No place, no date, ca. 1910-15, no publisher. Color folding. map, opens up to 35 x 49 cm., folds down to 21 x 17 cm.,with. English inset key to numbered places, nicely executed.. This lovely map shows the Russian Quarter at the upper left, with a color key to the roads, various towns, railways, light railways, arable land, groves, rivers, main roads and principal buildings to the right. The "New Town," was desig- gned and layed out by the Japanese as its foothold in the area, shows the main streets with Japanese names, with their rail head of the South Manchuria Railway from Mukden and Dairen, which continues as the Kirin-Changchun line of Chin- ese Government Railways. The South Manchuria Co. Light rail- way to Taochiatun & Shihpiling off to the right. Below this is the old [Chinese] townof Shang-fou Ti. The map scale is 1/15,000. Nicely executed, this map shows the source of conflict between the Japanese vs. the Chinese and Russians. During this time there was great controversy about the Jap- anese control of the various railway lines, and the Chinese continued to sabotage the Japanese railways in a form of protest against Japanese occupation and harsh rule in China and especially in North China and the Manchurian area. The map shows how the Japanese isolated their "new town" above the river in a stratigic move away from the old Chinese town in an effort to protect their assets and new rail head. The key to places shows a large number of Japanese governmental and commercial interests, as well as a Bank of Chosen the Japanese name for [Korea]. A very good and obscure example.       [Bermuda, 1910. Oblong folio. Contemporary three-quarter pebbled leather and cloth, gilt. Spine neatly repaired in matching calf. Gift inscription penciled on a front blank. Images generally crisp and clean. Very good. In a red cloth clamshell box, gilt leather label. A fascinating collection of early 20th-century photographs of Bermuda, from one of the noted local photographers of the era, William Weiss. Most of the photographs are stamped by Weiss's photography studio in the negative, and those that are not stamped are very likely also Weiss compositions. William Weiss was a commercial photographer active in Bermuda from about 1902 until his death in 1925. Many of the images here are iconic representations of Bermudian locations, also appearing later in reproductions, both monochromatic and in color, and on postcards. Some locations or subjects are identified in the image negative. The identifications within the images include the "Hotel Frascati," "Joyce's Dock Cave," "Date Palms" (two copies), "Cannon Rock," "A Fisherman's Home," "Whalers in Harbor," "Bananas," "H.M.S. PSYCHE in Dock," "Oldest House," "Devil's Hole," "Paw Paw," "Victoria Park," "Cedar Ave.," "Coral Rock," "Sperm Whale," "Screw Palm," "Swinging Bridge," "Royal Palms" (two copies), "Khyber Pass," "St. George's," "South Shore" (two different views), "Coca Nut Palm," "Gibbs Hill Light House," "Rock Quarry," "Lily Field," "Hamilton Harbor," "Tom Moore's House," "View from Gibbs Hill," "Ordinance Island," and "Rubber Tree." Eleven images feature human subjects, usually at work or utilized for reasons of perspective against architectural backgrounds. Of those photographs with human subjects, six contain images of people of color, including a delightful image of a older man playing a banjo while three children stand beside him, accompanying him on the triangle, snare drum, and tambourine, respectively. Determining an exact date for the album is a bit difficult. The image of the HMS Psyche in dry dock in Hamilton, Bermuda was taken in 1902 or 1903, after Weiss's arrival in Bermuda, but before the Psyche shipped out of Bermuda for service in Australia in December of 1903. So it is not logical that any earlier date could be assigned to the album than 1902. The album itself is stamped from the Bay City, Michigan studio of the photographic firm of Harman & Verner, which according to David Tinder's DIRECTORY OF EARLY MICHIGAN PHOTOGRAPHERS closed shop in 1911. As a result, it is fairly reasonable to assume that the album was assembled between 1902 and 1910, and probably nearer the earlier date. An exceptional assemblage of early Bermudian photography by one of the early masters of the art on the island. Together these images provide a rich picture of life in Bermuda, of the hardscrabble life of the inhabitants set against the beauty of the landscape, the harbor, the sea, the flora, the architecture, and more.

