[Ristigouche?: No publisher/printer 8vo (22.5 x 15 cm). 4 pp.. ca. 1910?] Words are in French and Micmac with a musical score arranged for singer and piano accompaniment. This is apparently the first printing of the Micmac national anthem, which seems also to have been issued in the same year in Souvenir d'un IIIe centenaire en pays micmac = Sist gasgemtelnaganipongegeoei migoitetemagani oigatigen (Ste. Anne de Ristigouche [Québec]: Frères mineurs capucins, 1910). => Only one copy traced via WorldCat, in Germany(!), with the Souvenir seeming also to be very little held in libraries; WorldCat locates only three institutions reporting ownership. One leaf, folded. First page with half-inch long tear and another smaller tear at upper left corner, not touching text. Near fine.

        Three Little Kittens Painting Book

1910. first edition. A Very Scarce Louis Wain Painting BookWAIN, Louis. Three Little Kittens Painting Book. London: Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd., [n.d., ca. 1910]. Small quarto (9 1/16 x 7 inches: 230 x 177 mm.). 20 pp (including wrappers). Four full-page illustrations in full color with duplicate brown line drawings opposite, designed to be hand colored by the owner (the second drawing already expertly colored). Original color pictorial wrappers. A very fine example of a fragile rarity."You will be pleased to see your old friends the "Three Little Kittens," here you have a picture to paint of them crying over their lost mittens, and then happy at having found them, afterwards dancing round their Mummy with the Pie, and lastly you have them washing their mittens… The young artist must prepare his tints upon a white plate or palette. He must compare his colours with those of the picture he is about to copy, and before he begins to paint… (Instructions for Young Artists (inside front wrapper)Father Tuck's Little Artists' Series No. 4063.At the end of the last century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist who went mad, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. ?"He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves?" (H.G. Wells).?"From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled…[a]lthough he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well-known!?"       (n.p.): (n.p.). [c. 1910-1921]. A printed manuscript poem by Burroughs, his most famous, first published in Knickerbocker magazine in 1863, when Burroughs was 25; anthologized in Whittier's Songs of Three Centuries in 1875. At that time the poem had seven stanzas; over the years the weakest stanza (the sixth of seven) was dropped (by an unknown editor). "Waiting" appeared as the preface to Burroughs' Light of Day in 1900 with six stanzas, but even so the fifth stanza continued to trouble him. According to the Clara Barrus biography Our Friend John Burroughs, published in 1914, "a few years ago" Burroughs occasionally substituted a new fifth stanza, beginning, "The law of love binds every heart..." (Later renditions have this line reading "The law of love threads every heart.) But that too failed to satisfy him, and future renditions would have the original six (of seven) stanzas. This broadside has the six stanzas, with the short-lived "binds every heart" fifth stanza; it is printed in Burroughs' holograph, with an original water color of tree branches, and it is inscribed by Burroughs, for Barnard C. Connelly, and dated Feb. 9, 1921, the month before Burroughs' death. 7" x 9-3/4", bevel-edged on three sides; previously framed and sunned over most of the page; staining to two margins, touching only the date. A very good copy. Although Burroughs wrote "considerable poetry as a young man" (his words, from John Burroughs Talks), "a time came when I wrote no more poetry and destroyed most of what I had done previously...I am practically a man of a single poem." We have found reference to a smaller (4-1/2" x 6") leaflet of this poem being done earlier, by Alfred Bartlett, but have found no record of the printing history of this variation. First Edition. No Binding.

Report on Army Manoeuvres, 1909. [With:] Manoeuvres, 1909. War Office Instructions

London: [printed by Harrison & Sons for the War Office,], 1910. Together 2 items: foolscap quarto, original buff cloth-backed printed boards; octavo, sewn in the original buff wraps. Tables, 2 of them folding, 6 folding maps in an end-pocket. Ex-Royal Army Military College Library, occasional ink stamps to the Report, boards slightly soiled, hinges a little loose, but contents clean and sound, the Instructions stamped on the upper panel of the wraps, else very good. Only edition, "for official use only": 1,060 copies of the first-named; 1,200 of the second, which is the handbook for participants. This is apparently unrecorded, though there is perhaps a copy in the Montgomery-Massingberd Papers at LHCMA, with less than a handful of copies for the Manoeuvres of 1925 located institutionally. Taking place under the direction of Sir John French as Inspector-General of the Forces, these manoeuvres pitted the Red Force under Lieut.-Gen. Sir H. L. Smith-Dorrien, his cavalry commanded by Brigadier E. A. H. Allenby, against the Blues commanded by Sir Arthur Paget. Many other names found in the composition of the forces would rise to prominence in just a few years time. An important resource on the preparedness of the British Army for the Great War.

