[Women's Suffrage, Cookery] The Washington Equal Suffrage Association and Linda Deziah Jennings, ed.
Seattle: Trade Register Print, 1909. First Edition. Original yellow and white publisher's cloth boards, depicting waving pennants of "Votes for Women" and "Good Things to Eat" above the title. Extensive soiling and edgewear to the covers, with both hinges tender and cracking. Soiling to edges of text block affecting both sets of endpapers, the rear section on Additional Recipes, and the Index. Contemporary ownership inscription on front endpaper: "J. Walker Williams, 2-17-[19]10. Just take a look of the name of this book, which I expect to use when I get to be a cook!" Four pages of handwritten recipes in a contemporary hand added to the Additional Recipes section, plus an additional page laid in. Else an internally clean and complete copy of this exceptional rarity, which has appeared only once at auction and is not held by any institution according to OCLC. As American women pushed toward suffrage, state associations produced and sold practical materials to raise money to support their lobbying efforts. This cookery manual is an important example. Released only one year before Washington became the fifth state to support the 19th Amendment, this cookbook promoted women's equality by embracing female domestic innovation as opposed to denying it. "A preface to a compilation of cooking recipes may seem to many to be quite unnecessary, but let us look deeper for a moment and we will see that modern cooking represents the evolution of civilized life. Students of the human race declare it was woman who first discovered how to build a fire...with the ability to make fire began c … [Click Below for Full Description]

JOHN ELLIS SHIPPAM
SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA: (1909). 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. On offer is a super group of four [4] original manuscript diaries with entries dated 1909 - 1927 handwritten by a recent British immigrant to San Diego California. While the first three books are lesser and sporadically written they along with the full 4th book covering 1918 - 1927 make for an excellent detailed account of life San Diego in the early 20th Century. From references to community happenings such as a new post office opening to prices for various goods and services to one of the many earth tremors that afflict this area, it offers a social historian a valuable window into the city's early life. Chock full of details of the writer's daily life casual research suggests that the writer is John Shippam, who along with some family members, emigrated from England in 1904 or 1905. This is supported by entries that refer to 'Cecil', his brother and 'Delia' his sister who accompanied him to The United States. There is also a reference to sending pictures back to England. Death records in San Diego, CA record the burial of John E. Shippam born 1851 and deceased 1927 Included in the 1914 diary is a typed note to "Mr. Shippam". Three diaries are by North British Mercantile Insurance Company of the type printed for use by their sales people. The 4th diary is a generic diary with blank pages. The 1909 diary has only a few entries. The longest is a cash account entry detailing the seeding and planting of potatoes and beans. The diary measures 5 1/2 in by 3 in. It is in very good condition. It contains only 3 or 4 entries … [Click Below for Full Description]

Darwin, C. [Darwin, F. (ed.)]
Cambridge, The University Press, 1909. 8vo (22.5 x 15.0 cm). Frontispiece portrait (tissue-guarded), xxii, 53 pp., one plate with facsimile handwriting of Charles Darwin. Original quarter vellum over printed boards. In transparent protective wrapper. A very rare and essential piece of Darwiniana, being the earliest written thoughts (1842) by Charles Darwin on evolution and natural selection. It was discovered in 1896 in a cupboard in Darwin's house in the village of Down(e), and edited by Charles Darwin's seventh child, third son and foremost biographer, the botanist Sir Francis Darwin (1848-1925) [it is rather peculiar that Charles Darwin himself never received a knighthood]. One of a limited, "unpublished" run: "Presented by the syndics of the University Press to..." Dr. J. Porter (handwritten in ink) "...on the occasion of the celebration at Cambridge of the centenary of the birth of Charles Darwin and of the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species". It was handed out on June 23rd, 1909 in only a limited number of signed copies. Later in the year, another edition, for the trade, was published, in "olive-green buckram bevelled boards" (Freeman, p. 183, number 1556). Other editions followed in 1958, 1963, 1969 and 1971. Uncut. A few small spots on the boards, otherwise a meticulously clean copy. Freeman, 1555. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

