plans for the Llano colony, which sought to move much of its transportation infrastructure underground (a goal left unfulfilled).

      - NY, Roadtown Press [1910]. Octavo publisher's cloth blocked in white with an onlaid colour illustration; [6],172pp. A little flaking of the white blocking, an excellent copy. The deluxe issue. For an extra ten cents ($1.35 against $1.25 for plain) you coud buy this with the cover illustration hand coloured. Now one of the more arcane and elusive utopian schemes for a new kind of city, leading to a new society. Roadtown is a ribbon, the extreme lineal city. At the bottom, underground, is the railway - noiseless and smokeless - above come housing, work and communal areas - each home with its own plot of land - and at the top is a promenade. In short the perfect blend of the virtues of city and country. What surprises from this distance is how much apparently sensible support Chambless garnered. Construction was to be prefabricated concrete and Edison donated his patents; transport was by monorail and Boyes donated his patents; there was a pretty impressive list of people lending their efforts, both practical and rhetorical. Ten mile stretches of experimental or exhibition Roadtown seemed likely, even imminent, for years but Chambless beavered away at Roadtown for almost forty years, until his death in 1936, to wind up virtually forgotten.         R. H. Murphy Cookery Book

Full Leather. Very Good. A manuscript cookbook probably from a grand country house in Edwardian England. N.d., circa 1910. [9], 84 pp. With well over 300 recipes! Mulligtawn soup, palestine soup, becamel of chicken, Ketcherei with Finnan Haddock, lobster a la Neuberg, a breakfast cold chicken cream in aspic, Neapolitan eggs, hashed mutton, beef galantine, sardine fritters, devils on horseback, angels on horseback, Welsh rabbit, Mrs. Dunsmuir's Prize cake, Sally Lunn, Jessica's eggless cake, a faroli souffle, chocolate drops -- this is a small sampling of the dishes whose names jumped off the page to this reader, whether because they are unknown and exotic, or they seemed somehow quintessential to a country house occasion. A good number of the recipes bear the first or last name of a person, and this probably indicates the original source of the recipe. It can also be deduced from the comprehensiveness and length of the book that Murphy was a professional cook in a grand house. No ordinary housewife, nor a servant in a less august setting, is likely to have had her recipes collected in such a project. It is likely that at least part of the purpose of this book was to impart technique as well as much beloved dishes to other staff members and/or successors. After the nine page table of contents, listing all the recipes, there are three pages of miscellaneous remarks on cooking followed by sections on soups, fish, breakfast dishes, joints and meats, sweets and puddings, iced sweets, sweets and puddings and desserts again, savouries, vegetables, sauces, liquids, juices and jams and cakes and breads. Missing, although referred to in the index, is a section on knitting. Desserts, or sweets, are the vast majority of recipes. Most of the sheets are carbon, with a few the original, and most sheets have a few corrections of typos done by hand. Light soiling and wear to the typed leaves. A few are now loose in the binding.

        (1) Autograph manuscript signed of her closing address to the 1983 Pugwash Conference, corrected throughout in Hodgkin's hand

<p>Hodgkin, Dorothy Crowfoot (1910-94). (1) Autograph manuscript signed of her closing address to the 1983 Pugwash Conference, corrected throughout in Hodgkin&#39;s hand. August 31, 1983. 4ff. 298 x 211 mm. Small rust-marks from paper clip on first and last leaves. (2) Photograph of a group including Hodgkin, Linus Pauling, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the mayor of Hiroshima, taken at Hiroshima in 1988. 83 x 116 mm. Signed and annotated by Hodgkin.</p><p>Signed manuscript in the hand of Nobel Laureate Dorothy Hodgkin, who received the 1964 Nobel Prize in chemistry for her work on determining, by X-ray diffraction techniques, the molecular structures of penicillin, vitamin B-12, insulin and other important biochemical compounds. Hodgkin was the first Englishwoman to receive the Nobel Prize in chemistry and the third woman overall, following Marie Curie and Irène Joliot-Curie.</p><p>Hodgkin involved herself in a wide range of humanitarian and peace-promoting causes, and actively sought to curb the destructive uses of science by the military. From 1976 to 1988 she served as the President of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, an international organization of scientists, scholars and public figures working toward reducing the danger of armed conflict. Her closing address for the 1983 Pugwash Conference, held that year in Venice, Italy, looks back at the previous 25 years of the organization&#39;s efforts "to prevent the worst catastrophe so far," and describes the current meeting&#39;s discussions on arms control, disarmament and other pressing concerns: </p><p>"Security was a problem in all groups [of the conference] and particularly in III and V where conflicts in the Mediterranean and Middle East and in the third world were considered. How to resolve long and bitter conflicts was the major problem. . . . Several of the groups discussed the foundation of new nuclear free zones, which to all seem desirable whether formed through the MPT treaty or outside it. Our presence in Venice led us also to consider the particular dangers that appear in the Mediterranean Sea through conflicting interests and naval forces. Major scientific projects that will bring people from different countries together in cooperative efforts-many together may remove mountains [that] are needed to secure peace."</p><p>The photograph accompanying Hodgkin&#39;s manuscript shows her seated in a group that includes fellow Nobel Laureates Linus Pauling (Chemistry, 1954; Peace, 1962) and Desmond Tutu (Peace, 1984). Hodgkin signed the photograph and identified some of the subjects on the verso. </p>

