Album of Vernacular Photographs of Family Life

[no date - circa 1910]. Black cloth photo album. Oblong. Measuring 10" x 7.25". Album contains 21 affixed sepia toned photographs, along with an additional 15 black and white, sepia, or silver print photos laid in, three negatives of a woman on a typewriter, and the personalized handkerchief of Mary A. Pettit. All photos are between 2.5" x 2" and 5.5" x 3.5" and are very good or better with slight edgewear and some creasing. Album has worn corners and rubbing.A prosaic album displaying images of home life, probably from the first decade of the 20th Century, and mostly centered on the activities of women. From the back marks (of the photo studios Bailey and Myers-Cope Company) which appear on some of the loose photographs it can be presumed the families lived somewhere in proximity to Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia. Many of the scenes are of women in fancy hats or perambulating with parasols. Also making an appearance are the occasional men and children, most of whom are posing for portraits, one of a man pretending to drive a car. Among the photos are three negatives of a woman on a typewriter with what appears to be an early Dictaphone-like device. A pleasing album of carefree upper middle class people enjoying the decades before World War and financial hardship would upset the bucolic pace of American life. .

African Game Trails An Account of the African Wanderings of an American Hunter-Naturalist

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1910. First edition. Large octavo, three quarters brown morocco, gilt topstain. Illustrated throughout. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "Inscribed for Elbert-Ellis Linn with the best wishes of Theodore Roosevelt Nov 22nd 1910." Also included are two letters, one from Roosevelt's secretary and the other from the recipient. In very good condition. Housed in a custom clamshell box. A very nice example with provenance. One of the most famous of all big-game hunting epics, this, with its larger than life sportsmen, was almost continuously in print until the 1930s. In British East Africa, Roosevelt hunted lion and plains game on the Kapiti Plains, while, in the Bondoni hill country, he collected rhinoceros and giraffe. On Juja Farm, his son Kermit faced leopard, while Teddy bagged rhino and hippopotamus. On the Kamiti River, buffalo were taken. Near the Sotik, additional rhino and lion were hunted, with elephant bagged near Mt. Kenia. On the Guaso Nyiro, giraffe and a variety of plains game were shot. Further adventures included hunting elephant near Lake Nyanza, rhino and plains game in the Lado, and eland on the Nile. Roosevelt's total bag was enormous even by the liberal standards of that era" (Czech, 138-39).

        My African Journey

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1910. Paperback. This is the 1910 vintage pulp paperback, the so-called "First Cheap Edition." My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. In 1910, two years after the first edition, the publisher issued a so-called "First Cheap Edition" produced in vintage "pulp" style. The text is arranged in a 92-page, two-column format with a few pages of advertisements at either end. This handsome paperback edition features a color illustration on the front cover similar to that of the first edition, with Churchill in pith helmet with binoculars around his neck and a rifle in his hands standing beside a dead white rhinoceros. Some 20,000 copies were produced, but given the fragility of the edition, very few survive today. And those that do are usually in poor condition - befitting a cheap paperback more than a century old. This copy is far from fine, but nonethless quite respectable given the age and inherent fragility of the edition. The covers remain firmly attached with some creasing and minor loss confined to the corners. The spine is substantially complete, with only a .5 inch loss at the head and .25 inch loss at the tail, leaving all spine lettering intact except for the "M" in the title. There is a horizontal closed tear spanning the spine and a short distance adjacent on both covers between "Hon." and "Winston". The contents are age-toned, as is ineveitable given the pulp paper, with minor loss to the corners of the first few pages, but otherwise clean, with no spotting or previous owner names. In original publishers full beige pebbled cloth with illustration of comical king set off against a black background, bold gilt-blocking on cover, blindstamping, beveled boards, silk endsheets. Twelve exquisite mounted color plates highlighted using bold gilt as gold in the illustrations with striking bright colors, by HANS PELLAR. Each page with borders and text opposite illustrations. Printed (and mounted) on extremely thick watercolor paper. Superlatives lacking in describing the quality of this projection, no doubt trying to one-up the German first issue produced in Munich. May 1st, and will want to be delivered to the Big Four loaded again about midnight May 7th at East St. Louis...Our equipment is as follows: 14 coaches, six box, 20 stock, 40 flats, and advertising cars Nos. 1, 2 and 3 and business car Wisconsin. I will be greatly obliged if you will send me the contracts for this movement at your earliest convenience." Note: this rare variety ornate letterhead was first used by the Ringling Brothers in 1909 and featured the images of brothers Al, Otto, Henry, Charles, and John. Upon the death of Otto Ringling at his 5th Avenue mansion in 1911, a new letterhead was commissioned. John Ringling is most desirable in letters that feature circus content of which only a few have entered the market in the past 20 years. In this case, due to the enormity of his circus, John Ringling needed to lease an astonishing 84 railroad cars from the St. Louis Terminal which was, without doubt, the biggest single expense of the circus. He solved this problem in 1919 by purchasing The St. Louis & Hannibal Railroad for $325,000 and hiring Mr. John Lewis Penney as his Traffic Manager, to whom this letter is addressed. Because this letterhead was printed on wood pulp paper, it was necessary to reinforce it by mounting it to another sheet in order to prevent further chipping and fraying at the margins. It has been restored to very good condition. The most well-known of the 5 Ringling brothers who merged the Barnum & Bailey Circus with their own family venture to create a virtual monopoly of traveling circuses in America.

Album with Fifty Original Photographs of Ports and Views in the Mediterranean and Russia made by a Crew Member of the British Steamer Nigretia].

      - Ca. 1910s. Oblong Octavo (ca. 17x21 cm). 25 card leaves. Fifty gelatin silver prints ca. 10x15 cm (4 x 5 7/8 in) inserted into the decorative pockets on the album leaves. Thirty-eight images with period ink captions on the mounts. Original publisher's black cloth album by "M.W. & Co. Ltd, London" with gilt stamped title "Photographs" on the front board and a printed title page "The Decorated Interchangeable Photo Scrap Album;" with a pencil inscription "J. Cartirs" on the title page. Spine rubbed and loose at hinges, endpapers and several mounts slightly soiled, but overall a very good album. An interesting album compiled by a crew member of the British steamer Nigretia (launched 1910) showing its commercial voyages to Russia and the Mediterranean, with a series of images taken on board the steamer showing its crew and cargo. The majority of photographs show Nigretia's voyages in the Mediterranean, showing Livorno (captioned as Leghorn), Bagnara (Calabria, Italy), Cagliari quay (Sardinia), St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice (mistakenly captioned as "St. Paul's"), ruins of Pompeii (five views), Nice (two views, including a photo of two American yachts in the harbour), the banks of the Bosphorus with Turkish fortresses, palaces, and the Ortaköy Mosque (three views). The Mediterranean coast of North Africa is represented with seven views of the Algerian ports of Bona (Annaba) and Honaine (with interesting images of construction works over the loading docks), and three views of Nigretia off Tripoli, including a group portrait of Arab workers on the steamer's deck. There are also four interesting images of the Russian ports of Odessa and Archangelsk with loaders at work and piles of wooden planks prepared for transportation; views of the Kiel Canal with the Levensau High Bridge (Germany, launched in 1895), the Port of Hull (Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire), two photos of Dartmouth, Devon, and a photo of Nigretia in the port of Charlestown, the United States. A series of photos taken on board Nigretia show its cargo deck, working crew members, and the interior of the salon with several senior officers posing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
