Dr. Hugo Grothe
Leipzig: Karl W. Hiersemann, 1909. Wilson p. 86; A. Ga … [Click Below for Full Description]

1909. "Military Demolitions" by Douglas MacArthur. Published by the Army Service Schools, Department of Engineering at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1909. First Edition. This is General MacArthur's first publication and is quite rare. 34 pages with three leaves of illustrations from drawings and thirteen leaves of photographic illustrations. Original blue paper wrappers. Then 1st Lieutenant Douglas MacArthur (who seems to appear in several photographs in this booklet) was a 29 year-old Army Engineer when this booklet was published. Name in blue pencil on front wrapper, a few blue pencil markings internally; very good. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur (26 January 1880 - 5 April 1964) was an American general and field marshal of the Philippine Army. He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines Campaign. Arthur MacArthur, Jr., and Douglas MacArthur were the first father and son to each be awarded the medal. He was one of only five men ever to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the U.S. Army, and the only man ever to become a field marshal in the Philippine Army. From 1908 to 1912 the young officer (promoted to captain in 1911) was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he again served with the 3d Battalion of Engineers, taught in the Army Service Schools, and published a manual entitled Military Demolitions. During this period he also instructed troops at the Mounted Service School at Fort Riley, Kansas … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition, first printing. Fine condition. Signed by author on tipped in half title. These 2 exceptional volumes are the first issue of the first edition of Shackleton's first hand account of one of the most celebrated Antarctic expedition. These volumes constitute one of the most important works in their area of expertise, with Shackleton's description of the "Nimrod" expedition of 1907-09 being one of the classic narratives of Polar exploration. There were three goals for this much-celebrated Antarctic expedition; First - to reach the Pole; Second - to plant a flag at the magnetic South pole; and third - to explore the Ross Barrier. These were ambitious goals and, although unable to achieve them all, the expedition was overall considered successful. The accounts of this exploration are fascinating and have contributed considerably to further expeditions and the knowledge we now have of the region. SHACKLETON, Ernest Henry
Heinemann. 1909 1st ed Heart of Antarctic Shackleton Nimrod Expedition Arctic Voyages An incredibly rare and valuable first edition printing of Ernest Shackleton’s account of the 1907 Antarctic Expedition. Also known as the Nimrod Expedition, this voyage, like many at the time, were focused on reaching the geographic South Pole, but with dangerous encounters, harsh weather, and deadly ice, many difficult circumstances slowed the journey. And while Shackleton and crew never made it to their goal destination, the expedition was not considered a failure. It included the first ascent of Mount Erebus and the discovery of the approximate location of the Magnetic South Pole. Shackleton published ‘Heart of the Antarctic’ shortly after his voyage ended – a large two volume account which features full and double-page engraved photographs of the ship, crew, and Antarctic landscapes. Paris: Hachette et Cie, 1909. First edition in French of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Limited to thirty numbered copies on Papier Imperial du Japon signed by Arthur Rackham, this being copy no. 19, of a total edition of 330. Quarto (11 1/2 x 9 inches; 292 x 228 mm). [6], 134 pp. Forty mounted color plates with captioned tissue guards, thirty drawings in black and white. Publisher's full vellum, gilt decorated. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Silk ties missing. Small rectangular bookplate on front fly-leaf. A fine copy. The black & white illustrations have far more definition here printed on 'Papier Imperial du Japon' than those in the English Limited Edition. "The most splendid illustrated work of the century, so far" (William de Morgan). "The illustrations for a Midsummer-Night's Dream... were much less controversial in theme than Alice, and their success was ungrudged... Rackham cast his spell over the play; his drawings superceded the work of all his predecessors from Gilbert to Abbey, and for fifty years have enriched the imagination; his conception of Puck and Bottom, Titiana and Oberon, Helena and Hermia, his gnarled trees and droves of fairies, have represented the visual reality of the Dream for thousands of readers. Here he excelled especially in landscape, and in reconciling dream and reality, giving himself to the luxury of rich detail with a r … [Click Below for Full Description]

