Stevens, Horace J.
Houghton, Mich. Horace J. Stevens 1909. First Edition. 1628 pages plus 39 pages of advertisements. Publisher's green cloth. 8vo. TEG. Previous owner name on front flyleaf. Well thumbed, and with minor browning throughout (still supple). Paper very thin as usual. Overall minor soiling to the binding. A sound working/reference copy. Cloth. An astounding piece of reference work given the time. The first thirteen chapters go through the history of copper, it's geology, chemistry, how to mine and mill it, hydro and pyrometallurgy of copper, electrometallurgy of copper, alloys, brands and grades of copper, uses, substitutes and finally a glossary of mining terms. The balance of the book goes through various regions of the world, and enumerates the copper deposits known, the companies and their contact information, sometimes even information about the mine "Shaft was unwatered and retimbered, 1905, after several years' idleness...". There is a vast amount of information here for anyone studying the state of the industry at this time (1909).Very useful as a source book for places to look, companies to investigate, etc. Good.

20th Century. DescriptionPresented in an ornate gilt frame. There is some text fixed to the reverse- "Oil Painting on Board of Gundogs. This oil painting dates to 1909 and formed part of a huge hunting mural which covered one entire wall of a large mansion near Llandeilo. There was a fire in the 1980's and most was destroyed save for this piece, the bottom left hand corner. As intended for a wall mural, the brushstrokes are board and is best viewed at a distance of, say, 10 feet. The mural was signed Dario Rossetti who was presumably a visiting Italian artist as there is no one of that name recorded in British censuses, births, deaths, marriage etc." We have no way of confirming this story. Unsigned. On board. ConditionThe board has warped resulted in an undulation to the surface that is noticeable. Some discolouration to the sky area, craquelure and small losses typical for a picture of this age. There is a loss to decorative moulding in the upper right corner of the frame and some restoration in the lower left corner. Size: X-Large (>60cm) Framed: Yes Style: Realism Weight: 9000.00g [Attributes: Hard Cover]
