LOUYS, PIERRE
Paris: A. - F. Ferroud, 1909. [13], VIII, 281, [3] pagine. 27x21 cm.Rilegatura moderna in piena pelle a cinque nervi, con fregi e titoli in oro al dorso. Un'illustrazione incastonata su ciascuno dei piatti. Interno ottimo.

JAMES, William.
New York: Longmans, Green, and Co, 1909 - Octavo. Original green cloth-backed green paper boards, titles lettered in black to printed paper label to spine, top edge gilt. Small ink mark to rear pastedown. Spine gently rolled, slight browning to paper label, minor wear to very tips; an excellent copy. First edition, first printing, of James's detailed reply to the academic response to the theory of truth that he propounded for a lay audience in his 1907 work Pragmatism. This work is a collection of 15 essays, nine of which he had written before he wrote Pragmatism, and a further six in response to the criticisms raised by Bertrand Russell and others. "In the Meaning of Truth, absolute truth is characterized by James as membership in an 'ideal set' of 'forumlations' on which there will be 'ultimate consensus'" (Putnam). With the ownership inscription of James H. Robinson to the front free endpaper, "James H. Robinson, Dec. 25, 1909", believed to be American historian and author of The Mind in the Making, James Harvey Robinson (1863–1936). While at Harvard Robinson "came under the influence of William James, who developed his interest in pragmatic philosophy and psychology" (ANB). Rath, Heine (1873 Berlin - Stuttgart 1920)
VAKA, Demetra.
Boston and New York, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1909. 8vo. Original decorative maroon cloth, lettered in gilt; pp. [x], 274, [4]; very light rubbing to extremities, gutter along final advertisement leaf and opposite fly-leaf discoloured due to binder's glue, otherwise a very good copy. First edition; the British edition left out the word of the title Haremlik. Greek-born (1877) Demetra Vaka married the American novelist Kenneth Brown and wrote a number of books between 1911 and 1923, both fiction and non-fiction, dealing mainly with Islam and life in the Turkish empire. She died in 1946. The present book tells of her return to Constantinople and visits to her childhood friends, now grown up, and other women who live in a harem. The resulting somewhat fictionalised account contains discussions of the city and of social issues relating to women.

Willmott, E. A. (Ellen Ann), 1858-1934
London: Bernard Quaritch, 1909. Hard Cover. [1], 40 plates, illus., front.; 42 cm. Miss Ellen Willmott, born in 1858, was independently wealthy; gardening became her passion. She bought Warley Place and when she finished re-modeling the gardens, she bought a château in France and a villa on the Italian Riviera. She filled those gardens, too. Miss Willmott died in 1934. Her home on Warley Place was demolished; her gardens became rampant with weeds. No money, or gardeners, or family remained after she was gone. She was a photographer-- all of the 40 very fine photos in this book are hers. She was also a book collector, which may be reflected in Quaritch being the publisher. Good+, wear at corners, images excellent / no dj. stock#LdeP021.
