Holmboe, [Frithjof]
Bismarck-Mandan, N. D.: Holmboe. Very Good. Photograph. B&W photograph on tan mount taken between 1909-1921, and in very good condition. Photograph measures 6 ½" x 8 ¾" without mount, 10" x 12" with mount. Image depicts the launching of the boat "Gros Ventre" on a waterway with two men in the rear of the boat. On verso of mount previous owner has written in ink "some more rubbish for Marion Piper from Julia Leach." Photograph has light silvering and very light wear to edges; mount has light soiling and moderate dampstaining, not affecting photo. Frithjof Holmboe, the photographer of this image, was a Norwegian immigrant who set up a photography shop in downtown Bismarck in 1909. He began making films in 1913 for the state Department of Immigration. He left North Dakota for California in 1921, which provides us with a timeframe for this photograph. The Gros Venture, a gasoline powered motor vessel, was built in Chamberlain, S. D. In 1903 and was owned by the Benton Packet Company out of Bismarck, N. D. Towns thrived and grew on river commerce and vessels such as this one would have been important to a community's success. After the advent of railways however, the river navigation business began to falter. The Benton Packet Company's last riverboat ran in 1926. (State Historical Society of North Dakota). .

LAWRENCE T.E.
1909. 1 page, with 3 leaves of notes. No place, ?Monday?, probably A rare very early letter with interesting enclosures, written while an undergraduate at Jesus College, Oxford, addressed to Mrs. Lane Poole, the wife of his tutor, Reginald Lane Poole: ?The enclosed are all that I can find, of glass-portraits in the College. I should think they date from about 1440?1450. When they were in the old library they must have looked very beautiful. Of course the faces are quite conventional.? The list of stained glass portraits is made with Lawrence?s characteristic care: his enthusiasm for brass rubbing and churches is well known.Manuscript material from before the war is virtually unobtainable.

Thoreau Henry David
Boston: The Bibliophile Society, 1909. 2 volumes. First edition of the complete work and one of only 461 copies on Holland paper. The first truly complete edition of the whole of the WALDEN text. A copy with pleasing provenance, having belonged to Dr. Roderick Terry, author, artist and highly accomplished collector. His fine library was sold by Anderson Galleries in the late 1930's. With the title-pages to Volumes I and II in multiple states, one engraved and one etched, one designed, and with thirteen other illustrations from photos, and etchings, printing on vellum and Holland papers. Tall 8vo, publisher's original three-quarter white vellum over boards, lettered in gilt and colours on the spines, pages untrimmed, with all tissue guards as called for. xxxii, 208; 263 pp. A very handsome and very nice set of this important and scarce edition. The bindings are in a fine state of preservation with only very light evidence of mellowing at the spine panels, the tips and extremities are all in very nice condition. With the typical evidence of the foxing usual to Vol. I. AN IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION. This edition restores some 30,000 words of Thoreau's manuscript which were cut before the book's first publication in 1854. This copy is very fresh, internally with only light evidence of the usual foxing, and is largely unopened. The fact that the title-page is in two states provides a nice opportunity to compare side by side the results of etching and engraving. One of the greatest books of American literature and a highlight of American thought. In attempting an experiment in simpl … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEMBRICH, Marcella
Sembrich was one of the Metropolitan Opera's most treasured artists until her sumptuous farewell gala of 1909. "Having already established herself as a lieder singer, making extended tours, she continued to give recitals until 1917, the year of her husband's death. She was by then active as a teacher, heading the voice departments of both the Curtis Institute and the Institute of Musical Art. Sembrich was one of the greatest sopranos in history. Like Patti (who became a staunch friend), she combined a dazzling technique with the purest lyricism. Her scale was perfectly matched over a range from c′ to f‴. In addition to Lucia, her most popular roles were Violetta, Gilda and Rosina; she was also a leading interpreter of Mozart and was admired for her Zerlina, Susanna and the Queen of Night. Her repertory also included two Wagner roles, Elsa (Lohengrin) and Eva (Die Meistersinger), and Puccini's Mimì. She was the 'musicians' singer' of her time, and she enjoyed playing chamber music with such friends as the members of the Flonzaley Quartet, or two-piano music, often with Paderewski." Philip L. Miller in Grove Music Online.. On an album leaf, 140 x 200 mm., four measures, with text commencing "Deh vieni, non tardar." Inscribed "To Miss Alice Elizabeth L. Wolff in remembrance of Marcella Sembrich New York, April 27th 1915."Laid down to mounting sheet at corners of verso.

Ostini's wonderful story. "One of the finest and most original children's books of Jugendstil" (Seebaß II, p. 254). - The unusual color-rich picture book of the Viennese artist, Hanns Pellar (1886-1971), reveals the influence of Gustav Klimt as well as that of Pellar's teachers Lefler and Stuck. After a visit to Versailles, Pellar imagined the fantastic and historical scenes, to which Fritz von Ostini constructed his story of fairy tales. "(Bildwelt, p. 352) 24 pages. - Cover slightly stained and tanned. Binding strengthened with matching pieces of pictorial endsheets. Abraham Hale, 1854-1919, served in the Federated Malay States Civil Service from 1884 to 1911. "He always lamented with that delightful candour which characterized him, that his literary talent was untrained: but for all that it was a very genuine talent. Had "The Adventures." been written two centuries ago, its author would have ranked with Defoe. Hale had an extraordinary talent for vivid detail" - Richard Winstedt in his obituary of the author, JSBRAS No.81, 1919. Hill 0314 [Attributes: First Edition]

Ernest H Shackleton
09, 1909 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of Ernest Shackleton's autobiographical account of his famous expedition to the South Pole. With half-titles. Illustrated throughout with two hundred andsixty-nine plates(collated complete), twelve of which are coloured, and three folding maps and a panoramato the rear of volume II. In February 1907, Shackleton presented to the Royal Geographical Society his plans for an Antarctic expedition, the details of which, under the name British Antarctic Expedition, were published in the Royal Society's newsletter, Geographic Journal. The aim was the conquest of both the geographical South Pole and the South Magnetic Pole. The Great Southern Journey , as Frank Wild called it, began on 19 October 1908. On 9 January 1909 Shackleton and three companions (Wild, Eric Marshall and Jameson Adams) reached a new Farthest South latitude of 88 23' S, a point only 112 miles (180 km) from the Pole. En route the South Pole party discovered the Beardmore Glacier, (named after Shackleton's patron), and became the first persons to see and travel on the South Polar Plateau. Their return journey to McMurdo Sound was a race against starvation, on half-rations for much of the way. At one point, Shackleton gave his one biscuit allotted for the day to the ailing Frank Wild, who wrote in his diary: All the money that was ever minted would not have bought that biscuit and the remembrance of that sacrifice will never leave meInk signatures and blindstamps of E. F. Andrews to the front of both volumes. Complete in two volumes. Condition: … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE BEUKELAER.
Paris. Livres
