Chantecler. Pièce en quatre actes, en vers.

Paris, Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1910. - Large 8vo, pp. [xii], 244, [i], printed on green japon paper; the half-title - with a reproduction of a signed water-colour drawing by the author - here in two states: in colours on cream paper and in black on green paper; very minor browning to edges, but an excellent copy, entirely uncut and unopened in the publisher's soft green leather binding designed by Lalique, large blind impression of a cockerel on front cover signed by Lalique; minor wear to edges; in a folding cloth box.First edition, one of four copies printed on green paper, this copy printed specially for the publisher Eugène Fasquelle, and so designated on the verso of the half-title. The total edition numbered 1000 copies, with a few additional copies printed on yellow, blue, and green paper. 'Chantecler. is allegorical, symbolical, and satirical. The characters, the day-to-day creatures of farmyard and forest, are animated by the same sentiments of egotism, jealousy, and emulation as human beings. They are sometimes tender, frequently fickle, often ruthless. Chantecler the cock imagines that it is his beautiful song that makes the sun rise. His pride has a fall, but he masters his disillusionment and returns with a good heart to the more humble role of wakening his farmyard' (Oxford companion to French literature).         S.S. Olympic Stationary, 3 folded sheets, forming 6 leaves, with notes, in English with a few Hebrew words interspersed, by a scholar, relating to a book by Dr. Zunz, DIE SYNAGOGALE POESIE DES MITTELALTERS

[Undated] - SS Olympic stationary. The SS Olympic, also known as the RMS Olympic, which is the sister ships the SS Titanic and the SS Britannic. The Olympic was the only ship of the three to have a long life. Launched on October 20th, 1910, before its larger but ill fated sister ship, the SS Titanic, the SS Olympic was ready for duty on 31 May 1911, the same day the SS Titanic was launched. The maiden trip for the Olympic was to New York where she arrived in a record speed of 5 days,16 hours and 42 minutes. The fifth journey across the Atlantic was not successful in that she collided with the HMS Hawke, causing considerable damage to both ships. In her repairs a Titanic's propeller shaft was used to repair the Olympic. When the Titanic was on her way to New York and hit the iceberg the Olympic was 500 miles away heading back to England. She was not able to get to the Titanic's help in time. During WWI the Olympic was used as a troop ship and had many adventures including the ramming and sinking of U-203, a German submarine. Following the war while in dry dock they discovered a dent below her hull's waterline, caused by a torpedo that had failed to detonate. After the war she was returned to service and by 1935 she was sold for scrap. Many of the ships beautiful fittings were sold and are displayed as sample displays of the Titanic's interior. This piece of stationary survived those glorious days of service to the White Star Lines. The Olympic was the first of her class of ocean liners built for the White Star Line. The captain of the Olympic at the time of the collision with the HMS Hawke was Edward Smith, who famously died at the helm of the Titanic less than a year later.

The distribution of Nister titles was not limited to European markets; the New York firm of E.P. Dutton worked in conjunction with Nister to promote and sell the publisher's titles in the United States. Nister has recently received considerable interest from academics and collectors alike, for which see University of Virginia's "Pop Goes the Page" (online) and University of North Texas "Pop-Up and Movable Books: A Tour through their History, Ernest Nister" (online). Exemplar Nr.1"). - Mit Gedichten von Hermann Hesse, Hugo von Hoffmannsthal, Else Lasker-Schüler, Detlev von Liliencron, Oskar Loerke, Christian Morgenstern, Friedrich Nietzsche, Stefan Zweig, Richard Dehmel, Max Dauthendey, Franz Evers, Caesar Flaischlen, Franz Karl Ginzkey, Otto Erich Hartleben, Thassilo von Scheffer, Emil Prinz von Schönaich-Carolath, Rudolf Alexander Schröder, Wilhelm von Scholz, Lulu von Strauß und Torney, Frank Wedekind, Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen, Agnes Miegel, John Henry Mackay, Hugo Salus, Richard Schaukal. - "Warum handgebunden?

