        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Freud").

Wien, 11. I. 1910.. 1¾ SS. 4to..

Typed Letter Signed, large 4to, [Sonoma, California} Dec. 22, 1910

      - To "Comrade Tuck," London references his writings commenting on the fact that he hadn't lectured in a while and suggesting he organize a talk around his answer to Kipling's attack on Socialism. In part, "Do you remember Kipling's attack in parable upon Socialism? The Bee-Hive parable? I have written a reply to it, in the form of a parable. It has been refused by practically every magazine? soon to be published by HAMPTON'S MAGAZINE? entitled THE STRENGTH OF THE STRONG." "The Strength of the Strong" was published in "Hampton's Magazine," Volume 26, March 1911 and later published in book form by Macmillan in 1914. Kipling's attack on socialism, in the form of a political parable about bees, was first published in "Collier's Weekly" in the United Stated on November 28,1908, under the title, "The Mother Hive," and in the United Kingdom as the "Adventures of Melissa," for "Windsor Magazine," December 1908. In his parable, Kipling argued for the need to recognize socialism as an attack against the future of the British Empire and defend against such false progressive ideas. Slightly faded with margin tear to one fold at top not affecting text. Jack London was a socialist and member of the radical literary group 'The Crowd' in San Francisco, supporting worker's rights and unionization. He became a socialist in 1894 and wove his political perspective into his writings and lectures. Our letter to H.C. Tuck gives evidence to London's political orientation. Referred to here as "Comrade Tuck," Tuck was a socialist leader, editor, and State Secretary of the Socialist Party of California. In 1910-11, Tuck was arrested for libel, having printed some apparently libelous material in various newspaper articles. In 1910, the year he wrote our letter to Tuck, London's "Burning Daylight," as well as "Revolution and Other Essays," "Lost Face," and "Theft: A Play in Four Acts" were all published. That same year saw the birth of his daughter and her untimely death just 36 hours later. It was also in 1910 that London purchased the Kohler & Frohling ranch. I. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Bergeroc, 3. Wissen Sie was Bestimmtes? Nun sehen Sie [ ]". Er komponierte Märchenopern (u. a.

        Trade Catalogue] Kunst-Orchestrions Hupfeld Helios

Graphische Kunstanstalten J. J. Weber, Leipzig - Early entertainment centers, or elaborate mechanical music makers which could simulate the sound of a full orchestra. Scarce, no copies located anywhere. N.d., circa 1910. Oblong, 23 by 30 cm. 60 pp. With separate 4 page pricelist. Generally each model gets one or two pages, with the machines become generally more elaborate as one pores through the catalogue. All the machines are sturdy furniture, the size of a tall secretary, cabinet or armoire, with the grandest of the orchestrions as wide as a barroom wall. The designs are mostly Mitteleuropa heavy Renaissance Revival, and even those with in a lighter Rococo style or nods to a more stylized modernist aesthetic somehow retain this old-fashioned quintessential Teutonic stolid look. The machines are decorated with panels of stained glass and/or scenic paintings, with the occasional sculpture set in a niche, as one would associate with the furniture the machines are emulating. Interspersed are photos of ballrooms, restaurants and other public spaces such as a roller rink where the orchestrion is installed. One page features testimonials from well-known musicians of the day, such as operetta composer Oscar Straus, and there is text about the company, its factory, etc. A very handsome and unusual trade catalogue about a mostly lost piece of popular musical culture. Store stamp on many of the pages with orchestrions pictured. Otherwise, light wear. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Feminine Influence on the Poets. (PRESENTATION COPY)

Martin Secker, London, 1910. First Edition, first printing - a presentation copy inscribed by Edward Thomas to his friend and fellow poet: "Ralph Hodgson from ET 1910". 8vo. 351pp + xii publisher's catalogue at rear. Original publisher's blue cloth lettered in gold at spine and upper board with a small gilt vignette and blind-stamped rule. With a tissue-protected frontispiece and three captioned plates, all with tissue guards. Cloth lightly rubbed at tips of corners and one or two other extremities, and with a single tiny tear to head of upper board. Binding cracked at half-title and first gathering really quite tender. A trace of light occasional spotting to preliminary leaves. A very crisp copy. Edward Thomas and Ralph Hodgson were close friends for many years. Thomas (writing in the 'Daily Chronicle') was one of only two people to review Hodgson's first collection of verse 'The Last Blackbird', published in April 1907, and voted for Hodgson's 'The Song of Honour' over Rupert Brooke's 'Grantchester' for the 1913 Poetry Review prize. In turn Hodgson introduced Thomas to his great mentor Robert Frost. The two famously fell out over the issue of the Great War: Thomas recounted a quarrel he had with his father over the issue of 'newspaper patriotism' to some friends in a London restaurant, amongst them was Hodgson who "promptly called him a Teuton, rose in great wrath, kicked over tables and chairs, left the place, and never spoke to Thomas again". Whilst the scene was probably not quite that dramatic, the two did agree not to speak until after the war was over - but kept in touch with one another's movements through friends.. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.

Three Rivers, MI: Fairbanks, Morse & Co., Sheffield Car Company, (n. d.). Ca. 1910 - July 1920. Flexible burgundy calf-post binder, with brass screw posts at gutter margin, front cover with renewed gilt lettering and red fro. Moderate wear (rubbing and some chipping to binder), some fraying to photograph edges (as they are linen-backed), but still sharp images. Some minor creasing and light soiling. Withal, an About VG example.. 73 linen-back photographic leaves. This scarce factory photo album records the trolleys, gasoline powered railway motor cars, railway inspection cars and engines for the Sheffield Car Company. Sheffield began as the Sheffield Velocipede Car Company in 1882, and was based on the patents of George S. Sheffield, and the company quickly began building velocipedes, railway inspection cars, and other types of railway maintenance vehicles. In 1893, Fairbanks, Morse began acquiring the company and patented a two-cycle gasoline engine revolutionizing railway inspection equipment, and maintenance equipment, as well as motorized trolleys, and passenger cars. This catalogue begins with an image of a deluxe No. 16 Type C Inspection Motor Car which could seat nine people, reached speeds of 35 mph, and actually had a hardtop, windscreen and cowcarcher. There are a number of fine photos of the No. 24 Motor Car Trolley -- this one was sold to the Sanford Traction Company which began regular service in Sanford, Florida in April 1909 -- illustrating the exterior, interiors, 4 cycle engine, transmission, and chassis. There are also pictures of the motor cars, engines, axels, chassis, transmissions, and more for a different version of the No. 16 with a soft hardtop; a deluxe four-seater motor car, No. 14; No. 32 which was equipped with a kerosene or gasoline, two-cylinder, two-cycle, air-cooled engine which drove the wheels direct through the rear axle; the No. 33 which was a larger version, the No. 26, sides, top & bottom; the No. 12 a gasoline-powered hand-car, and more. The Sheffield 42 was a deluxe inspection car for moving men and tools, and could even tow a trailer as well; the Sheffield 40 was a big powerful car that could carry a bridge, or construction crew with material; the Sheffield 41 was a light and economical car for use by maintainers and supervisors, with 2-cylinder, 2-cycle engine. There are several factory photos showing the Assembly Department, Foundry, Blacksmith Shop, Machine Shop, Pattern Storage Building, Offices, and even the 1/2 mile circular test track. Fairbanks-Morse continued operating the plant into the 1950s, but the factory was eventually sold off and demolished.
