1910 - STRAVINSKY, Igor. [Russian title in Cyrillic.] Moscow: P. Jurgenson, [1910]. Large quarto, original printed wrappers, glassine. Housed in a custom chemise and slipcase. $6500.First edition, piano score of Stravinsky's first ballet. The Firebird is the work which first earned Stravinsky a reputation beyond Russia's borders. The ballet draws on Russian folk-tales, bringing together the Romantic interest in the supernatural and in nationalist feeling. "Stravinsky worked on his music for a year, usually aided by Fokine, who had prepared the scenario. 'They worked very closely together, phrase by phrase,' wrote Lincoln Kirstein in his biography of Fokine". Stravinsky completed his score in May 1910, and on June 25 L'Oiseau de Feu (The Fire-Bird) was presented at the Paris Opéra with Fokine, Madame Fokina, and Karsavina as the principal dancers". On the opening night Debussy rushed backstage to embrace Stravinsky" (Cross, II: 779). The Firebird, in its Tchaikovskian and Rimskian lushness, stands in stark contrast to the spare, restrained works of Stravinsky's later, "neo-classical" period, and he was eventually to repudiate it. Yet he reworked it into an orchestral suite in several different versions, and continued to perform it throughout his career. The score for piano was published about the same time as the full score, "priority uncertain" (Fuld, 142); the plate numbers for the score for piano (39404-39419), however, precede the plate numbers for the full score (39420). De Lerma, O9. Small stamps of Parisian dealers on front wrapper and title page.Interior fine, with only light spotting to title page, text block expertly reinforced; only light wear to fragile wrappers. Near-fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Aqueduct and Subway Engineer and His Projects on the Catskill Aqueduct, the Hudson River Siphon and New York City Subway Construction 1910-1916.

1910-1916 1910 - Personal photograph album of Horatio Seymour, the great-great-great grandson of President John Adams and the great nephew of New York Governor Horatio Seymour (1810-1886). He was born in Michigan in 1883 and educated at Yale. The album is made up of 104 photographs he took of his engineering projects from 1910-1916. The first part of the album reflects his work as inspector for the Board of Water Supply for New York in the construction of the water supply for New York City known as the Catskill Aqueduct and the Hudson River Siphon. Work commenced in 1907 and completed in 1916. The Hudson River Siphon was a tunnel built below the Hudson River (at 1140 feet below sea level) at Breakneck Mountain to funnel Catskill water to the citizens of NYC. There are 26 photographs dating from 1910, 1911 & 1913 of East Shaft Compressor Plant, Hudson River Siphon, Aqueduct in Open Cut, West Portal - Breakneck Tunnel, Mixing Concrete for Shaft #10 Lining (with workers). Some photographs of fellow contractors and engineers are identified. Seymour was next employed as assistant engineer for the Public Service Commission, New York State in charge of subway construction from 1912-1915. The 27 photographs show the construction of Mosholu Parkway, Bedford Park Station, Jerome Avenue Elevated and the White Plains Avenue Elevated in Brooklyn. On one interesting page in the album, Seymour created a hierarchical chart of identified photographs of the engineers employed at the "Public Service Com. Engineers on Construction of Route #16, Sec. #2". The remaining photographs are of his family vacations of 1911, 1912, 1916 including fishing on several Canadian Lakes, and trips by ship to Kingston, Jamaica, and the Panama Canal. Album 11 x 7.25", black thick paper covers, 64 leaves with photographs (the rest blank), photographs are 5.5 x 3.3", glue mounted mostly two per page with handwritten captions. Cover is rubbed at edges/corners and spine head/foot shows wear with one small chip at upper spine corner. Very interesting. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Copper half-relief of Horatio Nelson

1910 - NELSON, Horatio. Copper half-relief bust portrait of Horatio Nelson. Society for Nautical Research, circa 1910. Copper half-relief measuring 11-1/2 by 16 inches; framed in birdseye maple, entire piece measures 14-1/2 by 18-1/2 inches. $25,000.Striking copper half-relief bust portrait of Horatio Nelson in military uniform, fashioned out of copper hull sheathing from the flagship where he fell, the H.M.S. Victory, captioned "Nelson" in the relief, handsomely framed in simple birdseye maple. This beautiful copper half-relief bust portrait of Horatio Nelson was fashioned out of the copper hull sheathing of the flagship where he fell in battle, the H.M.S. Victory. The solid, finely hammered and chased artwork shows tool marks and gilding under an even, well-aged patina, evidence of the quality of the craftsmanship. Following the battle of Trafalgar, the H.M.S. Victory was badly damaged and could not return to port under the power of its own sail. After delivering Nelson's body to London, the Victory was repaired and remained in active service until 1812, when she was moored at Portsmouth. The ship then served as a training vessel for some time. However, by the turn of the 20th century, she had deteriorated so badly that, in 1910, a group of enthusiasts established the Society for Nautical Research to help fund restoration of the ship. The essential parts of the project were not completed until well after the close of the Second World War. The very last repairs were not completed until 2005, just in time for the bicentennial of Trafalgar. Today, the Victory is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and attracts over 350,000 visitors per year as a museum ship. To help fund its restoration efforts, the Society for Nautical Research took unusable parts, such as nails and cooper sheathing, and melted them down to be refashioned as souvenirs. This handsome piece was among the most elaborate of these. From the military collection of Rodney Hilton Brown, founder of the War Museum, New York. Featured in an April 2015 article in The Mariner's Mirror, "Benjamin T. Hill's HMS Victory Collection," by Rodney Hilton Brown.Tiny repaired split at top of relief, virtually invisible, that occurred upon manufacture. Fine condition.

N.P.: n.p., 1910. half leather, cloth. 4to. half leather, cloth. unpaginated. A collection of engraved illustrations, most unidentified. Some are identified though and are the work of Stephen Sly, (British, fl. 1836-46), noted in Rodney Engen, Dictionary of Victorian Wood Engravers (Cambridge: Chadwyck-Healey, 1985), 239-40. Engen notes that Sly contributed to Charles Knight's Penny Magazine, Old England, and Old England Worthies.. He also illustrated some of the early issues of the Illustrated London News. Sly also engraved some of the illustrations in The Riches of Chaucer. See Charlotte C. Morse, "Popularizing Chaucer in the Nineteenth Century" in The Chaucer Review 38:2 (2003), 99-125. Also contains various calographic engravings near the rear of the book. Labelled "Proof Book" on spine. Was most likely used as a reference source for an etching company. Covers soiled, rubbed and scuffed at edges. Front inside hinge cracked. Previous owner's name on front free endpaper. Tissue protectors often bent or folded.

        Ernst Heilemann: Der Flirt (Originalzeichnung)

Adolf Münzer: „Ein self-made man“ (Originalzeichnung)

[Attributes: Signed Copy]
