Album with 125 Original Photographs of Garden Island - Sydney Base of the Royal Australian Navy, Showing its Sites and Residents, Tennis Club, "Tresco Mansion," portraits of the "Japanese officers at Garden Island," and others, as well as Views of Sydney Harbour, the Blue Mountains, Golf Clubs in Blackheath, Melbourne and Sydney, et al].

1910 - Ca. 1910-1914. Folio (ca. 32x27,5 cm). 12 stiff card leaves. 125 gelatin silver prints ca. 7,5x10 cm (3x4 in) mounted within rectangular or oval frames. All photos with period ink manuscript titles on the mounts. Period green full cloth album with colour stamped title "Sunny memories" on the front cover. Overall a very good internally clean album with bright photos. Interesting photo album from the family of a high ranking Australian naval officer who resided at Garden Island, base of the Royal Australian Navy in Sydney (now a restricted area). The interesting images include views of Garden Island: streets, embankment with HMS Pegasus, Signal Hill on the Coronation Day, interior of the island church, "Idol from Mallo Kollo Island" (Malakula, Vanuatu), "the tree planted by H.M. The King," "swimming bath," and others. A series of views depict Garden Island tennis club which is considered to be Australia's first lawn tennis court (built in 1880), showing the court itself and tennis court pavilion, group portraits of players shown during games or afterwards, posing with rackets. The album's owner or compiler (named "H.C.") is on several photos, posing in naval uniform in his garden, on board HMS Encounter and on board a naval ship at the beginning of WW1 (the last photo dated November 1914); there are also portraits of (probably) his wife "Ad" and other naval officers and sailors (Gosling, Baker, S.P.O. Trevin); views of their house and garden on Garden Island (the exterior, interiors of the drawing room and office, images of the front and kitchen gardens). Six interesting group portraits show "Japanese officers at Garden Island" posing in white uniform with "Ad" and another lady at the tennis court. Five photos depict the ¿Tresco¿ mansion ¿ the official residence of the Naval Officer-in-Command at the Garden Island (the exterior and interiors, ¿swimming bath¿, a view of the Sydney harbor from Tresco). Three photos show the Bristol biplane in Sydney with the following commentary: "one of two sent arrived Dec. 1910, flew Perth, then Melbourne, then Sydney, c. Feb. 1911." There are also images of numerous ships in Sydney harbor (HMS Fantome, HMS Cambrian, HMS Powerful, HMS Encounter, P&O S.S. Moldavia, HMS Pioneer et al.), Sydney botanical gardens, a series of photos from a trip to the Blue Mountains (Grand Canyon, Grose Valley, Kanimbla Valley, Hydro Majestic Hotel in Medlow Bath, and others). Several photos reveal the album compiler's keenness on golf (images of the Blackheath golf links, the Royal Melbourne golf club and the Royal Sydney Gold club). Overall a very interesting illustration of the social life of Australian naval officers on Garden Island on the threshold of the First World War. "Garden Island, located in Sydney Harbour to the east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay, has been associated with the defence of Sydney and eventually Australia, since the first fleet of convicts arrived in 1788. Garden Island is thus named because it was here that the crew of HMS Sirius of the First Fleet planted a vegetable garden in late January 1788. Garden Island has had connections with the Navy since the early days of the colony. As well as a garden, it housed a gun emplacement which guarded the passageway between Farm Cove and Pinchgut (Fort Denison) until the construction of Fort Macquarie on Bennelong Point. A similar gun pit was built on Gov. Macquarie's Point, but this was removed after Fort Macquarie was built and no trace of it remains today. In 1811 Gov. Macquarie declared Garden Island a civilian establishment and thus it stayed until 1856 when it was returned to the Royal Navy for use as a base. The base grew in a ramshackle manner with new buildings and facilities being added progressively over the next century. Today it is a restricted area and houses the Fleet Base of the Royal Australian Navy and the Garden Island Dockyard" (Garden Island/sydneyforeveryone-online). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Atlas Géographique

Logerot, Pauly, and others, Paris 1910 - Six map puzzles, each measuring 330 x 240 mm., housed in the original colour printed card case. Geographical jigsaw puzzle set comprising six maps mounted and cut into parts corresponding to the colonial dominions of major European powers. This division of the world reflecting European territorial aspirations exemplifies the mood of the first decade of the twentieth century (a rivalry that, in good part, ultimately precipitated the outbreak of the First World War). Accordingly, this puzzle set has an interesting social history dimension as it tangibly demonstrates the overlap between colonialism and early childhood education. The map of Australasia and the Pacific is captioned Océanie dressée par M. Mrs. R. Cortambert et A. Vuillemin, and bears the imprint 'Logerot éditeur Quai des Augustins, 55'. It is a later printing of an engraved map of the same title published by Hachette in 1852. This lithographed version was prepared circa 1880, and includes a colour key dividing South-east Asia and the Pacific into the respective colonial dominions of England, France, Spain, the United States, Holland and Portugal. As depicted the Australian continent includes good detail of inland geographical features such as Mt. Stuart and Lake Eyre, and the Hammersley Ranges in Western Australia. The other five maps in the series are later publications, printed circa 1910, and are contemporaneous with the striking presentation case. They include a double hemisphere world map and the remaining four continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The front board of the presentation case is itself a fine example of period design, with five beauties respectively symbolising each continent amidst a cornucopia of regionally specific natural products and commodities. The borders are ornamented with fauna of each of the continents and Australian animals include the kangaroo, emu, lyrebird, wombat, possum, thylacine and a gang of cockatoos. A little wear to extremities of the card case, puzzles in excellent condition.

