Stoker, Bram
London: William Heinemann, 1909.. Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii-viii 1-367 [368: blank], original decorated red cloth, front panel stamped in black, spine panel stamped in gold, publisher's monogram stamped in blind on rear panel. First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by Stoker dated the month of publication on front free endpaper: "Margaret D Thomson / With Bram's love / 7.7.09." THE LADY OF THE SHROUD "is a heady mix of the predictions of H. G. Wells and the romantic adventure stories of Anthony Hope. It is written in the form of journals kept by the principal characters (as with DRACULA); the title character is really a princess forced to pose as a vampire. The fantastic ending (missing from the abridged versions) predicts aerial warfare five years before the outbreak of the Great War in Europe." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 405-6. Émile Dacier; Gabriel de Saint-Aubin
Société de reproduction des dessins de maîtres 1909-1921. Eight sale catalogues and three Salon livrets bound in six volumes, housed in their original wrappers and marbled-paper dustjackets, each with printed title label mounted on the front cover; 100s of pages and leaves of plates; small 4to, edges untrimmed. The set is further housed in two black-cloth solander cases with a black leather label with gilt title on the spines. A very rare, complete set of Émile Dacier's reproduction of eleven Parisian eighteenth-century art auction catalogues and Salon livrets for the Académie royale (of paintings, drawings, engravings, sculpture, bronzes, porcelains, etc.) that had been hand illustrated by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (1724 1780). The catalogues are each prefaced by Dacier's very useful and detailed background notes pertaining to the sale or exhibition and its contents ("a monument of scholarship and precision," Bailey, n. 74), followed by reproductions of each page from the catalogue that Saint-Aubin illustrated, tip mounted one to a page on Arches paper. The notes also include comments and descriptions of the drawings and have been useful to scholars for identifying certain artworks in the given sale. Originals of these catalogues very rarely appear on the market and virtually impossible to acquire; the vast majority of known copies are held in institutions (including 13 in the Bibliothèque nationale de France; 7 in the Musée de Beaux Arts in Paris; and 6 in the Philadelphia Museum of Art). These illustrated catalogues were supplemental to Saint-Aubin's primary oeuvre: drawing … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sir Francis Galton
Condition: Good. DETAILS OF ITEM Book Title. Essays in Eugenics Author/Editor. Sir Francis Galton Language. English Publisher. The Eugenics Education Society Publishing Date. 1909 Edition. 1st Hard Cover/Soft Cover. Soft Pages. 109 Condition. Book only lightly handled/used and generally in good condition with expected wear/discolouring for age (occasional light foxing/marks), pages lightly creased in places and corners slightly turned. Covers worn/rubbed, grubby/marked, unevenly faded, lightly creased and with some scuffing to edges/corners. Pages and text clean. Description of Contents. The authors preface reads as follows - The following essays are re-printed in the chronological order of their delivery. They will, therefore, help to show something of the progress of Eugenics during the last few years, and to explain my own views upon its aims and methods, which often have been, and still sometimes are, absurdly misrepresented. The practice of Eugenics has already obtained a considerable hold on popular estimation, and is steadily acquiring the status of a practical question, and not that of a mere vision in Utopia. The power by which Eugenic reform must chiefly be effected, is that of Popular Opinion, which is amply strong enough for that purpose whenever it shall be roused. Public Opinion has done as much as this on many past occasions and in various countries, of which much evidence is given in the Essay on Restrictions in Marriage. It is now ordering our acts more intimately than we are apt to suspect, because the dictates of Public Opinion become so thoroughly assimi … [Click Below for Full Description]

COCTEAU, Jean.
Paris: Socit d'ditions, , 1909. Paris: Société d'Éditions, , 1909. Octavo (175 x 130 mm). Original wrappers preserved in later tan morocco by Alix, with slipcase. Small JP book label. Front wrapper (slightly dusty) inscribed by the author. Light marginal toning, short closed marginal tear in half-title fore edge, an excellent copy. First edition, hors commerce copy, inscribed by Cocteau on the front wrapper, "Pour madame de Brontelle respectueux hommage Jean Cocteau". This was the author's first book, published when he was only 19 years old, a poetical collection inspired by the Mille et un nuits. "Cocteau's poetry was at one with his Parisian image of a Salon prince, and his cultivated pastel verses evoked Versailles, Watteau and Whistler as well as Beardsley and Wilde (an entire sequence was devoted to Salomé). All was enshrouded necessarily within the moral ether of German lieder and Nordic mists" (Williams, Jean Cocteau, 2008).

