MARKHAM, [Sir] Clements (1830-1916).
London: John Murray, 1909. FIRST EDITION, association copy. Octavo, pp.xx, 370 [2]. With 21 photographic plates including a frontispiece portrait of the subject, and seven maps. INSCRIBED by Richard Cyriax, author of an account of Sir John Franklin's last Arctic expedition (1939), to his grandson Peter Cyriax, who was himself a descendant of Admiral Sir Francis Leopold McClintock on his mother's side. In black ink to front free endpaper, dated 1967. In publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board. Also with rare original pink dust-jacket with titles to spine and front cover.Light spotting to prelims and edges. Jacket spine sunned, with some large chips from the base of the spine and the front cover, one affecting titles. Very good indeed, with the rare jacket and a fine association. Admiral Sir Francis Leopold McClintock (1819-1907) was one of the fore-most Arctic explorers of the nineteenth century, being involved in both the discovery of the lost Franklin expedition (1845), and the development of human-hauled sleds. Markham served under McClintock as a Midshipman during one of the missions to locate the Franklin expedition, and was later highly influential in British polar exploration, taking a keen interest in the careers of Shackleton and Scott as President of the Royal Geographic Society and organiser of the 1901-04 Antarctic Expedition.

WODEHOUSE, P. G.
London: Alston Rivers, Limited, 1909. London: Alston Rivers, Limited,, 1909. Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers, black and white on a red ground, titles to backstrip in black. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Illustrated by C. Harrison. Small ownership signature to front free endpaper, spine very lightly cocked, wrappers a little tanned, slightly rubbed and very lightly creased and chipped at corners, neat closed split at the base of the backstrip where it meets the front wrapper. These minor faults notwithstanding a truly exceptional copy of a fragile little publication designed to be sold cheaply to commuters. First edition, first impression. McIlvaine couples this with the notoriously difficult The Globe by the Way Book as being "among the rarest Wodehousiana". Exceptionally scarce in this condition. McIlvaine A11a.

Einstein, Albert
1909. Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph scientific notes on statistical physics and electrostatics. 2 leaves. [Bern or Zurich, after May 1909.] 289 x 264 mm.; 216 x 178 mm. Written in ink on the blank verso of two fragments of what may be proof sheets for a printed doctorate diploma for Walther Eberhard Boës, who obtained his doctorate from the University of Zurich in May 1909. Larger leaf slightly browned, with some tears along folds and margins mended with clear tape, but very good. From the library of historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2008). These notes, on statistical physics and electrostatics, exemplify Einstein's occasional use of stray scraps of paper for his work. In the present case, he used what appear to be proofs of the doctorate diploma for Walther Eberhard Boës who obtained his doctorate for a thesis on "Nitro- und Nitritoverbindungen der Metallammoniake, insbesondere der Kobaltiake" under the supervision of Einstein's colleague Alfred Werner. The proofs bear a date of May 1909, which provides an earliest limit for the dating of these notes. In the spring of 1909, when Boës obtained his degree in Zurich, Einstein was still a clerk in the patent office in Bern, but at the beginning of May he was appointed Extraordinary (associate) professor of theoretical physics at the University of Zurich, a position he took up the following October. The first page of these notes, with section heading "Anwendung von Wahrscheinlichkeitsbetr[achtung] auf Bewegungsvorgänge" [Application of Probabilistic Analysis of Processes of Motion], was published in Einstein's … [Click Below for Full Description]

VERNE, Jules (1828-1905).
London: Grant Richards. 1909. [Science fiction] FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm) pp.vii; 292. Illustrated with twenty-four full page plates. Navy blue cloth with white titles to spine and colour blocking to the front cover. Presentation plate from the Oldham P. S. A. Society. Some occasional spotting, front hinge just beginning to split, binding bright but for a little rubbing and wear. Overall a most attractive copy in the publisher's polychrome binding, depicting, yes, a Golden Meteor; a rather lavish book production, just before the dust-jacket really took off and thus consigned pictorial cloth to history. Literature; Edward and Judith Myers- Jules Verne; A Bibliography (1989).
