African Game Trails. An Account of the African Wanderings of an American Hunter-Naturalist.

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1910 - First edition of Theodore Roosevelt's classic work. Octavo, original cloth, gilt top edge, photogravure frontispiece, illustrated, 48 plates, map of Roosevelt's route and hunting trips in Africa. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To General Sir Reginald Wingate with the high regard of Theodore Roosevelt April 21st 1911." The recipient, Reginald Wingate was a British general and administrator in Egypt and the Sudan. He earned the nom de guerre Wingate of the Sudan. In December 1899, on Lord Kitchener being summoned to South Africa, Sir Reginald Wingate succeeded him as Governor-General of the Sudan and Sirdar of the Egyptian Army, being promoted to local major general on 22 December 1899. His administration of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, between 1899 and 1916, achieved the colonial goals of the British Empire, with the colony regaining a degree of prosperity and its infrastructure being rebuilt and expanded. In near fine condition with light rubbing and wear to the extremities. A nice association, trade editions of African Game Trails are rare. "One of the most famous of all big-game hunting epics, this, with its larger than life sportsmen, was almost continuously in print until the 1930s. In British East Africa, Roosevelt hunted lion and plains game on the Kapiti Plains, while, in the Bondoni hill country, he collected rhinoceros and giraffe. On Juja Farm, his son Kermit faced leopard, while Teddy bagged rhino and hippopotamus. On the Kamiti River, buffalo were taken. Near the Sotik, additional rhino and lion were hunted, with elephant bagged near Mt. Kenia. On the Guaso Nyiro, giraffe and a variety of plains game were shot. Further adventures included hunting elephant near Lake Nyanza, rhino and plains game in the Lado, and eland on the Nile. Roosevelt’s total bag was enormous even by the liberal standards of that era" (Czech, 138-39). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Coupe Vanderbilt / Le Match Gabriel -- Long-Island Railroad, au passage a niveau d'Hicksville

M.M., Paris 1910 - Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition. The Vanderbilt Cup began on Long Island in 1904, modeled after the European long distance races. The race was supported by the local elite and the fledgling AAA, while it was opposed by farmers, politicians and the local press. Eighteen competitors took part in the first race. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        [Photo Album]: Vassar

Poughkeepsie, New York, 1910. Good. Oblong octavo. Brown leather over paper boards measuring 8" x 6". A collection of 144 sepia toned and black and white photographs affixed to stiff black paper with a very few loose ones laid in, contains only a single caption. Various sizes including 2" x 3", 4" x 3.25", 3.5" x 3.5", and others. Good only with detached but present boards, worn edges, heavy rubbing, and the first page detached, photos are clear with very slight curling. From the single caption and photos of a college campus, most notably what appears to be the Thompson Memorial Library, the album is presumably from a woman attending Vassar College. The album depicts dorm rooms as well as women picnicking, hanging bird houses, and posing around the campus. In one group a throng on women is marching around carrying a sign that says "1907." Further along in the book are photos of boating trips, bicycle repairs, and a few night shots, one of which is of a bolt of lightening.

