The firm's publications served to popularize illustrators including Thomas Nast, William Momberger, Justin H. Howard, Palmer Cox, and Ida Waugh. After John McLoughlin, Jr.'s death in 1905, the McLoughlin firm suffered from the loss of his artistic and commercial leadership. In 1920, McLoughlin Bros., Inc. was sold to Milton Bradley, the Brooklyn factory was closed, and the company was moved to Springfield, Mass.         Les Origines de la France Contemporaine

18- Paris- Hachette 1910 - This is an attractive eleven volume set of this noted history of france by Hippolyte Taine. Complete in eleven volumes with Volume XI two volumes bound in one. In original French. Volumes as follows: Volume I & II- L'Ancient RegimeVolume III -VIII La RevolutionVolume IX-XI Regime ModerneVolume XII (bound with volume XI) Index General. Hippolyte Adolphe Taine was a French critic and historian. He was the chief theoretical influence of French naturalism, a major proponent of sociological positivism and one of the first practitioners of historicist criticism. Literary historicism as a critical movement has said to originate with him. Taine had a profound effect on French literature and the field of criticism and history. Friedrich Nietzsche referred to him as the greatest living historian , and he had a special relationship with author Emile Zola and influenced much of his work. Taine'sOrigines seeks to show that france's primary fault lay in excessive centralisation, originating during the ancient regime and intensified during the french revolution. Taine asserted that far from promoting liberty, the Revolution merely transferred absolute power to even more illberal hands. The first volumewas originally published in 1876 anhas undergone many revisions and editions. Condition: Rebound in quarter crushed morocco bindings with original paper wraps preserved. Externally, smart with just some slight bumping and rubbing. Spines heavily sunned. Occasional mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with age toning to volumes I, II, II and IX and just the occasional spot. Descriptive slip inserted to title page ofvolumes IV, V, VI, VII and X.         KODAK GLIMPSES OF CHICAGO PARKS

Chicago: Wm. F.E. Gurley, 1910.. 115 wide-margined cyanotypes, printed rectos only, plus three leaves of Contents. Contemporary three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Spine ends and corners worn. Light foxing, otherwise the photographs are bright, rich, and clean. Very good. An exceedingly rare and amazing presentation copy of Gurley's book of Chicago park photographs, with only two known copies in existence. Gurley has inscribed the book: "To my friend C.L. Frank with the hope of many happy returns Wm. F.E. Gurley Feb. 2, 1911." A "home- made" book with a title page and three leaves of Contents, all typewriter carbon copies, and 115 gorgeous cyanotypes featuring Chicago locations. The photographs depict scenes in various Chicago parks, specifically Washington Park (1-10), Jackson Park (11-87), Garfield Park (88-93), Douglas Park (94-101), Humboldt Park (102- 107), and some "Miscellaneous Views Outside of Parks" (108-115). The views are landscapes, buildings, bridges, statues, monuments, and so on. The Jackson Park images include a number of structures left over from the 1893 Columbian Exposition. William Frank Eugene Gurley was a graduate of Cornell; the 1908 Cornell "Ten Year Book" notes him as the Curator of Paleontology at the Walker Museum, University of Chicago. He was also listed in the 1917 Illinois Academy of Sciences directory as a paleontologist. As the present book shows, he was also a competent and serious amateur photographer. He had a good sense of history and organization in both the photos themselves and in the arrangement of his book. A rare work, almost certainly produced in a small print run. As the titlepage and Index leaves are carbon copies, and as the maximum number of carbon copies which can be produced at any one time is limited to four or five, the whole edition was probably limited to that number. OCLC locates only one copy at the Library of Congress, which Gurley presented to the artist, Joseph Pennell. This is, and will continue to be, a useful source for Chicago historians, architects, landscape architects, and urban historians in general. A very pleasing book. OCLC 44969589.

NORTH POLE: Its Discovery In 1909 Under the Auspices of the Peary Arctic Club. With an Introduction by Theodore Roosevelt and a Foreword by Gilbert H. Grosvenor

New York Frederick A. Stokes 1910 - First edition. A copy WITH WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION MATERIAL. At the front of the book is tipped in an original photograph of Ootah, the Eskimo who had accompanied Peary on his 1906 travels nearest the pole and had reached the pole with Peary on the expedition which is recorded in this volume. Peary had spent 30 hours at the North Pole accompanied by Ootah and a few other Eskimos. With 8 full-page color illustrations, 100 black and white illustrations from photos, and a large folding color map at the rear. Large 8vo, publisher's original navy blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and upper cover which also features a pictorial vignette in gilt, white, blue, gray and red, t.e.g. xxxii, 373 pp. A handsome copy, the interior very fresh and clean, the cloth bright and clean and well preserved. A very interesting 1953 owner's notation on the front blank regarding an original photograph tipped in of Ootah, the Eskimo who accompanied Peary on his travels to the North Pole. A HANDSOME COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION, WITH FINE ASSOCIATION MATERIAL. Peary, of course, was the first to reach the North Pole, and this is the account of his expedition. Along with Amundsen's THE SOUTH POLE, this work represents the culmination of centuries of man's attempt to reach, literally, the ends of the earth. "Commander Peary has made all dwellers in the civilized world his debtors; but, above all, we, his fellow Americans, are his debtors" (-from the introduction by Roosevelt).         CORRECTED TYPESCRIPT, SIGNED, OF HIS NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW TRIBUTE TO MARK TWAIN

