O zasadzie sprzecznosci u Arystotelesa

Krakow: Akademia Umiejetnosci, 1910. ukasiewicz, Jan (1878-1956). O zasadzie sprzeczno ci u Arystotelesa. Studyum krytyczne. [4], 210, [2]pp. Krakow: Akademia Umiejetno ci, 1910. 199 x 140 mm. Half cloth, paste paper boards ca. 1913, number stamped on spine, label and deaccessioning stamp of the University of Lodz’s Biblioteka Instytutu Filosofii. Library stamps / markings on title, verso title and one other leaf, but very good. First Edition, and very scarce on the market, with no copies in auction records. ukasiewicz’s first book, on the principle of contradiction in Aristotle’s writings, marks his earliest attempt to “open up on logic vistas comparable to those opened in geometry by the introduction of non-Euclidian systems” (McCall, Polish Logic, 1920-1938, p. 2). ukasiewicz, a Polish logician and philosopher, introduced mathematical logic into Poland and was one of the principal founders, architects and teachers of the Warsaw school of logic. “His most famous achievement was to give the first rigorous formulation of many-valued logic. He introduced many improvements in propositional logic, and became the first historian of logic to treat the subject’s history from the standpoint of modern formal logic . . . “Of all the works ukasiewicz published before World War I, one most clearly anticipated his later concerns. This was the 1910 monograph On the Principle of Contradiction in Aristotle. It marked a crucial turning point in the development of the Lwów-Warsaw school. For ukasiewicz it represented the first sustained questioning of the assumptions of traditional Aristotelian logic. “ ukasiewicz introduces the project of his monograph, a critical investigation of the legitimacy of the Principle of Contradiction (PC) as variously formulated by Aristotle, in the context of its critique by Hegel and the opportunity to re-examine the PC in the light of the development of mathematical logic from Boole to Russell . . . “ ukasiewicz distinguishes three different, non-equivalent versions of PC in Aristotle: an ontological version, a logical version, and a psychological version, as follows: Ontological (OPC): No object may at the same time possess and not possess the same property. Logical (LPC): Contradictory statements are not simultaneously true. Psychological (PPC): No one can simultaneously believe contradictory things. “ ukasiewicz criticises Aristotle for on the one hand claiming PC cannot be proved, and on the other hand attempting an indirect or pragmatic ‘proof’ . . . ukasiewicz described himself later as attempting in the monograph to devise a ‘non-Aristotelian logic’ but admits that he did not succeed, principally because at this stage he was not prepared to reject the principle of bivalence (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Rare in commerce.

Original Tunic from the 1910 Ballets Russes "Schéhérazade."

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A printed cotton tunic, designed by Leon Bakst in 1910 for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes' 'Schéhérazade', of rust-red and blue satinised cotton, printed with silver droplets and golden stripes, prestud fastened to neck, the hem edged in tousled silver braid. The costume for an aide-de-camp to Shahriar, the design illustrated in "The Art of Ballets Russes: The Serge Lifar Collection of Theater Designs, Costumes, and Paintings at the Wadsworth Atheneum" (Schouvaloff), p. 64. Provenance: Sotheby & Co, 3rd March, 1973, lot 52.

Schéhérazade, a ballet in one act, was first performed by the Ballets Russes on the 4th of June 1910 at the Théâtre National de l'Opéra, Paris. Choreographed by Michel Fokine to music by Rimsky-Korsakov, the scenery and the costumes were both by Bakst. The first performances created a sensation, with the designs by Bakst building on the powerful visual effects of his earlier Cléopâtre. This dance drama was the first production completely devised by Diaghilev and his "miriskusniki" (members of the artistic movement inspired by the magazine 'Mir iskusstva' ['World of Art']) collaborators, bringing together vivid visual spectacle, powerful choreography and a re-orchestrated version of the 1888 symphonic suite that Rimsky-Korsakov had based on tales from The arabian nights. Bakst's costumes, including the present tunic, are an imagined orientalist amalgam of Ottoman and Persian styles. With gold body paint and bejeweled outfit, Nijinsky commanded the stage with his voluptuous and feline performance as Zoebéide's favorite slave. Against the set's emerald green walls and red carpets, the massed costumes of dancers in frenzied motion created a moving spectacle of color intensifying towards the ballet's orgiastic and violent climax. Included with the costume is a fine copy of the 1916 sumptuous souvenir program published by the Metropolitan Ballet Company for the first American tour of the Ballets Russes. It features many full-color illustrations of costumes and scenery by Leon Bakst and others, including a two-page color spread of one of the sets from Schéhérazade.

      - Rechts unten vom Künstler signiert und datiert: U. 73 (Bleisitft). Künstler- Vita: Willi Ulfig (* 26. November 1910 in Breslau; † 5. Februar 1983 in Regensburg). Jahrhunderts wiederentdeckt. (Siehe Wikipedia). Zustand: Ränder leicht bestoßen, sonst wohl gepflegt und tadellos erhalten. Photograph Album Documenting the Harvard-Boston Aero Meet of 1910