The Key to the Character Problem or the "Chinese Alphabet". Four Thousand most Frequent Characters according to Rev. W.E. Soothill's Phonetics . with Standard Romanisation. For Self-examination and Private study. [Shanghai, Presbyterian Mission Press, about 1910].

1910 1910 - A collection of about 4000 printed character flash-cards on small square pieces of paper (ca 3,5 x 3,5 cm). Housed in labelled compartments within the original specially designed wooden box (5,5 x 32 x 40 cm). Some, about 215 pieces have been pasted onto card, the remaining characters are loose and have romanizations and English meanings printed on reverse. A few of the cards are defected with some loss, probably by insects. A printed paper label titled "The Key to the Character Problem" is pasted onto the inner lid of the original wooden box. A four-page advertising leaflet for various Chinese language-teaching works by Rev. J. A. Silsby dated Shanghai ca 1911, is loosley inserted. An impressive and very rare survival of a printed tool for learning Chinese. It was probably made for the use of new missionaries coming to China. The most common Chinese characters are to be found here. The flash cards are organized by similar sounds; on the versos provided with romanizations to aid pronounication, and an English translation. Paul Kranz (1866-1920) was a German missionary who lived in China for many years. He wrote many books and articles in Chinese about Christianity as well as he translated classical Confucian texts from literary Chinese into colloquial Chinese, because many modern Chinese could not read age-old language well. He was considered a controversial person among his companions since he beleived that Christianity could never replace Confucianism but only complete it. Kranz published a book titled "Key to the Character Problem" (1910) but we have not been able to find any record of this teaching tool. Most likely they were meant to complement each other.

Album of Vernacular Photographs of Family Life

[no date - circa 1910]. Black cloth photo album. Oblong. Measuring 10" x 7.25". Album contains 21 affixed sepia toned photographs, along with an additional 15 black and white, sepia, or silver print photos laid in, three negatives of a woman on a typewriter, and the personalized handkerchief of Mary A. Pettit. All photos are between 2.5" x 2" and 5.5" x 3.5" and are very good or better with slight edgewear and some creasing. Album has worn corners and rubbing.A prosaic album displaying images of home life, probably from the first decade of the 20th Century, and mostly centered on the activities of women. From the back marks (of the photo studios Bailey and Myers-Cope Company) which appear on some of the loose photographs it can be presumed the families lived somewhere in proximity to Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia. Many of the scenes are of women in fancy hats or perambulating with parasols. Also making an appearance are the occasional men and children, most of whom are posing for portraits, one of a man pretending to drive a car. Among the photos are three negatives of a woman on a typewriter with what appears to be an early Dictaphone-like device. A pleasing album of carefree upper middle class people enjoying the decades before World War and financial hardship would upset the bucolic pace of American life. .

Exzellente Fototafeln, u.a. zahlreiche von Barton, der viele Jahre später mit einem aufsehenerregenden Artikel und vielen Fotos im 'Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland' (Vol. XLVIII, 1918, S. 22-79) über die Tatauierung der Motu und Koita in der Region Port Moresby erneut das Interesse und die Aufmerksamkeit auf diese Region Süd-Ost-Neuguineas entfachte.         Photo Album - Large Photos in Algeria - Beautiful Traditional Costumes

Algeria, 1910. Algeria, circa 1910. Unique collection of six original photographs featuring arresting portraits of Berbers in Algeria. Contained in a large oblong quarto album measuring approximately 39 x 25 x 5 cm, brown cloth boards. Five photographs measure approximately 25 x 19 cm and one measures approximately 13,5 x 9,5 cm. Occasional creasing, otherwise in very good condition, a lovely set of captivating images. Four (4) stellar professional numbered photographs of Algerian Berbers, these likening and possibly being of the work of famed photographer Jean Théophile Geiser who was active in the region at the time. Three of these beautifully illustrate the elegance of traditional female Algerian costume, including the white Moorish burka. One is of a male musician in Bir Salem, Tebessa Province. Two (2) other large photographs of the city of Algiers show the expansive zig-zag terrace which overlooks the quay at the Port of Algiers, and a view of the harbour and cityscape beyond, as seen from the lighthouse. Evidently compiled by a French traveller, the album also contains a view of the Grand Hotel du Louvre in Menton, on the French Riviera, Cote d'Azur region.. Very Good.

Photo Album with 64 Original Photographs of Burma and Japan, with Interesting Images of the Oil Rich Region near Yenangyaung in Lower Burma].