        IDYLLEN DES THEOKRIT

Jena: Eugen Diederichs, 1910. No. 505 OF 850 COPIES. This lovely item is tied in every way to the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th century: it is beautifully printed by a German publisher inspired by Ruskin, bound by a leading practitioner of Arts and Crafts techniques, and presented by the designer of types used here to a woman who became the principal type designer for the Bremer Press. The "Idylls" of the greatest of Greek pastoral poets, Theocritus (third century B.C.), are the earliest known "bucolic" poems and the model for Virgil's "Eclogues." The translation here is by German Romantic poet Eduard Mörike (1804-75), praised by Ludwig Wittgenstein as "a great poet" whose work was "very closely related to Goethe's." Part of the German Arts and Crafts movement, Deutsche Werkbund, publisher Eugen Diedrichs (1867-1930) set up his press in Jena as a Kulturverleger [culture publisher] dedicated to bringing great works of literature to the common people, rather than producing avant-garde works for an elite audience. The attractive typefaces used here are Ehmcke-Antiqua and Ehmcke-Kursiv, designed in 1909-10 by typographer and graphic designer Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke (1878-1965). Ehmcke had this book bound by another member of the Arts and Crafts movement, Alfred de Sauty, who trained briefly at the end of the 19th century at Riviere in London and subsequently made designs for the Hampstead Bindery and taught at the London County Council School of Arts and Crafts. In 1908 he immigrated to America, becoming manager of the extra bindery at the R. R. Donnelly Co. in Chicago, where he became known as one of the most accomplished binders at work in the first third of the 20th century. The recipient of this lovely volume was Anna Simons (1871-1951), who studied with Edward Johnston at the Royal College of Art in London before returning to her native Germany. At the time she received this volume, she was teaching a lettering course at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie, translating Johnston's work into German, and organizing exhibitions of British book arts. She designed the type for the second Bremer Press book (the 1914 Tacitus), and became the principal designer for the Press. Johnston's biographer called her "one of the best students Johnston ever had and certainly one of those who exercised the greatest influence afterwards, for she disseminated his teaching throughout Germany where it was perhaps more fruitful, even, than in England.". 195 x 120 mm. (7 5/8 x 4 3/4"). xii, 65, [1] pp.Translated by Eduard Mörike. No. 505 OF 850 COPIES. TASTEFUL BURGUNDY CRUSHED MOROCCO BY ALFRED DE SAUTY (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with gilt-rule frame with three inlaid green morocco dots at corners, upper cover with matching central lozenge containing the initials A. S., raised bands, gilt-ruled spine compartments, gilt titling, turn-ins with gilt French fillet, edges untrimmed. Original burgundy wrappers bound in. Front flyleaf with ink inscription (dated Dusseldorf, 1910) to calligrapher and type designer Anna Simons from F. H. Ehmcke, designer of the type in this volume. A breath of rubbing to lower corners, otherwise A SUPERB COPY, exceptionally fine inside and out. In June 1928, while taking part in a rescue mission for the airship Italia, Roald Amundsen's plane disappeared, ending his epic and heroic career.

[Trade Catalogue] Fourrures Max Édité par les Fourrures Max. Quelques Modèles en Fourrures pour l'Hiver 1910-1911 par Leroy & Schmidt

Paris: Draeger Imprimerie, 1910. First edition. A most unusual trade promotion fur catalogue, housed in a Japanisme leporello featuring five color illustrations. Closed, 28 by 13.5 cm. With four folds, forming ten panels. Three of the illustrations are double paneled, two are single, and the first panel has text, while onto the final panel is pasted an envelope which contains within a folded cover sheet and six cards, each with a tinted illustration of a woman wearing one of the company's furs. These cards, which are the real heart of the promotion, are each 23.5 by 11 cm. The Japanisme-inspired illustrations are not entirely irrelevant to the product on offer, as they tell the story of Prince Kararih who is seeking a special fur as a gift and goes out hunting to kill this ferocious beast to obtain it. The narrative is told in French verse captions. Back to the cards, they show soigne women in lavish creations designed by Leroy and Schmidt, who we can infer were top designers for Max Fourrures, but possibly not the only ones the company used. The illustrations are very much in keeping with the style of "Le Bon Ton" and other tony fashion publications of the teens, these, without the pochoir color. The whole production of this trade promotion was produced by Draeger, which brought a singular exquisite panache to the many commercial publications it did during the first half of the twentieth century. The outer cover sheet for the cards has foxing, and there is some light foxing, not much though, on the margins of the leporello paper.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, 1910

'This Edition is limited to 525 copies for sale in England and America, of which number this copy is 46, signed by Willy Pogany'. Large Format. Brown leather binding with gilt ruling, fine gilt design and lettering to upper board, gilt lettering to the spine, top edge gilt and original silk page marker - still attached but a little fragile. A fine example of Willy Pogany's work with stunning detailed illustrations being twenty tipped in plates, many bright and bold drawings to almost every page and decorative lettering, all framed by beautifully designed edges. Drying to the binding, as seems to be the case with all copies available online, scuffing to edges and tips of the spine, 2" split to top of the spine, but both boards firm with no movement, and scuffing to leather at rear board. Remarkably clean inside with only some age toning to endpapers as seen in photos, otherwise all pages clean, bright and crisp. A beautiful example. Unpaged.

