Ty Cobb signs a rare presentation folder, billing himself as "The World's Greatest Ball Player"

His signature, "Very Truly Ty Cobb," accomplished on the center fold of a 12.25" x 9.25" fold-out photographic display featuring two mounted 3.25" x 5.75" bust portraits of Cobb, one in his Detroit Tigers uniform, the other in formal attire. Cobb has added his signature vertically between the two images. The two mounted images were housed in a folded brown paper presentation folder bearing the title: "SOUVENIR PHOTOS OF Ty Cobb The World's Greatest Ball Player." The cover has been expertly separated from inside to allow for easy viewing. A few minor creases, vertical creases affects part of Cobb's signature, minor loss to the bottom of one image as well as to the two bottom corners, tears to the cover have been repaired with tape on the verso, else very good. Rare. Precious few examples (likely less than ten) of this signed presentation album have ever appeared on the market. The precise origin and date of these presentations are unknown, but judging from the paper and printed photographic images (as well as the relative youthful look of Cobb in the images themselves), it can be assumed the printing dates from circa 1910.         My African Journey

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1910. Paperback. This is the 1910 vintage pulp paperback, the so-called "First Cheap Edition." My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them. In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles. In 1910, two years after the first edition, the publisher issued a so-called "First Cheap Edition" produced in vintage "pulp" style. The text is arranged in a 92-page, two-column format with a few pages of advertisements at either end. This handsome paperback edition features a color illustration on the front cover similar to that of the first edition, with Churchill in pith helmet with binoculars around his neck and a rifle in his hands standing beside a dead white rhinoceros. Some 20,000 copies were produced, but given the fragility of the edition, very few survive today. And those that do are usually in poor condition - befitting a cheap paperback more than a century old. This copy is far from fine, but nonethless quite respectable given the age and inherent fragility of the edition. The covers remain firmly attached with some creasing and minor loss confined to the corners. The spine is substantially complete, with only a .5 inch loss at the head and .25 inch loss at the tail, leaving all spine lettering intact except for the "M" in the title. There is a horizontal closed tear spanning the spine and a short distance adjacent on both covers between "Hon." and "Winston". The contents are age-toned, as is ineveitable given the pulp paper, with minor loss to the corners of the first few pages, but otherwise clean, with no spotting or previous owner names.         Rare 1910 New York City Black Hand Wanted Poster for kidnappers of two young boys

Original Wanted Poster, 9? x 11?. ?Arrest For Kidnapping / Rosario Castelli and Wife? above photograph at the left, ?Vito Sorisi? above photograph at the right. Captioned, in part, ?The above are wanted for kidnapping Giuseppe Longo and Michael Rizzo...? Receipt stamped ?Office Chief of Police / San Francisco / Feb 27 1911.? Mounted on another sheet, approximately the same size. Affixed on verso is a Winnipeg [Manitoba, Canada] 8.25? x 11? Poster ?Wanted / On Charges of Fraud and Theft,? picturing ?John Wood Alias Joseph H. Ward,? picturing him. Receipt stamped ?Office Chief of Police / San Francisco / Mar 1 1911.? Uneven edges. Wanted Posters are creased with folds. Very Good condition. The Black Hand was an extortion racket run by Italian immigrants which, by 1900, had been firmly established in major U.S. cities. Unlike the Mafia, Black Handers were an unorganized body, with no central leadership or structure. They would send a letter to a victim threatening bodily harm, kidnapping, arson, or murder. A specified amount of money was demanded and was to be delivered to a specific place. On the letter were symbols such as a skull, a knife dripping with blood, or a smoking gun, and was in many instances, signed with a hand imprinted or drawn in thick black ink. A New York journalist called them Black Hand letters and the name stuck. The Black Hand disappeared in the early 1920s as organized crime expanded. On December 31, 1911, ?The New York Times? ran a full page story titled ?Black Hand Crimes Doubles In Year Just Ended.? It was subheaded: ?Despite Assertions That Such Outrages Are Diminishing, 1911 Reached High Water Mark and Police Are Helpless Before a Society of Bomb Men and Kidnappers.? The article chronicles kidnappings, bombings, and murders in New York City in 1911. Referring to the kidnappings on the Wanted Poster here offered, in part, ?On Nov. 19 [1910] two Brooklyn boys, Michael Ruzzo, 8 years old, of 720 Fifth Avenue, and Giuseppe Longo, 8, of 186 Twenty-first Street, were kidnapped. They were lured away by a man who offered to take them to a moving picture show and were imprisoned in a house at 330 East Sixty-third Street, Manhattan. Then the fathers began to receive the usual letters ?" Longo, in fact, had been threatened before the kidnapping, and had kept his children in the house for some time, until his vigilance relaxed, On Dec. 8 [New York City Deputy Police Commissioner William J.] Flynn?s man, Detective Micelli, ascertained where the boys were and the house was suddenly raided. Little Giuseppe, when taken out of his prison on the second floor, begged profusely not to be beaten. The jailer of the boys was a woman, herself the mother of small children, named Maria Rappi. She and Stanislau Pattenza were convicted and sentenced to forty-nine years and eleven months each ... Many other arrests were made but Vito Sorrisi, the supposed leader of the band, escaped...? This was only the second time a Black Hand kidnapper had been caught. From the Collection of Michael Webb (1950-2009). Webb joined the Vinita Park, Missouri, police force as a patrol officer in 1974 and rose through the ranks. He was Police Chief of Vinita Park, a suburb of St. Louis, from 2001 until his death. Chief Webb was a collector of crime memorabilia that he bought from relatives of criminals and law officers. He had more than 8,000 wanted posters. Some of his items have been used in movies and displayed at the National Crime and Punishment Museum in Washington.