H.A. SOMMER
ASEA ABOARD THE S.S. CHINA: (1909). 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a sensational, original manuscript travel diary, providing a very detailed description of an eventful round-the-world cruise taken in 1909 hand written by a California man with a keen eye for observation and a gift for description. The 7 x 4 inch book has 200 pages or so and is a little more than half filled and commences June 14 to September 7th ending abruptly upon leaving Naples. The author, H.A. Sommer and his wife [Milly] left their home in Los Angeles and travelled by train to San Francisco where they spend some time touring. He comments on the ruins of City Hall and the Courthouse and the destruction caused by the great earthquake of 1906. 'We also viewed the Ruins of the City Hall and Courthouse from the last great Earthquake a horrible sight. Form this we can obtain a slight Idea of what the terrible destruction must have been.' [June 14] They then board the Steam Ship China for their journey to Asia. Their first major stop is Hawaii and his notes are very descriptive, ranging from Japanese warships in the harbor to architecture and the local people. 'The whole city of Honolulu is a Dreamland it lacks word to describe its climate is perfect all year round never above 84o and seldom below 70o. As we rode back and forward on the street we noticed every Residence large or small was surrounded by a large variety of flowers and trees.' [June 23] En route, there are two deaths, one described as a suicide by a crew member and another of a steerage passenger who died of illness. He describes the bu … [Click Below for Full Description]

CROWLEY, Aleister] VEREY, The Rev. C.
Privately Printed [ Renouard ], London [Actually Paris], 1909. Wrappers. Small Octavo. xxii + 144pp. Original mottled salmon-coloured soft paper wrappers, with title across upper wrapper, lettered up spine, and with publisher's device in centre of rear wrapper (all printed in black). Printed on machine made paper. "Clouds Without Water" has a complex and chequered history. Despite the statement on the title page that it was published in London, "Clouds Without Water" was actually printed by Renouard of Paris (who had earlier published Crowley's obscene homo-erotic parody, "The Bagh-I-Muattar") The book is poetry with some erotic undertones - which is presumably why Crowley playfully published it under the name of a fictitious Priest "The Rev. C. Verey" and had the words "Privately Printed for Circulation Amongst Ministers of Religion" printed on the title page! From the collection of English bibliophile and Aleister Crowley scholar Nicholas Bishop-Culpeper with his book-label loosely inserted. Wrappers lightly chafed at all edges particularly corners and spine ends, several tiny tears to fore-edges, light creasing to top corner of upper wrapper. Spine chipped, creased and splitting horizontally (as common). Overall a clean about VG copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Harbiye Nezareti, Istanbul, 1909. Large folding lithographed map ca. 159,5x54,5 cm, dissected into 24 compartments and linen backed, borders outlined in colour. With a lithographed title, legend, seals and signatures of the Ottoman Border Commission in the right lower corner. Paper slightly age toned, minor small tears or chipping on the extremities of several compartments slightly affecting the image, but overall a very good map. Historically important large detailed map of the OttomanIranian border based on the survey of the special commission of the Ottoman Ministry of War. The process of demarcation of the border between the Ottoman Empire and the Sublime State of Persia was an ongoing issue from the 16th century, and a subject of three international boundary commissions in the 19 - early 20th centuries (1843-47, 1848-65, 1907-13). The process was largely influenced by Great Britain, Russia, and Germany whose interests concerned the oil exploitation (AngloPersian Oil Company on the Qasr-e ??r?n-Mandal? plateau), railway construction (German-built Baghdad Railway) and general political influence in the region (the echoes of the Great Game). The major outcome of the protocol signed in Constantinople in 1913 was the placement of most of the Shatt al-Arab River under Ottoman control, apart from two anchorages left for Persia, which laid the groundwork for continuous friction over the border. The map is oriented to the east, with Persia occupying its upper part and the Ottoman Empire - the lower part. The border is outlined from the Aras River in the north (where both the Ot … [Click Below for Full Description]