Boston, 1910. Photograph Album. Very good. 54 3.5" x 4.5" photographs, each mounted on a separate leaf, in a 5.5" x 7" album with a maroon suede cover. All of the photographs are captioned. The photographs are in very nice shape. The album has some minor edge-wear, primarily at the head and tail of the spine. The Harvard-Boston Aero Meet, (3-13 September 1910) was the second aviation competition to be held in the United States and the single most important event in stimulating the growth of early American aviation. The meet offered more than $40,000 in prize money for contests in speed, distance, duration, altitude, landing accuracy, and bomb dropping that drew aviators from around the world including Wilbur Wright, Glenn Curtiss, Claude Grahame-White, and A. V. Roe. Each day, thousands attended the event which was held on the recently created Harvard Aviation Field on Squantum Peninsula. Numerous dignitaries were in attendance including President Taft and his family, Russian Ambassador Baron Rosen, Governor Draper, Mayor Fitzgerald, and tennis champion Eleanora Sears. In addition to the fixed wing aircraft and their pilots, eighteen-year-old Cromwell Dixon flew his dirigible (which at one point lost power and almost floated out over the open sea to certain death). Grahame-White was the star of the meet. He won more contests than any other pilot and was a public relations sensation as well. He gave flights to Mayor Fitzgerald, Lieutenant Governor Frothingham, and anyone willing to pay $500 for a 15-minute flight including a number of society ladies. This important collection of photographs includes images of Cromwell Dixon and his dirigible, Wilbur Wright and his flyer, Claude Grahame-White with both his Farman biplane and Bleriot monoplane, Glenn Curtiss and his biplane, Clifford Harmon, A. V. Roe, W. Starling Burgess, President Taft and his family, Walter Brookins flying his plane in a full circle, the Roe triplane, airplanes in flight, airplane wrecks, the "battleship" target for the bombing contest, planes under construction, the crowd, and more. Exceptionally scarce. As of the 2016 there is nothing similar in the trade and there are no auction records for any similar albums or collections listed at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows no institutional holdings, however one similar album is located at Harvard's Baker Library.

IN FAYER: A DRAMA IN DRAY AKTEN

Vilna; Ferlag ?di Velt?; Vilner Farlag Fun B. A. Kletskin, [1910]. Later boards. 8vo. 78 pages. 22 cm. First edition. In Yiddish. ?In Fire?, a drama in three acts. ? Written by A Vayter (also Waiter; pseudonym of Ayzik Meyer Devenishski; ca. 1878?1919) ; ?Yiddish writer, political activist, and cultural figure. Born in a shtetl in the Vilna region to a strictly observant family that operated a tavern, Ayzik Meyer Devenishski received a traditional Jewish education. In his youth, he became familiar with Haskalah literature, and later studied Russian and Polish literature and the works of radical and revolutionary thinkers. Devenishski left the traditional world and joined the Bund at the time of its inception. He was active in Kovno, Minsk, and Vilna under his party pseudonym ?Comrade Aron, ? and endeavored to strengthen the national elements of the Bund platform. Devenishski was arrested several times and exiled to Siberia. When his term of exile was over, Devenishski settled in Vilna in 1905, where he contributed to the local Russian press. He played a central role in the revolutionary events of 1905 in Vilna. In 1906, he began his career as a Yiddish writer with a short story under his new pseudonym, A. Vayter, and from then on his literary work was increasingly important to him. Vayter?s transition from political to cultural activities is seen as emblematic of significant circles of the Jewish intelligentsia after the failure of the first Russian Revolution. Along with Shmuel Niger and Shemaryahu Gorelik, Vayter coedited the pioneering journal Literarishe monatshriftn (Literary Monthly) in 1908; he wrote its manifesto postulating a renaissance of Jewish culture and calling for the return of Jewish intelligentsia to it. Vayter also began writing plays, among which Der shtumer (The Mute; 1912) became popular and was produced often, mainly by amateur theater groups. His plays and short stories focus on the disillusionment of modern Jewish intellectuals as they tried to find a way back to traditional yidishkayt. In that period, he also showed great interest in modern Yiddish theater, both in his critical essays and reviews and through his organizational work with Y. L. Peretz and other writers. From 1909 to 1911, Vayter was on the editorial staff of Der fraynd, where he published?among other pieces?the first review of Dovid Bergelson?s literary debut. In 1911, Vayter became the manager of the B. Kletskin publishing house in Vilna, considered from the very beginning to be the preeminent Yiddish publishing house in Eastern Europe. In 1918, Vayter returned to Vilna after several years of Siberian exile. He was very involved in Yiddish cultural activities that had taken root there during the months of Bolshevik rule. When the Poles entered Vilna in April 1919, they carried out a bloody pogrom, and Polish legionnaires executed Vayter by firing squad after falsely accusing him of being a Bolshevik. The memory of his murder became a symbol reminding Jews both of the brutal antisemitic attitude on the part of Poles in the first months of Poland?s independence and of the specific problems that characterized the situation of Jews in Vilna between the two World Wars. This symbol was embodied in the monument at Vayter?s grave in the Jewish cemetery in Vilna. Immediately following the author?s death, Vayter-bukh: Tsum ondenk fun Vayter (Vayter Book: In Memory of Vayter; 1920) was published under the editorship of Shmuel Niger and Zalmen Reyzen. In 1923, Vayter?s Ksovim (Writings) were published with a comprehensive introduction by A. Y. Goldshmidt?the most important source on Vayter?s life and work. His three plays were published in separate editions. ? (Yivo Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe; A Vayter) Errata slip inserted. Subjects: Yiddish Drama. OCLC lists 10 copies. Light wear to boards, later endpages aged and chipped; otherwise very clean and fresh. Good + condition. (SPEC-36-55)

THE VOICE OF SPRING - Alma-Tadema.

Misschien was het het gedicht "The Voice of Spring' uit 1890 van schrijfster Mary Howitt, dat Alma-Tadema heeft doen inspireren dit werk te maken:Turn thine eyes to Earth and Godfor there the Spring has given;clothed the Earth, and cleared skies:for thy pleasure of thy food, pour thy soul in gratitude. Prijs: € 3.450,- (incl. lijst).

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

München, 12. XII. 1910. - 3½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.
