Taylor and Francis, London 1910 - Robert Millikan (1868-1953), in his first "balanced droplet" experiment using water (before his use of oil), provided the first definitive proof that electric charge is made up of elementary indivisible quantities, and that the charge is not a statistically averaged quantity.       [Ristigouche?: No publisher/printer 8vo (22.5 x 15 cm). 4 pp.. ca. 1910?] Words are in French and Micmac with a musical score arranged for singer and piano accompaniment. This is apparently the first printing of the Micmac national anthem, which seems also to have been issued in the same year in Souvenir d'un IIIe centenaire en pays micmac = Sist gasgemtelnaganipongegeoei migoitetemagani oigatigen (Ste. Anne de Ristigouche [Québec]: Frères mineurs capucins, 1910). => Only one copy traced via WorldCat, in Germany(!), with the Souvenir seeming also to be very little held in libraries; WorldCat locates only three institutions reporting ownership. One leaf, folded. First page with half-inch long tear and another smaller tear at upper left corner, not touching text. Near fine.

Works by Bonnard, Carriere, Cross, Denis, Derain, Friesz, Legrand, Le Sidaner, Luce, Marquet, Redon, Rouault, Vlaminck, Vuillard etc. In the introduction Matisse is refered to as a member of the Symbolist school 'It is from Cezanne too that the Symbolist school derives, the school to which M. Denis himself belongs, although his work shows also the influence of Puvis de Chavannes, while remaining intensely personal. M. Odilon Redon was another of the pioneers of the school, of which Gauguin and M. Henri-Matisse arte prominent examples'. Matisse showed two works both titled 'Nature Morte-Still Life' lent by M.Alphonse Kahn and Walther Epstein, there are pencil annotation by both 'Skied'. Numerous fascinating contemporary pencil annotations, including a small pencil sketch of no.162 a nude by Freisz; 'Monstrous' a Derain Fauve Landscape oil of London with colour notes added in pencil.         FAMOUS IMPOSTORS

1910. [inscribed by Bram Stoker] With Ten Illustrations. London: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1910. Original red cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition (curiously, printed in the United States) of this odd collection of histories of "famous cases of imposture... -- impersonators, pretenders, swindlers, and humbugs of all kinds; those who have masqueraded in order to acquire wealth, position, or fame, and those who have done so merely for the love of the art" (from Stoker's Preface). Some of the chapter titles are "Pretenders," "Practitioners of Magic," "Witchcraft and Clairvoyance," "Women as Men" and "Hoaxes" -- each subdivided into various case histories. Perhaps the most remarkable one is "The Bisley Boy," in which Stoker relates the theory that young Elizabeth I died as a child in the town of Bisley, and was quickly substituted for by a male child, who went on to rule England masquerading as a female.~This copy is in the primary binding (with gilt decorations under the titles, and with top edge gilt), and is in very good-plus condition (scarcely any wear, but the spine is slightly faded and the cloth has some uneven mottling). Dalby 20a.~This is AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY, with (in Stoker's hand) "Hon Maude Stanley from Bram Stoker 28/1/11". Maude Alethea Stanley (1833-1915), daughter of the politician Lord Stanley (2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley), was a noted pioneer in the field of women's welfare and suffrage, and devoted much effort to improving conditions in slums and in asylums. She was also the much-loved maiden aunt of the philosopher Bertrand Russell.

Album of Photographs of British Central Africa

1910. Containing 70 silver print photographs of various dimensions, many captioned in white ink. 1 vols. Large 4to (33.5 x 28 cm.). Contemporary beige buckram, 'Pictured Records' blocked in black on upper cover, 'British Central Africa' added by hand in white; cover worn and a little stained, upper joint partly split. Containing 70 silver print photographs of various dimensions, many captioned in white ink. 1 vols. Large 4to (33.5 x 28 cm.). A handsome album documenting missionary work in a little known area. The party, almost certainly attached to the Church of Scotland Mission, evidently enjoyed their time in Africa as they proceeded from Tanganyika into Central Africa. Among the photographs are shots of a native witch doctor, women preparing food, native sports (including pillow fighting) as well as topographical images. The also found time to hunt and thirteen pages are dedicated to big game. There are images of eland, lion, leopard, elephants, koodoo, bushbuck, hippopotamus, zebra, reedbuck, porcupine, sable, wild boar, buffalo, hartebeeste and wildebeeste. Lastly, there is a photo of the Zomba Church belonging to the Church of Scotland Mission and one of the Blantyre Church which was completed in 1891. Inspired by the example of David Livingstone, the Church of Scotland decided to establish a mission in Malawi in the mid-1870s. It was on the basis of their influence that Malawi became a British Protectorate.

