[Cascades. ca. 1910s]. - [32]pp. containing seventy-one gelatin silver prints, most 3 1/4 x 2 1/4 to 3 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches, with nine larger images about 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, most mounted, some tipped-in, some cornered. A few images slightly faded or with mild silvering, some photos loose, some photos apparently removed from the album. Overall, a very good album. An interesting collection of early images of Washington state backcountry and mountaineering in the majestic Cascades, around Mt. Stuart and Mt. Rainier. Among the photos are views of mountains, glaciers, lakes, creeks and waterfall in the vicinity, numerous portraits of mountaineers going on trails, climbing, resting in camps, skiing down the slopes, posing in front of cabins, and more. Three images are captioned on verso "Mt. Rainier" and "Waterfalls near Mt. Stuart, Roslyn Wash." A nice example of vernacular photography.

Feminine Influence on the Poets. (PRESENTATION COPY)

Martin Secker, London, 1910. First Edition, first printing - a presentation copy inscribed by Edward Thomas to his friend and fellow poet: "Ralph Hodgson from ET 1910". 8vo. 351pp + xii publisher's catalogue at rear. Original publisher's blue cloth lettered in gold at spine and upper board with a small gilt vignette and blind-stamped rule. With a tissue-protected frontispiece and three captioned plates, all with tissue guards. Cloth lightly rubbed at tips of corners and one or two other extremities, and with a single tiny tear to head of upper board. Binding cracked at half-title and first gathering really quite tender. A trace of light occasional spotting to preliminary leaves. A very crisp copy. Edward Thomas and Ralph Hodgson were close friends for many years. Thomas (writing in the 'Daily Chronicle') was one of only two people to review Hodgson's first collection of verse 'The Last Blackbird', published in April 1907, and voted for Hodgson's 'The Song of Honour' over Rupert Brooke's 'Grantchester' for the 1913 Poetry Review prize. In turn Hodgson introduced Thomas to his great mentor Robert Frost. The two famously fell out over the issue of the Great War: Thomas recounted a quarrel he had with his father over the issue of 'newspaper patriotism' to some friends in a London restaurant, amongst them was Hodgson who "promptly called him a Teuton, rose in great wrath, kicked over tables and chairs, left the place, and never spoke to Thomas again". Whilst the scene was probably not quite that dramatic, the two did agree not to speak until after the war was over - but kept in touch with one another's movements through friends.. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Three Rivers, MI: Fairbanks, Morse & Co., Sheffield Car Company, (n. d.). Ca. 1910 - July 1920. Flexible burgundy calf-post binder, with brass screw posts at gutter margin, front cover with renewed gilt lettering and red fro. Moderate wear (rubbing and some chipping to binder), some fraying to photograph edges (as they are linen-backed), but still sharp images. Some minor creasing and light soiling. Withal, an About VG example.. 73 linen-back photographic leaves. This scarce factory photo album records the trolleys, gasoline powered railway motor cars, railway inspection cars and engines for the Sheffield Car Company. Sheffield began as the Sheffield Velocipede Car Company in 1882, and was based on the patents of George S. Sheffield, and the company quickly began building velocipedes, railway inspection cars, and other types of railway maintenance vehicles. In 1893, Fairbanks, Morse began acquiring the company and patented a two-cycle gasoline engine revolutionizing railway inspection equipment, and maintenance equipment, as well as motorized trolleys, and passenger cars. This catalogue begins with an image of a deluxe No. 16 Type C Inspection Motor Car which could seat nine people, reached speeds of 35 mph, and actually had a hardtop, windscreen and cowcarcher. There are a number of fine photos of the No. 24 Motor Car Trolley -- this one was sold to the Sanford Traction Company which began regular service in Sanford, Florida in April 1909 -- illustrating the exterior, interiors, 4 cycle engine, transmission, and chassis. There are also pictures of the motor cars, engines, axels, chassis, transmissions, and more for a different version of the No. 16 with a soft hardtop; a deluxe four-seater motor car, No. 14; No. 32 which was equipped with a kerosene or gasoline, two-cylinder, two-cycle, air-cooled engine which drove the wheels direct through the rear axle; the No. 33 which was a larger version, the No. 26, sides, top & bottom; the No. 12 a gasoline-powered hand-car, and more. The Sheffield 42 was a deluxe inspection car for moving men and tools, and could even tow a trailer as well; the Sheffield 40 was a big powerful car that could carry a bridge, or construction crew with material; the Sheffield 41 was a light and economical car for use by maintainers and supervisors, with 2-cylinder, 2-cycle engine. There are several factory photos showing the Assembly Department, Foundry, Blacksmith Shop, Machine Shop, Pattern Storage Building, Offices, and even the 1/2 mile circular test track. Fairbanks-Morse continued operating the plant into the 1950s, but the factory was eventually sold off and demolished. The artistic and commercial roots of the McLoughlin firm were first developed by John McLoughlin, Jr. (1827-1905). The firm's publications served to popularize illustrators including Thomas Nast, William Momberger, Justin H. Howard, Palmer Cox, and Ida Waugh. After John McLoughlin, Jr.'s death in 1905, the McLoughlin firm suffered from the loss of his artistic and commercial leadership. In 1920, McLoughlin Bros., Inc. was sold to Milton Bradley, the Brooklyn factory was closed, and the company was moved to Springfield, Mass. With this sale, McLoughlin Bros. ceased game production, although the publication of picture books continued. [Attributes: First Edition]

Les Origines de la France Contemporaine

18- Paris- Hachette 1910 - This is an attractive eleven volume set of this noted history of france by Hippolyte Taine. Complete in eleven volumes with Volume XI two volumes bound in one. In original French. Volumes as follows: Volume I & II- L'Ancient RegimeVolume III -VIII La RevolutionVolume IX-XI Regime ModerneVolume XII (bound with volume XI) Index General. Hippolyte Adolphe Taine was a French critic and historian. He was the chief theoretical influence of French naturalism, a major proponent of sociological positivism and one of the first practitioners of historicist criticism. Literary historicism as a critical movement has said to originate with him. Taine had a profound effect on French literature and the field of criticism and history. Friedrich Nietzsche referred to him as the greatest living historian , and he had a special relationship with author Emile Zola and influenced much of his work. Taine'sOrigines seeks to show that france's primary fault lay in excessive centralisation, originating during the ancient regime and intensified during the french revolution. Taine asserted that far from promoting liberty, the Revolution merely transferred absolute power to even more illberal hands. The first volumewas originally published in 1876 anhas undergone many revisions and editions. Condition: Rebound in quarter crushed morocco bindings with original paper wraps preserved. Externally, smart with just some slight bumping and rubbing. Spines heavily sunned. Occasional mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Bound in modern black boards, printed cover label, 10" x 13.5". The photographs vary in size from 9.5" x 7.75" to 4.5" x 3.75" In Port de France, Martinique, large professional views show the city as seen from Calvary Hill Chapel, Mount Pelee volcano and the town of Saint-Pierre, the busy marketplace, and the statue of Napoleon Bonaparte's wife, Josephine, erected in 1859. ~~ Four striking city views of Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas, then part of the Danish West Indies, evoke a sense of nostalgia, its principal street adorned with ironwork awnings and balconies, and well-dressed locals gathered in front of the telegraph office.
