[Photograph album, a Pictorial Record of the installation of Native American artefacts from the Collection of George G. Heye at the University of Pennsylvania Museum]

[Philadelphia, 1910. 34 original photographs mounted on black paper album leaves, typewritten legend. 1 vols. Oblong folio. Black cloth flexible boards. Front board and first mount (legend) detached. Photographs fine. Some marginal chipping to edges of mounts. The First Museum of the American Indian Interesting visual record of the installation of the George G. Heye collection of Native American artifacts at the University of Pennsylvania Museum, where Heye's collection (comprising some 10,000 items) was on deposit from 1910 to 1916. A small portion of Heye's collection (1,200 items chiefly from the Pacific Northwest) was donated to Penn as a gesture of goodwill when Heye later moved the majority of the collection to New York, where he established the Museum of the American Indian in upper Manhattan under the auspices of the Heye Foundation. This collection forms the nucleus of the National Museum of the American Indian. The first dozen photographs depict the exhibition cases prepared for the collection during construction and with the exhibits in place under the heading of North American Ethnography. The remaining photographs feature items from the collection, including a buffalo robe with drawings, sacred medicine bundles, a dance shield, baby carrier, moccasins, beaded sashes, a drum, ceremonial masks, wampum belts, and more. Two of the most interesting artifacts are a woman's ghost dance dress (Cheyenne), and Lone Dog's Winter Count (Yanktonais Nakota Sioux), a pictograph calendar recording events from 1800 to 1871 that remains among the prized possessions of the National Museum of the American Indian. The Winter Count is shown front and back as well as mounted on the wall in the museum. The photographer may have been William Witte (b. 1873), the University of Pennsylvania's museum photographer from ca. 1902 to 1937.A beautiful and interesting record of the earliest museum of the American Indian.

Sun Tzu on the Art of War

London: Luzac & Co., Printed by E. J. Brill, Leyden, , 1910. The Oldest Military Treatise in the World. Translated from the Chinese with Introduction and Critical Notes ... Tall octavo. Original yellow printed wraps. Housed in a simple buff card drop-back box with marbled edges. Wraps a little rubbed and soiled, skilfully restored at the spine, contents a little browned, but overall a very good copy. First edition thus, arguably the best translation of Sun Tzu in the twentieth century. At the time of his translation, Giles was assistant in the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum; he was probably the leading Sinologue of his day. It was not until the publication in 1963 of Samuel B. Griffith's translation that Giles met any sort of challenge at all. While Griffith's diction may be more fluent to the modern reader than Giles's, the latter's scholarly apparatus remains peerless. There had been two previous attempts at putting Sun Tzu into a modern European language: Amiot's French version of 1782, and Calthrop's English translation of 1905 (revised in 1908). Giles is amusingly waspish about both: "Père Amiot appears to have enjoyed no small reputation as a sinologue in his day … But his so-called translation … if placed side by side with the original, is seen at once to be little more than an imposture. It contains a great deal that Sun Tzu did not write, and very little indeed of what he did." Meanwhile Calthrop's 1905 edition demonstrates that "the translator's knowledge of Chinese was far too scanty to fit him to grapple with the manifold difficulties of Sun Tzu"; and in the revised 1908 edition, "Some of the grosser blunders have been rectified and lacunae filled up, but on the other hand a certain number of new mistakes appear." The work had specific relevance with world war looming, and is dedicated to the translator's brother Captain Valentine Giles, R.G., "in the hope that a work 2400 years old may yet contain lessons worth consideration by the soldier of to-day". Fragile and highly elusive, a very desirable copy.

