Five autograph letters signed in full to Tetrazzini's cook, Maria Manori

      - - 2 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated April 12, 1910. On stationery with the address "Two Hundred and Forty-Five West End Avenue" embossed at head. Tetrazzini bids Manori farewell until the latter returns to her service in November. She hopes to receive news from Manori while she is at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. "I am leaving you these few lines not to say 'farewell', but 'see you in November.' This letter will serve as a certificate of your honest, good, and wise service. I thank you for all the attention you have given me, and don't forget that in November I want you back in my service. Lina and Palmina send regards."- 4 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated [London, May 10, 1910.] On blue stationery with Tetrazzini's monogram and London address embossed at head. With original autograph envelope. As promised, Tetrazzini provides Manori with a lengthy account of her activities during a sea voyage, and in London. She mentions the death and national mourning of King Edward VII, during which time her theatre was closed. Next week, she will write her Milan lawyer about sending Manori's children to America. I am glad the chicks are well, the dear little animals, so innocent and pretty; let's hope they live. The American newspapers wrote what they wanted to, but it is not true that I was ill on the ship. On the contrary, I never had such a beautiful voyage, always well, happy, content. Mr. Bazelli is also very well and weighs 90 kilos; so you can see he feels great. In London we are in mourning for King Edward's death. We closed the theatre for 10 days and Friday I will re-open it, as everyone is expecting me." - 3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated London, July 4, 1910. On blue stationery with Tetrazzini's monogram and London address embossed at head. With original autograph envelope. Tetrazzini is sorry to hear about Manori's tribulations. She has charged her lawyer to help find Manori's missing children. She encloses 10 scudi, and send regards from Palmina, Adelina, and Mr. Bazelli. "Be courageous, good Maria, for God forsakes no one. I have already taken steps to find your two children in Florence and so as soon as I find out something I will immediately send it to America. I have charged my lawyer to look into it and hope to succeed in what I promised. I hope to find you good and slim and younger on my return. Thanks, too, for the news you gave me about my chicks."- 2 pp. on a postal card. Dated Ostand, August 7, 1911. With Manori's Lugano address (at the Villa Tetrazzini) notated to recto, and a photograph of the Palace Hotel and the name of photographer's studio ("De Graeve, Gand") to verso. While she is away, Tetrazzini wants Manori to oversee certain household chores at the Villa Tetrazzini. "I recommend that you be sure that the gardener waters the plants and that the workmen continue working at the villa with alacrity. I also hope the furniture people brought beds and some more furniture there. Take care of the dogs, birds, and everything. Say hello to Elisa and remain calm. We will be in Lugano on the 18th." - 1 page fragment. Octavo. N.d. ".Just leave it to me. Nothing new for now except that we are well, as I hope you and your family are. Regards from Palmina, from Adelina and from Mr. Bazelli. A kiss from me, your mistress."All in Italian (with translation). Some signs of wear and soiling; creased at folds; occasional minor defects. Italian soprano Luisa Tetrazzini made her debut in 1890, and sang in St. Petersburg, Madrid, Buenos Aires, and Mexico before causing a sensation as Violetta in 1907 at Covent Garden. In 1908, she triumphed at the Manhattan Opera House, and later appeared briefly at the Metropolitan Opera and in Chicago and Boston. She made numerous lucrative concert tours, appearing for the last time in New York in 1931, and in London in 1934."Tetrazzini possessed technical gifts of the highest order, and could dazzle audiences with the ease and agility of her chromatic scales, both ascending and des [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1910. 4to. 2 pp. To an unidentified recipient, refusing an essay and referencing Carl Jung, who was at the time editor of the "Jahrbuch für psychoanalytische und psychopathologische Forschungen": "Your various remarks make it easier for me to answer your question as to whether we can accept your patient's biography. I am not the editor, though you do assume correctly that Jung would take my request into account. As an editor I would have reservations about accepting the essay, as it consists only of autobiographical material without any analysis and we need the space more urgently for other things than collections of material. No matter how exact a self-account is, it is always something quite different from analysis, and cannot approach analysis even through an increase of details and sincerity" (transl.). - Left margin with punched holes (slightly touching letters), folds.

