REWARDS AND FAIRIES in the scarce dustwrapper

Doubleday , Page & Co., Garden City 1910 - xiv & 344 pages; Clean and tight in the publisher's green cloth binding in original dustjacket. This is the familiar Doubleday American trade binding design for titles written by the popular Rudyard Kipling, with bold lettering in gilt on the front cover and spine, and a pair of stylized images of a sailboat impressed in black -- large on the front cover and a smaller device on the spine. What is much less familiar is the presence of the rare dust jacket on this copy. This jacket consists of a thin, buff paper stock and has lettering and a pictorial device centered on the front panel printed in dark green. We share the disdain which experienced booksellers have for the use of the phrase "good for its age." This is a formula applied all too frequently by the ill-informed or lazy. In this case, the former can be forgiven to some extent, as dust jackets over one hundred years old are very rare, indeed. As luck would have it, this example is genuinely very good for any age, and deserves careful description. The front panel states the title and author, with a half-tone pictorial device at the panel's center (this is a smaller version of the final illustration, which faces p. 298 in the text). Under this pictorial device is a short description, making it clear that this volume represents the return of the popular "Puck of Pook's Hill" -- under this is the original price: "Illustrated, 1.50." The spine repeats the texts (minus the description of contents) and price from the front panel, with a smaller circular pictorial device, and with Doubleday, Page & Co.'s imprint at the foot. The front flap has a list of the 21 titles available in "The Pocket Kipling" -- ("Rich, red leather" binidings, 1.50 plus 7 cents postage, each). The rear flap has a notice of the 1910 special edition of Kipling's "Collected Poems" (with illustrations by W. Heath Robinson -- 3.50 - 10 in leather). The rear flap has ads for three "New Publications" from Doubleday, Page ["The Motor Maid" by C. N. and A. M. Williamson; "The Power and the Glory" by Grace MacGowan Cooke; and "Queen Sheba's Ring" by H. Rider Haggard]. This rare and entirely un-restored dust jacket is integral and clean, but has chipping with minor losses at the spine ends (especially at the top, where the shallow losses continue across the top edge of the front panel and top corner, but this very narrow band of loss never touches the double rules which frame the front panel); minor wear and a couple of closed tears continue at the other edges, with some minor rubbing at the hinges of the spine, particularly the rear hinge, which terminates at the bottom with a separation at the final inch and a half. The spine and the edges show minor toning. The volume itself is remarkable -- clean and crisp stamping in gilt and black, and original lustre to the ribbed cloth, and unworn tight corners and hinges. The endpapers are clean and unmarked and the hinges are tight and unworn. There is a tiny flake of white at the very bottom edge of the spine; and the original owner enclosed a newspaper clipping with the text of Kipling's poem "Tommy" which has browned, and left a small rectangle of toning to the second page of the "Contents" and the facing leaf listing the "Illustrations" -- pp. x & [xi} -- the clipping has been retained, but is now in an archival mylar sleeve. There are four full-page illustrations by Frank Craig -- (the same illustrations appear in the 1910 London edition from Macmillan). Kipling was awarded the first Nobel Prize issued to a writer of English literature in 1907. 'Rewards and Fairies' consists of a series of short stories set in historical times with a linking contemporary narrative. Dan and Una are two children, living in the Weald of Sussex in the area of Kipling's own home Bateman's. They have encountered Puck and he magically conjures up real and fictional individuals from Sussex's past to tell the children some aspect of its history and prehistory, though the episodes, in keeping [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Deirdre of the Sorrows. A Play.

New York: printed for John Quinn,, 1910. Octavo. Original cream cloth-backed paper boards, printed paper labels to spine and front cover. A fine copy. First edition, one of only five surviving copies printed on handmade paper. This edition consisted of 45 copies on paper, and five on vellum; however, Quinn was unhappy with the number of errors that crept in during the printing, and destroyed all but five copies on paper and five on vellum. Yeats helped to finish it, contributed the preface, and had it performed at the Abbey Theatre, which Yeats and Synge had founded together.