Hardcover. 303 x 230 mm (11 7/8 x 9 1/8"). 172, [1] (limitation), [1] (blank), [1] (colophon), [1] (blank), [3] (specimen pages from the prospectus). First Edition in French, No. 258 OF 400 COPIES on Japon SIGNED by Dulac. PUBLISHER'S ORIGINAL DELUXE BINDING OF BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, HEAVILY GILT, BY DURVAND (stamp-signed on verso of front flyleaf), covers with triple gilt fillet border enclosing an elaborate gilt frame with cupids at corners and fancy gilt title lettering at center; flat spine with gilt decoration and lettering, gilt-ruled turn-ins, marbled endleaves, top edge gilt, original wrappers bound in. With head- and tailpieces, border designs for text and chapter pages, four decorative initials, two small medallions, and 30 COLOR PLATES BY DULAC mounted within decorative frames captioned in French, each with a tissue guard. Hughey 23x, 23aa (deluxe binding). Thin two-inch crack at bottom of front joint, trivial marks and soiling to covers, faint residue from leather dressing, spine evenly sunned, otherwise an excellent copy, with bright gilt and with text, plates, and tissue guards in pristine condition. This is one of the specially bound copies of the French edition of Dulac's lovely "Sleeping Beauty" and other fairy tales, a work justifiably described in the advertising literature of Hodder and Stoughton as "the most beautiful book ever published at a popular price." According to Ray, this is Dulac's "best work," full of ornate and attractive scenes for the title tale as well as "Cinderella," "Bluebeard," and "Beauty and the Beast." Our French edition contains head- and tailpieces, decorated initials, borders, and medallions not found in the original British edition, published in the same month and year. Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) was a French-born naturalized British citizen who illustrated books and magazine and designed stamps and currency. Born in Toulouse, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts before moving to London. There, in 1905, he received his first commission, to illustrate the novels of the Brontë Sisters. He joined the London Sketch Club, which introduced him to England's foremost book and magazine illustrators. Through his new contacts, he began an arrangement with the Leicester Gallery and Hodder & Stoughton, with the gallery commissioning illustrations from Dulac which they sold in an annual exhibition. The publishing rights to those paintings were bought by Hodder & Stoughton for reproduction in illustrated gift books, and Dulac became the foremost illustrator during the golden age of deluxe gift books for children. Influenced by the work of the older artist Arthur Rackham, Dulac shows a sophisticated and exotic tone in his illustrations, with rich color reminiscent of the paintings of Gustav Klimt. When the children's book market contracted after World War I, he found work as a magazine illustrator. Later, he designed British currency and postage stamps, the most celebrated being those for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and the early years of her reign.

        Complete Poetical Works

1910. WORDSWORTH, William. The Complete Poetical Works of William Wordsworth.Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1910.Ten volumes.Limited edition, number 173 of only 500 sets, illustrated with photogravures and hand-colored frontispieces, with a three-page autograph letter signed by Wordsworth. The letter, dated October 24, 1845 to a Mr. Parry, responding to his request for help, reads in part: "I received your letter when I was upon the point of setting off from my Brother-in-Law's house… and I now sit down, not to thank you for it, or to express the deep sympathy which I feel in your sorrow… I have no knowledge of such a person as Rupert Trott [?] or of a place named Dale-Head… But this is no way remarkable. There is so much coming and going of strangers among us and the names of places are so frequently and fantastically altered. I have however written to the Clerk… begging him to make inquiries and to send me the result without delay, which I will immediately transmit to you and I hope in time… I remain, my dear Mr. Parry, with my high respects, faithfully yours, Wm. Wordsworth.'' "Mr. Parry" is possibly Charles Henry Parry, a physician and author who accompanied Coleridge on his tour of the Harz Mountains and was also a friend of Southey.Spines uniformly toned to brown.         Fairies I Have Met

