        Copper half-relief of Horatio Nelson

1910. NELSON, Horatio. Copper half-relief bust portrait of Horatio Nelson. Society for Nautical Research, circa 1910. Copper half-relief measuring 11-1/2 by 16 inches; framed in birdseye maple, entire piece measures 14-1/2 by 18-1/2 inches. $25,000.Striking copper half-relief bust portrait of Horatio Nelson in military uniform, fashioned out of copper hull sheathing from the flagship where he fell, the H.M.S. Victory, captioned ""Nelson"" in the relief, handsomely framed in simple birdseye maple. This beautiful copper half-relief bust portrait of Horatio Nelson was fashioned out of the copper hull sheathing of the flagship where he fell in battle, the H.M.S. Victory. The solid, finely hammered and chased artwork shows tool marks and gilding under an even, well-aged patina, evidence of the quality of the craftsmanship. Following the battle of Trafalgar, the H.M.S. Victory was badly damaged and could not return to port under the power of its own sail. After delivering Nelson's body to London, the Victory was repaired and remained in active service until 1812, when she was moored at Portsmouth. The ship then served as a training vessel for some time. However, by the turn of the 20th century, she had deteriorated so badly that, in 1910, a group of enthusiasts established the Society for Nautical Research to help fund restoration of the ship. The essential parts of the project were not completed until well after the close of the Second World War. The very last repairs were not completed until 2005, just in time for the bicentennial of Trafalgar. Today, the Victory is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and attracts over 350,000 visitors per year as a museum ship. To help fund its restoration efforts, the Society for Nautical Research took unusable parts, such as nails and cooper sheathing, and melted them down to be refashioned as souvenirs. This handsome piece was among the most elaborate of these. From the military collection of Rodney Hilton Brown, founder of the War Museum, New York. Featured in an April 2015 article in The Mariner's Mirror, ""Benjamin T. Hill's HMS Victory Collection,"" by Rodney Hilton Brown.Tiny repaired split at top of relief, virtually invisible, that occurred upon manufacture. Fine condition.

Oak Pipe Rack Carved from H.M.S. Victory Timbers

1910. (NELSON, Horatio). Oak Pipe Rack Carved from H.M.S. Victory Timbers. No place: circa 1910. Oak pipe rack, fashioned into the shape of an anchor with brass rings at the ends, designed to accommodate four pipes, 8 inches tall on a 7 by 3-inch base, with carved identification at bottom center: ""H.M.S. VICTORY"" $6500.Rare pipe rack carved from timbers of Admiral Nelson's flagship, H.M.S. Victory, to help fund restoration efforts to preserve the historic vessel early in the 20th century. The Battle of Trafalgar was a spectacular success for the British navy over the combined fleets of the French and Spanish navies, but the victory was tainted by the death of Admiral Lord Nelson, shot during the engagement by a French musketeer. Nelson's flagship H.M.S. Victory had been badly damaged in the fight and was towed to Gibraltar by HMS Neptune for repairs, before carrying Nelson's body to England where, after lying in state at Greenwich, he was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral on January 9, 1806. In 1910, the Society for Nautical Research was created to try and preserve the Victory for future generations, but the Admiralty was unable to help, having become embroiled in an escalating arms race; thus by the time Frank H. Mason published The Book of British Ships in 1911, Victory's condition was described as ""nothing short of an insult."" By 1921, she was in a very poor state, and the ""Save the Victory"" campaign was started, with shipping magnate Sir James Caird becoming a major contributor. (Restoration was finally completed well after the close of the Second World War; today, it is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and attracts over 350,000 visitors annually as a museum ship.) This pipe rack is from a generations-old British military and naval family collection; featured in an April 2015 article in The Mariner's Mirror, ""Benjamin T. Hill's HMS Victory Collection,"" by Rodney Hilton Brown.Typical age-wear with some minor oxidation to metal rings. An exceptional commemorative piece.