Le Fantôme de l'Opéra The Phanton of the Opera

A classic of gothic fiction and a cultural icon. First book edition. Uncut. Original unrestored wrappers, about a 1 inch split along bottom of front joint, tiny closed tear at bottom of front cover; internally clean w/ Brentano's label at rear. The front wrapper and spine have faded from greyish blue to grey. Withal, a very nice, barely touched copy and rare as such. ***Only one other copy in original wrappers sold at auction in many, many years. I've seen a couple of others matching the points of this copy floating around the nether realms of the web and an institution copy, but all of them were very worn or rebound. A very difficult title for which to find reliable information, but here is the best that I've been able to track down. If anyone has better information, by all means get in touch. *****First published as a serialisation in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910, this first book form appeared in bookstores on March 26, 1910 (Oxford Journal). No debate here. ****Even the printing process is a relative mystery. So while I use the term 'printing', issue may actually be the correct term. *****First printing meeting the following hallmarks: - *****The cover is greyish blue, with the phantom's eyes and part of his face colored red. Pierre Lafitte's monthly magazine announced the cover of the book as being by Adolphe Cossard and mentioned that it was "colorful".*****Copyright page mentions "Du même auteur, en préparation "Le fauteuil hanté" - not necessarily telling as this work was published in book form in 1911. *****Typo on page 400 "fatal rocher" instead of "fatal nocher" such as properly mentioned in "Le Gaulois" serial (1909). This error appears in later printings so again not necessarily a priority. *****A "fausse mention d'édition" on the list of author's works, a common French technique to boost sales: touting the book as already in "12 édition", 15 édition" or "30 édition". Ultimately this is the most crux worthy point of note. In the world of early 20th century French publishing, exaggeration was the exercise of the day - with the aim of whipping up customers anxious to not miss out on the next great thing. The lowest number I've seen is 12 edition, with later printings having larger numbers like 30 edition. While this salesmanship technique doesn't necessarily rely on the size of the number, it doesn't pass the logic test that the publisher would tout a huge print run quite so soon into the release. Therefore a smaller number is in keeping with a 'realistic' early run attempt to drum up sales. ******To sum up - there is no smoking gun bibliography to put this mystery to bed. However, I can say that this copy has just as strong a case to make for being one of the first printed. And to sweeten the pie, it's in superlative condition, color shift notwithstanding - - - the first print run probably didn't exceed a few thousand copies. Many were immediately bound, without the illustrated covers, as was customary at that time. Most of the few surviving copies in these fragile illustrated wrappers are generally in poor condition - to be mangled and tossed into the Seine.

        Die Fläche.

Vienna: Anton Schroll, c. 1903-1910. Two volumes in three small quarto portfolios. 192; 32pp. First volume loose and second volume accordionfold, as issued. Full run of Die Fläche, or The Surface, a periodical produced by members of the Wiener Werkstätte to showcase and disseminate the work created in the Workshops. The periodical is a "Musterbuch," or pattern book, and is composed entirely of reproductions of designs intended for practical application on all "surfaces," including poster art, books, wallpaper, textiles, stained glass, inlay, embroidery, monograms, business cards, and costume jewelry. The two volumes contain a total of 124 pages of designs, all printed in bright colors via algraphy, or aluminum plate lithography. The designs are by notables such as Gustav Klimt, Johanna Hollmann, Minka Podhajska, Max Benirschke, Moritz Jung, and more. Variously edited by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Alfred Roller, Bertold Löffler, and others, the two undated volumes were published to "manifest [the Viennese style] in its most austere and purified form." The Wiener Werkstätte was founded in 1903 by Hoffmann and Moser out of the Vienna Secession, which was a reaction against the conservative aesthetics of the Association of Austrian Artists at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Hoffmann and Moser were inspired by contemporary European design, such as the Glasgow School in Scotland and Art Nouveau in France. They also appreciated the emphasis on the applied arts found in the workshops of William Morris. They established the Wiener Werkstätte as a continuation of Morris' enterprise, and Die Fläche is a reflection of the skills taught and practiced in the Workshops. One of the most beautiful printed objects to come out of the Wiener Werkstätte, a complete series of this periodical is extremely rare to find. No complete copies have been sold at auction in twenty-five years. First portfolio bound in original cloth-backed paper-covered boards, which are rubbed at edges and waterstained on back cover; second volume portfolios rebound in modern cloth-backed boards, with original printed upper cover pasted on. Housed in two modern boxes. Bookplates. (Meggs' History of Graphic Design; Design, Vienna, 1890s-1930s plate 104).

Rare unsigned Cabinet photo by Ch. Bergamasco, (Grand Duke, 1860-1919, 6th son and youngest child of Tsar Alexander II and Maria Alexandrovna, General, executed in the Revolution)]

1910 - showing him head and shoulders in an oval, as a young man, 6½" x 4½", no place, no date but circa After the Bolsheviks seized power, he and his family faced a terrible ordeal. Their properties were confiscated, they lived under constant harassment, and in March 1918 his son Vladimir Paley was exiled to the Urals, where he was executed on 18 July 1918 in a mineshaft near Alapayevsk. In August 1918, he was arrested and taken to prison in St. Petersburg. His health, already bad, declined sharply, and his wife did all she could to have him released. Her efforts were useless: on 29 January 1919, Paul was moved to St. Peter and St. Paul Fortress, and in the first hours of the following day he was shot there, along with his cousins Grand Dukes Dimitry Konstantinovich, Nikolay Mikhailovich and Georgy Mikhailovich. They were buried in a mass grave in the Fortress, the Bolsheviks having refused the distraught Princess Paley the right to bury her husband. His body and those of his three cousins were found in 2011.