Autograph letter signed ("RScott"). Christchurch, New Zealand, 22. XI. 1910.

1910. 4to. 1 p. A "private note under the exceptional circumstances" of his dismissal of Thomas Feather, boatswain of the Terra Nova, written to Sir Richard Poore: "[...] Mr Feather has only one suit of uniform and for this and other reasons, he is anxious to get home at the earliest opportunity. As I said I am very desirous to meet his wishes in view of the heavy punishment of his dismissal [...] All our arrangements are going on well [...]". - Feather had occupied the same position on the Discovery expedition, and accompanied Scott on the Western Journey; Mount Feather in the Quartermain Mountains is named after him. Scott had then praised him as "a thorough seaman, [who] took that intense pride in his charge which was so well known in the old sailing days"; he reportedly discharged Feather from the Terra Nova as a result of friction between him and Lieutenant Henry Rennick. - Printed heading of British Antarctic Expedition, stamp and two annotations by recipient; edges slightly frayed, and somewhat wrinkled.

SPECIALLY DESIGNED HOMES Pacific System Homes Inc.

Pacific System Homes 1910 - SPECIALLY DESIGNED HOMES Pacific System Homes Inc., Los Angeles. RESERVED FOR OFFICE REFERENCE. A most unusual book (and likely unique) measuring 19 x 12" and consisting of numerous blueprint style pages printed on very heavy paper bound loose-leaf style with 3 metal bolts and showcasing the offering of the Pacific Ready-Cut Homes, Inc., in Los Angeles California. No date but likely 1920's. Condition is generally very good (except for the first and last pages which are but fair), but as this was a showroom copy meant to be thumbed through multiple times, there are occasional pencil notations on some pages, as well as three drawings (see pictures) by a skilled artist (Disney related, perhaps, while shopping--see article below?) on the rear of three pages. Also, some of the elevations have been colored by a skilled hand (see examples), sometimes adding landscaping details. Approx. 150+ pages with contents basically as follows: P1 -- Special Trim Details P2 --various ceiling types Pp 3,4,5 -- special Mantels P6,7 -- door designs p.8,9,10,11 -- China Cupboards, bookcases, cupboards, buffets Balance of book: Renderings of 55 different homes (from bungalows to two story models) available for sale, typically showing a frontal elevation on one page (sometimes additional pages showing alternate elevations) and a floor plan on the following page containing general dimensions, door, and window schedules, etc., stated generally at 1/4" equals one foot (but not always accurate). The Los Angeles times published the following article in July 2006 : ".Los Angeles-based Pacific Ready-Cut Homes Inc. -- once the biggest home builder in the West -- dominated the pre-cut market in Southern California during the company's pre-Depression peak. Eight decades later, many Pacific Ready-Cut houses still stand in neighborhoods as varied as Beverly Hills and South Los Angeles. From 1908 to 1940, Pacific Ready-Cut sold 37,000 ready-to-assemble homes based on 1,800 plans, plus some custom-designed ones, as practical California bungalows replaced fancy Victorians. Although most of the company's houses were one story, it also produced two-story homes, duplexes, bungalow court apartments, hotels, gas stations and offices. . The firm's heyday in the 1920s coincided with a spike in California's population and a booming economy that created a new generation of homeowners. At that time, the firm operated branch offices in 53 California cities, expanded nationally and also shipped kit houses to Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Guatemala and Japan. Locally, the homes cost anywhere from $200 to $25,000, which paid for everything -- the framing wood as well as the kitchen sink -- except assembly and, in most cases, the land. Models popular with the increasing number of working- and middle-class families settling in Southern California were the Spanish, English or Italian styles advertised at $636 to $2,817. The company put up a dozen model homes at South Hill Street near Pico Boulevard in 1922 and said 80,000 people toured them that year. The sales center showed off the quality of first-growth, high-altitude Douglas fir framing, built-ins and porcelain plumbing fixtures that were sold in categories rated "good, better and best." .In 1928, before they made it big, Walt Disney and his brother Roy bought Pacific Ready-Cut houses for lots they owned on Lyric Avenue within walking distance of their studio in Silver Lake. The houses are still there. LARGE AND HEAVY BOOK WILL REQUIRE EXTRA POSTAGE AND INSURANCE AT ACTUAL COST [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Ferri Moderni: Idee e Schizzi