        Marcus Aurelius to Himself

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1910. The Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Handsomely Bound ca. 1910 by Ramage of London [RAMAGE, binders]. Marcus Aurelius to Himself. In English by Gerald H. Rendall… Head Master of Charterhouse. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1910. Golden Treasury Series. Small octavo (5 7/8 x 3 7/8 inches; 150 x 98 mm.). xlii, 167, [1, imprint] pp. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Some light foxing affecting front and rear blank leaves only. Handsomely bound by Ramage of London ca. 1910 (Stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in). Full brown morocco, covers with double-gilt rules surrounding four large and elaborate gilt corner designs, spine with five raised bands, elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and wide turn-ins, blue mottled paper liners and endleaves, all edges gilt. A fine example of the work of this exceptional London binder. Born in London in 1836, John Ramage served an apprenticeship with John Wright, then went to Paris, where he was able to work with the distinguished Marcellin Lortic (1822-1892), who opened his shop on the Rue St. Honoré in 1840. In 1860 Ramage purchased the binding business of Alexander Banks, Jr., in Edinburgh, then returned three years later to London, where he was in business at various locations into the 20th century. Though the range designs is broad, Ramage bindings are celebrated for their remarkably delicate, careful, and elaborate gilt work. Marcus Aurelius. Latin: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus; [26 April 121 - 17 March 180 AD) was Roman Emperor from 161 to 180. He ruled with Lucius Verus as co-emperor from 161 until Verus' death in 169. Marcus Aurelius was the last of the so-called Five Good Emperors. He was a practitioner of Stoicism, and his untitled writing, commonly known as the Meditations, is the most significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. During his reign, the Empire defeated a revitalized Parthian Empire in the East: Aurelius' general Avidius Cassius sacked the capital Ctesiphon in 164. In central Europe, Aurelius fought the Marcomanni, Quadi, & Sarmatians with success during the Marcomannic Wars, although the threat of the Germanic tribes began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. A revolt in the East led by Avidius Cassius failed to gain momentum and was suppressed immediately. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, written in Greek while on campaign between 170 and 180, are still revered as a literary monument to a philosophy of service and duty, describing how to find and preserve equanimity in the midst of conflict by following nature as a source of guidance and inspiration.

1910. Signed. CHURCHILL, Winston. Printed document signed. London: July 11, 1910. Black-bordered printed document, one page, 8 by 12-1/2 inches. Framed with portrait of Churchill, entire piece measures 20 by 20 inches. $4500.Printed document, a 1910 letter of appreciation signed by Churchill, sent on behalf of King George V to Welsh Nonconformists for their resolution on the death of King Edward VII.The document, finished in hand and signed by Churchill as Secretary of State for the Home Office, July 11, 1910 and sent to R. Davies, Esq., Tuhwntirbwlch, Portmadoc [Wales], reads in full, “I am commanded by The King to convey to you hereby His MajestyÂ’s Thanks for the Loyal and Dutiful Resolution of the nonconformists of Portmadoc on the occasion of the lamented death of His late Majesty King Edward the Seventh. I am to say that the expression of sympathy with Queen Alexandra has been laid before Her Majesty, who desires me to communicate to you Her Thanks.” On May 6, 1910, after a reign of less than 10 years, King Edward VII died and was succeeded by his son as King George V. The Nonconformists of Portmadoc who had sent this resolution were Christians who refused to conform to the Church of England. Under magnification, there appears to be some black shading under ChurchillÂ’s brown ink signature; this may have been caused by splaying of the ink or, when Churchill signed this letter, the ink was very light and he signed his name a second time, going over his first signature. Three horizontal folds, none through ChurchillÂ’s signature. Handsomely framed and in fine condition.