Official History (Naval and Military) of the Russo-Japanese War

London: HMSO, , 1910-20. 3 volumes large octavo, together with 3 book-style map-cases, original mid-blue cloth, title gilt to spines, Appendices to volume III in original buff card wraps, housed in the map-case as issued. Volume I with frontispiece and 3 other plates, 10 maps and plans, all but one folding, 3 folding panoramas, and a folding order of battle, numerous tables to the text; 25 folding maps and plans in the accompanying map-case: volume II with frontispiece and 11 other plates, 5 fortification plans, all but one folding, 9 folding panoramas, 7 folding orders of battle and statistical tables, numerous tables to the text, errata slip bound in at the tile page; 30 maps and plans, one of waxed linen, in the map-case: volume III, frontispiece and 6 other plates, one full-page plan and 7 folding panoramas; map-case with 39 folding maps and plans: large folding order of battle to the appendix volume. Ex-Belfast Reference Library, their small and tidy ink-stamps throughout, cloth slightly worn and faded, the whole set now professionally cleaned and restored, presenting reasonably well, and entirely sound, contents lightly browned, light foxing to the liners of the map-cases, some of the maps a little finger-soiled, but overall certainly very good. First and only editions, extraordinarily uncommon. Because of the varying print runs - 2,000 copies of volume I, 1,000 of II, and 1,500 of III and its appendix - only 1,000 sets could ever complete; there was an eight year hiatus between the publication of the the second volume and completion, a slip tipped in at the title page of volume III explains that "the preparation of this volume was completed in 1914, but publication has been unavoidably delayed owing to the late war", meaning that many private purchasers of the series were no longer alive to obtain the last part, casualties of either natural causes or conflict; the majority of sets would have been institutionalised, and therefore suffered a slow demise through rough handling, the weight of the volumes and the construction of the map-cases being a major contributory factor to overall physical deterioration, and the quantity of loose maps militating against the maintenance of completeness. Copac seems to show 10 sets, perhaps 11 including the BL which does not note the map-cases separately, rather listing "two portfolios of maps", but SOAS has two volumes only, as also Durham, times two, and perhaps also NMM. No complete sets noted at auction. But this work is not merely an attractive and exotic rarity, "as record of what actually happened, this is probably the best account of the Russo-Japanese War produced by any general staff in Europe. Reports of the British observers and the official accounts of Austria, Germany, the United States, Russia and Japan were all consulted; Russian authorities provided much useful information, and the proofs were 'very carefully revised' by Japanese military officers in Tokyo" (Higham). This history was a significant departure from the conventional campaign histories that had preceded it, being perhaps the "first of its kind to treat war as an integrated whole rather than a composite of independent military and naval operations". This radical new treatment of the facts of war was perhaps a result of there being no official historian as such, the work being a "synthesis constructed by a talented team … all the members of which pulled their weight. The Official History was a terrific task which was only rendered possible by good team work". The name most usually associated with this publication is Sir Ernest Swinton, best remembered as one of the progenitors of the tank, but among his associates were, F.E. Whitton who was to become an accomplished and popular historian and biographer; Archibald Wavell, soldier, scholar, and viceroy of India, compiler of Other Men's Flowers, a "widely popular anthology … consisting entirely of pieces of poetry which he had by heart" and author of " 'Generals and generalship', one of the best statements on military command ever written: which Rommel carried with him in the north African campaign"; and Guy Dawnay, "army officer and merchant banker", Allenby's deputy chief of general staff in Egypt, described by T.E. Lawrence as "the least professional of soldiers, a banker who read Greek history; a strategist unashamed, and a burning poet with strength over daily things" (ODNB). The result of their collaboration was "a work of exceptionally high quality" (Higham), and when offered complete, as here, highly desirable. Only the second such set encountered by this cataloguer.

        The Grammar of Ornament

1910. JONES, Owen. The Grammar of Ornament, illustrated by Examples from various Styles of Ornament. Illustrated with 112 folio plates drawn on stone by F. Bedford. Folio, bound in publisher's decorated cloth, a.e.g. London: Bernard Quaritch, 1910. |~||~||~||~||~| An unusually fine copy of the small folio edition of this landmark of Victorian colour printing. Owen Jones' famous chromolithographic plates were originally printed by Day and Son in 1856 in large folio. This version was first published in 1868, and contains eleven additional plates not present in the 1856 edition. This 1910 edition consists of sheets which remained from the 1868 edition which were bound and issued with a new title-page. Jones's classic survey of ornamental art and design begins with ornament used by the earliest recorded cultures of Egypt, Assyria and Persia. Jones then moves west to the Greek, Pompeian, Roman and Byzantine civilizations. Several beautiful colour plates reproduce designs from Arabian, Turkish and Moresque ornament, followed by chapters on Indian, Hindoo, Chinese, Celtic and Medieval ornament up to the Renaissance, Elizabethan and Italian designs, including short sections on the Maori and other Pacific peoples. The colour of these chromolithographs, while not as dazzling as in the originals folio, are of a high quality. An excellent copy of a book which, owing to its having been perfect bound is notoriously difficult to obtain in acceptable condition. And it is also becoming scarcer due to the fragmentation of copies by print sellers. McLean 122. Friedman 153. See also Percy Muir's Victorian Illustrated Books pp. 154 et seq.

