[Cookery] August Schaal
Potosi, Wisconsin: 1909. Pocket sized Potosi State Bank ledger measuring 6.75 x 3.5". Bound in sheep covered card with the name Aug. Schaal on both the front cover and header of the second page. Comprised of 21 handwritten pages containing 32 recipes in the same hand. While we haven't located August, it is possible she is the daughter of the local German farmer George Schaal, listed as living in Potosi and nearby Waterloo during this period per the Commemorative Biographical Record of the Counties of Rock, Green, and Grant (1901). Transforming what would have been a banking receipt book into a cookery receipt book, August Schaal draws together a series of solely vegetarian recipes -- something of an oddity for a German immigrant family. Yet the recipes' focus on vegetables and grains suggests that these were readily available, whereas meat might have been less commonly accessible and overly expensive in a mining region like Potosi. The number of bread recipes suggests this edible was a staple for most meals; August notes different options depending on what type of flour is available, including Wheat, Whole Wheat, Graham, Oatmeal, and Corn breads as well as corn bread variations Southern Spoon Bread and Hoe Cakes. Indeed, a number of the staple recipes which are simple and high yield are identified as "southern" (as in the case of Southern Vegetable Soup). Some have more generic names but draw on what is easy to access: Succotash or Stewed Apricots for example. Other recipes appear to be for special occasions or guests -- more labor intensive, less shelf stable, and with mor … [Click Below for Full Description]

A fascinating look at the quick development of aeronautics at the turn of the twentieth century. This work discusses the possible use of aeroplanes and other flying machines in warfare. This book was published just a few years before the outbreak of the First World War, during which some aeroplanes were indeed used in warfare. This was the first work on aerial warfare to be published for the public, other works before this having been limited to the military. At the time this work was published, aeroplanes were still a very new phenomena, with the first successful manned flight taking place in 1903. Written by R. P. Hearne, who also wrote 'Zeppelins and Super-Zeppelins', and was a motoring journalist. With an introduction by Hiram Maxim, an inventor who is best … [Click Below for Full Description]

POUND, Ezra.
London: Elkin Mathews, 1909. Small octavo. Original dark red boards, spine and front board lettered in gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Ownership inscription of political historian John Ehrman to front free endpaper. Spine toned, slight rubbing to extremities, short closed split to foot of front joint; a very good copy. First edition, first impression, from the library of James Griffyth Fairfax (1886-1976), with his ownership inscription, dated December 1909, to the front free endpaper, and marginal pencil marks to p. 35. Griffyth Fairfax was a fellow poet who attended New College, Oxford, and published his first collections of poetry whilst there. He and Pound's "literary and personal careers were closely intertwined. They were friendly rivals both as poets and as prospective suitors for the hand of Dorothy Shakespear" (Witemeyer, p. 244). Around 1914, however, "their London lives diverged sharply. In his poetry and criticism, Pound turned radically away from the Edwardian consensus, convinced that it lacked imaginative vitality. He also married Dorothy. Fairfax, on the other hand, became more conservative and continued to write in the Edwardian manner", eventually becaming a Conservative MP in 1924 (ibid., p. 244). Griffyth Fairfax reviewed the present work for the Melbourne Book Lover, noting that this, and Pound's Personae (1909) could "almost be used as touch-stones for the finding of what is genuine in the poetry of our time". Although 1,000 sets of sheets for this work were printed, only around 500 were issued thus, the remainders being re-issued in an edition … [Click Below for Full Description]

Major Henry Rodolph Davies
Cambridge University Press, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Bound in publisher's blue cloth. 25 cm. Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Scratch on front board. Minor shelf wear. xii, 431 p. 104 photographic images on 74 plates. Fold out map and 3 folded tables included. Generally clean. Note on end pages. <br> Davies, a member of the British intelligence service, was commissioned to travel to the Chinese province of Yunnan to survey potential railway routes to connect British-occupied Burma with the upper Yangtze river and through to Sichuan. "Major Davies began the surveys of Yunnan in 1895, and was assisted in 1898 and in the following year by Captain C H D Ryder. Their journey started at Bhamo and their surveys covered a large area to the north, west and south of the Yunnan. Their work was of a very high order, and after it there was some reality in a map of Yunnan, which had hitherto been crossed only by a number of route surveys." - Baker. Major Davies notes in the first paragraphs that this was a little-known part of the world, even to the British (who claimed it as part of the Empire). Most roads were untraveled, plants and animals undocumented. Yet the region was a critical link historically for traders and armies going between China and India. Refs: Cordier: Sinica, 3332. Einar S
Sweden , 1909. A collection of 23 small format cards featuring landscapes. The subject matter reflects nature in a particular locale throughout the year. It includes three (3) seasons of a sparsely treed country lane, an array of water scenes through the trees, just trees and just water. While contemplating the images one conjures a sense calm, peace and serenity. Each illustration in done in black ink, on the blank side of a note card. The majority of the images are of landscape scenes featuring forests, mountains, or lakes. Three of the illustrations have accents of red ink as well. One unique card in this collection depicts on the lined side of the note card, a head of a donkey with the caption, "That's me." Several of the note cards have "Minum Kultani" on them, which is Finnish for "my love". One card features the below quote: "I feel today as if life were at an end. I guess that my window faces west. Cohen was right in his saying that 'life is very funny proposition after all' - but I don't see where the fun comes in, not even on pay-days and I wonder." Another: "There is more summer in Sweden than any place else (in the hearts - written on reverse)" This quote is signed with the name Einar, a Scandinavian boy's name meaning warrior or leader. The illustrated note cards in the collection often have either Einar or the initials E. S. on them. Additionally a few times the illustrations are dated. It is clear that some of these note cards were originally used for study purposes as on the back of some cards are some notes, such as exogamy (a scientific term) or S … [Click Below for Full Description]