Chicago [c.1910], Rand McNally. Dark gray stiff wrs., holds. a large color folding map, opens to 69.5 x 53 cm.,folds down. to ca. 10 x 22 cm., covers are ca. 11 x 23.5 cm., very clean. bright nice copy.. SUPERB FOLDING MAP OF EASTERN ASIA A very nice early period map, showing the new possessions of Japan. Shows the Japanese controlled or annexed areas: Chosen, Taiwan and Karafuto & Riukiu Islands [Okinawa]. Also sows all of China from Lake Bikal, Manchuria, Mongolia, Inner Mongolia , all of the provinces, down to Hainan, the tip of Luzon, Turkestan, Takalamakan & Gobi Deserts, Tibet, India, Bhutan, Burma, Siam, Tonking [N. Vietnam] and that region. * KOREA: Korea was occupied and declared a Japanese protectorate in the 1905 under the Eulsa Treaty, and officially annexed in 1910 through the annexation treaty. Japan's involvement in the region began with the 1876 Treaty of Ganghwa during the Japanese called the "Joseon" period. * Korea continued to ruled by Japan for some 35-years as part of the imperialist expansion from 22 August 1910 to 15 August 1945. Japanese rule ended in 1945 upon the Japanese defeat in World War II. * TAIWAN: Between 1895 and 1945, Taiwan was a dependency of the Empire of Japan. The expansion into Taiwan was a part of Imperial Japan's general policy of southward expansion during the late 19th century. * As Taiwan was Japan's first overseas colony, Japanese intentions were to turn the island into a showpiece "model colony". As a result, much effort was made to improve the island's economy, industry, public works and to change its culture. Japan's control ended in 1945 like that of Korea. *** The key, shows a scale 1:8,744,000, miles and kilometers, railroads and canals. * The map is done in nice colors, with each province separated in red, rivers in black, international borders in red and yellow. * An excellent turn of the century map, nicely done, in excellent condition. * Color scans can be sent by email.       New York. 1910-1911. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 12". Black textured cloth over paper boards. Contains 87 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 5" x 7", without captions. Album is very good with some edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an unnamed woman while she was attending Briarcliff College in Briarcliff Manor, New York from 1910 to 1911. The album shows the year of 1910 to 1911 with photos of the women participating in a cooking class, various theatrical performances, and posing around the campus. One photo shows the women in various costumes, some of them dressed as men, clowns, and one in black face, with a hand drawn poster that says "Roasted Puppies" in the background. The women are also shown enjoying the seasons from ice skating in winter to picnicking in spring. One photo displays the women as a group playing mandolins and guitars. Another photo shows a small group of girls sitting in a field with rifles in the foreground.A nice collection of photographs representing a women's college in 1910 displaying the creativity and quirkiness of its students. .

1910. Original photograph album. Modern boards. Very Good. This album contains 11 silver-gelatin prints, taken and numbered by a professional, and featuring a panoramic view of Kingston, three years after the city was devastated by the 1907 earthquake. The images are mounted onto black cardstock leaves, with typewritten captions. Bound in black boards, printed cover label, 10" x 13.5". The photographs vary in size from 9.5" x 7.75" to 4.75" x 3.75" Highlighting customary pleasures such as tobacco, trading at the Jubilee Market, and traditional costume and dwellings, these photographs are significant in that they illustrate the reconstruction and preservation of an important Caribbean community after it was razed by a natural disaster. In these views of Kingston as well as surrounding villages and a banana plantation, the photographer captures the essence of indigenous life more than a century ago. The island's natural features, recorded on a motorcar sojourn, include the exquisite Castleton Garden, a panoramic birdseye view of Kingston, local men and women at work, &c.

