Churchill, Winston Spencer
London, Hodder & Stoughton, 1909. One volume in 8vo; pp. XXIII, (1), 414; original publisher’s red cloth, minor bumping to extremities, spine very slightly sunned, gilt lettering to spine and front cover, mild foxing to endpapers, bottom edge untrimmed, inside clean and crisp, a very good copy. First edition. “The addresses in this volume deal with nearly all the great political topics of the last four years – with Free Trade, Colonial Preferences, the South African settlement, the latest and probably the final charter of trade unionism, the Miners’ Bill, the measures for establishing Trade Boards and Labour Exchanges, the scheme of compulsory and voluntary assurance, and the Budget. His wife, Dorothy Stanley, finished the book from his journals and notebooks, and some personal letters he sent to her. "I should like to write out a rough draft, as it were, of my life. The polishing could take care of itself, or you could do it, when the time comes. Were I suddenly to be called away, how little, after all, the world would know of me!...But, granted that I know little of my real self, still, I am the best evidence for myself." - from a letter to his wife.

Dr. Hugo Grothe
[Click Below for Full Description]

GIORDANO, Umberto 1867-1948
1 page of a bifolium (ca. 136 x 179 mm). Dated Milano, January 26, 1909. In black ink. Three measures from Scene V of the Second Episode of Giordano's opera Marcella. Notated in treble clef on one hand-drawn staff. In 4/4 time. With text "Vedi anch'io l'amor conosco" underlaid. Minor browning, heavier to blank final page; creased at folds, with three short tears, and remnants of adhesive, not affecting quotation. Marcella, first performed at the Teatro Lirico in Milan on November 9, 1907 to a libretto by L. Stecchetti, H. Cain, and J. Adenis, is "a story of love and renunciation across the class barrier... Giordano handled the late Romantic, emotionally vehement idiom of the giovane scuola with ease and fluency, being particularly skilful in weaving into his scores elements of local and historical colour... His stage sense is always sure, and his vocal writing unfailingly effective." Julien Budden in Grove Music Online.

CHURCHILL, Winston
Hodder & Stoughton, 1909. First edition, cloth bound issue. Earliest state of the text, with one appendix and an index. 8vo. Original maroon cloth titled in gilt to spine and upper cover. A very good copy indeed with a bump to the upper corner and a little wear to the spine ends, but a generally bright clean copy. Armourial bookplate to front pastedown, page edges browned as usual. A small marginal chip to the final leaf of the index, but otherwise crisp and clean. Housed in custom made cloth box, an excellent copy of a noted rarity. One of the rarest of all Churchill's works, the cloth bound issue is likely to have been issued in only 100 copies. "The publisher records show that 100 sets of sheets were bound on 20 December 1909, four days after the payment to Churchill of a royalty of £100 on account and two weeks before the publication of the paper wrappers issue. It is, as least, very clear that only a few such copies were offered for sale and that they are extremely scarce." - Cohen A collection of speeches delivered in Lancashire in December 1909 in the run up to the 1910 general election.
