        Autograph signed letter.

One and half pages on a single leaf. Victoria Street, London; 26th February 1910; 4to. On British Antarctic Expedition, 1910 stationery. Written in the year he commanded his second Antarctic expedition, this letter begins with the word "Private" penned boldly above the greeting. He declines an invitation "I hope you will forgive me for writing to you candidly on this subject. My time is fully occupied and beyond the preparation for my expedition my whole effort has to be devoted to completing funds." Unlike the Discovery expedition, where fund raising was handled by the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society, the Terra Nova Expedition was organised as a private venture without significant institutional support. Scott estimated the total cost at £40,000 (£3 million at 2009 values), half of which was eventually met by a government grant. The balance was raised by public subscription and loans. The fund raising task was largely carried out by Scott, and was a considerable drain on his time and energy, continuing in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand after Terra Nova had sailed from British waters. The letter goes on "I have made an appeal to City Companies which has only been responded to in 3 cases and it would be a waste of my time to attend a dinner without the hope of obtaining help for my enterprise." A fascinating letter with a number of crossings out and obviously written in haste reflecting the strain Scott was under to raise funds for his final expedition to the Antarctic from which he would never return. Very good, folds, a number of short tears to right margin and corners reinforced.

        The People's Rights

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First edition. Paperback. This is a premium copy of the first edition, first state of this striking, scarce, and fragile early collection of Churchill's speeches, imperfect as are all examples of this fragile edition, but markedly more bright, complete, and well-preserved than most we see. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. In 1910, when The People's Rights was published, Winston Churchill was a powerful political force and a member of the Cabinet. From December 3-11, 1909 Churchill was on the campaign trail on behalf of the Liberals. The People's Rights is a distillation of these nine days of speeches, criticizing the House of Lords (which had rejected the Liberal Government's budget, thus precipitating the campaign) and championing Free Trade, a graduated income tax, luxury tax, and surtaxes on unearned income. Churchill's efforts were not wasted; as a result of the election, the Liberals would achieve a slim majority and passage of their budget. The People's Rights was published in an exceptionally perishable form, in bright yellow-orange paper wraps (with a halftone photo of Churchill on the cover) and printed on cheap, pulp paper. Consequently few copies survive, and wear, losses, and general deterioration is common to those copies that endure. Given the inherent fragility of the edition, this copy is in remarkably good condition, notable for being both an exceptionally clean, bright example and for being so nearly complete. Please also note that this copy is the first state of the first edition, confirmed by an Index rather than a second Appendix at pages 149-152 and a pagination error at p.71. The illustrated wraps retain strikingly vivid color and show almost no soiling. Both front and rear wraps are complete, apart from a miniscule hole to the upper front cover and fractional chipping to the rear cover fore edge and hinge. The spine is also unusually complete, with no loss at the head and clear title, author, price, and publisher print. We note minor chipping at the spine heel to a depth of .25 inch and a two inch split at the lower front hinge. The contents are toned, as inevitable with the cheap pulp paper, but both less toned and less brittle than is typical, with no dog-eared or chipped page corners. We find no previous ownership marks.         African Game Trails. An Account of the African Wanderings of an American Hunter-Naturalist.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1910. Signed Limited First edition. Large octavo, two volumes, original three-quarter tan pigskin. One of only 500 copies signed by Theodore Roosevelt, with fifty illustrations, including photographs, photogravures, drawings and a map. In near fine condition. "One of the most famous of all big-game hunting epics, this, with its larger than life sportsmen, was almost continuously in print until the 1930s. In British East Africa, Roosevelt hunted lion and plains game on the Kapiti Plains, while, in the Bondoni hill country, he collected rhinoceros and giraffe. On Juja Farm, his son Kermit faced leopard, while Teddy bagged rhino and hippopotamus. On the Kamiti River, buffalo were taken. Near the Sotik, additional rhino and lion were hunted, with elephant bagged near Mt. Kenia. On the Guaso Nyiro, giraffe and a variety of plains game were shot. Further adventures included hunting elephant near Lake Nyanza, rhino and plains game in the Lado, and eland on the Nile. Roosevelt?s total bag was enormous even by the liberal standards of that era" (Czech, 138-39).

Die Ausstellung von Meisterwerken Muhammedanischer Kunst in München 1910. Munich, F. Bruckmann, 1912.

1910. Imperial folio (490 x 387 mm). 3 vols. With 257 monochrome and mounted color plates. Original brown cloth decorated in black and green. First edition, one of 430 numbered copies (vol. 1: no. 240; vols. 2 and 3: no. 12). The 1910 Exhibition of Masterpieces of Islamic Art, held in Munich, marks a crucial moment in the translation of Islamic objects into Western objets d'art. At the exhibition itself the monumental catalogue was unprecedented in its size and splendour. It was printed in a limited press run with each copy numbered individually and is rarely encountered complete. The first volume covers Islamic manuscripts, book decorations, and carpets. The second volume is dedicated to ceramics and metalwork, glass and crystal, while volume III describes draperies, weaponry, woodwork, and ivory. With contributions by Max van Berchem, Camillo List, Ernst Kühnel, Ernst Bassermann-Jordan, Ernst Diez, Moriz Dreger, S. Schröder, and Arnold Nöldeke. - Vol. 1 shows occasional slight browning, otherwise an excellent, clean copy in the publisher's original bindings. Enay/Azadi 516.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Bergeroc, 3. X. 1910.