RARE British Antarctic Expedition Signed SLEDGING TABLES owned by Charles 'Silas' Wright scientist on Scott's Terra Nova Expedition 1910-13

Extremely rare association item... 1910 small quarto 170 x123 mm Contents page, 130pp of 18 printed tables (inc. correction of mean refraction depending upon reading of barometer, log sines of small arcs to each second, table for computing the reduction to the Meridian in seconds) and 20 pp blank for notes. One small photograph of tables for the sun's position in February 1912, in pocket at rear (possibly lacking two folding tables in pocket). Contemporary blue cloth with gilt title to front cover. Marks to front cover and edges a little worn. Binding fairly firm. The Sledging Tables were specially printed for the BAE reproducing relevant tables for making navigational calculations on sledging journeys. They were probably produced by a high street printer (as no publisher credited) in very small numbers for those expected to lead expeditions. This set includes a few notes on the tables presumably made by Wright; his stamped signature twice and, on the front paste down, the start of a letter from him 'Dear Mrs Armstrong' crossed out. The ffep has been torn out, and the name of collector Frank Morrison 1985 written on the contents page.

        African Game Trails.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1910. An account of the African wanderings of an American hunter-naturalist. 2 volumes, large octavo. Original brown half pigskin, pale grey-brown sides, untrimmed. With the dust jackets, card chemises and original slipcase. Photogravure portrait frontispiece, 47 photogravure plates (8 of them from drawings by the great wildlife artist Philip R. Goodwin, the rest "from photographs by Kermit Roosevelt and other members of the expedition"), all with captioned tissue guards; title pages printed in red & black. Contemporary presentation inscription on front free endpaper of volume I, light tan-burn from the corners to the endpapers, slipcase and chemises with splits now professionally restored, some staining and minor stripping from old tape repairs, however overall a remarkably well-preserved set of this handsome production. First and limited edition, number 129 of 500 copies signed by the author, printed on Ruisdael Paper by the De Vinne Press. Absenting himself from politics for a year, Roosevelt set off on an elaborate hunting trip to gather specimens for the Smithsonian. The huge party, including over 250 porters and guides, was partly underwritten by Scribner's who gave Roosevelt a $50,000 commission for a series of 12 articles on the safari which form the basis of this book. The party crossed British East Africa, into the Belgian Congo, and traced the Nile across the Sudan to Khartoum. "Lavishly illustrated, African Game Trails was irresistible to readers who could stomach the meticulous descriptions of bullets drilling hearts and brains. Even those who could not... had to concede that Roosevelt was scientific in his scrutiny of every aspect of the African wilderness, and often movingly lyrical. The density of recorded details, whether ornithological, paleontological, botanical, or anthropological, was almost overwhelming. Most came not from notes, but from the author's movie-camera memory, which in advance of any system yet available in nickelodeons, registered both sight and sound. Over and above its documentary appeal, the book exuded a kind of savage romance new to American readers" (Edmund Morris, Colonel Roosevelt, 2010). Sets in such collectable condition and with the surviving chemises and slipcase are most uncommon.

Signed drawing on hand cut slightly uneven 12 mo card stock, about 3 x 4, of Krazy Kat looking from left margin at Ignatz reading. Herriman signed diagonally across the center

Archivally framed and matted in thin dark mahogany toned wooden frame with French matting of a tone similar to cartoon. In 1910, Herriman launched "The Dingbat Family," later renamed "The Family Upstairs," for The New York Evening Journal, a Hearst paper. An interesting side note is that Herriman is credited with creating the word, "dingbat." The strip featured the adventures of an ordinary family dealing with their annoying upstairs neighbors. Herriman was the first to use the word "dingbat" to indicate a silly, empty-headed person. [see http://www.georgeherriman.com/biography.html] Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse began as space fillers for The Family Upstairs then expanded into their own comic strip. King Feature Syndicate owned by William Randolph Hearst supported Herriman's art throughout his career. Herriman's comics did not enjoy a mass following, but they were popular among an artistic and intellectual set [http://www.georgeherriman.com/biography.html].