Winston S. Churchill
13 August 1909 typed, signed, and hand-corrected four-page letter from future Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill on the stationery of his first Cabinet post to future Prime Minister David Lloyd George advocating a radical liberal land reform tax policy Winston S. Churchill Condition: Very Good This is a 13 August 1909 typed, signed, and hand-corrected letter from future Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill to future Prime Minister David Lloyd George. In this letter, the once and future Conservative Party scion promotes a strikingly radical Liberal land reform tax policy intended not merely to fund government, but to systematically redistribute wealth. Land reform was a fulcrum controversy of the watershed "People's Budget" of 1909, which forced a reckoning with the House of Lords and the General Election of 1910. This letter also suggests that Churchill - not David Lloyd George - may have initially advocated for this particular policy. Churchill's letter might be best characterized as a mini policy paper on what would become the "Acceptance in lieu" provision in British tax law, under which inheritance tax debts may be written off in exchange for property surrendered to the state. This was specifically proposed as an alternative means for the wealthy to pay increased inheritance taxes imposed by the People's Budget of 1909. Churchill's 644 words are typed and hand-written on four pages of his Board of Trade stationery. "Private" is typed and underscored at the top left. The salutation "My dear Lloyd George" and valediction "Yours vy sincerely. | Winston S. Churchill" are in … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHURCHILL, Winston S.
London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1909?]. London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1909?]. By The Right Hon. Winston Spencer Churchill, M.P., President of the Board of Trade. Selected from his Lancashire and other recent speeches. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. No dust jacket, as with every known copy. Housed in a custom red cloth solander box, red morocco label to spine lettered in gilt. Spine a little faded, tiny bumping to extremities, covers lightly bowed, hinges just beginning to split, pages a little toned as usual, light creasing to fore edge of last few leaves with a few tiny chips, but overall a near-fine copy. First edition, first issue. The edition was issued in both cloth and paper wrappers, with Cohen recording documentary evidence that the cloth issue preceded the paper-wrappers issue by a couple of weeks. The publisher's records show that just 100 copies were bound in cloth out of a total print-run of 40,000 copies. There are two known states of both the cloth and paper wrapper issues, the first state having p. 71 misnumbered "1", with the second state having the correct page number; this copy is an example of the latter state. There were also five other later newspaper issues. Following the rejection by the Conservative-dominated House of Lords of the Liberal government's budget, Prime Minister Asquith dissolved parliament and took the Liberal case to the country, supporting higher taxation on the wealthy to fund an expanded welfare state. Churchill, as President of the Board of Trade, hit the campaign trail with a serie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Very Good / Signed. Washington: Harris & Ewing. Very Good. Mounted and signed portrait of Reed Smoot, Utah United States Senator and the only LDS apostle to hold a national elected office. Inscription reads, "Yours Sincerely Reed Smoot." Photograph is pasted onto Harris & Ewing mount and measures 5" x 7" without mount, 8 -1/2" x 10 -3/4" with mount. Photograph is in very good condition with light silvering; mount has heavy chipping and top right corner is detached but present, Smoot's signature is intact. The photo was taken by Harris & Ewing, Washington's largest photographic firm, who were made famous by their candid shots of William Howard Taft titled "The Anatomy of the Smile." Taken circa 1909; the Library of Congress holds two similar portraits of Smoot by Harris & Ewing taken in 1909. Reed Smoot's election to the Senate in 1902 was followed by a deluge of complaints, the Mormon belief in polygamy at the heart of the opposition. An expulsion case was received in 1903; the issue was whether there could be religious disqualification for Senate membership (Deseret News online). "The three-year inquiry resulted in the Utah Senator retaining his Senate seat. The U. S. Senate had taken a stand in support of religious freedom for all Americans" (U. S. Senate Online). Early photos of Smoot, especially signed, are rare.; Signed by Associated. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Buber, Martin
Hall in Tirol (Austria) and Berlin: August 1-October 25, 1909. 7 pp., letters on Rütten & Loening letterhead. 4to. A group of letters by the Jewish writer and philosopher Martin Buber (1878-1965), then serving as Editor in Chief for the Berlin publisher Rütten & Loening, to a literary agent who had submitted manuscripts of several different writers, mainly to reject the offerings but not without encouragement. The earliest letter in the group finds Buber touching base about the submissions before he embarks on a trip: "My dear Mr. Halbert, I am just on the verge of going to Vienna for a few days ... I have been taking and reading the Bernard with me while traveling and will write you about my impressions of it on my return. If I were the publisher, I would want it, but would want an out on the condition that is not completed yet. I am curious about the Jürgensen comedy. Is the man sure which is the right direction in which to build his comedy? What can you tell me about his novellas? My Bojer, which I viewed once again, is unfortunately nothing. The thing is there are some benefits, and there are some advantages, and their human characteristics too schematically sympathetic, demonstrably. The contrasts are all artificially elaborated...." Buber is unenthusiastic about two of the manuscripts in a follow up letter of August 12: "The Bernard is not something that I can recommend to the publisher; the anecdotes are often drawn from doubtful sources, in general unconvincingly told, and on whole the thing is not a whole. What he is precisely trying to convey is just not clear. Fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexandre MEUNIER (fl. 1896 - 1938) / MINISTÈRE DES COLONIES (FRANCE).