        Edison. His Life and Inventions

1910. First Edition . Signed. (EDISON, Thomas Alva) DYER, Frank Lewis and MARTIN, Thomas Commerford. Edison. His Life and Inventions. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1910. Two volumes. Octavo, original gilt-stamped blue cloth, top edges gilt, original glassine (Volume II only). Housed together in a custom clamshell box. $8800.First edition of the first ""complete, authentic and authorized"" biography of Edison, boldly signed by him, inscribed by the author to one of the founders of Biograph Studios, one of the most important early movie studios: ""To my friend H.N. Marvin with compliments. Frank L. Dyer. Orange, N.J. June 15, 1911.""Primarily authored by Frank Lewis Dyer, who headed Edison's legal and corporate affairs for over a decade, with Electrical World editor Thomas Martin, this two-volume, generously illustrated work was ""long regarded as the standard, authorized biography… [and] is a rich source of biographical details, particularly on Edison's early career"" (Burt, The Biography Book, 125). Subsequent biographers would inevitably ""begin with a large debt to the authorized biography written in 1910 (and enlarged in1929)… Filled with good stories and extensive quotations from Edison himself, it tells Edison's life largely thorough his most well-known inventions… Dyer and Martin provide a good technical discussion of these inventions and furnish insight into Edison's inventive and business methods"" (Hessenbuch, 192). Additionally, as contemporary reviewers noted, Edison ""throws light on important phases of the economic history of our time… Edison has been almost through the whole of his career an organizer, manager, investor"" (Taussig, Quarterly Journal of Economics). With Edison's stamped signature on publisher's statement of authorization, Volume I. Illustrated with 26 full-page photogravures, including two frontispiece portraits. Volume II with a lengthy appendix detailing Edison's United States patents granted from 1868-1909 and his more than 1000 foreign patents, as well as informative diagrams and descriptions of his work on the telephone, incandescent lamp, phonograph, motion picture inventions and more. Without rare dust jackets or rare publisher's cardboard slipcase; with rare printed glassine for Volume II only. This copy is inscribed to Henry Norton Marvin, one of the founders of Biograph Studios, one of the early pioneers of the film industry. Marvin began working with W.K.L. Dickson—a former employee of Edison's—in the 1890s, founding a company that would go on to become The Biograph Company. At its height, director D.W. Griffith was making a steady stream of films for Biograph starring the likes of Mary Pickford, Lionel Barrymore, Lillian and Dorothy Gish and Mack Sennett (who would also direct for the company). Starting in 1908 Biograph became part of the Motion Picture Patents Company, an Edison-led consortium of studios that was finally dissolved in 1915 due to antitrust violations. At the time of this inscription, Marvin was vice-president and general manager of the company.Interiors generally fine, cloth of Volume I rubbed, gilt bright. An extremely good copy with a excellent film association.

London: Stanley Paul & Co.. London, Stanley Paul & Co., 1910. First Edition. First Impression. A wonderful association copy, presented by the author to her first son, Paul Bland. The inscription reads thus: "To Paul Bland, to \ whom this book \ was dedicated and \ is dedicated, this \ copy on his birthday, \ from E. Nesbit, his \ mother, who wrote \ the book \ June 28, 1910." Nesbit had a unfortunate marriage to Hubert Bland, though three children were borne of it. Paul (1880-1940) was the first. This would've been for his 30th birthday; he committed suicide another thirty years later, after a depression, thought in part to come from the fractured homelife and his father. Nesbit's most famous work, The Railway Children, was dedicated to Paul. The book itself is in decent shape with a tear to the cloth at the head of the spine and pulling all along, until separating a little at the bottom, the spine tips are bumped and rubbed. Internally, very good with a few signs of ageing and some spots of foxing. Overall a presentable copy with a wonderful and important association. The book itself is a collection of weird tales, with a good dose of the supernatural. [5694, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1910.

Deirdre of the Sorrows. A Play.

New York: printed for John Quinn,, 1910. Octavo. Original cream cloth-backed paper boards, printed paper labels to spine and front cover. A fine copy. First edition, one of only five surviving copies printed on handmade paper. This edition consisted of 45 copies on paper, and five on vellum; however, Quinn was unhappy with the number of errors that crept in during the printing, and destroyed all but five copies on paper and five on vellum. The play had been left unfinished at Synge's death in 1909; W. B. Yeats helped to finish it, contributed the preface, and had it performed at the Abbey Theatre, which Yeats and Synge had founded together.