- DABEI: Ein Kuvert (Dahn an Theodor Kohn, Wien, Harmoniegasse 8.       [New York] 1910 - 3-1/4 pages, typescript, with pencil and ink corrections, on four leaves of foolscap. The corrected typescript of this exceptional, personal and anecdotal memoir by Carnegie of his longtime friend, with scattered corrections and revisions throughout (in at least two hands, including Carnegie's), and signed by him in pencil at the conclusion. The typescript is docketed in ink on the verso of the last leaf in ink in an unknown hand: "N.A.R. Mark Twain Andrew Carnegie," and caption titled in pencil at the top of the first page in the same hand. While readily accessible public records include Carnegie among the attendees at the 23 April Memorial Service for Clemens in New York, it does not appear that he delivered a eulogy there, or in the days immediately following. Rather, he chose to publish a tribute to Clemens in the June issue of THE NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW, and the working typescript in hand is the basis for that tribute. After opening on a grand note ("'Mark Twain gone! - such the refrain that comes to my lips at intervals. The gaiety of nations eclipsed, the most original genius of our age and one of the sweetest, noblest men that ever lived"), Carnegie turns to the personal and particular, writing of their first meeting (". we met may years ago upon the ocean . He told me , much to my surprise that the idea of 'A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur' came from reading my first literary outburst . I was young then and naturally greatly flattered that the business man should be hailed as fellow-author. The intimacy continued to grow until I could safely consider myself one of his circle"), and of how, in time, "My admiration for him increased as I knew him better, until great as the author was, the man, the friend took first place." He recounts his meeting with Clemens after the death of his wife, tells a lengthy anecdote about his providing whiskey as a tonic during Clemens's illness, commends Clemens's treatment of his creditors during his financial crisis, and remarks on Clemens's wrath in the face of injustice. He nears his conclusion: "And so he passed away with the smile upon his face. Nor would we have it otherwise. Mark Twain has nothing to dread hereafter and he now rests close by the side of his wife and children all having preceded him save one. The earth had lost its charm, and philosopher to the last, he was ready to go .," and after a selection of verse, finishes poignantly and personally: "And yet - and yet - I find the tears drop as I write" [Carnegie's spelling errors are corrected and the revisions included in these quotations]. Less than a year before his death, Clemens had stood in tribute to Carnegie at a dinner in his friend's honor held by the Lotos Club. Folded and a bit used, with pin-holes in upper left corner and some occasional minor soiling, otherwise very good. Half morocco folding clamshell case 3-1/4 pages, typescript, with pencil and ink corrections, on four leaves of foolscap [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Typed letter signed from Michael F. Guyer to Thomas H. Morgan Dated Dec. 7, 1910 4 pages attempting to clarify his place in the history of the rediscovery of Mendelism. With a few of his mentioned offprints.

Michael F. Guyer. UNBOUND. "Dear Professor Morgan: In rereading you interesting discussion on the chromosomes in heredity (Am. Nat., Aug), I note on page 466 that you state that Sutton, Wilson, and Boveri were the first to point out the possible relation between reduction divisions and inheritance in hybrids. From the footnote concerning Boveri I infer that you are striving for historical accuracy, and since this is the case I should like to call your attention to the fact that long before any of their work appeared I had made the same suggestion, not only in one but in several of my papers. The papers of such an authority as you are naturally looked on as standard, and most of your pupils as well as those of other investigators will accept matters of historical statement like this unquestioningly and pass them on in their own papers without making further chronological review of the ground themselves. I beg leave, therefore, to call your attention to some matters of historical fact. First I should like to call your attention to the inclosed clipping from an article of mine which appeared in the ZOOLOGICAL BULLETIN, II, 5 for 1899. At a glance you can see that it deals essentially with what we now call the Mendelian phenomena although at that time, of course, Mendelism had not yet had it's renaissance. At the time the article was published I had not figured out the Mendelian ration of 3 to 1, although I was aware that there were more brown than white birds among the grand-decensants. The point I want to make, however, is that in this return to grand-parental types I had a definite problem in mind which I was seeking a solution." Three more pages of the letter provide his proof of his findings and the timeline. Included offprint from Cincinnati Lancet-Clinic May 9, 1903: The Germ Cell and the Results of Mendel. Signed by Guyer, with a line in the margin providing his proof from 1900. A page from his 1899 paper: Ovarian Structure in an Abnormal Pigeon with some staining, and the first page crossed out leaving page 212 only. His 1909 offprint: Atavism in Guinea-Chicken Hybrids. Most of the archive is in good to very good condition. The edge of the letter pages are creased with some tearing. Included is a copy of Guyer's 1900 Dissertation "Compliments of the Author" in ink front cover. Later "Hampton Carson" stamp of ownership. As well as Guyer's 1909 offprint entitled The Spermatogenesis of the Domestic Guinea (Numida meleagris dom.) Inscribed "Compliments of the author" has Edmund B. Wilson's ownership stamp front cover. "Michael F. Guyer was professor of zoology at the University of Wisconsin. In 1902, he independently discovered Mendel's laws from the cytology of spermatogenesis in pigeon hybrids."
