Marinetti, Filippo Tommaso
Paris, Le Figaro, 1909 (Samedi 20 Février ), Prima edizione integrale ufficiale. The] three-column piece by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti [ ] was destined to become one of the central documents of the avant-garde [.] a pivotal point in the history [ ] of twentieth-century aesthetics. [ ] A veritable ground zero of the avant-garde» (Somigli). [Click Below for Full Description]

(Churchill) Blunt, Wilfrid Scawen
London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1909. First edition. 343, [1] pp. 8vo. CHURCHILL'S COPY: THE FIRST ONE PRINTED. Presented by Blunt to Churchill, "Winston S. Churchill with kind regards from Wilfrid Scawen Blunt. Nov 25 1909 for Nov 30." In his distinctive hand, Churchill has added on the front pastedown: "This was the first copy printed WSC." There are the blookplates of both Winston Churchill and his son, Randolph. Dokter notes in his article on Blunt's influence on Churchill, "Blunt continued to pressure Churchill to be an imperial reformer in the same way he had done with Lord Randolph. After discussing his latest book, India Under Ripon, with Churchill, Blunt concluded that Winston was "much more favourable to my anti-Imperial views than he was two months ago. Indeed he is almost converted to the view that the British Empire will eventually ruin England" (Dockter). The relationship between Blunt and Winston Churchill is well-known if under-reported. Blunt - poet, hedonist, diplomat, traveller and radical anti-Imperialist - was a good friend of Randolph Churchill and assisted the young Winston in his biography of his father. Blunt had no small influence over Churchill's early political career, especially toward Home Rule in Ireland, and prison reform. He prosecuted his anti-Imperialist agenda at every opportunity, including policy in Somaliland, and the treatment of muslims in Crete. Blunt's influence began to wane once Churchill was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty in 1911 when they drifted over policy regarding the Empire. However, they maintained a strong friendship. STRAUSS, Richard 1864-1949
On a postcard, 143 x 95 mm. Dated Schierke, January 2, 1909 [!1910]. In black ink. Autograph address to verso "Herrn Geheimrat E. von Schuch... Kötschenbroda [!Kötzschenbroda] bei Dresden. On a postcard of the Hotel Fürst zu Stolberg, Schierke im Oberharz. In German (with translation). Strauss states his terms for a planned meeting with his friend and colleague in Berlin and discusses the programming of a guest concert to be conducted by Schuch: "Dear Friend, Happy New Year! On the evening on the 5th I will be back in Berlin. If you come on the 6th or 7th, I will be yours all day, only in the evening I have [to conduct] Elektra on the 6th and Meistersinger on the 7th... Mottl is possibly willing to cede Tod und Verklärung to you. We will find it difficult to squeeze it in because the programs are already very long." Strauss inadvertently completed the final blank in the date with a "9," resulting in the year 1909. That it was actually 1910 is confirmed by the postmark (January 3, 1910). Slightly worn and browned; corners slightly creased. The conductor Ernst von Schuch (1846-1916) was Kapellmeister at the Dresden opera. He conducted the premières of Strauss's Feuersnot (1901), Salome (1905), Elektra (1909), and Der Rosenkavalier (1911). The letter also mentions the conductor Felix Mottl (1856-1911), then employed at the Munich opera.