[New York], 1910. 3-1/4 pages, typescript, with pencil and ink corrections, on four leaves of foolscap. Folded and a bit used, with pin-holes in upper left corner and some occasional minor soiling, otherwise very good. Half morocco folding clamshell case. 3-1/4 pages, typescript, with pencil and ink corrections, on four leaves of foolscap. The corrected typescript of this exceptional, personal and anecdotal memoir by Carnegie of his longtime friend, with scattered corrections and revisions throughout (in at least two hands, including Carnegie's), and signed by him in pencil at the conclusion. The typescript is docketed in ink on the verso of the last leaf in ink in an unknown hand: "N.A.R. Mark Twain Andrew Carnegie," and caption titled in pencil at the top of the first page in the same hand. While readily accessible public records include Carnegie among the attendees at the 23 April Memorial Service for Clemens in New York, it does not appear that he delivered a eulogy there, or in the days immediately following. Rather, he chose to publish a tribute to Clemens in the June issue of THE NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, and the working typescript in hand is the basis for that tribute. After opening on a grand note ("'Mark Twain gone! - such the refrain that comes to my lips at intervals. The gaiety of nations eclipsed, the most original genius of our age and one of the sweetest, noblest men that ever lived"), Carnegie turns to the personal and particular, writing of their first meeting ("... we met may years ago upon the ocean ... He told me , much to my surprise that the idea of 'A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur' came from reading my first literary outburst ... I was young then and naturally greatly flattered that the business man should be hailed as fellow-author. The intimacy continued to grow until I could safely consider myself one of his circle"), and of how, in time, "My admiration for him increased as I knew him better, until great as the author was, the man, the friend took first place." He recounts his meeting with Clemens after the death of his wife, tells a lengthy anecdote about his providing whiskey as a tonic during Clemens's illness, commends Clemens's treatment of his creditors during his financial crisis, and remarks on Clemens's wrath in the face of injustice. He nears his conclusion: "And so he passed away with the smile upon his face. Nor would we have it otherwise. Mark Twain has nothing to dread hereafter and he now rests close by the side of his wife and children all having preceded him save one. The earth had lost its charm, and philosopher to the last, he was ready to go ...," and after a selection of verse, finishes poignantly and personally: "And yet - and yet - I find the tears drop as I write" [Carnegie's spelling errors are corrected and the revisions included in these quotations]. Less than a year before his death, Clemens had stood in tribute to Carnegie at a dinner in his friend's honor held by the Lotos Club.

ALBUM OF 11 SILVER-GELATIN PHOTOGRAPHS BY A PROFESSIONAL, TAKEN IN KINGSTON IN 1910, THREE YEARS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

1910. Original photograph album. Modern boards. Very Good. This album contains 11 silver-gelatin prints, taken and numbered by a professional, and featuring a panoramic view of Kingston, three years after the city was devastated by the 1907 earthquake. The images are mounted onto black cardstock leaves, with typewritten captions. Bound in black boards, printed cover label, 10" x 13.5". The photographs vary in size from 9.5" x 7.75" to 4.75" x 3.75" Highlighting customary pleasures such as tobacco, trading at the Jubilee Market, and traditional costume and dwellings, these photographs are significant in that they illustrate the reconstruction and preservation of an important Caribbean community after it was razed by a natural disaster. In these views of Kingston as well as surrounding villages and a banana plantation, the photographer captures the essence of indigenous life more than a century ago. The island's natural features, recorded on a motorcar sojourn, include the exquisite Castleton Garden, a panoramic birdseye view of Kingston, local men and women at work, &c.

