Robinson, W. Heath, illus.]; Kipling Rudyard
London Hodder and Stougton [1909]. First edition. With 30 color plates tipped-in within ornamental borders, and with black and white drawings on almost every page, all by W. Heath Robinson. Large 4to, original royal blue cloth lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt with fine pictorial designs on the upper cover and spine. A fine and very bright, beautifully preserved copy of this lovely book, the textblock clean and the plates all pristine, the cloth and gilt in excellent condition. FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK BY RUDYARD KIPLING . THE W. HEATH ROBINSON ILLUSTRATIONS ARE SUPERB BY ANY MEASURE. The trade edition of this volume was issued to benefit the "Daily Telegraph" National Bands Fund, and includes the text of a speech given by Kipling on the subject: "From the lowest point of view, a few drums and fifes in a battalion are worth five extra miles on a route march." Robinson’s highly sensuous illustrations perfectly complement Kipling’s poems of British seafaring around the world. The grand poem, SONG OF THE ENGLISH is followed by six subsidiary poems likely composed while the Kiplings were living in Vermont. The theme underlying much of this collection is that the English are the Chosen under the Lord. This is one of Kipling’s earliest verses specifically setting out his vision of the British Empire, and the duties which it imposes on the English people. His definition of 'the English' is wide, certainly embracing the people of the overseas Empire, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, but arguably also the Americans among whom he l … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Lámina con imagen de la Virgen. 240 pp.+2 hh. Enc. original en buen estado de conservación. 23x15,7. (BOXING.) JOHNSON, Jack.
[Chicago:] Brandt & Scheible,, 1909. Offset-lithographic poster (470 × 390 mm), en grisaille. Mounted, framed and glazed. Central image of Johnson in boxing pose with stars and stripes sash around his waist, superimposed over a large laurel wreath, either side are oval vignettes, one of the log cabin the "Birthplace of Johnson", the other of "Johnson in his Car", the champion had a succession of flashy and fast cars. Lightly browned verso, a few superficial creases, a small chip from the top margin, image unaffected, else very good. A remarkably well-preserved example of this uncommon poster celebrating the ascension to the world heavyweight throne of the great African-American boxer. Having spent several years trying to lure heavyweight champion James J. Jeffries, who refused to allow a black fighter to challenge for his title, into a match, Johnson finally won the title from Canadian Tommy Burns in Rushcutter's Bay, Australia, following a one-sided contest during which Johnson constantly taunted the champion; "Poor little Tommy, don't you know how to fight Tommy? They said you was the champion Tommy?". Visiting Canada the following year he was somewhat more gracious; "Let me say of Mr. Burns, a Canadian and one of yourselves, that he has done what no one else ever did, he gave a black man a chance for the championship. He was beaten, but he was game". Johnson's victory made him "the most hated man in America because he was black, a winner, and he flaunted it all … On the eve of the fight, writing for the New York Herald, Jack London told the world, "Burns is a white man a … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Wesley, Nehemiah Curnock (Editor)

With numerous illustrations throughout comprising of photographs, drawings and folding maps. Collated, complete. John Wesley was one of the founding fathers of Methodism, alongside his brother Charles and fellow cleric George Whitefield. Wesley remained an Anglican cleric in the Church of England as he believed Methodism lay within its tradition. This biographical work is sourced from Wesley's own journals. They are edited by Nehemiah Curnock. Little is stated of Curnock other than their editorship of the 'Methodist Recorder' from 1886-1906. Condition: In quarter calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the head and tail of spines. Further patches of rubbing to the extremities, which are bumped. Small loss to the head of spines to volumes V and VII. [RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, Nikolay Andreyevich 1844-1908] Benois, Alexandre 1870-1960
Rimsky-Korsakov's last opera, Coq d'Or (The Golden Cockerel) was first performed in Moscow at the Solodovnikov Theatre (Sergey Ivanovich Zimin's private opera company), on September 24/October 7, 1909. It is in a prologue, three acts, and an epilogue by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov to a libretto by Vladimir Nikolayevich Bel'sky after the eponymous imitation folk tale in verse by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, based in turn on 'The House of the Weathercock' and 'Legend of the Arabian Astrologer' from The Alhambra by Washington Irving. "The Golden Cockerel is the only one of Rimsky- Korsakov's 15 operas to have achieved repertory status beyond Russia. This was Dyagilev's doing. At the prompting of the artist Alexandre Benois, the great impresario staged the opera in Paris and London in 1914 (under the title Le coq d'or, which has stuck to it in the West), with the singers seated in rows at the sides of the stage, accompanying the movements of dancers and mimes, who enacted the plot according to the conventions of ballet d'action (choreography by Fokin)... It also set an important precedent for Stravinsky, whose opera The Nightingale, not to mention such later stage works as Renard, The Wedding and Pulcinella, to a greater or lesser extent embodied the same split between singing and movement. It was an important stage in the modernist dismantling of the Gesamtkunstwerk." Richard Taruskin in Grove Music Online. Benois is considered a seminal influence on moddern ballet set and costume design. "In 1901, [he] was appointed scenic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in Sain … [Click Below for Full Description]

Benois is considered a seminal influence on modern ballet set and costume design. "In 1901, [he] wa … [Click Below for Full Description]