        Autograph Musical Quotation Signed

1910 - ("Eric Wolfgang Korngold") 1 page, 8vo, London, July 18, 1910, written on the verso of a title cover of a program being the opening three bars of Der Schneemann, minor edgewear, else fine. A rare item from his early period with more legible early signature. Erich Wolfgang Korngold was a child prodigy who, before he reached 10 years, was called a "musical genius" by Gustav Mahler. His ballet Der Schneemann, which he wrote wen he was 11, was much lauded when it was played at the Vienna Court Opera in 1910. Korngold is most known for his work in Hollywood including the score for The Adventures of Robin Hood, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score, and which is considered one the greatest scores of all time. Korngold (1897-1957) enjoyed great success as one of the most respected and in-demand film composers of the 1930s and 1940s. Nominated for a total of four Academy Awards, Korngold won two, for Anthony Adverse (1936) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A New Modification of the Cloud Method of Determining the Elementary Electrical Charge and the most probable value of that Charge [ Millikan's Balanced-Droplet Experiment - Foundation for Oil Drop Experiment ]

Taylor and Francis, London 1910 - First Edition. viii, [1]-924 pages plus 13 folding plates bound in rear. 8vo. Attractively bound in 3/4 leather over marbled boards. Marbled endpapers and page edges. A few small blemishes to the leather, bright and clean internally. Pages 209-228 contain the article "A new modification of the cloud method of determining the elementary electrical charge and the most probable value of that Charge," a key work in physics and electricity. IN The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine, Volume XIX, Sixth Series, February 1910, pp 209-228. A fine addition to any physics, Nobel Prize, or science collection. Boards. Often falsely cited as containing "Millikan's Oil Drop Experiment", this article documents Millikan's "balanced-droplet" experiment which predates his famous oil drop experiment. This paper is the first to reproducably and accurately show the unitary nature of electrical charge (which produced an accurate measurement of the charge of an electron for the first time). Experimental methods previous to his work created wildly differing measurements during repeated attempts. The balanced droplet method required the creation and use of water drops which were given an electrical charge, and then studied as they were influenced by a known magnetic field. This paper is fundamentally important. Millikan in his autobiography notes that this paper established the "first definite, sharp, unambigous proof that electricity was definitely unitary in structure and that it only appeared in exact multiples of that unit." effectively allowing the measurement of the electrical charge. Later work (including his oil drop experiment) refined the experimental measurement techniques and the value of the charge of an electron. Millikan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1923 "for his work on the elementary charge of electricity and on the photoelectric effect". Millikan showed that the charge was "always an integral multiple of an irreproducible value." He arrived at a value for e in 1909 that he considered accurate to within 2 percent. "This result provided the most persuasive evidence yet that electrons were fundamental particles of identical charge and mass". In 1913 he published the value for the electronic charge 4.774 +/- .009 x 10 (-10) e.s.u. "which would serve the world of science for a generation" " (see DSB 9/10 pp 395-396). A very fine set in the original pale blue dust jackets, printed in red."Of the three great political upheavals which have altered the face of the world - the American, French and Russian Revolutions - only the French Revolution has stimulated literary masterpieces which, in turn, have made their impact, direct and indirect, upon millions of readers. They are Carlyle's book and . Michelet's. Carlyle wrote his French Revolution as a secular 'tract for the times' and as a warning for his compatriots of the frightful consequences of materialism, utilitarianism, and democracy. The book at once captured the English-speaking world, and has, outside France, moulded the popular conception of the French Revolution down to the present day" (PMM).Edmund Joseph Sullivan (1869-1933) was a British book illustrator who worked in a style which merged the British tradition of illustration from the 1860s with aspects of Art Nouveau. He was only 20 years old when he began contributing to various magazines including the Daily Chronicle, The Daily Graphic, The Pall Mall Gazette and Punch magazine. He soon graduated to the more prestigious role of book illustrator. Sullivan's style is comparable to that of Aubrey Beardsley, but is more romantic, without Beardley's acerbic attitude. Sullivan adapted his style to use the faux-Rococo techniques he had developed in order to combine them with bizarre images of strange fantastical figures, drawing on the genre of the grotesque. Sullivan also illustrated Carlyle's The French Revolution, using the same combination of Rococo and Grotesque to emphasize the violence erupting into the decorative world of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette's court.Of Edmund J. Sullivan (1869-1933), Gordon N. Ray wrote "Sullivan&#146;s career as an illustrator was one of the most substantial and distinguished in the annals of English art" (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England, p. 187).Cf. PMM 304.