A CALL: A Tale of Two Passions.

London:: Chatto & Windus. 1910.. First edition. This tale of entangled passions written during the crumbling of Ford's first marriage features two main male characters who, in various ways, oscillate between resembling Joseph Conrad, Arthur Marwood, and Ford himself -- three good friends and collegues (on The English Review) whose relationships with each other were in disarray at the time of its writing and publication. The book appeared soon after Ford's falling out with Marwood over then-wife Elsie's accusation that Marwood had made a pass at her. THE INSCRIPTION, WHICH QUOTES FROM PAGE 216 OF THE BOOK, CAN BE READ AS AN APOLOGY OF SORTS FROM FORD: " 'I have evolved what has been the guiding principle of my life: Do what you want & take what you get for it.' / 'And God in His mercy pardon the ills we do,' the priest said. / "I had forgotten that,' Grimshaw said / p. 216 / AP Marwood from Ford Madox Hueffer 9th Feb XCMX." Echoes of Ford's personal life "resound through A CALL ....he represents fictionally his most intimate friends. Robert Grimshaw resembles Joseph Contrad .... Dudley Leicester has striking connections with Arthur Marwood, who was in a few months to replace Ford in Conrad's affections" (Thomas Moser, The Life in the Fiction of Ford Madox Ford, Princeton: 1980, pp.[77]-81). Blue cloth with blind-stamped design to front cover and gilt lettering on front and spine; 32 pages of ads at rear, as called for [Harvey, A28]. Endpapers slightly darkened and lightly foxed, spine a little dulled and spine ends rubbed and beginning to fray, otherwise very good. .

A rare study on the cyclops condition among infants, or one large eye on the face rather than two eyes. This book discusses the medical condition and the history and legend of the cyclops. Signed presentation from Dr. Phalippou on the half-title page, in French: [Translation] "To Dr. Palanque, in memory of our memorable work on `monsters' and in all cordiality. Dr. Ch. Phalippou, Toulouse 15 May, 1910." An extremely rare medical study of a most unusual birth defect. Several sheets of notes by Dr. Raymond Groc, also from Toulouse, laid in but apparently not associated with the cyclops condition.         The North Pole Its Discovery In 1900 Under The Auspices Of The Peary Arctic Club. With An Introduction By Theodore Roosevelt And A Foreword By Gilbert H. Grosvenor, Director and Editor, National Geographic Society

New York: Frederick Stokes Company 1910 - New York: Frederick Stokes Company, 1910. First US Trade Edition. 8vo. [xxxii], 373pp., Appendix I, II, III, Index. 8 colour plates including frontis with tissue guard, 32 double-sided plates with multiple illustrations, large folding coloured map bound at rear. Original decorative cloth, gilt. A Fine copy. Scarce in such excellent condition. Arctic Bibliography 13230. Narrative of Peary's last expedition, 1908-09, on the ÒRooseveltÓ describing the passage through the ice of Smith Sound-Robeson Channel, the wintering at Camp Jesup, Cape Sheridan, north of Ellesmere Island, and the march on the North Pole, which was reportedly reached on April 6, 1909. Peary's record was disputed by Dr. Frederick Cook, who claimed to have preceded him in 1908, but Cook's claim was ultimately disallowed, and most (early) Arctic scientists agree that Peary was the first man to reach the North Pole. The map shows CookÕs Bradley Land slightly to the north of Peary's Crocker Land, indicating this copy is part of the 1st State of the 1st Printing. Subsequent first printings show Crocker Land but omit Cook's Bradley Land. The map, compiled by Gilbert H. Grosvenor, was first produced in 1907 by the National Geographic Society, an impartial institution at the time, and sold for 25 cents. In 1909 it was updated to include Peary's and Cook's routes and, in fairness to Cook, Bradley Land was added to it. The revised map was then reproduced for Peary's narrative The North Pole, but at some point Peary's publishers removed Bradley Land from the printing plates or electrotypes, at Peary's request no doubt. Thus, the copy offered here was one of those that got away before Peary noticed the discrepancy and shut down the press for a while. Copies of the 'Ice Edition' in the First State are scarce.         LES CYCLOPES ETUDE SCIENTIFIQUE ET LITTERAIRE