Wissen Sie was Bestimmtes? Nun sehen Sie [...]". - Poldini lebte seit 1899 als Komponist und Musiklehrer in Genf und seit 1908 in Bergeroc bei Vevey. Er komponierte Märchenopern (u. a. "Dornröschen"), die 1924 in Budapest uraufgeführte komische Oper "Hochzeit im Fasching" sowie Männerchöre, Kammermusik und Klavierstücke.

Five autograph letters signed in full to Tetrazzini's cook, Maria Manori

      - - 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated April 12, 1910. On stationery with the address "Two Hundred and Forty-Five West End Avenue" embossed at head. Tetrazzini bids Manori farewell until the latter returns to her service in November. She hopes to receive news from Manori while she is at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. "I am leaving you these few lines not to say 'farewell', but 'see you in November.' This letter will serve as a certificate of your honest, good, and wise service. I thank you for all the attention you have given me, and don't forget that in November I want you back in my service. Lina and Palmina send regards."- 4 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated [London, May 10, 1910.] On blue stationery with Tetrazzini's monogram and London address embossed at head. With original autograph envelope. As promised, Tetrazzini provides Manori with a lengthy account of her activities during a sea voyage, and in London. She mentions the death and national mourning of King Edward VII, during which time her theatre was closed. Next week, she will write her Milan lawyer about sending Manori's children to America. I am glad the chicks are well, the dear little animals, so innocent and pretty; let's hope they live. The American newspapers wrote what they wanted to, but it is not true that I was ill on the ship. On the contrary, I never had such a beautiful voyage, always well, happy, content. Mr. Bazelli is also very well and weighs 90 kilos; so you can see he feels great. In London we are in mourning for King Edward's death. We closed the theatre for 10 days and Friday I will re-open it, as everyone is expecting me." - 3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated London, July 4, 1910. On blue stationery with Tetrazzini's monogram and London address embossed at head. With original autograph envelope. Tetrazzini is sorry to hear about Manori's tribulations. She has charged her lawyer to help find Manori's missing children. She encloses 10 scudi, and send regards from Palmina, Adelina, and Mr. Bazelli. "Be courageous, good Maria, for God forsakes no one. I have already taken steps to find your two children in Florence and so as soon as I find out something I will immediately send it to America. I have charged my lawyer to look into it and hope to succeed in what I promised. I hope to find you good and slim and younger on my return. Thanks, too, for the news you gave me about my chicks."- 2 pp. on a postal card. Dated Ostand, August 7, 1911. With Manori's Lugano address (at the Villa Tetrazzini) notated to recto, and a photograph of the Palace Hotel and the name of photographer's studio ("De Graeve, Gand") to verso. While she is away, Tetrazzini wants Manori to oversee certain household chores at the Villa Tetrazzini. "I recommend that you be sure that the gardener waters the plants and that the workmen continue working at the villa with alacrity. I also hope the furniture people brought beds and some more furniture there. Take care of the dogs, birds, and everything. Say hello to Elisa and remain calm. We will be in Lugano on the 18th." - 1 page fragment. Octavo. N.d. ".Just leave it to me. Nothing new for now except that we are well, as I hope you and your family are. Regards from Palmina, from Adelina and from Mr. Bazelli. A kiss from me, your mistress."All in Italian (with translation). Some signs of wear and soiling; creased at folds; occasional minor defects. Italian soprano Luisa Tetrazzini made her debut in 1890, and sang in St. Petersburg, Madrid, Buenos Aires, and Mexico before causing a sensation as Violetta in 1907 at Covent Garden. In 1908, she triumphed at the Manhattan Opera House, and later appeared briefly at the Metropolitan Opera and in Chicago and Boston. She made numerous lucrative concert tours, appearing for the last time in New York in 1931, and in London in 1934."Tetrazzini possessed technical gifts of the highest order, and could dazzle audiences with the ease and agility of her chromatic scales, both ascending and des [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1910. 4to. 2 pp. To an unidentified recipient, refusing an essay and referencing Carl Jung, who was at the time editor of the "Jahrbuch für psychoanalytische und psychopathologische Forschungen": "Your various remarks make it easier for me to answer your question as to whether we can accept your patient's biography. I am not the editor, though you do assume correctly that Jung would take my request into account. As an editor I would have reservations about accepting the essay, as it consists only of autobiographical material without any analysis and we need the space more urgently for other things than collections of material. No matter how exact a self-account is, it is always something quite different from analysis, and cannot approach analysis even through an increase of details and sincerity" (transl.). - Left margin with punched holes (slightly touching letters), folds.

Autograph letter signed ("RScott"). Christchurch, New Zealand, 22. XI. 1910.

1910. 4to. 1 p. A "private note under the exceptional circumstances" of his dismissal of Thomas Feather, boatswain of the Terra Nova, written to Sir Richard Poore: "[...] Mr Feather has only one suit of uniform and for this and other reasons, he is anxious to get home at the earliest opportunity. As I said I am very desirous to meet his wishes in view of the heavy punishment of his dismissal [...] All our arrangements are going on well [...]". - Feather had occupied the same position on the Discovery expedition, and accompanied Scott on the Western Journey; Mount Feather in the Quartermain Mountains is named after him. Scott had then praised him as "a thorough seaman, [who] took that intense pride in his charge which was so well known in the old sailing days"; he reportedly discharged Feather from the Terra Nova as a result of friction between him and Lieutenant Henry Rennick. - Printed heading of British Antarctic Expedition, stamp and two annotations by recipient; edges slightly frayed, and somewhat wrinkled.