Le Fantôme de l'Opéra The Phanton of the Opera

A classic of gothic fiction and a cultural icon. First book edition. Uncut. Original unrestored wrappers, about a 1 inch split along bottom of front joint, tiny closed tear at bottom of front cover; internally clean w/ Brentano's label at rear. The front wrapper and spine have faded from greyish blue to grey. Withal, a very nice, barely touched copy and rare as such. ***Only one other copy in original wrappers sold at auction in many, many years. I've seen a couple of others matching the points of this copy floating around the nether realms of the web and an institution copy, but all of them were very worn or rebound. A very difficult title for which to find reliable information, but here is the best that I've been able to track down. If anyone has better information, by all means get in touch. *****First published as a serialisation in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910, this first book form appeared in bookstores on March 26, 1910 (Oxford Journal). No debate here. ****Even the printing process is a relative mystery. So while I use the term 'printing', issue may actually be the correct term. *****First printing meeting the following hallmarks: - *****The cover is greyish blue, with the phantom's eyes and part of his face colored red. Pierre Lafitte's monthly magazine announced the cover of the book as being by Adolphe Cossard and mentioned that it was "colorful".*****Copyright page mentions "Du même auteur, en préparation "Le fauteuil hanté" - not necessarily telling as this work was published in book form in 1911. *****Typo on page 400 "fatal rocher" instead of "fatal nocher" such as properly mentioned in "Le Gaulois" serial (1909). This error appears in later printings so again not necessarily a priority. *****A "fausse mention d'édition" on the list of author's works, a common French technique to boost sales: touting the book as already in "12 édition", 15 édition" or "30 édition". Ultimately this is the most crux worthy point of note. In the world of early 20th century French publishing, exaggeration was the exercise of the day - with the aim of whipping up customers anxious to not miss out on the next great thing. The lowest number I've seen is 12 edition, with later printings having larger numbers like 30 edition. While this salesmanship technique doesn't necessarily rely on the size of the number, it doesn't pass the logic test that the publisher would tout a huge print run quite so soon into the release. Therefore a smaller number is in keeping with a 'realistic' early run attempt to drum up sales. ******To sum up - there is no smoking gun bibliography to put this mystery to bed. However, I can say that this copy has just as strong a case to make for being one of the first printed. And to sweeten the pie, it's in superlative condition, color shift notwithstanding - - - the first print run probably didn't exceed a few thousand copies. Many were immediately bound, without the illustrated covers, as was customary at that time. Most of the few surviving copies in these fragile illustrated wrappers are generally in poor condition - to be mangled and tossed into the Seine.

        Die Fläche.

Vienna: Anton Schroll, c. 1903-1910. Two volumes in three small quarto portfolios. 192; 32pp. First volume loose and second volume accordionfold, as issued. Full run of Die Fläche, or The Surface, a periodical produced by members of the Wiener Werkstätte to showcase and disseminate the work created in the Workshops. The periodical is a "Musterbuch," or pattern book, and is composed entirely of reproductions of designs intended for practical application on all "surfaces," including poster art, books, wallpaper, textiles, stained glass, inlay, embroidery, monograms, business cards, and costume jewelry. The two volumes contain a total of 124 pages of designs, all printed in bright colors via algraphy, or aluminum plate lithography. The designs are by notables such as Gustav Klimt, Johanna Hollmann, Minka Podhajska, Max Benirschke, Moritz Jung, and more. Variously edited by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Alfred Roller, Bertold Löffler, and others, the two undated volumes were published to "manifest [the Viennese style] in its most austere and purified form." The Wiener Werkstätte was founded in 1903 by Hoffmann and Moser out of the Vienna Secession, which was a reaction against the conservative aesthetics of the Association of Austrian Artists at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Hoffmann and Moser were inspired by contemporary European design, such as the Glasgow School in Scotland and Art Nouveau in France. They also appreciated the emphasis on the applied arts found in the workshops of William Morris. They established the Wiener Werkstätte as a continuation of Morris' enterprise, and Die Fläche is a reflection of the skills taught and practiced in the Workshops. One of the most beautiful printed objects to come out of the Wiener Werkstätte, a complete series of this periodical is extremely rare to find. No complete copies have been sold at auction in twenty-five years. First portfolio bound in original cloth-backed paper-covered boards, which are rubbed at edges and waterstained on back cover; second volume portfolios rebound in modern cloth-backed boards, with original printed upper cover pasted on. Housed in two modern boxes. Bookplates. (Meggs' History of Graphic Design; Design, Vienna, 1890s-1930s plate 104).