[Paris: Service Géographique des Colonies, ], 1909. Chromolithograph on 6 un-joined sheets, rolled (Very Good, clean and bright with wide untrimmed margins, just a couple of small closed tears in blank margins of one sheet), each sheet: 69 x 64 cm (27 x 25 inches); entire map would, if joined measure approximately 175 x 125 cm (69 x 49 inches). Extremely Rare - a colossal 6-sheet work that is the first complete and accurate map of the Bambouk Region (the borderlands of modern Sénégal and Mali), historically one of Western Africa’s greatest Gold Regions; meticulously complied from the best and most recent sources by Alexandre Meunier, the virtuoso ‘Cabinet Cartographer’ in the service of the French Ministère des Colonies. - This gargantuan 6-sheet work is the first complete, accurate and detailed map of the historical Bambouk region, an area framed by the Falémé and Bafing Rivers, tributaries of the Sénégal River. The area currently is currently the borderland between the modern nations of Sénégal and Mali, while the territory of Mauritania bounds the north, while Guinea borders the south. While today a somewhat sleepy area, Bambouk was for centuries of tremendous value as one of Western Africa’s premier gold regions. The map was compiled in 1909 by Alexandre Meunier, a master cartographer in the employ of the French Ministère des Colonies in Paris. Meunier lists the vast array of stellar sources he used to create this impressive work, executed to a very large scale of 1:200,000. In his "Notes on the Eragny Press," Pissarro wrote, "For lack of capital, I was not able to print the books I wanted to produce until the French began, at last, to take an interest in the revival of printing. Mr Roger Marx, who knew of my efforts, introduced me to Mr Rodrigues, the President of the Society of the 'Cent Bibliophiles' in Paris. The latter asked me to produce a book for them, giving me carte blanche with regard to text, illustrations, size, paper, etc. This gave me the opportunity I wanted and with a quiet mind as to cost, I set to work on the production of the 'Historie de Soliman' . . . by Gerard de Nerval. For this book we used gold leaf in the printing of the initial letters. This gave us much trouble and we had to invent a technique to overcome the great difficulty of preventing the gold leaf from sticking to the wet hand-made paper, and after many attempts we were successful." The result is an enormously charming volume, combining French elegance with English craftsmanship. Ray observes, "Pissarro's decorations for this extract from Nerval's 'Voyage en orient' achieve a selective richness. The book opens with a burst of color and gold leaf, there are monochrome woodcuts dotting the … [Click Below for Full Description]

De La Motte Fouqué, Friedrich; Rackham, Arthur (illustrator); Courtney, W.L. (translator)
William Heinemann, London, 1909. Signed limited first edition, number 425 of 1000 copies, of Arthur Rackham's illustrated version of this German tale, first published in 1811. Celebrated for his depictions of fairy creatures, Rackham is ideally suited for this tale of a water spirit seeking a soul: "below sparkle, stately and solemn, many noble ruins, washed by the loving waters which win from them delicate moss-flowers and entwining clusters of sea-grass. Those who dwell there are very fair." Rackham's wave designs, in particular, lend a Japanese woodblock-inspired Art Nouveau element to the work, as in the image of Undine sinking into the Danube. A near-fine example of the best of the Golden Age of Illustration. Quarto, measuring 11.5 x 9 inches: viii, 136. Original full vellum, front board lettered and decorated in gilt with vignette by Rackham, spine elaborately ornamented in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, stiff brown endpapers. Half-title, with limitation signed by Rackham on verso. Title page printed in green and black. Frontispiece and fourteen full-page color plates tipped onto heavy brown paper with printed tissue guards; black-and-white headpieces and tailpieces by Rackham throughout text. Lacking silk ties. Light bowing and soiling to boards, with a few faint abrasions, some toning to pages adjacent to brown paper leaves. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