1910. An Enlarged Life With Dulac's Fairies[DULAC, Edmund, illustrator]. STAWELL, Mrs. Rodolph. Fairies I Have Met. Illustrated in Colour by Edmund Dulac. London: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [October, 1910]. First 're-issue' edition (first published 1907). Octavo (7 5/8 x 6 inches; 194 x 153 mm). 117, [1, blank], [1, printer's slug], [1, blank] pp. Eight color plates printed on glossy paper with captions printed in blue.Publisher's deep blue cloth, front cover pictorially stamped in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. Early ink inscription on front free endpaper. A fine copy."Fairies I Have Met was reviewed in Outlook in its Literary Supplement of New Children's Books, November 9, 1907. The reviewer spoke of the book as 'charmingly illustrated in colour by Edmund Dulac.' It would be hard to disagree…With the pictures here, Dulac displays a style much more humorous and whimsical than that of his illustrations for the Bronte novels two years earlier. The subjects are painted at close range, in deep colours, creating bolder designs and showing much detail, as opposed to the distant misty room or landscape scenery of the Bronte work" (Hughey).Hughey 15a.

        [Work-From-Home/Mail Order Business Archive]

Various (Norwood OH, Pittsburgh PA, etc.), [ca. 1910-1912]. Very good. Archive containing a wide variety of printed materials, more than several dozen individual items, some 100+ pages in total. Toning, wear throughout. A handful of items fragile. But vast majority of contents generally very good. A detailed list of contents is available upon request. A substantial archive of broadsides, advertisements, flyers, catalogues, guides, correspondence, and other ephemera gathered by one H.W. Jones of Ohio in his quest to establish a profitable mail order and/or work from home business. The archive includes several small books and pamphlets on running a successful mail order business (as well as two sample business plans for same). Also numerous promotional circulars, catalogues, and other marketing materials for a wide variety of potential mail order goods: "instantaneous" water heaters, self-heating gasoline irons (yikes), bunion shields, rubber diapers, magic tricks, printing contraptions, joke books, tire repair kits, thimbles, fire engines, as well as other novelties and household products. A number of rate cards for placing classified and other advertisements are also present, as are form letters and other materials from several companies offering mail order services: addresses, leads, etc. The archive suggests Jones considered many of these possible avenues, but his longest sustained engagement appears to have been The United Manufacturing Company of Leipsic, OH - makers of "Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers." Extensive correspondence with the company (both form and personalized - including a vigorous defense of the product after Jones raised doubts) are present as are invoices, contracts, testimonials, and holograph drafts of Jones' own form correspondence on behalf of the product, likely produced in hopes of recruiting - as such schemes were wont to do - more salesmen. Overall, a fascinating look at pre-depression America through the lens of a dodgy industry that continues in many similar forms to this day.

Sanborn, with the Composer's Compliments-- New York, Dec. 10, 1910," with Puccini's full autograph signature appearing below. The signatures of Toscanini and the cast members appear on the page listing the performers. "On his first visit to the United States, in 1905, Puccini saw a performance of David Belasco's horse opera The Girl in the Golden West and was fascinated by the old stage wizard's tricks with moving scenery and an elaborate snowstorm. He was also fascinated by the warmth of the reception that America accorded him. But it was not until he had returned to Italy that he finally decided to make this play the vehicle for his next operatic score… `For this drama,' he said, `I have composed music that, I feel sure, reflects the American people, and particularly the strong, vigorous nature of the West'" (100 Great Operas and Their Stories, 216). The only signature absent among the cast members is that of Enrico Caruso, who performed the role of Dick Johnson.Hopkinson 7A.Score in fine condition, playbill with some restoration to rear wrapper and repair to inner hinges of some pages.