        DRAMATIS PERSONAE

Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1910. ONE OF 250 COPIES on paper (and 15 on vellum). In contrast to Morris' proclivity toward the baroque, Thomas J. Cobden-Sanderson, the founder (along with Emery Walker) of the Doves Press, demonstrated that printing with plain type (designed by Walker) that is well set and with good margins could produce notable work. As Cave says, the Doves Press books, "completely without ornament or illustration, . . . depended for their beauty almost entirely on the clarity of the type, the excellence of the layout, and the perfection of the presswork." For Cobden-Sanderson, who took up printing late in life, the elegant simplicity of the Doves books was intended to be in harmony with the works of God in creating the beauty and mystery of the universe. Beginning in 1900, the Doves Press issued 51 imprints (in addition to ephemeral items) before closing in 1916, after which its hyphenated co-founder, under the cloak of darkness, tossed his famous Doves type into the Thames so that it could never be used by anyone else. He may have been a crackpot, but this did not stop him from producing books printed with beautiful purity (not to mention the ravishing bindings he designed and/or fashioned with his own hands), and Doves books will always have a strong appeal for those who believe in being uncluttered as the first principle of layout and typographic design. The present collection of 18 shorter poems, first published in 1864 when the poet was 52, achieved for Browning the general recognition that his talents warranted. And it is an indication of the poet's persisting popularity into the 20th century that his work was chosen for this special edition nearly 50 years after its first appearance.. 235 x 171 mm. (9 1/4 x 6 3/4"). 4 p.l. (2 of them blank), [9]-202 pp., [1] leaf (colophon). ONE OF 250 COPIES on paper (and 15 on vellum). Original flexible vellum, vertical gilt titling on the spine. Printed in black and red. Tidcombe DP-22; Tomkinson, p. 56. Naturally occurring variations in the color of the vellum (this binding with the pinpoint brown grain predominating), otherwise a very fine copy, the text entirely clean, smooth, and bright.         Poems.

Hampstead: The Priory Press, and Cambridge, Bowes & Bowes,, [1910]. Small quarto. Original cloth backing grey paper boards, lettered in black on spine and front cover, grey endpapers. Spine tanned, some minor marks to covers, extremities a little rubbed, a few spots within but on the whole very fresh, a very good copy. First edition, first impression, a rare presentation copy of the very scarce large paper issue on hand-made paper (not in Anderson), inscribed, "EMD from FCC, March 1910", on the first blank, mostly likely to a member of the sprawling Darwin family. Frances Cornford (1886-1960, née Francis Crofts Darwin - granddaughter of Charles, married the poet Francis Cornford in 1909) was a close friend of Brooke, and an aspiring poet in her own right. This publication, Cornford's second book (following the rare Holtbury Idyll, 1908) and first poetry collection, includes her poem "Youth", later titled "On Rupert Brooke" ("A young Apollo, golden-haired, / Stands dreaming on the verge of strife, / Magnificently unprepared / For the long littleness of life"), as well as the notorious "To a Fat Lady Seen from a Train" ("O why do you walk through the field in gloves, / Missing so much and so much? / O fat white woman whom nobody loves, / Why do you walk through the field in gloves?"), which became a standard anthology piece and was parodied for its assuming callousness by Housman and by Chesterton ("Why do you rush through the field in trains, / Guessing so much and so much? / Why do you flash through the flowery meads, / Fat-head poet that nobody reads").
