Sven Hedin
New York: The MacMillan Company, 1909. Condition: Very good - Signed. Two volumes (complete when published, a supplement was later published), octavo size, 949 total pp., with signature of Sven Hedin. In an age rife with exploration, Swedish explorer and travel writer Sven Hedin (1865-1952) made four expeditions to Central Asia, studying the topography and geology of the region, as well as both the prehistoric and modern culture. Painstakingly dedicated to his research, Hedin documented his travels thoroughly in numerous published volumes; "Trans-Himalaya" is an account of Hedin's exploration of Tibet, particularly the Transhimalaya, a 1,600-kilometre long mountain range in China, and the sources of the Indus and Brahmaputra Rivers (n. b., info from Wikipedia). Hedin is credited as being the first European to reach the Kailash region, and his discoveries paved the way for major scientific and cultural documentation of the Asian region by European scholars. The text is supplemented with a myriad of illustrations and photographs, many by the author himself, including several watercolours of the places he saw; the illustrations enhances the humanist quality of the text. These two volumes are the first edition of Hedin's work, and he anticipates a third volume in the Preface, to contain additional material from the expedition, which was published later. Each volume also contains maps of the regions Hedin visited, some drawn by Hedin himself, to fully form a fascinating picture of the region, with details and illustrations of the local people and culture from the perspective of … [Click Below for Full Description]

1909. Full Morocco. Morocco slipcase. Calf box. Very Good. The four paintings of Lowland landscapes are rendered with extraordinary precision and capture the best of the miniaturist's art. Indeed, they justify the consideration of miniature painting as an art unto itself. The album itself has no date, but we would conjecture that the paintings date from the late eighteenth century, based on the dress of the tiny human figures depicted in them. It is conceivable, though, that the paintings are a little later, as fashion in country settings tended to lag behind that of the cities, or the artist could have chosen to depict people in the clothes of yesteryear. The album itself measures 53 by 34 mm. Marbled endpapers. Gilt ruling on the boards. The book and its slipcase are housed in a presentation box measuring 11.5 by 14 cm, with a snap button to open and secure. Jean Jadot was a well-known Belgian Roman Catholic prelate (1909-2009) who would later serve as an apostolic delegate to the United States, among other prominent postings. He hailed from an aristocratic family and was a life-long collector of antiquarian books and manuscripts throughout his life. Gerald Tarleton saw action on the Normandy beaches in 1944 before taking of the Brussels garrison. The book would appear to have been a gift in appreciation for the liberation of Brussels. Condition: the book itself has considerable surface wear on its leather, and is heavily rubbed especially on its spine. The red leather slipcase, which has its own separate well within the box, is well-preserved, with only m … [Click Below for Full Description]

Soykin Skt. Peterburg, 1909. Octavo (22.5 x 16 cm). Title, 712, viii pp., multiple illustrations in text; ink stamps to title, pp. 5 and viii. Contemporary brown half calf over marbled boards, brown calf label with gilt lettering to spine. Richly illustrated record of all the Russian Empire monasteries subordinating to the Sinod Office at the beginning of XX century. The book was based on the extensive research of the published and unpublished historical records, as well as information and photographs provided by monasteries. Each record contains information on the history of a monastery, list of the important shrines preserved there, and its location. The monasteries are grouped by the provinces listed in the alphabetical order. As the work was published just some years before the establishment of the communist rule, which often purposefully destroyed monasteries and shrines, it has a great value as a record of the vanished historical monuments and spiritual centres of the Imperial Russia. The present copy bears a jacket, however, at variance with that described by Mitham under his entry for the 13th impression (the only jacket described within the second edition, p23, and one of the earliest described for the title): spine text here (in blue) repeating that on the spine of the book, "SONGS OF A SOURDOUGH -- R. Ward, Mrs. Humphrey (Mary Augusta Ward, nee Arnold, 1851-1920).
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1909-12. "Autograph Edition" SIGNED by Mrs. Ward. 16 volumes. Illustrated. Bound in full tan crushed morocco, t.e.g, gilt spine titles and rules in the panels and on the bands, red morocco doblures with fancy gilt corner pieces, watered silk flyleaves, the upper and lower covers with sets of seven poppies formed from blue on-lays, each with long stems terminating in small gilt hearts with gilt pointelles between, the entire design inverted below, the entire design surrounded with stylized gilt rule, double rules at the edges. One crown with small chip, the top edge gilt slightly damaged, all else fine - a stunning set. Item #14500 The binding are quite possibly the work of Constance Karslake of the Guild of Women Binders. They are strikingly similar to the binding design on "The Centaur", illustrated on plate seven in "The Bindings of Tomorrow" by Eliot Anstruther; and the poppy tools are also strikingly similar to the tools used in a Hampstead Bindery binding in our possession which we attribute to her as well.

Hofmannsthal, Hugo von, Schriftsteller (1874-1929)
Rodaun, Juni. 1? SS. Qu.-4to. BADEN-POWELL (Robert, Lord, 1857-1941, Defender of Mafeking & Founder of the Boy Scouts)
Exceptional early postcard photo signed "Robert Baden Powell" and dated with an autograph amendment next to the printed title "Chief of Scouts Lt Genl Baden Powell", he has overwritten the initials which must have been 'CB' with 'K.C.B.', the image shows him three quarters length in ceremonial scouting uniform & hat, leaning on a staff, 5½" x 3½", no place, November On his return from Africa in 1903, Baden-Powell found that his military training manual, Aids to Scouting, had become a best-seller, and was being used by teachers and youth organisations. Following his involvement in the Boys' Brigade as Brigade Secretary and Officer in charge of its scouting section and with encouragement from his friend, William Alexander Smith, Baden-Powell decided to re-write Aids to Scouting to suit a youth readership. In August 1907 he held a camp on Brownsea Island to test out his ideas. About twenty boys attended: eight from local Boys' Brigade companies, and about twelve public school boys, mostly sons of his friends.Baden-Powell was also influenced by Ernest Thompson Seton, who founded the Woodcraft Indians. Seton gave Baden-Powell a copy of his book The Birch Bark Roll of the Woodcraft Indians and they met in 1906. The first book on the Scout Movement, Baden-Powell's Scouting for Boys was published in six instalments in 1908, and has sold approximately 150 million copies as the fourth best-selling book of the 20th century.Boys and girls spontaneously formed Scout troops and the Scouting Movement had inadvertently started, first as a national, and soon an international phenomenon. … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Bertha M. Denny]
Nashville: 1909-1913. Postcard Album. A faux oblong leather post card album containing 135 extant cards circa 1909 to 1913. Carlson, a sailor, is sending the postcards to Bertha M. Denny in Nashville, Tennessee. Ms. Denny is listed in the 1910 census as being 17 seventeen years old. The front free endpaper contains the title "Around the World with Jack L. Carlson" and pastedown has Ms. Denny's name and we assume she assembled the album. Several loose cards not secured. The cards include the range of post card production from inexpensive poor quality photomechanical to high quality color embossed card stock and 18 photo post cards of ship life among Carlson's and his fellow sailors. Ms. Denny has aptly named the album as it visually documents thru the popular medium of post cards Asia, the Caribbean, Central America and both coasts of the U.S. The only geographic lacking a strong presence is Europe. A few of the cards have minor rubbing and shallow chips to the margins but the majority are good to very good condition. It appears Mr. Carlson spent much time in Guantanamo Bay Naval Station with several cards from Cuba. Very good. Item #15887.