Album with 125 Original Photographs of Garden Island - Sydney Base of the Royal Australian Navy, Showing its Sites and Residents, Tennis Club, "Tresco Mansion," portraits of the "Japanese officers at Garden Island," and others, as well as Views of Sydney Harbour, the Blue Mountains, Golf Clubs in Blackheath, Melbourne and Sydney, et al].

1910 - Ca. 1910-1914. Folio (ca. 32x27,5 cm). 12 stiff card leaves. 125 gelatin silver prints ca. 7,5x10 cm (3x4 in) mounted within rectangular or oval frames. All photos with period ink manuscript titles on the mounts. Period green full cloth album with colour stamped title "Sunny memories" on the front cover. Overall a very good internally clean album with bright photos. Interesting photo album from the family of a high ranking Australian naval officer who resided at Garden Island, base of the Royal Australian Navy in Sydney (now a restricted area). The interesting images include views of Garden Island: streets, embankment with HMS Pegasus, Signal Hill on the Coronation Day, interior of the island church, "Idol from Mallo Kollo Island" (Malakula, Vanuatu), "the tree planted by H.M. The King," "swimming bath," and others. A series of views depict Garden Island tennis club which is considered to be Australia's first lawn tennis court (built in 1880), showing the court itself and tennis court pavilion, group portraits of players shown during games or afterwards, posing with rackets. The album's owner or compiler (named "H.C.") is on several photos, posing in naval uniform in his garden, on board HMS Encounter and on board a naval ship at the beginning of WW1 (the last photo dated November 1914); there are also portraits of (probably) his wife "Ad" and other naval officers and sailors (Gosling, Baker, S.P.O. Trevin); views of their house and garden on Garden Island (the exterior, interiors of the drawing room and office, images of the front and kitchen gardens). Six interesting group portraits show "Japanese officers at Garden Island" posing in white uniform with "Ad" and another lady at the tennis court. Five photos depict the ¿Tresco¿ mansion ¿ the official residence of the Naval Officer-in-Command at the Garden Island (the exterior and interiors, ¿swimming bath¿, a view of the Sydney harbor from Tresco). Three photos show the Bristol biplane in Sydney with the following commentary: "one of two sent arrived Dec. 1910, flew Perth, then Melbourne, then Sydney, c. Feb. 1911." There are also images of numerous ships in Sydney harbor (HMS Fantome, HMS Cambrian, HMS Powerful, HMS Encounter, P&O S.S. Moldavia, HMS Pioneer et al.), Sydney botanical gardens, a series of photos from a trip to the Blue Mountains (Grand Canyon, Grose Valley, Kanimbla Valley, Hydro Majestic Hotel in Medlow Bath, and others). Several photos reveal the album compiler's keenness on golf (images of the Blackheath golf links, the Royal Melbourne golf club and the Royal Sydney Gold club). Overall a very interesting illustration of the social life of Australian naval officers on Garden Island on the threshold of the First World War. "Garden Island, located in Sydney Harbour to the east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay, has been associated with the defence of Sydney and eventually Australia, since the first fleet of convicts arrived in 1788. Garden Island is thus named because it was here that the crew of HMS Sirius of the First Fleet planted a vegetable garden in late January 1788. Garden Island has had connections with the Navy since the early days of the colony. As well as a garden, it housed a gun emplacement which guarded the passageway between Farm Cove and Pinchgut (Fort Denison) until the construction of Fort Macquarie on Bennelong Point. A similar gun pit was built on Gov. Macquarie's Point, but this was removed after Fort Macquarie was built and no trace of it remains today. In 1811 Gov. Macquarie declared Garden Island a civilian establishment and thus it stayed until 1856 when it was returned to the Royal Navy for use as a base. The base grew in a ramshackle manner with new buildings and facilities being added progressively over the next century. Today it is a restricted area and houses the Fleet Base of the Royal Australian Navy and the Garden Island Dockyard" (Garden Island/sydneyforeveryone-online). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Atlas Géographique

