London: Luzac & Co., Printed by E. J. Brill, Leyden, , 1910. The Oldest Military Treatise in the World. Translated from the Chinese with Introduction and Critical Notes ... Tall octavo. Original yellow printed wraps. Housed in a plush-lined, black cloth flat back box, title gilt to the spine. Wraps overall slightly spotted and soiled, spine skilfully restored, contents clean, sound and partially unopened, a very good copy. First edition thus, arguably the best translation of Sun Tzu in the twentieth century. At the time of his translation, Giles was assistant in the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum; he was probably the leading Sinologue of his day. It was not until the publication in 1963 of Samuel B. Griffith's translation that Giles met any sort of challenge at all. While Griffith's diction may be more fluent to the modern reader than Giles's, the latter's scholarly apparatus remains peerless. There had been two previous attempts at putting Sun Tzu into a modern European language: Amiot's French version of 1782, and Calthrop's English translation of 1905 (revised in 1908). Giles is amusingly waspish about both: "Père Amiot appears to have enjoyed no small reputation as a sinologue in his day … But his so-called translation … if placed side by side with the original, is seen at once to be little more than an imposture. It contains a great deal that Sun Tzu did not write, and very little indeed of what he did." Meanwhile Calthrop's 1905 edition demonstrates that "the translator's knowledge of Chinese was far too scanty to fit him to grapple with the manifold difficulties of Sun Tzu"; and in the revised 1908 edition, "Some of the grosser blunders have been rectified and lacunae filled up, but on the other hand a certain number of new mistakes appear." The work had specific relevance with world war looming, and is dedicated to the translator's brother Captain Valentine Giles, R.G., "in the hope that a work 2400 years old may yet contain lessons worth consideration by the soldier of to-day". Fragile and highly elusive, a very desirable copy.

In Norse mythology, a valkyrie (from Old Norse valkyrja "chooser of the slain") is one of a host of female figures who choose those who may die in battle and those who may live. Selecting among half of those who die in battle (the other half go to the goddess Freyja's afterlife field Fólkvangr), the valkyries bring their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar (Old Norse "single (or once) fighters". When the einherjar are not preparing for the events of Ragnarök, the valkyries bear them mead. Valkyries also appear as lovers of heroes and other mortals, where they are sometimes described as the daughters of royalty, sometimes accompanied by ravens, and sometimes connected to swans or horses. The artistic and commercial roots of the McLoughlin firm were first developed by John McLoughlin, Jr. (1827-1905). The firm's publications served to popularize illustrators including Thomas Nast, William Momberger, Justin H. Howard, Palmer Cox, and Ida Waugh. After John McLoughlin, Jr.'s death in 1905, the McLoughlin firm suffered from the loss of his artistic and commercial leadership. In 1920, McLoughlin Bros., Inc. was sold to Milton Bradley, the Brooklyn factory was closed, and the company was moved to Springfield, Mass. With this sale, McLoughlin Bros. ceased game production, although the publication of picture books continued.

Mafarka il futurista. Romanzo. Traduzione dal Francese di Decio Cinti.

Milan: Edizioni Futuriste di "Poesia", 1910 - Octavo. Original orange printed wrappers. Spine lightly toned, slightly rolled and a little creased. An excellent copy of this fragile publication. First Italian edition of Marinetti's uncommon first novel, translated by his personal secretary. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed flamboyantly on the front free endpaper: "al caro e intelligentissimo amico dei futuristi, Koltonski" ("to the dear and intelligent friend of the Futurists, Koltonski"), and accompanied by a Futuristic lightning sketch of "Futuris Marinetti" pricking the sagging bubble of "Passatismo" (Traditionalism). A significant association: "Aleksander Koltonski [(1882-1964) Polish writer and translator], who was a resident in Italy and can be considered a protagonist in popularizing Futurism in Poland, issued a summary of the manifestos on Futurist music by Francesco Balilla Pratella and Luigi Russolo. Koltonski was clearly familiar with the collection I manifesti del futurismo. Prima serie (1914) and demonstrated his extensive knowledge in a groundbreaking article, entitled On Futurism as a Cultural and Artistic Movement, which also included an excerpt from Mariinetti's Zang Tumb Tumb. Koltonski emphasized the importance of Futurism for the political-cultural development of Italy, the innovatory character of its aesthetics, and the movement's fertilizing effect on life and art" (Przemyslaw Strozek, "Marinetti is foreign to us": Polish Responses to Italian Futurism in International Yearbook of Futurism Studies, 2011, volume I p. 89). Originally published in French (Paris: Sansot, 1909) as Mafarka le futuriste: roman africain. There would appear to be a number of issues of this first Italian edition: our copy (and others noted in OCLC) have "10o migliaio" (or "10th thousand") printed on the front cover; Copac notes a copy (Leeds University) with "11th thousand" and we know of a copy calling itself "6th thousand". These are all generally regarded as fictional. Mafarka, set in an imaginary African country, brought Marinetti to trial for obscenity. He was acquitted and the furore helped to put Futurism on the cultural map. Koltonski has made two neat inscriptions in Polish that appear to touch on the trial, saying that the book was "confiscated on moral grounds". .

St. Goarshausen. Erker und Ecke eines Fachwerkhauses.

      - Bleistift, aquarelliert, auf gelblichem Velin, rechts unten bezeichnet und datiert „St. Goarshausen, 16.Oct.46.". 25,3:19,6 cm. Schwacher Fleck rechts unten. Provenienz: Aus dem Künstlernachlaß. Vergleichsliteratur: Fr.W. Alexander: Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen. Das Lebensbild eines deutschen Genremalers. Leipzig, E.A.

