        The People's Rights

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First edition, only printing. Paperback. This is the first edition, first state of this striking, scarce, and fragile early collection of Churchill's speeches. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. In 1910, when The People's Rights was published, Winston Churchill was a powerful political force and a member of the Cabinet. From December 3-11, 1909 Churchill was on the campaign trail on behalf of the Liberals. The People's Rights is a distillation of these nine days of speeches, criticizing the House of Lords (which had rejected the Liberal Government's budget, thus precipitating the campaign) and championing Free Trade, a graduated income tax, luxury tax, and surtaxes on unearned income. Churchill's efforts were not wasted; as a result of the election, the Liberals would achieve a slim majority and passage of their budget. The People's Rights was published in an exceptionally perishable form, in bright yellow-orange paper wraps (with a halftone photo of Churchill on the cover) and printed on cheap, pulp paper. Consequently few copies survive, and wear, losses, and general deterioration is common to those copies that endure. There are two states of this first and only printing. The first state features and Appendix and an Index (at pages 149-152), while the second replaces the Index with a second Appendix. Here is the desirable first edition, first state. Given the inherent fragility of the edition, this copy is in very good condition. The illustrated wraps remain bright and firmly attached. The front cover is notably complete, with only fractional loss to the corners and trivial edge wear. The rear cover shows a .5 x .75 inch loss at the lower left corner but is otherwise complete. The spine shows some loss at the heel to a maximum depth of .75 inch, minor chipping at the head, and an abrasion just above and partially impacting the price. All title, author, and publisher print remains intact and clearly legible. The contents are toned, as inevitable with the cheap pulp paper, but both less toned and less brittle than we often see. First state is confirmed by a single appendix, an index, and p.71 numbered '1'. We find no previous ownership marks. Light spotting appears confined to the half title, title, and final Index pages. The final Index page shows a 2 inch closed tear. An original folded four-page leaflet advertisement and order form titled "Trade List of The Daily Mail Sixpenny Novels" is laid in.         INTERNATIONAL STOCK FOOD "3 FEEDS FOR ONE CENT" COLORFUL BROADSIDE.

Litho. Dept. of International Stock Food Company, n.d. (ca 1910). - 20 1/2" x 28 1/4" colorful chromolithograph that promotes how International Stock Food will make the sows raise more healthy pigs. An elaborate and colorful broadside that was taken from a book given to purchasers of 25 pounds of International Stock Animal Feed. The lithographs were originally folded within the book so it is normal to see horizontal and vertical folds. The company was founded in Minneapolis in 1886, by Marion Willis Savage, and still is in operation today. It was sold in 2007 to new owners and the headquarters are now located in Canada. Savage manufactured and sold animal feed as well as veterinary supplies and used these posters as a means of advertising. The front side of the poster is colorful and promotes the use of hog feed in order to help sows to raise more healthy pigs. Testimonials tell of one sow raising 21 pigs or three sows raising 52 pigs. The reverse side contains testimonials from successful users of the feed. The company further says "It keeps sows healthy and extra vigorous so that they will give more and richer milk and insures their raising more pigs, if a practical test does not prove this true we will not charge you a cent for all you feed. Is this fair?" As a way of promoting his 3 Feeds For One Cent, Savage purchased, exhibited, and raced horses. The stable included Creseus, Directum, Arion, Minor Heir, and the legendary Dan Patch for whom he paid $60,000.00 in 1902. In 1906, Dan Patch would break the world record by completing the mile in 1 minute and 55 seconds at the Minnesota State Fair. The record stood for 54 years. In 1909 Dan Patch injured one of his legs. On July 4, 1916, both Dan Patch and M. W. Savage became ill. While Mr. Savage was recovering from surgery, he learned that his favorite race horse had died. Less than a day later, on July 12, Savage also died, his physician stated the cause of death was the shock of losing Dan Patch. M. W. Savage was 57 years old at the time of his death. An excellent display piece.

        The Emperor's Nightingale

Vienna 1910 - LEFLER (Heinrich): Die Nachtigall [The Emperor’s Nightingale]. (Märchen Kelender by Hans Christian Andersen). Vienna, ca.1910. ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR drawing illustrating a poignant scene from one of Andersen’s famous series of Fairy Tales, rendered as a calendar by Lefler in collaboration with his brother-in-law Joseph Urban. Measures 7 x 9 3/16 inches, mounted on thin card, matted and framed. Heinrich Lefler (1863-1919) worked primarily in Vienna as a member of the Künstlerhaus (1891) and by late 1890s he became one of Austria’s first artists to design posters, then an emerging and highly popular medium. Together with Urban, he designed costumes, interiors, furniture and accessories. In 1900 they co-founded the Hagenbund, an artists’ cooperative that exhibited works by a number of important figures including Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele. From 1903-1910 Lefler taught at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna. This image is considered amongst the most beautiful designs in his oeuvre.

London: Luzac & Co., Printed by E. J. Brill, Leyden, , 1910. The Oldest Military Treatise in the World. Translated from the Chinese with Introduction and Critical Notes ... Tall octavo. Original yellow printed wraps. Housed in a plush-lined, black cloth flat back box, title gilt to the spine. Wraps overall slightly spotted and soiled, spine skilfully restored, contents clean, sound and partially unopened, a very good copy. First edition thus, arguably the best translation of Sun Tzu in the twentieth century. At the time of his translation, Giles was assistant in the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum; he was probably the leading Sinologue of his day. It was not until the publication in 1963 of Samuel B. Griffith's translation that Giles met any sort of challenge at all. While Griffith's diction may be more fluent to the modern reader than Giles's, the latter's scholarly apparatus remains peerless. There had been two previous attempts at putting Sun Tzu into a modern European language: Amiot's French version of 1782, and Calthrop's English translation of 1905 (revised in 1908). Giles is amusingly waspish about both: "Père Amiot appears to have enjoyed no small reputation as a sinologue in his day … But his so-called translation … if placed side by side with the original, is seen at once to be little more than an imposture. It contains a great deal that Sun Tzu did not write, and very little indeed of what he did." Meanwhile Calthrop's 1905 edition demonstrates that "the translator's knowledge of Chinese was far too scanty to fit him to grapple with the manifold difficulties of Sun Tzu"; and in the revised 1908 edition, "Some of the grosser blunders have been rectified and lacunae filled up, but on the other hand a certain number of new mistakes appear." The work had specific relevance with world war looming, and is dedicated to the translator's brother Captain Valentine Giles, R.G., "in the hope that a work 2400 years old may yet contain lessons worth consideration by the soldier of to-day". Fragile and highly elusive, a very desirable copy.