1910 - Ca. 1910s. Oblong Octavo (ca. 20x24 cm). 32 card leaves. 62 albumen prints (and two loosely inserted), including two large views ca. 15x20 cm (5 ¾ x 8 in), the rest ca. 10,5x12,5 cm (4 x 4 ¾ in). Period black half morocco album with green pebbled cloth boards and moiré endpapers; gilt tooled spine with raised bands, all edges gilt. Rebacked in style, otherwise a very good album with well preserved strong images. Interesting private album with original photos of the Irrawaddy River and the oil rich region near Yenangyaung in the Lower Burma. Compiled by D.W. Burdie (his inscription is on the front free endpaper), a British traveller to Burma who was apparently associated to the Rangoon Oil Company (now the Burmah Oil Company), the album documents his journey up the Irrawaddy River, showing nearby villages, "Burmese Bazaar at Pegan" [?], the river boat with the travellers on the way to Yenangyaung, sail boats and bamboo rafts, oil refining tanks, a group of "Burmese moving boiler," "R.[angoon] O.[il] C.[company] Buildings at Chiney," "Flat loading with Bamboo at Prome" (Pyay), native saw mill et al. A number of images portray local people: families, villagers, cart drivers, a "Burmese boy catching prons [sic!] in the Irrawaddy River," a "Native of India money lenders" et al. Twelve photos depict a Burmese funeral procession and a subsequent feast. There are also two large views of Mandalay and a part of the Irrawaddy River taken from different angles. The album also contains about twenty views and scenes of Japan, apparently of Nara and Kyoto (with the Kanabiki waterfall). Overall a very good interesting album. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Typed Letter Signed, large 4to, [Sonoma, California} Dec. 22, 1910

      - To "Comrade Tuck," London references his writings commenting on the fact that he hadn't lectured in a while and suggesting he organize a talk around his answer to Kipling's attack on Socialism. In part, "Do you remember Kipling's attack in parable upon Socialism? The Bee-Hive parable? I have written a reply to it, in the form of a parable. It has been refused by practically every magazine? soon to be published by HAMPTON'S MAGAZINE? entitled THE STRENGTH OF THE STRONG." "The Strength of the Strong" was published in "Hampton's Magazine," Volume 26, March 1911 and later published in book form by Macmillan in 1914. Kipling's attack on socialism, in the form of a political parable about bees, was first published in "Collier's Weekly" in the United Stated on November 28,1908, under the title, "The Mother Hive," and in the United Kingdom as the "Adventures of Melissa," for "Windsor Magazine," December 1908. In his parable, Kipling argued for the need to recognize socialism as an attack against the future of the British Empire and defend against such false progressive ideas. Slightly faded with margin tear to one fold at top not affecting text. Jack London was a socialist and member of the radical literary group 'The Crowd' in San Francisco, supporting worker's rights and unionization. He became a socialist in 1894 and wove his political perspective into his writings and lectures. Our letter to H.C. Tuck gives evidence to London's political orientation. Referred to here as "Comrade Tuck," Tuck was a socialist leader, editor, and State Secretary of the Socialist Party of California. In 1910-11, Tuck was arrested for libel, having printed some apparently libelous material in various newspaper articles. In 1910, the year he wrote our letter to Tuck, London's "Burning Daylight," as well as "Revolution and Other Essays," "Lost Face," and "Theft: A Play in Four Acts" were all published. That same year saw the birth of his daughter and her untimely death just 36 hours later. It was also in 1910 that London purchased the Kohler & Frohling ranch. I. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Bergeroc, 3. Wissen Sie was Bestimmtes? Nun sehen Sie [ ]". - Poldini lebte seit 1899 als Komponist und Musiklehrer in Genf und seit 1908 in Bergeroc bei Vevey. Er komponierte Märchenopern (u. a.         Trade Catalogue] Kunst-Orchestrions Hupfeld Helios

Graphische Kunstanstalten J. J. Weber, Leipzig - Early entertainment centers, or elaborate mechanical music makers which could simulate the sound of a full orchestra. Scarce, no copies located anywhere. N.d., circa 1910. Oblong, 23 by 30 cm. 60 pp. With separate 4 page pricelist. Generally each model gets one or two pages, with the machines become generally more elaborate as one pores through the catalogue. All the machines are sturdy furniture, the size of a tall secretary, cabinet or armoire, with the grandest of the orchestrions as wide as a barroom wall. The designs are mostly Mitteleuropa heavy Renaissance Revival, and even those with in a lighter Rococo style or nods to a more stylized modernist aesthetic somehow retain this old-fashioned quintessential Teutonic stolid look. The machines are decorated with panels of stained glass and/or scenic paintings, with the occasional sculpture set in a niche, as one would associate with the furniture the machines are emulating. Interspersed are photos of ballrooms, restaurants and other public spaces such as a roller rink where the orchestrion is installed. One page features testimonials from well-known musicians of the day, such as operetta composer Oscar Straus, and there is text about the company, its factory, etc. A very handsome and unusual trade catalogue about a mostly lost piece of popular musical culture. Store stamp on many of the pages with orchestrions pictured. Otherwise, light wear. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