35 lithographic plates reproducing ornamental wrought iron designs by the important Art Nouveau (stile Liberty) architect Silvio Gambini, primarily for outdoor elements including gates, fences, doors, lamps, and windows, in an organic, floral style characteristic of Art Nouveau, while incorporating more restrained and geometric patterns that would eventually become Italian Deco. Plates loose as issued, some lightly toned, title page with minor transfer stains from the orig. boards. 4to. Decorative boards portfolio with cloth ties, sunned, splitting and chipping at spine. Milan (Leonardo Preiss) ca. 1910-1913. Gambini was active in Milan from 1900 until his death in 1948.         BOOK OF BETTY BARBER

London: Duckworth and Co., [1910]. SCARCE First edition in book form, the story having appeared with black and white illustrations only in "Little Folks" magazine in 1900. With six plates in colour and 12 full-page black and white illustrations by Arthur Rackham, the colouring of the six plates done by Harry Rountree. 8vo, original light brown cloth lettered decoratively in dark brown on the upper cover and spine, the upper cover with a pastedown colourplate illustration by Rackham, rear board with publisher's logo, t.e.g. [xii], 130pp. An essentially fine copy of this scarce title in the Rackham oeuvre, fresher then any other available copy we know of, the paper with no spotting whatsoever and just a hint of the common toning to the prelims, the cloth fresh and clean with the pastedown in pristine condition. A VERY SCARCE ARTHUR RACKHAM ILLUSTRATED TITLE, RARE IN FINE CONDITION. It is also an unusual one. The work was originally published with Rackham's drawings in black and white in "Little Folks" in 1900. By 1910 Rackham was a busy artist in high demand having already produced some of his most famous works such as "Peter Pan". Rackham consented to allow another artist go back and colorize some of the magazine plates for this book edition, an extremely uncommon situation all around. The artist was Harry Rountree, who had been working with "Little Folks" since at least 1903. Rountree produced well-liked cartoons for the magazine Punch from 1905 to 1939, and also created advertising, posters and book illustrations for writers such as P. G. Wodehouse and Arthur Conan Doyle.

        THE NORTH POLE

Frederick A. Stokes, New York 1910 - Peary, Robert E. THE NORTH POLE. It¿s Discovery In 1909 Under The Auspices Of The Peary Arctic Club. New York, 1910, Frederick A. Stokes Company, First American Edition. (xxxii), 373 pp, six-panel colour fold-out map at end of book, eight colour plates from photographic enlargements coloured by hand, 100 B&W photographs throughout, three appendices, and an index following the text. Introduction by Theodore Roosevelt, who was on Peary's ship to wish him luck the day before he embarked on his final journey. Robert Edwin Peary (1856 ¿ 1920) was an American Polar explorer who claimed to have been the first person, on April 6, 1909, to reach the geographic North Pole. This claim subsequently attracted much criticism and controversy, and is today widely doubted. Narrative of Peary's last expedition, 1908-09, on the ship Roosevelt, describing the passage through the ice of Smith Sound-Robeson Channel, the wintering at Camp Jesup, Cape Sheridan, north of Ellesmere Island, and the march on the Pole. Peary's record was disputed by Dr. Frederick Cook, who claimed to have preceded him in 1908, but Cook's claim was disallowed, and many arctic scientists agreed that Peary was first to reach the Pole. It will probably never be definitively proven whether or not Peary made it. More than likely he got close and believed he did reach it. Gilt lettered spine and front board, embossed front cover with Arctic motif. Some marks and minimal wear to corners, original navy blue cloth. Top edge gilt. First Edition with "September 1910" on copyright page. Handsome copy. Split at front endpaper, now repaired. Decorative Boards bright, a little worn at edges and a few minor bumps, VG.