Feminine Influence on the Poets. (PRESENTATION COPY)

Martin Secker, London, 1910. First Edition, first printing - a presentation copy inscribed by Edward Thomas to his friend and fellow poet: "Ralph Hodgson from ET 1910". 8vo. 351pp + xii publisher's catalogue at rear. Original publisher's blue cloth lettered in gold at spine and upper board with a small gilt vignette and blind-stamped rule. With a tissue-protected frontispiece and three captioned plates, all with tissue guards. Cloth lightly rubbed at tips of corners and one or two other extremities, and with a single tiny tear to head of upper board. Binding cracked at half-title and first gathering really quite tender. A trace of light occasional spotting to preliminary leaves. A very crisp copy. Edward Thomas and Ralph Hodgson were close friends for many years. Thomas (writing in the 'Daily Chronicle') was one of only two people to review Hodgson's first collection of verse 'The Last Blackbird', published in April 1907, and voted for Hodgson's 'The Song of Honour' over Rupert Brooke's 'Grantchester' for the 1913 Poetry Review prize. In turn Hodgson introduced Thomas to his great mentor Robert Frost. The two famously fell out over the issue of the Great War: Thomas recounted a quarrel he had with his father over the issue of 'newspaper patriotism' to some friends in a London restaurant, amongst them was Hodgson who "promptly called him a Teuton, rose in great wrath, kicked over tables and chairs, left the place, and never spoke to Thomas again". Whilst the scene was probably not quite that dramatic, the two did agree not to speak until after the war was over - but kept in touch with one another's movements through friends.. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Photo Album - Voyage to Southeast Asia - Captivating Scenes of Java & Singapore

Singapore, 1910. Singapore, Java, circa 1910. Unique collection of photographs from a voyage to Southeast Asia, featuring close-up detail of the Borobudur reliefs, and colonial interests in Singapore. Oblong Folio album measuring approximately 39 x 31 cm, green cloth over gold and red snakeskin patterned boards. Contains 32 photographs, a few of which are photographic postcards, several of which are large format, mounted onto heavy cardstock leaves. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 11 x 8 cm, and the largest 25 x 21 cm. Occasional creasing, otherwise in Very Good Condition, unusual captivating scenes. Photographs of indigenous tradition in Singapore include young boys preparing pineapple for market, merchant canoes in the harbour, three young ladies wearing only loin cloths, and a father-son team leading their water buffalo for a day's work. We also find views of the outside influences and development with the entrance to the botanical gardens, New Erslande Road and promenade with horse-drawn carriages rushing by, Chinese temples and shops, and Javanese women using a cement 'rice cleaner' - a manual task comprising a hollow cement cylinder and long wooden poles. Finally, we see the steamship 'Hye Leong' built in 1882 by Blackwood & Gordon, at the time of this photograph, owned by Straits Steamship Co. Ltd. (broken up in 1926). Highlights from Java in Indonesia, include remnants and ruins of an abandoned colonial Dutch sugar factory, a Javanese dance performance, and eight (8) images of the 9th century temple known as Borobudur, featuring its exquisite and mysterious reliefs, including one on the east side depicting a three masted vessel sailing the old Cinnamon trade route that linked Indonesia to Africa. On the Rupadhatu level, we see a statue of Buddha encased under a peaked dome, and a narrow stairway passing through the uppermost of the carved arches of Kala. The final panel of the Rama series is photographed, located just to the northeast of the entranceway, and portraying Rama and Laksmana together with Hanuman and his army of monkeys, preparing to cross the bridge they have built to connect the mainland to the island of Lanka, to go see Sugriva - king of the monkeys. Also included is a view on the approach of the temple, and one of the holey stupas on the Arupadhatu level which carry the superstition that if one could touch Buddha through the holes one's wishes would come true. The album concludes with a view of the Grand Hotel du Louvre in Menton, on the French Riviera, Cote d'Azur region. Very Good.

According to HaskellÕs definitive biography, the illustrations for WagnerÕs epic represented ?'an important achievement?" for Rackham. ?'The drawings for Wagner gave him above all a theme - the Norse Myths - which appealed to his nordic sympathies, and with it a series of noble motives. Although the heroic did not really suit his talent, his gods and Rhine-maidens were realized on a high plane of imagination, probably because Wagner had deeply stirred him personally?" (pp. 92-94, also p.169). Latimore & Haskell p.37.