Five Photo Albums of South East Asia, Bangkok and Siam

Southeast Asia, 1910. Southeast Asia: Siam, Java, Batavia, Singapore, Malaya, 1910-1921. Set of 5 photograph albums, containing 438 original snapshot views, largely featuring Bangkok in Thailand, and Java, with scenes from the public cremation ceremony of King Chulalongkorn the coronation of King Rama VI in 1911, and the Wat Pho Fair in held in Bangkok April 1919. Taken by Percy William May whom was involved in the photographic paper trade for a British company established in Siam, and whom thus frequently travelled a circuit from Bangkok to Semarang, Kuala Lumpur, Medan, Batavia, Penang and Singapore. 8vo. oblong cloth albums containing sepia, and black and white photographs, neatly ensconced behind window mounts, recto and verso onto cardstock leaves, several with manuscript captions to verso. Each volume with a detailed list explaining and dating the views, typed by his wife Emma Amelia (née Burgess). Photographs measure approximately 9.5 x 7 cm. Some mild age-toning, otherwise in Very Good Condition. Photographs of Siam from this period are scarce. This noteworthy photographic archive spanning eleven years in Southeast Asia, centering largely in Bangkok and Java, features early and scarce views of Siam, while illustrating colonial development and prosperity, the lot comprising original snapshot views taken by an active representative of the Spicer Brothers Ltd., stationers and producers of sensitised albumen paper who were established in Bangkok. Early views of Bangkok, approximately 120 in number, capture and commemorate historically significant events for Siam, with photographs pertaining to the cremation of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) which was an elaborate public ceremony held 16 March 1911; others showing a festively adorned city and large crowds attending the coronation of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in December 1911; and several taken at the Wat Pho Fair in April 1919. On a voyage from Singapore onboard the on 25 October 1910 Mr. May and the other passengers learned of the death of King Chulalongkorn who passed away only two days earlier. Particularly ephemeral are the images taken on the premaine ground after the king's cremation and before the removal of buildings which were specifically erected for the event. Especially rare, pertaining to the coronation event, is a view of the royal state barque preparing to take the king to the Bangkok Wat for a religious ceremony, Prince & Princess Alexander of Teck along with other European nobles seeing him off from a covered pavillion styled pier. The streets near the Grand Palace and government buildings are beautifully decorated. [King Chulalongkorn reigned from 1868 to 1910 and was actively engaged in wide-ranging reforms to modernize the country. He abolished slavery and the feudal system, created a centralized bureaucracy and a professional army. Vajiravudh was crowned on 11 November 1910, and one year later held a 13-day coronation celebration which was attended by representatives of fourteen countries.] A river scene wherein men are navigating a long canoe is inscribed to verso with a map of "Hong Kong Bank Lane" which leading to the Meham River. An important street for Europeans, the map places a bungalow residence, the Bangkok United Club, and the corporate offices of the Siam Forest Company. Highly uncommon is a series of 39 snapshot photographs taken while Mr. May attended the Wat Phi Fair from 3-7 April 1919. In the bustling streets he captures market vendors, indigenous Thai people coming from near and far for the event. Also in Bangkok, we find views of Sra Pathum Palace and Christ Church, the latter built in 1905 on a foundation of teak logs and boasting a marble floored sanctuary seen in the interior view, as well as a single exterior photograph of the Roman Catholic church. Quaint street scenes simply captioned "Bangkok" include an old military camp behind a picket fence, and a bungalow. He visits the markets of Klong Poh Yome district, the Russian Legation, and Wat Cheng (now Wat Arun). Typically in Bangkok, he settled in the Oriental Hotel, which was the first hotel built in Thailand when it opened as in 1879. [Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, it is now one of two flagship properties of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.] Mr. May spent Christmas 1910 in Bangkok, and poses with a group of associates, together with American Minister and Consul General in Bangkok Mr. Hamilton King, and his wife. [Mr. Hamilton King, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary for the United States of America, was born at St. John's, Newfoundland, in 1852. He was appointed Minister-Resident in Siam in January, 1898, and promoted to his present position in 1903. He died two years after this photograph, in December 1912 in Bangkok.] Also present is Arpad Richard Hertzka, a businessman involved in paper importing, first in Thailand from the early 1900s to the late 1910s as manager of Messrs Alois Schweiger and Co , Ltd. Bangkok, then in Shanghai from the early 1920s to 1949. Usually travelling throughout Southeast Asia by steamship, in April 1919 he takes an overland rail journey on the then newly opened Bangkok-Penang railway which was established in July 1918. His return to Europe in 1921, beginning with a railway journey by way of Penang, offers final glimpses of the Phra Pathommachedi stupa and homes built over water and supported by stilts. Java in Indonesia is also a focal point of one of these albums, and seen dispersed among others, which include the 9th century Borodubur temple ruins and its bell-shaped stupas on the Arupadhatu