1910 - PHALIPPOU, Charles. LES CYCLOPES: ETUDE SCIENTIFIQUE LITTERAIRE. Illustrated. Paris: J.B. Bailliere et Fils Editeurs, 1910. Small quarto, printed wraps; 223 pages. First Edition. A rare study on the cyclops condition among infants, or one large eye on the face rather than two eyes. The condition is apparently caused by a chromosomal defect and the infants rarely live for more than one week although, in one documented case, the child lived for 10 years. Very Good (little wear wraps with shallow dampstain to top edge of front cover & front endpaper, else contents clean & tight). $1,750.00. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Ravel has penned the opening six notes from his piece "Ma mère l'oye " ["Mother Goose] in dark fountain pen ink. He adds an inscription and signs in full, "Maurice Ravel." Neatly laid down to an album page. Slight wrinkling to upper card otherwise in very fine condition. Scarce in this format. Maurice Ravel wrote "Mother Goose" as a piano duet for two young piano students, Mimi and Jean Godebski, the children of his close friends Cipa and Ida Godebski. They were a Polish family living in Paris and originally friends of Ravel's father. Ravel often stayed at their country house near Fontainebleau, and it was here that he completed his composition of "Ma mère l'oye" for Mimie and Jean. Ravel intended that the two children would give the work's first performance, but they did not debut the piano duet in April 20,1910. The piece was transcribed for solo piano by Ravel's friend Jacques Charlot the same year as it was published (1910).

Photo Albums]: Camp National. National Electric Lamp Association Camp held at Association Island, Henderson, New York

National Electric Lamp Association, [Association Island, Henderson Harbor, New York 1910 - Three volumes, each an oblong folio (each approximately 13.5" x 11"). [48; 24; 16]pp. Thick card stock covers in tan, blue, and red with decorative elements. Containing 401 original tipped-in silver gelatin photographs ranging in size from 1" rounds to 6.25" x 9", all mounted into the albums, mostly with printed text captions. Additionally present are 101 tipped-in color images, playbills, programs, small booklets (ranging in size from 16mo. to octavo) and with a TLS laid into the first volume addressed to William Lockwood Coale (1870-1929), general manager and sales director for the Sterling Electric Manufacturing Company, and one of the founding members of the National Electric Lamp Association Camp, who continued to work in the incandescent lamp industry until his accidental death from a baseball injury in 1929. Some modest edgewear, creasing, and bumping at the corners of the albums, a minor closed tear at the spine of one volume, but still attractive and near fine. Three wonderful souvenir photo albums for management retreats hosted by the N.E.L.A., filled with over 500 items. Apparently created for the attendees (one has a title page; the other two do not), lavishly produced souvenir albums filled with original photographs, playbills, broadsides, and the texts of talks by participants for the National Electric Lamp Association at their Camp National on Association Island in Henderson Harbor, New York, which was purchased in 1905 from private owners and renamed. This lavishly appointed island contained a town hall, dining hall with a full staff of waitresses and housekeepers, a hospital tent, swimming pool, areas for tents, recreational trap shooting, baseball diamonds, a theatre, and a marina for sport boating. The albums vividly portray how these mid-summer retreats were filled with conferences, but also devoted to the executives reliving the joys of the summer camp retreats of well-to-do childhoods during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They created pennants, went sport fishing, played in tennis tournaments, croquet matches, poker games, baseball tournaments (won by The Boiler Makers in 1908), parades, costume parties, minstrel shows, plays, parties, and more. These Camp National events ended when General Electric acquired N.E.L.A. in 1911 and began using Association Island as a corporate retreat and training center for G.E. executives, customers, and employees through the end of the 1950s. The Elfun Society, G.E.'s famed think-tank was founded in 1928 on the island and named in honor of the historic elm tree (depicted on the cover of the first volume). G.E.'s use of Association Island even served as the basis for Kurt Vonnegut's first novel, *Player Piano* in 1952, a satire of the antics of engineers and managers of a large unnamed corporation on their annual retreat. The N.E.L.A. was founded at the end of the 19th Century during a great deal of turmoil in the incandescent lamp industry, and a number of small lamp manufacturers needed to pool their resources in order to compete with G.E. Ironically Franklin Terry, Burton and Henry Tremaine, and John and Robert Crouse founded the Association in 1901 with 75% of the needed capital coming from G.E. who was to remain a silent partner. A number of the small companies such as Sterling Electric, The Economy Electric Co., and many others were able to use the labs set up by N.E.L.A. and within a few years had gained nearly 50% of the total lamp production in the United States. However, in 1911 the U.S. Government brought an anti-trust suit against the N.E.L.A., and G.E. exercised their option to buy the remaining 25% and they officially all became part of General Electric, forming the National Quality Lamp Division. (See *Association Island's History* (2015); *Nela Park: A Brief Early History*).In any event an elaborate, exhaustive, and greatly amusing group of three souvenir photo albums that provide an excellent insight into men's fraternal carryings on at Summer camp.