Logerot, Pauly, and others, Paris 1910 - Six map puzzles, each measuring 330 x 240 mm., housed in the original colour printed card case. Geographical jigsaw puzzle set comprising six maps mounted and cut into parts corresponding to the colonial dominions of major European powers. This division of the world reflecting European territorial aspirations exemplifies the mood of the first decade of the twentieth century (a rivalry that, in good part, ultimately precipitated the outbreak of the First World War). Accordingly, this puzzle set has an interesting social history dimension as it tangibly demonstrates the overlap between colonialism and early childhood education. The map of Australasia and the Pacific is captioned Océanie dressée par M. Mrs. R. Cortambert et A. Vuillemin, and bears the imprint 'Logerot éditeur Quai des Augustins, 55'. It is a later printing of an engraved map of the same title published by Hachette in 1852. This lithographed version was prepared circa 1880, and includes a colour key dividing South-east Asia and the Pacific into the respective colonial dominions of England, France, Spain, the United States, Holland and Portugal. As depicted the Australian continent includes good detail of inland geographical features such as Mt. Stuart and Lake Eyre, and the Hammersley Ranges in Western Australia. The other five maps in the series are later publications, printed circa 1910, and are contemporaneous with the striking presentation case. They include a double hemisphere world map and the remaining four continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The front board of the presentation case is itself a fine example of period design, with five beauties respectively symbolising each continent amidst a cornucopia of regionally specific natural products and commodities. The borders are ornamented with fauna of each of the continents and Australian animals include the kangaroo, emu, lyrebird, wombat, possum, thylacine and a gang of cockatoos. A little wear to extremities of the card case, puzzles in excellent condition.

The Key to the Character Problem or the "Chinese Alphabet". Four Thousand most Frequent Characters according to Rev. W.E. Soothill's Phonetics . with Standard Romanisation. For Self-examination and Private study. [Shanghai, Presbyterian Mission Press, about 1910].

1910 1910 - A collection of about 4000 printed character flash-cards on small square pieces of paper (ca 3,5 x 3,5 cm). Housed in labelled compartments within the original specially designed wooden box (5,5 x 32 x 40 cm). Some, about 215 pieces have been pasted onto card, the remaining characters are loose and have romanizations and English meanings printed on reverse. A few of the cards are defected with some loss, probably by insects. A printed paper label titled "The Key to the Character Problem" is pasted onto the inner lid of the original wooden box. A four-page advertising leaflet for various Chinese language-teaching works by Rev. J. A. Silsby dated Shanghai ca 1911, is loosley inserted. An impressive and very rare survival of a printed tool for learning Chinese. It was probably made for the use of new missionaries coming to China. The most common Chinese characters are to be found here. The flash cards are organized by similar sounds; on the versos provided with romanizations to aid pronounication, and an English translation. Paul Kranz (1866-1920) was a German missionary who lived in China for many years. He wrote many books and articles in Chinese about Christianity as well as he translated classical Confucian texts from literary Chinese into colloquial Chinese, because many modern Chinese could not read age-old language well. He was considered a controversial person among his companions since he beleived that Christianity could never replace Confucianism but only complete it. Kranz published a book titled "Key to the Character Problem" (1910) but we have not been able to find any record of this teaching tool. Most likely they were meant to complement each other.

Album of Vernacular Photographs of Family Life

[no date - circa 1910]. Black cloth photo album. Oblong. Measuring 10" x 7.25". Album contains 21 affixed sepia toned photographs, along with an additional 15 black and white, sepia, or silver print photos laid in, three negatives of a woman on a typewriter, and the personalized handkerchief of Mary A. Pettit. All photos are between 2.5" x 2" and 5.5" x 3.5" and are very good or better with slight edgewear and some creasing. Album has worn corners and rubbing.A prosaic album displaying images of home life, probably from the first decade of the 20th Century, and mostly centered on the activities of women. From the back marks (of the photo studios Bailey and Myers-Cope Company) which appear on some of the loose photographs it can be presumed the families lived somewhere in proximity to Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia. Many of the scenes are of women in fancy hats or perambulating with parasols. Also making an appearance are the occasional men and children, most of whom are posing for portraits, one of a man pretending to drive a car. Among the photos are three negatives of a woman on a typewriter with what appears to be an early Dictaphone-like device. A pleasing album of carefree upper middle class people enjoying the decades before World War and financial hardship would upset the bucolic pace of American life. .