level, as well as the exquisitely carved exterior walls. Other scenes are captured in Lembang, Surkarta and Sukabumi, amongst the rice fields of Sukabumi at the foothills of Mount Gedo, at the Java Botanical Gardens, and on a tour of the volcanos Salak, Bromo, Battok, etc., A charming photograph shows a modest bamboo raft on Lake Bagendit, and a road is being constructed through a jungle for improved communications. During the Governor General's visit to Java in October 1911, busier than usual street scenes in Semarang are filled with horse-drawn carriages, bicycles and foot traffic. Other views show the Simpang hotel, a Dutch colonial church, and nautical views of the historic Semarang lighthouse built in 1883 which remains in operation today. After its opening in 1910, when in Surabaya, West Java, Mr. May settled at the Oranje Hotel. Indonesia, the world's fourth-most-populous country today, looked drastically different a century ago. From Buitenzorg (Bogor), he includes views of the Governor General's palace and tours the botanical gardens. An expedition to the summit of a mountain pass leads to a spectacular view of Java's Bromo volcano in full steam. A nostalgic view captures the Empire Hotel in Kuala Lumpur shortly after opening its doors, with rickshaws waiting for passengers at the front gate. Attracting the finest of visitors, advertisements boasted that it was "fitted with electric lights and fans... private bathrooms attached." On his 1914 tour he also visits a botanical garden in Kuala Lumpur and the Lata Kinjang Falls near Chendariang. Lovely images are taken of the Taman Sari Water Castle, a site of a former royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, showing the entranced to the bathing complex as well as fallen structures wrecked in the 1867 earthquake. Some time was spent in Malaysia. From Ipoh, the mining capital of Perak, we find a Malay mosque, a European clubhouse, the Grand Hotel, and a view to demonstrate the white marble roads, and another of the marble cliffs. From Penang he includes excellent photographs of the well appointed Raffles Hotel which dates back to early colonial times, including his suite. In Singapore he visits a coconut plantation, and stays at the Adelphi Hotel. Whilst in Batavia, capital of the Dutch East Indies (now Kota, Jakarta), he settled in the Nederlanden Hotel, a lovely colonial building erected in 1794 as the residence of Pieter Tenzy. [After standing for two centuries, in 1969 it was demolished and replaced with Bina Graha Presidential Office. It was also the home of Governor General Thomas Stanford Raffles from 1811-1815.] Yet more festivities were taking place in Southeast Asia during his time abroad. In Medan, Sumatra, on 31 August 1911, the photographer attends a grand birthday celebration for Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. He stayed in Medan for several days or weeks, at the Hotel de Boer, built in 1898. [From humble beginnings as a small kingdom on the Deli River delta, in the early 1900s Medan became a booming plantation town and administrative centre, attracting wealthy Europeans and rendering great fortunes as Sumatra's tobacco, rubber, palm oil and tea fetched high prices on the world markets. The Deli district tobacco was considered the best in the world.] The final album, beginning with views taken from the veranda of the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, illustrates the return journey for Europe, accompanied by his wife. The last view of Bangkok is of the view of the Phra Pathom Chedi stupa captured from a railway station whilst en route to Java, Medan in Sumatra, Penang, and finally Colombo in Ceylon. The voyage was made on HMS Phra Ruang, an R-class destroyer built in 1916 for the Royal Navy as HMS Radiant, which had, only one month before this snapshot photograph, been transferred to the Royal Siamese Navy as Phra Ruang in September 1920. In April 1921 they are traversing the Suez Canal, affording views of Port Said. The album concludes in June 1921 with views of the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway in North Devon (a water-powered funicular railway established in 1888). Percy William May (1181-1958) was established in Bangkok as a representative for Spicer Brothers, a British wholesale stationery company which was established and trading in Southeast Asia. Spicer Bros. (Foreign & Colonial) Ltd. is listed in the 1914 Bangkok and Siam Directory, with Percy W. May as its representative. The company had a printing office in Bangkok and did some photographic work. Percy married Emmie Amelia Burgess in 1913, and she evidently stayed with him in Bangkok for some before the couple returned to England in 1921. Spicer Brothers Ltd. was a partnership between Henry, Edward, and Augustin Spicer, wholesale stationers and suppliers of sensitised albumen paper known from the early 1880s. At some point William Gage Spicer was also a partner in the Spicer Brothers firm. Later called Blackfriars Photographic and Sensitising Supply Co., the partnership was dissolved by mutual consent in March 1895 and the company was sold. In 1898 when the company was merged with the London Photographic Supply Co. to form the London & Blackfriars Photographic Supply Co. In 1899 London & Blackfriars sold the sensitised paper portion of the firm's operations to Houghton. In Southeast Asia, the company Spicer Bros. (Foreign & Colonial) Ltd. continued with the family name. Percy William May is named in the 1914 Bangkok and Siam Directory, as the company's representative. His quarters were at a bungalow situated on Hong Kong Bank Lane in Bangkok, and also used as the mess for employees of the Siam Forest Company Ltd. . Very Good.