Otherwise this is a near fine copy of this remarkable and highly prized 'Special' edition of the Great S & S Omar. Housed in specially custom-made, full blue straight-grain morocco solander box by Richard Smart (full description below). One of twenty-five copies printed on Japanese vellum and signed by both Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The interpretations of the Rubaiyat are justly famous and among their most important work. "The Great Omar", a nearly legendary copy in an exquisite jeweled binding, was on its way to America when it sunk with the Titanic in 1912. Francis Sangorski died later that year.Rubaiyat of Omar KhayyamSolander Box"My interest in this project; This book has always fascinated me due to its historical significance and the fact that the binders were Sangorski and Sutcliffe. For many reasons, like many, I was captivated by the story of The Great Omar that went down on the Titanic in 1912. The great ship hit an iceberg on April the 13th and finally sank on April 14th 1912. People tend to be fascinated by historical events that occurred in history on their birthdays. As my birthday is April 14th, the same day the Titanic went down, it was a great honor to be given an opportunity to work on this book. The binding was done by one of the most respected binderies in history, Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Many of their bindings are very elaborate and still easily found today in many collections and with book dealers around the world. This was also a time that my grandfather Charles Edward Smart was working as a forwarder at Sangorski and Sutcliffe, and my grandmother as a paper restorer at Bayntun Riviere?'s. They were another well-respected bindery with a history of binding Cosway bindings. The London bookshop Henry Sothern?'s commissioned both the Omar Khayyam and many Sangorski bindings, and the Cosway bindings bound by Riviere?'s My family history in the bookbinding world also goes back three generations working with the family of David Brass. So for me, the chance to make a box for Mr. Brass and this wonderful book was an incredible experience.I knew in today?'s world of getting work done quickly and efficiently, I could not put in the time on this box I really wanted to. To perfect the design and gold tooling as done by Sangorski would of taken many hours and a huge range of gold finishing tools. They required standard gouges and pallets, then shaped them to match the pattern they wanted to create. But now, with limited tools and being so expensive to buy, there had to be a compromise. It was necessary to match the design to the tools available.I bound the box in full blue straight grain Morocco, and started to sketch out a pattern that would have elements of the book design in it without making it look like I was trying to reproduce a Sangorski style binding. Using Grolieresque style on-lays of red and green leather, in a slightly Middle Eastern design, I was able to match elements in the design using gold tooling represented on the book. The design was sketched out on paper, helping achieve a feel for the size of the pattern to fit on the cover. I then marked out the cover in blind (no gold) and worked from there. The on-lay leather required thinning with a pairing knife to be create an almost see-through look. It was then pasted and laid in place carefully with the colors close to each other so the gold had a surface to adhere to. (and not just burn between the two surfaces of leather) This is particularly tricky when creating curves and corners.Once the leather design was pasted into place glaired and gold tooled, the inside of the box was lined with moiré silk. This was also a favorite style of Sangorski and Sutcliffe and another bindery of the time Zaehnsdorf?'s. From start to finish, this required about 36 hours of work, including the design on paper and determining the required tools to create the precise shape and style. This was nothing compared to the two years it took Sangorski to bind the Omar that was lost on the Titanic. At that time, although the design inspiration and much of the work was done by Francis Sangorski himself, the book would have passed though many hands. Such as the ladies sewing the book and sewing headbands in silk, then onto the forwarding department and finally to the finishers for the gold tooling. This process was also applied to this copy 1/25 Bound in Vellum however, the design and finishing details would be done (or closely overseen) by Sangorski himself. It was an absolute pleasure and highlight of my career to see this copy and make a box to house it for life.David, Many Thanks for this opportunity and the many opportunities you have given me to work on these amazing books that pass through your shop."