NEW YORK: P. F. COLLIER & SON, 1909. CONSIDER FOR A MOMENT WHERE YOU CAN BUY A 1ST EDITION HARVARD CLASSICS & SHELF OF FICTION COLLECTION IN VERY FINE CONDITION?. THE COMPLETE HARVARD CLASSICS COLLECTION HARVARD CLASSICS COMPLETE IN 51 VOLUMES #26949 1909 / 1910 & SHELF OF FICTION COMPLETE IN 20 VOLUMES 1917 FIRST EDITION / FIRST PRINTING New York: P. F. Collier & Son VOLUMES MEASURE 7 7/8 inches TALL x 5 1/2 inches DEEP _______________ A note on most of my Harvard Classics listings : I focus on finding RARE sets and/or sets in uncommonly FINE / VERY FINE CONDITION. Where applicable, I try to match these sets with the 1917 SHELF OF FICTION. These sets are for the higher-end collector and belong in collections or libraries that hold volumes in similar condition. Prices accordingly set. THIS HARVARD CLASSICS SET IS IN VERY FINE CONDITION - which is remarkable for a set 110 years old (in fact, for actual antiquarian books condition is higher simply because finding books in FINE or above condition is uncommon. Even when there are condition issues that would drop the grading of more modern books, the same issues for an antiquarian book still maintains the higher grading). The bindings are supple. All boards & bindings are firm, attached, square and tight. Normally there will be shelf-wear on antique books, but there is barely any anywhere on all volumes in this set. Corners are typically bent; but you'll find very few here. In fact, nearly all volumes appear never to have been read. A fair number of the frontispiece pages show some foxing, but this is where it stops (see photos) … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ernest Shackleton
William Heinneman. Published by William Heinemann, London; 1909. quarto. First edition, first printing. Fine condition. Signed by author on tipped in half title. These 2 exceptional volumes are the first issue of the first edition of Shackleton s first hand account of one of the most celebrated Antarctic expedition. Bound in custom half calf gilt bindings, these volumes show very few signs of wear or ageing. The bindings are tight and in excellent condition, and apart from some minor toning and spotting to the original uncut pages, there is no damage or marks to speak of. The first volume is signed Yours truly E. H. Shackleton on tipped-in half title. These are an incredibly rare find, with only one or two signed copies currently available for sale, including this one. These volumes constitute one of the most important works in their area of expertise, with Shackleton s description of the Nimrod expedition of 1907-09 being one of the classic narratives of Polar exploration. These volumes are exceptional examples of these important works and would be the ultimate crowning jewel of any rare book collection focussing on expl … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROCKEFELLER, John D
New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Rear pastedown with old bookseller's ink-stamp, else contents clean. Minor staining to front cover, touch of fraying to the spine head. Very Good. Gilt-lettered and decorated blue cloth, illustrated with a frontispiece photograph. SIGNED by Rockefeller on the half-title page and dated 2 September 1913. A 5-3/4" x 3-1/2" photograph of Rockefeller playing golf with four other men is pasted to the page facing the page with the autograph. An ink caption in an unknown hand identifies the photo as having been taken at Forest Hill with the same date as Rockefeller's signature and names the golfers: Capt. Scofield, J.B. Roberts, (?) Scofield, Geo. Rudd, and J.D. Rockefeller. "Captain Scofield was a personal friend of John D. Rockefeller and one of the few men with whom the world's richest man played golf" (Cleveland. Vol. 1. Lewis Publishing Co., 1918, p. 216). Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil, was the wealthiest American ever. When he died, his fortune approximated 1/65th of the Gross National Product. In today's dollars, his personal fortune would be worth about $190 billion compared to that of, say, Bill Gates's $90 billion or so. At times his wealth actually exceeded the annual federal budget. Books signed by this great businessman are extremely scarce.

Du Bois, W. E. B., Ida Wells-Barnett, et. al.
Green cloth with gilt titles. Slight bowing on front corners. Some edge, corner and surface wear with what may be residue from call numbers on the spine. No other indicators of a library are present. The binding is secure with no tears or parting and the book is square. General light aging. G+ to VG-. This is a collection of essays that, for the most part, were speeches at the inaugural National Negro Conference in 1909. By the next year this Conference had become the NAACP. The National Negro Conference was arranged in 1909 by American socialist, William English Walling, and others after race riots in Springfield, Missouri. While whites predominated in this initial conference a number of important African-Americans participated, most notably W. E. B. Du Bois, Ida Wells-Barnett, Rev. J. Milton Waldron and Bishop Alexander Waters, all of whom gave speeches that are in this volume. Booker T Washington was invited but did not attend. Barnett's speech on lynching is particularly noteworthy. (Especially since the Conference has a whole failed to support anti-lynching legislation.) In 1910 the second of these conferences was held and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was officially founded with Walling as the first President. In fact most of those who gave speeches at the first Conference became officers in the NAACP. This is a scarce volume of special importance in the history of the fight for civil rights and equality for black citizens. WorldCat locates only 9 copies in libraries. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 229 pages

Publication of issues was contemplated on a quarterly basis. One of an unstated limitation. 9 x 6 inches. Lightest spruce blue wrappers, with substantial amounts of black-stamped lettering to the front and rear wrappers and, to the front wrapper, a sunburst design in golden yellow with a hand-held hammer and the motto "We Can" in a ribbon. The wrapper paper has faded evenly to a blue-beige. The wrappers are very clean. With 67 numbered pages, plus xv numbered pages of adverts in the rear. There are numerous B&W illustrations, including photo-plates, drawings and plans. A 1 inch tear to the rear wrapper has been expertly repaired; else no pre-existing faults.