Shakespeare, William (Text by); Arthur Rackham (Illustrations by)
Hachette et Cie, Paris, 1909. 1/330. Folio (11 3/4 x 9 1/4"). [6], 134, [2]pp. Uncut. Original gilt-stamped full vellum, with gold lettering to spine and front cover. Top edge gilt. Tipped in color frontispiece. Illustrated title page in black and gold lettering. Originally published in London by William Heinemann (1908), this limited edition of William Shakespeare's romantic comedy takes on a new and vivid life in these brilliant images by Arthur Rackham, one of the preeminent illustrators of the early 20th century. This work is indeed splendidly illustrated throughout with numerous in-text and full-page b/w illustrations as well as forty striking color plates mounted on brown art paper, all with captioned tissue guards. "Some of the floriated headings are the finest of Rackham's line at the time, as for example the heading vignette for Act One, Scene One, which with typical Rackham irrelevance spreads its tendrils over the page, and into the text, ignoring the fact that the setting is supposed, according to Shakespeare, to be the Palace of Theseus, and throwing us immediately into a tangle-wood Rackhamerie, with mice, pixies and a sleeping maiden." (Fred Gettings. Arthur Rackham, pp. 117-123).One of 330 numbered copies on Vélin paper, of which this is No. 168.Binding partly age-toned and foxed along spine and edges. String tie detached but present. Minor and sporadic offsetting throughout. Text in French. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition. Shakespeare, William; Rackham, Arthur (illustrator)
William Heinemann, London, 1909. Signed limited first edition, number 701 of 1000 copies, of illustrator Arthur Rackham's legendary treatment of A Midsummer-Night's Dream: "And as imagination bodies forth / The forms of things unknown, the poet's pen / Turns them to shapes and gives to airy nothing / A local habitation and a name." Rackham was at his best in imagining the personality and play of fairies. His famous color plates capture the elegant hauteur of Titania, the impish plotting of Puck, and the comic confusion of Bottom, but the success of the book stems as much from Rackham's vignettes and frames, glimpses of the fairy mischief on the margins of Shakespeare's world. A very good example of a classic gift book, one of the high spots of the Golden Age of Illustration. Quarto, measuring 11.5 x 9 inches: [6], 134, [2]. Original full vellum, front board lettered and decorated in gilt with tree design, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, all other edges uncut, stiff brown endpapers. Half-title, with limitation signed by Rackham on verso. Title page printed in brown and black. Frontispiece and 39 full-page color plates tipped onto heavy brown paper with printed tissue guards; dozens of black-and-white illustrations, including full-page designs, vignettes, frames, headpieces and tailpieces. Lacking silk ties. Light soiling to binding and toning to spine, some toning to pages adjacent to brown paper leaves. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Hüysmans, J.-K. (Text by); J.-F. Raffaëlli (Illustrations by); Lucien Descaves (Preface by)
Librairie des Amateurs A. Ferroud. - F. Ferroud, Successeur, Paris, 1909. 1/250. Quarto (10 1/2 x 7 1/2"). [4], vi, [2], 262, [2]pp. Uncut. Original glassine over printed dust-jacket and blind wrappers. Tissue-guarded etched color frontispiece. Front cover and title with red and black lettering. Etched title. Book housed in a custom made linen covered slipcase.Originally published in 1879, Joris-Karl Hüysmans's "Les Soeurs Vatard" was the author's second novel. His first, "Marthe" (1876), had earned the praise of Émile Zola and Hüysmans had come to be associated with the older author and his Naturalist school of fiction. "Les S?urs Vatard" shows the clear influence of Naturalism, being a realistic depiction of working-class life based on meticulous documentation. The novel tells the story of two sisters who work in a Parisian book-binding factory. Huysmans had inherited such a factory from his mother on her death in 1876, allowing him to observe the lives of his employees at close quarters. The plot concentrates on the unhappy love affairs of the sisters of the title, Céline and Désirée. This limited edition is splendidly illustrated with 28 original etchings by French realist painter Jean-François Raffaëlli, including 5 full-page in color. One of 140 copies on Vélin d'Arches (No. 212), after 20 on grand Japon or grand Vélin d'Arches with plates in 3 states and an original watercolor, 30 on grand Japon or grand Vélin d'Arches with plates in 3 states, and 60 on grand Japon or grand Vélin d'Arches with plates in 2 states (total 250 copies).Minor soiling to slipcase. Winston S. Churchill
Whitehall, London. This is a 13 August 1909 typed, signed, and hand-corrected letter from future Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill to future Prime Minister David Lloyd George. In this letter, the once and future Conservative Party scion promotes a strikingly radical Liberal land reform tax policy intended not merely to fund government, but to systematically redistribute wealth. Land reform was a fulcrum controversy of the watershed "People’s Budget" of 1909, which forced a reckoning with the House of Lords and the General Election of 1910. This letter also suggests that Churchill – not David Lloyd George – may have initially advocated for this particular policy. Churchill’s letter might be best characterized as a mini policy paper on what would become the "Acceptance in lieu" provision in British tax law, under which inheritance tax debts may be written off in exchange for property surrendered to the state. This was specifically proposed as an alternative means for the wealthy to pay increased inheritance taxes imposed by the People’s Budget of 1909. Churchill’s 644 words are typed and hand-written on four pages of his Board of Trade stationery. "Private" is typed and underscored at the top left. The salutation "My dear Lloyd George" and valediction "Yours vy sincerely. | Winston S. Churchill" are in Churchill’s hand, with seven minor hand-corrections to pages two and three. The letter is in near-fine condition, only slightly soiled and toned, each leaf with a single horizontal crease from original posting and a small circular hole punched at the upper left, ostensibly fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

WELLS, H. G.
London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1909. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gilt, vignette design in gilt to front cover within frame blocked in blind. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom brown cloth solander box. Slight rubbing to extremities, small bump to foot of front board, foxing to book block edges, faint offsetting to endpapers; a very good copy in the jacket with sunned spine and edges, creasing and nicks to spine ends and tips, a couple of scuffs to panels. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "'The Young Mistress's Tale' to Arnold Bennett. With love from his nephew, H. G. Wells", with Bennett's bookplate to the front pastedown. Ann Veronica is commonly believed to be inspired by Well's 1908-9 extramarital affair with feminist author Amber Reeves (1887-1981), a fact to which he seems to be referring in his genial inscription. It was the first of a series of Wells's novels aimed at addressing the taboos surrounding sexual desire in Edwardian England, and features vignettes of the women's suffrage movement in Great Britain, including a chapter inspired by the 1908 attempt of suffragettes to storm Parliament. Bennett, a close friend of Well's from 1897 until his death in 1931 "was clearly alert to the same issues. especially women's rights, and the 'new woman'. Hence he produced two important novels which turn on married infidelity and divorce (Leonora, 1903, and Whom God hath Joined, 1906)" and "all through his career Bennett showed remarkable insight into the plight of women … [Click Below for Full Description]