NEW YORK STATE RAILROAD And INTERURBAN PHOTO ALBUM

[New York]:. 1910 - 1944.. Thick oblong format: "10-1/4" x 13-1/4" x 5". Ca. 1910 - 1944. Unpaginated, though 346 pp.. Contemporary flexible embossed black calf post binder, gilt "Photographs" lettered to front cover, along with title of "New York State" in white ink to front cover, nickel-plate posts at gutter margin.. Minor edgewear with some rubbing and chipping to both album and. leaves. Some lifting to the photos, many of the leaves have wear to. fore-edges. 1 of the nickel posts has snapped due to the weight of. the textblock, a few leaves detached. Withal, a G+/VG remarkable. album.. A massive photo album brimming with over 1100 images of street cars, trolleys, motor cars, locomotives, service trains, interurban railway lines, and railroads across New York from the 1890s up to WWII. With neatly handwritten captions, photographer's notes often on verso, and even some typed text. The compiler has traced the development of the New York transit system before WWII, including many short lines, and trolley lines that have become defunct, and most absorbed into the modern New York railway system. This tremendous photograph album supplies one of the most lavishly illustrated visual archives of New York Interurban Railways, Street Cars, Trolleys, and the development of mass transit in the Northeastern United States before WWII we have ever seen. Included within the album are images of over 60 different Interurban lines, Trolley Lines, and Short Line railways, including the Albany Southern RR, Albany & Hudson Railway, Batavia Traction Co. (operated 1914-1927), Bennington & Hoosik Valley Railway Co. (1989-1927), the Coney Island and Brooklyn Railroad which was the first railroad of any kind to reach Coney Island, and after 1923 became part of the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation, along with the Brooklyn & Manhattan Transit, Brooklyn & Queens Traction Co., and the Brooklyn Rapid Transit. In addition, there are substantial sections devoted to the Empire State Railroad, the Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville RR - significant for showing the ultra modern art deco Bullet interurban cars acquired in 1932 to boost ridership; the Schenectady Railway Company which connected Schenectady -Albany -Troy -Saratoga and was one of the most extensive trolley lines in the Northeastern US; as well as the New York Elevated Railroad, the New York Railways Co., which operated trolleys and streetcars from 1911 until 1925 when their lines were replaced with buses, the Rochester & eastern Rapid Railway which operated from 1901 until 1930 when the line was dismantled; the Steinway Lines Co., which began as the Steinway Railway Company and would become part of the New York & Queens County Railway until 1932 when it broke free and operated as a trolley line until 1939 when they were replaced with buses. This album is filled with trolleys, electric trolleys, electric motor cars, and electric locomotives which were built by numerous different companies including J. M. Jones & Sons Interurban Car Builders, Wason Manufacturing Co., Jackson-Sharp Manufacturing, Baldwin-Westinghouse, Sheffield Car Co., and many others. The photographers stamps on the versos of some images include Howard Humes of Balston Spa, NY, Fred Abele of Albany, NY, Charles A. Brown of Chicago, IL, and many others. The photos provide a vivid picture of New York in the first part of the 20th century depicting the advertising signage, the architecture, fashions, civic movements, the impact of Pearl Harbor with trolleys outfitted to look like Navy Recruiting posts, and much more. Of particular interest are many of the images showing abandoned trolleys and motor cars in wrecking yards, sideyards, others showing accident damage from being hit by trucks, some being sold at auction, and others being burned for scrap as much of the Interurban system was being scrapped for buses at the outbreak of World War II. . 1,111 real photographs tipped-in to thick black paper, mounted with corners. Two colored postcards, 2 maps, 1 large folding brochure for the Jamestown, Westfield & Northwestern Railway (many with photographers notes stamped in ink, many in pencil), including some copy photos from magazines, newspapers, and trade magazines, ranging in size from 2-1/4" x 3-1/4" all the way up to 9" x 11", including many panoramic photos and even some real photo postcards.

BUFFALO RANCH REAL WILD WEST. A LESSON IN THE HISTORY OF PIONEER DAYS. GAMES OF THE REAL RED MEN CAMEL RACES.

Milwaukee: Riverside Print Co., [circa 1910]. - Chromolithographic poster, 55 x 20 inches. Old folds and creases. Two small chips in the edges, one of them touching the edge of the border. Very good. Framed and matted. Not examined out of frame. An attractive, colorful, and action-filled poster for one of the many "Wild West" shows that were formed in the wake of Buffalo Bill Cody's success. The Buffalo Ranch Real Wild West Show was formed around 1910 and produced shows filled with spectacle, as evidenced by this poster. The bottom half of the poster is dominated by a Catlinesque image of "The Real Indian War Dance," as braves in headdresses and breastplates dance around a camp fire. A full moon illuminates the night sky, and a number of teepees are visible in the background. A large illustration in the upper half shows a number of Indians on horseback playing "equestrian foot ball," while others show fancily dressed Anglo women on horseback, as well as a camel race with riders dressed in quasi-Bedouin garb. An attractive poster for a little- remembered Wild West show and a fine example of the "West (and Near East) of the Imagination."

The Buffalo Ranch Real Wild West Show was formed around 1910 and produced shows filled with spectacle, as evidenced by this poster, which promises a show "unparalleled in daring and desperate deeds" and also "history blended with pleasant instruction for all the people of the land." In the upper portion of the poster is a scene of a man - armed only with a knife - battling a charging bull, advertised as "the real Mexican steer contest throwing lassoing & riding the bull." In the background is an illustration of man with one foot on a galloping horse and the other foot on a charging bull. Otto pagine in - 4. Sei pagine in - 8.