Autograph Letter Signed to Louise Swinnerton, 2pp on one 8vo sheet, penned on first and last pages, n.p.,n.p., with transmittal envelope, signed in return address, postmarked, Los Angeles, June 10, 1938

Herriman refers to himself as "Ole Man Herriman," noting he, "is getting better - No,! I did not do all that work while I was laid away - its [sic] old stuff they picked out of the morgue and used over again - my junk is so much the same - y'could use it backwards or forwards...nobody would know the difference - that's how come I fooled 'em for ten weeks - you should have known better - aint ya a news paper gal?...." He comments on not understanding why Louise gives, "a mug like me so much time - writing long letters...I'm just an excuse - so you can unload about those mesas and sunsets out in that ole pais pintado...a taste of that stuff - sinks you...shux I was more than 1/2 mad at the Doctors for holding me over...if your mind can stand it - try and imagine a kinky headed runt - and four scotty dogs raising hell in a pool of purple shadow..-.. Would that make the Navajos sing Coyote...." He signs, "Ole Man Herriman," and adds two post scripts initialed, "the first initialed "G. H." In his first PS he writes that this is the "longest letter" he'd ever written and in the second, he writes, "I hate initials," and signed with simply, "G." After Herriman's wife died, he began a relationship with Louise Scher Swinnerton, formerly married to fellow cartoonist and friend Jimmy Swinnerton. Many of the letters between Herriman and Swinnerton were burned by Swinnerton's grandson according to Herriman's biographer. [see http://www.tcj.com/a-konversation-with-george-herrimans-biographer-michael-tisserand-part-two] Herriman's reference to "Pais pintado" likely reflects his love for Monument Valley and the Enchanted Mesa in the southwestern U.S.In 1910, Herriman launched "The Dingbat Family," later renamed "The Family Upstairs," for The New York Evening Journal, a Hearst paper. An interesting side note is that Herriman is credited with creating the word, "dingbat." The strip featured the adventures of an ordinary family dealing with their annoying upstairs neighbors. Herriman was the first to use the word "dingbat" to indicate a silly, empty-headed person. [see http://www.georgeherriman.com/biography.html] Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse began as space fillers for The Family Upstairs then expanded into their own comic strip. King Feature Syndicate owned by William Randolph Hearst supported Herriman's art throughout his career. Herriman's comics did not enjoy a mass following, but they were popular among an artistic and intellectual set [http://www.georgeherriman.com/biography.html] . At the time Herriman wrote this letter, Krazy Kat had dropped in popularity running in only 35 newspapers.

Mythology can refer to the collected myths of a group of people?their collection of stories they tell to explain nature, history, and customs or to the study of such myths. As a collection of explanatory stories, mythology is a vital feature of every culture. Many sources for myths have been proposed, ranging from personification of nature or personification of natural phenomena, to truthful or hyperbolic accounts of historical events to explanations of existing rituals. Although the term is complicated by its implicit condescension, mythologizing is not just an ancient or primitive practice, as shown by contemporary mythopoeia such as urban legends and the expansive fictional mythoi created by fantasy novels and comics. A culture's collective mythology helps convey belonging, shared and religious experiences, behavioral models, and moral and practical lessons. The study of myth dates back to ancient history. Rival classes of the Greek myths by Euhemerus, Plato, and Sallustius were developed by the Neoplatonists, and later revived by Renaissance mythographers. The nineteenth-century comparative mythology reinterpreted myth as a primitive and failed counterpart of science (E. B. Tylor), a "disease of language" (Max Müller), or a misinterpretation of magical ritual (James Frazer). Recent approaches have rejected conflict between the value of myth and rational thought, often viewing myths as expressions to understand general psychological, cultural, or societal truths, rather than as inaccurate historical accounts. In modern society, myth is often regarded as historical or obsolete. Many scholars in the field of cultural studies are now beginning to research the idea that myth has worked itself into modern discourses. Modern formats of communication allow for widespread communication across the globe, thus enabling mythological discourse and exchange among greater audiences than ever before. Various elements of myth can now be found in television, cinema, and video games. (Wikipedia).
